J.K. Rowling really shot up didn't she?

They didn't do the list very well, because in some places more than 1 celebrity got in on the same rank yet instead of taking it into account they just proceed with all the other ranks as normal. So the 'Top 101' list ends up with over 150 names in it. :)

No way is JK Rowling or Dr Dre/Eminim more powerful than Lucas

That list is rubbish. The guy who gave Britney her breasts is far more powerful.

Ten years from now 1/3 of the people on that list won't even be able to get their phone calls returned in Hollywood. But people like Spielburg and Cruise will probably still be on the list. But I don't think you'll see GL on that list 10 years from now. He'll be sitting fat and happy and making whatever kind of film he wants, but once SW is over he'll slide back towards the second half of the top 100 the way he did during the late 80s and early 90s. Who wants to be on that list year after year anyway?

How exactly are they defining "most powerful", anyway? Obviouasly it's not the richest. Do they mean the most popular? Or did they just arbitrarily think of a bunch of names?

How'd Napster get so high on the list, anyway? All they do is run a file-swapping service. Why are they "powerful"?

Maybe it's derived from the amount of negative or controversial press they generate?

Those lists are sometimes the equivalent of the "Who's Hot, Who's Not" lists you'll see in ET or US magazine. Some staff member who has nothing better to do that month get's stuck with putting the list together and he uses some convuluted rating system to rank movers and shakers in Hollywood. People like GL could care less, but I bet some people in Hollywood live and die by those lists.
Hollywood Star with Over-Inflated-Out-Of-Control-Ego calls his agent and says;
"Did you see my ranking?! I fell 5 spots! You're fired!"

But where's N'sync and the Backstreet Boys?

;)
-----------------

Napster is changing music distribution, and sowing the seeds for the destruction of the large record companies. :^D Even if it gets closed down it's accelerated the process that the internet and the mp3 format started.

I think with ILM and Skywalker Sound, GL will be pretty influential for some time.

The thing I like about that list is that there are so many individual artists, directors and actors mixed in with the Entertainment Moguls.

Yeah, like Tom Hanks and Bruce Willis. I understand that they can pick and choose scripts and influence which movies are made, but are they really more powerful than the studio that actually makes the movies?
And further about Napster: While they did shake things up/accelerate the way music is distributed, I wouldn't say they're powerful. What can they do now that would affect anyone? Actually, they have very little power.

It's not so much Napster the company as napster the phenomenon.

The funny thing is, every time they're back in the news, the online Napster population spikes up.

Mp3.com could have been more influential. Their Alanis Morrisette/Tori Amos mp3.com tour was brilliant. Then they stupidly got involved it trying to promote established artists, and even files a court brief on the on the record Company side of things in the Napster case.

if Napster were to win in court (as unlikely as that is) there would be MAJOR changes in the Music Business.

And does anyone else think calling Britney Spears a "musician" is pushing the definition of the word a little?

ReaperFett

Id call her more 'Ugly slapper', but that is me

And Oprah isn't a "talk show host / publisher"...try "self-proclaimed deity";)

Just looking at that list...MAN, it's messed up! There's no way Julia Roberts is second most powerful! And how come the president of CBS is #1 but the other network presidents didn't even make the list? Stupid magazine writers...:)
I'm still not getting this magazine's definition of "Powerful".

Britney Spears???? BAH!

Jedi Master Kyle
Oct 23rd, 2000, 10:31:50 PM
Yes, calling Britney Spears a musician is definetly pushing it. She's doesn't write her songs, she can sing them with SOME skill, and she can dance. Oh, can she dance! ;) But it does NOT make her a musician, she's an entertainer. Plain and simple.

And the only reason why Les Moonves is so powerful these days, is because of Survivor, and the hype of the upcoming Survivor.

She also has an incredibly good grasp of wearing a dress. :)

If it was a list of who I would like to have dinner with, she would definitely be WAY higher than Lucas. ;)

But its not, and I'm not quite getting this magazines definition of 'powerful' either.

Yeah, what is the definition of powerful for this writer?

At first, I was thinking the writer might think powerful is someone most likely to show up on Joan Rivers' fashion review of the Academy Awards. But then I couldn't make that fit with CBS president, Napster people...

Then I thought: who Susan Surandan is most likely to criticise while at the Academy Awards, but then noticed that a few Republican Big-Wigs aren't on the list.

I kind of figure it is a list of "what and who we can most exploit to make a lot of money" list. So the only reason GL is on the list is because he is going through a Hollywood distribution company. Otherwise, he wouldn't be on the list, because no money would be filtered through Hollywood if he could distribute it on his own! :)

And how come the president of CBS is #1 but the other network presidents didn't even make the list?
One word: Survivor.

ReaperFett
Oct 24th, 2000, 07:08:27 PM
I would have thought Tarantino would have made it

And where were Buscemi, Dougray Scott, Guy Ritchie, Robbie Rodriguez or Rob Schneider? Tsk, the world has no true reasoning... :)

Bromine

I can see why CBS would be high on the list due to Survivor, but the other networks should have at least made the list...

Perhaps a better title would have been "Who's hot"?

The Human Torch :)
