I chose WW, why? I couldn't believe it..but Braveheart produced the biggest emotional impact on me...the second movies doesnt come close..I got the dvd when the copies were being put on the shelves...I enjoyed seeing it beat T2...I loved this movie so much it became my all-time favorite...the hell with SW...after about a few weeks, braveheart is still up there as the best movie ever made..of course that opinion is shared, but I am ready for your bashing...

I said Riggs
Braveheart was good, but a bit of a one sided view of what happened

I never saw any "BAsed on a true story" advertisements...so that point is not valid...if you listen to Gibson's commentary on the dvd, mentions a lot how he made up stuff for cinematogaphy's sake...

Riggs has my vote. I'd go with Mad Max in second place. And knowing all the liberties that were taken with Wallace's character affects me as well. Sorry Itala but it does, and if it affects someone's interpretation of a character then it's valid. At least it did me.

itala - if the movie is based on a true story and a real character shouldnt the story be historically accurate??
i think so or why use the real person, its easy to just make up a new name for a character,

Personally, the historical liberties Gibson took with Wallace didn't bother me that much. But if it had been a period of history that I had been more familiar with then it probably would have been a major distraction for me. It goes back to personal taste. I'm sure there are some European History majors who loved Braveheart and couldn't care less about the inaccuracies. But I'd bet some were really put off by the embellishments that Gibson made.
Amadeus was a film with a similar dilemma. Great performances by Hulce and Abraham, but very inaccurate. I liked it, but I've heard my share of music majors and Mozart fans slam the film for being so "creative" with its plot. All I'm saying is that if you find fault with a period piece for being historically inaccurate you have a legitimate reason for not liking it. And if you end up slamming a movie I like then that's just something you and I will agree to disagree on. But I'd never fault your logic for not liking the movie.

I thourougly enjoyed Braveheart, definetly one of my favorite movies. As for the historical problems I don't mind those as much, I know the jist of what really happened so I just watch the movie and enjoy.
The director even had quite a number of Wallace's relatives in the movie as extra's.

I don't think it has to be, unless you're making a documentary, or you're claiming that your fictional pice is historically accurate.
Whenever I hear the words 'based on a true story' I usually assume that stuff has been changed for dramatic purposes.

ill say it again then :p
if your not going to stay true to history then why use historical characters???
sorry but american writers are constantly changing history to make bigger bucks,
now you may not care but i think its tragic that these figures in history are being used just to make a bigger buck,
the patriot, braveheart, U571, the list goes on of history being changed, mostly now to make it a more pro-american angle,(obviously not for braveheart though :P)
but thats just my opinion
and i did see based on a true story for all those films itala for all those films so does that make the point valid now

I think it depends on how far they put it.
Braveheart is OK. It doesnt lie as such, just ignores a small point about the Scots(ie they werent all happy and nice)
Saving private Ryan was OK too, although they could have had ONE MAN with and English accent, and cut out the derogrity comment about English
U-571 will be forgiven in the end, as it did sort of happen, although they turned it into a load of rubbish
The Patriot and Colditz(soon) will never be forgiven though. They just insult the people involved

Here's a common phrase i always hear...
It's just a movie.
Big deal, Randall Wallace wrote an amazing story, and they never shiow you all Scots are nice and happy..just look at the portrayal of the nobles...
I was looking at a Wallace website and saw its guestbook, many English people bragged about how they still kept Scotland and how they would never sustain by themselves..hmm..where ya get your billion pounds of oil a year eh?

but these are movies that people are being told is a true story, and kids are growing up thinking that this is really what happened, (hell even some adults too)
you know how many people i know who thought U571 is exactly what happened,
so have people change history, defileing peoples history and good names and ancestors in the name of the bigger buck
since its "just a movie" i guess its ok

Yah, that line of believing right away separates the ignorant from the intelligent, I started doing research on Wallace right away and found the actualy "written" facts, those can still be not 100% accurate.
Anyway, Gibson mentions ALL of the written facts on his dvd commentary, so don't blame him..he never, EVER said "this is all true, believe it!"
Oh, I never knew he's actualy from NY, he just grew in Australia...
