....THE PHANTOM!

Variety recently reported on the huge spending by consumers in the home video department.

The following lines from the article grabbed my attention, because to my knowledge, no final VHS sales figures for the PHANTOM MENACE have been released yet.

STAR WARS:EPISODE 1-THE PHANTOM MENACE, the 3rd biggest money-maker of all time, amassed a whopping $176 million in consumer rentals and sales on VHS.

Fox's the X-MEN also made a great amount totaling some $137 million.

But Disney's TARZAN put a serious stomping on them both! It racked up an amazing $268 million in video rental and sales! The TARZAN video generated 56% more revenue than what the film made theatrically!

Until we hear differently, George's video PHANTOM got his head handed to him from a pumped up, steroid popping cartoon named TARZAN.

Ah, somewhere I can hear Chewie sadly lamenting, "You shoulda put me in your damn movie George, I would've given it some heart and soul. And we might have broken all the records together."

I can almost hear Jedi3167 rising from whatever hole he's crawled into... Yoda have mercy on our souls.

That's pretty impressive for Tarzan. I can tell you from experiance that it's not difficult for children's videos to outsell films. My video collection is now almost evenly made up of children's videos and movies my wife and I have purchased. We didn't even buy most of the kid videos that we have, most of them are gifts from grandparents. I can easily see our video collection being 3/4 kid fare in a couple of years. As a rule my wife and I never purchased many videos, but I think you'll find this is a popular trend in many households with children. There are tons of reasons;

*Some parents like the idea of knowing EXACTLY what their kids are watching. One way to keep your kids away from Rikki Lake is to pop in the Tarzan video.

*When your hyperactive toddler is running unchecked through the house, a video can give you just enough time to get some laundry done and start dinner.

*Some parents are LAZY!

That's right, some parents are just damn lazy and think their TV is a baby sitter. I've never onced popped in a video to keep my son busy. I'll wear him out the old fashioned way; wrestling! I'll pin and pummel that 2 year old punk until we're BOTH exhausted. But there are times when the boy wants to see Elmo so my wife will pop in Elmo in Grouchland as a treat. Usually my son will watch Elmo's blanket quest for 10 minutes and then move on to something more active. But those 10 minutes can be life savers sometimes. Bottom line, kids videos sell.
