View Full Version : Foreshadowing in The Last Command?

I was looking at old SW comics & saw this image. I remembered at the time wondering who the girl was--cause it isn't Leia. I didn't know if it was just a picture left on Coruscant that coincidentally was in Leia's nursery or if it was a painting of someone important--that maybe Leia had put there. I remember thinking that it must be important somehow--otherwise, why put all the detail into the illustration? Looking at the picture now, it's obviously Amidala. So my question is (maybe for those who have read the book) does Leia KNOW who that girl is? Did she have it painted on purpose & placed in her home since it's her mother? Or are we the reader supposed to know the importance, and also know that the main characters don't?

This comic came out *before* Ep1. So apparently, there was some foreshadowing of Portman's role. Does this mean we'll see her on Coruscant (cause in the DH comic The Last Command, this picture is hanging in the palace on Coruscant where Leia lives)?

Y'know, I was THIS close to giving the standard "that would be cool but I seriously doubt it" reply. However, that picture does bear a striking resemblance to Amidala, and I'm open to the possibility of foreshadowing being done in the EU. On the other hand, Natalie Portman wasn't even cast as Amidala yet, so unless GL knew way back then exactly what he wanted Amidala to look like, I doubt it's supposed to be her. Still, that's rather spooky.:)

I have this comic too. I was under the impression that it was illustrated, obviously before Ep I came out, but after we all knew Portman had been cast as Queen. I thought it was just a neat thing the artist decided to put in there to depict those 3 generations together. Nothing like that is in the novel. Leia does know what her mother looked like, she has memories of her, she must've had pictures of her that got lost on Alderaan. I suppose she theoretically could've purposefully aquired that mural to put up in her residence. It could originate from Naboo OR Coruscant considering she was a political figure.

This is my first EU post. Woo hoo!:)

It is a very good point that the comics were drawn way after the books were written.

The first printing of my Dark Force Rising Comic is 1998. It is a very real possibility that Portman had already been caste, but a very fact that production had already started on Ep 1. So, this could have been done by the artist on purpose.

I don't believe that the picture was made in any collaboration with EPI. If it had been a picture of Nat/Amidala, it would've undoubtedly had differnt royal attire. As for it looking like her, it looks more like Leia, whom Nat Portman is supposed to look related to.

I don't know that is a striking resemblance all things considered. I mean first off who is that picture supposed to be? Is it just some nondescript female royalty? And the attire... maybe in the future movies we'll see some change in royal attire. I just think that's too much of a coincidence

I remember reading some where that the authors did it on purpose....Filming had already begun on TPM when the comic was done. This topic is discussed like once every 2 months at the forums at theforce.net. :)
