anybody know who it was that Vader got the idea for his armour/helmet? Was it Exar Kun?

I don't think Exar Kun wore anything similar to that. If you look at Vader's helmet, it was somewhat or a cross between the helmets the ground Imperials wore at Endor, and the breathing masks the Tie-Fighter pilots wore at Yavin.

I imagine that it was chosen more for functionality over aesthetics. But there's a good chance that it was based off of the aforementioned armour. It has a look similar to that of the generic Imperial armor.

I don't know where Vader got it, but I know Lucas and his posse got the idea from samauri armor

Actually, Vader did supposedly base his suit on the black armor worn by Exar Kun (I'm talking in terms of Star Wars chronology here...). If you look at pictures from the comics, Kun's armor and Vader's look pretty similar. As for the origin of the Vader mask, that's a good question... not sure about that one...

I dont think he was inspired by anyone. I dont really think of it as armour, more of a like support system. I would think it was what could be got at the time to keep him alive and stop bis falling off.
Still, wait to Ep3 and we'll get an answer.
