CMJ
Jul 12th, 2000, 12:53:11 PM
Last year Darth23 had a thread where he kept count of all of the 100M movies. Last year 21 movies hit that mark. So far this year we have 6. These were as of Sunday.

1. Mission Impossible II - 204.0 M
2. Gladiator - 174 M
3. Dinosaur - 131.9 M
4. Erin Brokovich - 124.9 M
5. Big Momma's House - 103.6 M
6. The Perfect Storm - 100.2 M

These numbers will be updated weekely...biweekly or whenever I feel up to it...:)

i think we'll be able to add x-men to that list right quick!

Highlander: Endgame will be up there too, even if I have to rob $100million to get it there!

CMJ: Or whenever there's a new 100 million dollar flim. (some of those 90-somethings in the dollar theaters take a LONG time). :)

Cool list, btw, thanx.

this from TF.N:

The predictability and lack of impulse ticket-buying has created a ""glass ceiling at $25 million on opening weekends,'' said Jack Foley, distribution chief at USA Films. ""That's a high number, no doubt about it. But the lack of excitement also means no durability for these pictures.''

nice to see distribution films has employed the thief from Out of Sight.. :)

What does everyone think about The Legend of Bagger Vance? Will that have enough steam to reach $100M? It's a Will Smith-Matt Damon movie, but it's being released in October so obviously it's a more "serious" film that the studio wants to win Oscars with. This is a tough call. The trailer makes it look almost like a chick flick/human interest story. Basically Will Smith plays a black golf caddie in the South in the 1930's. He knows a lot about the game of golf, and helps Matt Damon, a budding ameteur golfer, become a champion. (or something like that) I probably won't be seeing it, but I'm sure lots of women will like this one. Pics like this open moderately and decline slowly. I'd expect an opening similar to Three Kings last year...around $16M. If it's good, a $100M+ finish could be in store. If it's bad, $60M tops.

No offense guys, but Highlander Endgame probably won't make it. Remember Universal Soldier: The Return, starring Jean Claude Van Damme? $4.7M open August 13th (I think), $10M finish. Pathetic. Endgame will do better than that, but still, probably not $100M+.

ReaperFett
Jul 12th, 2000, 09:37:26 PM
how much did Three Kings make total?

Oh yeah, The Klumps and Little Nicky will make $100million

Great Thread!!!!

jjwr
Jul 13th, 2000, 07:55:57 AM
I don't think Endgame will make 100 Million, Highlander movies usually do much better in rental.

Klumps I'm not sure about, will have to see how it goes. I think Little Nicky is a lock for $100 Million

Jedi Master Kyle
Jul 13th, 2000, 01:48:05 PM
I'll say the Klumps come close to 100 million. if they pass it, it won't be by all that much. obviously it depends on how fresh and funny it is....

Darth23
Jul 13th, 2000, 11:22:55 PM
Three Kings did not make it into the 100 million dollar club. I think it was in the 70-80 something range. The next pokemon comercia- movie should be interesting. The First made 10 million a day for 5 days, then PLUMMETED and only made 81 million (or so) total.

Does anyone think there will be more 100 million dollar films this year than last? I don't really think so, but who knows?

CMJ
Jul 14th, 2000, 10:35:05 PM
Probably not Darth23...but their are some heavyweights left in the later part of the year. We'll see.

BristerM
Jul 14th, 2000, 10:46:51 PM
I would have said $80M for PK2000 total, but there are two things to take into consideration.

1. The Pokemon craze is beginning to die out a bit. Fads never last long, do they?

2. It's summertime, and the kids are out of school. They'll be begging their parents to take them a second and third time.

Based on this, I'd say PK2000 does $105M easy. No more, no less.

CMJ
Jul 17th, 2000, 08:02:19 PM
No new movies on the list...though we should add 2 next week. TPS moved up a couple of spots though.

1. MI:2 - 207.6M
2. GLADIATOR - 176.6M
3. DINOSAUR - 132.8M
4. THE PERFECT STORM - 128.5M
5. ERIN BROKOVICH - 125.1M
6. BIG MOMMA'S HOUSE - 108.3M

BristerM
Jul 17th, 2000, 08:25:36 PM
X-Men and The Patriot, I'm guessing? X-Men is pretty much a lock for $100M next week, but The Patriot may have to wait another week.

jjwr
Jul 21st, 2000, 10:21:55 PM
Well Scary Movie broke the 100M barrier. X-Men is likely to follow this weekend and possibly the Patriot will cross the border this weekend or early next week.

CMJ
Jul 21st, 2000, 10:28:55 PM
I'll update it on Monday when the final weekend numbers are released.

BristerM
Jul 22nd, 2000, 03:07:59 PM
X-Men won't make it this weekend, Scary Movie definitely will though (it already has).

I'm still surprised that X-Men fell so much. At this rate it won't make it to $200M.

Darth23
Jul 22nd, 2000, 03:16:39 PM
X-men could make it. If made 7.5 million on Friday - it needs to make 8.35 million on Saturday and Sunday to hot the mark. Definitely possible.

Darth23
Jul 23rd, 2000, 07:40:58 PM
According to the Estimates, X-men will finish the weekend 500k away from 100 million. What are the chances that the final numbers push it over the top?

CMJ
Jul 24th, 2000, 08:46:41 PM
1. MI:2 - 209.9M
2. GLADIATOR - 178.5M
3. THE PERFECT STORM - 145.4M
4. DINOSAUR - 132.2M
5. ERIN BROKOVICH - 125.3M
6. SCARY MOVIE - 116.4M
7. BIG MOMMA'S HOUSE - 111.3M

These are as of Sunday. Several filoms have a good shot of making this list in the next couple of weeks.

Jedi Master Kyle
Jul 24th, 2000, 10:56:56 PM
is almost certainly there by now...

BristerM
Jul 28th, 2000, 08:04:43 AM
X-Men, The Patriot, and What Lies Beneath all have a good shot at making $100M by the end of the summer. Hollow Man looks like a probable addition too, but I think that'll be all the $100M movies this summer. We really didn't have too many blockbusters this year. Only 10, maybe 11, by the end of the summer. The holiday movie season better be pretty strong or else we're going to have less $100M grossers than last year.

CMJ
Jul 31st, 2000, 07:37:41 PM
Okay here's the new Breakdown....

1. MI:2 - 211.3M
2. GLADIATOR - 180.0M
3. THE PERFECT STORM - 158.1M
4. DINOSAUR - 133.5M
5. SCARY MOVIE - 132.1M
6. ERIN BROKOVICH - 125.4M
7. X-MEN - 122.9M
8. BIG MOMMA'S HOUSE - 113.0M
9. THE PATRIOT - 101.2M

And they say the B.O is doing well? I thought this time last year, there were more movies that had done better.

Darth23
Aug 1st, 2000, 12:40:59 AM
BO Guru predicts that Me Myself and Irene won't make it.

Ouch.

Chicken Run probably has a good shot. While You were Sleeping should be there in a couple of weeks. Nutty Prof 2 OUGHT to make it - given it's opening. Gone on 60 seconds has only 5 million to go, but it's struggling.

CMJ

I'm assuming you mean WHAT LIES BENEATH....:) The other flick came out like 5 years ago(or more).

Gone in Sixty Seconds MIGHT make it, MAYBE. MM&I definitely won't, Chicken Run will, What Lies Beneath and the Klumps obviously will...any others? The Replacements starring Keanu Reeves opening August 11th? Highly unlikely but MAYBE...

Jedi Master Kyle

Tuesday Aug 8:

What Lies Beneath should be there after today, and Chicken Run might make it this weekend. :)

Jedi Master Kyle

What Lies Beneath has made it. The Klumps should make it next week.

Any others?

It's too early to tell, but if Space Cowboys holds up well it could make it by mid-September.

Hell, who knows? Maybe Godzilla 2000 will be the 12th $100M blockbuster of the year! j/k

Darth23
Aug 22nd, 2000, 04:43:50 PM
Yeah but the 100 million dollar club is for movies that make 100 million domestically.

The worldwide 100 mil list would be MUCH bigger.

BristerM
Aug 26th, 2000, 09:04:52 AM
I'll list some major movies coming out soon and say whether I think they have potential to break $100M.

SPACE COWBOYS---------------------------(undecided)
HIGHLANDER ENDGAME----------------------NO
THE ART OF WAR--------------------------NO
BAIT------------------------------------NO
REMEMBER THE TITANS---------------------(undecided)
ALONG CAME A SPIDER---------------------NO
PAY IT FORWARD--------------------------(undecided)
LITTLE NICKY----------------------------YES
THE LEGEND OF BAGGER VANCE--------------YES

It doesn't look good, folks. I don't think we'll get 20+ $100M blockbusters this year like we did in 1999. 17 looks like a reasonable estimate.

CMJ, watch SPACE COWBOYS very carefully over the next few weeks. It's going to be a close one, there's a 60% chance it will make it.

If they can both keep going with these 5-8 Million weekends I think CTHD and Traffic may both cross the 100 Mark.

JonathanLB
Apr 9th, 2001, 11:01:12 PM
I saw 19 of the top 22 movies last year at the box office, hehe, sweet!

I was going to see Miss Congeniality, but missed it, and it barely crept in there. Then my sister saw Big Momma's House, but I still didn't (I want to). Then there's Julia Roberts' movie, and I don't watch her trash, so that automaticaly eliminated that one.

CMJ

...but then again I saw lots of smaller films that alot of ppl didn't see. My film tastes are pretty varied and eclectic.

JonathanLB

I mainly stick to what is doing well, because if a film is making lots of money, there usually is a reason for it...

Plus, more people talk about those films, so it makes it seem like I've seen everything when I see every film that makes $100 million, hehe.

Nah, I see plenty of movies that don't make too much money either, but I see whatever looks good to me...

CTHD FINALLY left all theatres. No other film from '00 that is still in release(and there are actually still a few left) has a shot at 100M...so the last update I had was the final list of 100M grossers in order. Whew! Now I guess I'll just concentrate on this years list.
