Just a heads-up here to a forthcoming book: "The Journey of Luke Skywalker: An Analysis of Modern Myth and Symbol" by Steven Galipeau. It essentially is a Jungian psychoanalysis of the four SW films. Here’s the description from the publisher (Open Court Publishing Company): “In The Journay of Luke Skywalker, Steven Galipeau explains the symbolism and meaning within George Lucas’s popular modern fairytale. Using Jung’s approach to dreams and myths, he reveals such themes as the battle between light femininity and dark masculinity, the conflict between nature and technology, and the development of the individual. He then shows the reader why the characters and the concepts resonate so deeply with us.”

A large portion of the text is a blow-by-blow description of the plot and each scene including lots of dialogue, which the author then interprets. I don’t buy all of it, but portions of his analysis make sense. He takes the little bits of humor and wisecracks a bit too seriously for my taste, but he’s the doctor. The author is the executive director of the Coldwater Counseling Center in Studio City, CA. The book will be released in April and will cost $19.95 in paperback.

I have a problem with someone taking four films of a six film saga and analyzing it in such a way. Themes and metaphors are still incomplete and thus any analysis is going to be flawed because of that.

If he wanted to stick to just the OT, then I'd have less of a problem with it. Once TPM is included in the analysis, however, I then see the analysis as flawed because it's based on an incomplete story with incomplete metaphors and incomplete themes.

Doc:
The TPM analysis is tiny. Kinda just an add-on at the end. Like the rest of us, even this doctor wasn't even sure of what to make of it.
