I think it'll defifinitely be nominated for Best picture. In that respect it's a shoe-in...but I don't think it will win. Not at this time anyways...that can change in a few weeks. Oscar buzz is stongly behind TRAFFIC right now though(a film that I'm dying to see). We will see....

I love gladiator. I got the DVD for Chrismas. It would be nice if it won, but as usual all the awards will goto small, boring films that very few people have actually seen.

If I would call Titanic a small movie, boring yes :)

Gladiator certainly deserves nominations, it would be nice to see a decent moive get the gongs for a change instead of the usual dribble

If Way of the Gun gets no nomination for its score, or SNatch gets no nommos, I am never going to accept the Oscars as anything more than a joke award ceromony

Though I may not agree with every Best Picture(or all the other awards they give) I usually think the Academy makes pretty good choices. The Best Pic's they give are almost always in my 10 Best List for example. I never call them 'dribble'(other than ENGLISH PATIENT).

I don't think the oscars are always about the best wins, its usually a lot more political than that. One good example was the best supporting actor last year, Haley Joel Osmet and Michael Clark Duncan getting beaten out by Michael Caine. Caine himself even admitted when he got the award that he didn't deserve it. All 3 roles were good but Caine's was rather typical of himself, it wasn't anything special, whereas I thought the other two pulled of incredible jobs in their movies.

Then theres the whole FX thing with TPM getting snubbed..grr

Anyways, Gladiator was great and I hope it gets some nominations and a few wins.

Well JJ it's all up to everyone's perspective. Caine's speech was classy no doubt...and he did dsay he didn't deserve it, but I disagree. Last years crop of Supporting Actor ALL did great jobs. I was torn on who to root for, but I was definitely not saddened when Caine won.

I think last year was a good example of what happens when 2 favorties split a vote and a third candidate sneaks on in. I remember the year Lionel Rithcie won a Grammy for best album. Do you know what 2 albums he beat out? Purple Rain (Prince) and Born In The USA (Springsteen). Either one of these two movies would have easily beaten Ritchie's album, but they cancelled each other out and Ritchie got the conservative member vote and he pulled it out. Same thing with Caine, many older and traditional academy members went witht the established Caine. Nevertheless, the guy gave a classy speech.

Yes, it is a good film, acting-wise (I'm an actress),
and film-wise. And hopefully as one friend sent me in an email bring back the costume dramas. I got my husband to finally see it when I bought the dvd and he said that it was worth seeing.
Another film I heard worth seeing and hubby and I pklan to see next weekend is Crounching Tiger, Hidden Dragon.

The Oscars are a joke award ceremony! :)

I am very anti-Oscar, and have been for a very long time. Just a bunch of self-absorbed Hollyweirds gathering together to give themselves a big pat on the back, IMHO.

I seem to remember someone calling the oscars a mutual masturbation fest for hollywoods elite. I can see his point of view...

This year as been particularly annoying - to me. At least last year American Beauty and several other films played widely before the end of the year. This time it seems like they opened liek 5 or 6 movies in NY and LA only just before the end of the year. 'Experts' on tv and the net were busy buzzing aboot films that were sure fire Oscar Contenders, whilre the vast majprity of the country had absolutely no chance to see them.

Plus there's always a movie or two that comes out early in the year, gets some Oscar buzz, then is totally forgotten at nomination time.

I've seen alot of them. So I have fairly knowledgeable opinions, but I do see your point Darth23. Of copurse there are always the limited release oscar movies that open wide later. It's hardly a new phenomenon, they've been doing that for years. I think we'll have a better idea who the front runners are(in most of the major categories)after the Golden Globes are announced Sunday.

I can see your not liking TPM, but not liking Gladiator also?

Personally, I can't believe such an overrated Award recognized such an outstanding movie.

To see this win Best Picture from the Globes. I definitely think TRAFFIC was a fine film and wouldn't have been devastated if it had won, but I was pulling for GLADIATOR. I think the Oscar race is wide open....4 films recieved two awards each. GLADIATOR got Best Picture-Drama and Best Score. CTHD got Best foreign film and Best Director. ALMOST FAMOUS recieved Best Picture - Comedy/Musical and Best Supporting Actress. TRAFFIC got Best screenplay and Best Supporting Actor. Damn....it's WIDE OPEN. I'd say I think CROUCHING TIGER, HIDDEN DRAGON is the front runner though(I still need to see this, I haven't heard anything bad about it yet).

I will be surprised if Crouching Tiger won the oscar, it is a foriegn film and the Oscars are supposed to be for American Movies. The Oscars have a category for it Best Foriegn Film which it should win but Best Picture should go to another film. I see it as a three film race between Gladiator, Almost Famous and Traffic. I would give a very slight edge to Gladiator for the moment just because it won best Drama last night.

I seriously can't believe it. What else was there to Gladiator than its visuals? It lacked any emotion. I never read about people who pondered for weeks about Gladiator or that it changed their life or whatever. Visually it was great, but as for screenplay, acting, so the elements what a drama is all about, it was average at best.

Dutchy, I personally found the acting excellent. Crowe gave a terrific performance, as did Oliver Reed and Phoenix. The script was peppered with great lines(but like anyone who has actually WRITTEN a screenplay the dialogue isn't the most important part) but it flawlessly moved the drama along, creating obstacles for our hero to overcome. I can think of half a dozen GREAT scenes and not a single bad one. Many times Dutchy, you and I have agreed(in fact I have tremendous respect for you)...but this time I can assure you we do not.

I dont know Dutchy , I really thought it was a well made movie ,good story and acting.
The very first time I watched it I thought it sucked ( but I really didnt watch it.The 2nd time I didnt take my eyes off the TV screen for a sec. And as for emotions I cried at the end, I was moved.Im a manly man.for a movie to make me cry AND admit it , must be something.Of course that is my opinion.=)

I completely disagree. The part of this movie that won me over was the understated sadness of the whole thing - keyed by Crowe's performance. With all the visual glitz, and bombast, the core of the movie was the tragedy of this man who lost his wife and son, and his reason to live. When his friend showed up in Rome and gave him the figurines of his family, that was one of the most touching things I've ever seen on film.

I think the way Maximus lived and died in the film was one fo the things that kept peopel coming back to the movie over and over again.

Gladiator has got a few things in it that that POS Titanic never did

1) A plot
2) NO LEO
3) No pointless sex scences
4) As D23 points out, EMOTION.
5) Frankly, if Maximus was chasing me, I'ld be @#%$ scared. Zane is a pretty boy.
6) No Celine Dion.
7) I truly wanted to hate Commodus. What a immoral barstard.

Gladiator did have that freaky brother-sister thing going on.....

that was pretty gross.
