View Full Version : Box Office Contest - August 17

...not with a bang, but with a wimper.

The summer box office season is winding up, and we could have our first repeat Number 1 since week two of Pearl Harbor, when it barely edged out Shrek for the top spot.

Three new movies open this week, none of them seem to be major events. The World War 2 romantic drama, Captain Corelli's Mandolin, starring Nicolas Cage and that home-wrecker Penelope Cruz sweeps into theaters Friday. Rat Race, the it's a Mad Mad Mad Mad World clone also opens along with the lastest American Western action blockbuster American Outlaws.

With a few weeks to go the contest is still wide open. Two players are tied for the lead (me and sirdizzy), and Mu just to the lead for the Number One movie pick. Almost everyone has won that part of the contest once, so it's still an open race. It could come down to the very last week.

Lee's Theater ESTIMATES:
Rat Race 2500+
American Outlaws 2200+
Captain Corelli's M. 1500+

The 'Expert' predictions:

Box Office Guru:
American Pie 2 - 22
Rush Hour 2 - 18
Captain Corelli's Mandolin - 11
The Princess Diaries - 9
The Others - 9
Rat Race - 9
Planet of the Apes - 7
American Outlaws - 6
Jurassic Park III - 5

Lee's Movie Info: (Early Predictions)
American Pie 2 - 20.3
Rush Hour 2 - 17.2
Rat Race - 15.8
The Others - 10.6
Princess Diaries - 9.0
Captain Corelli's Mandolin - 8.4
Planet of the Apes - 6.7
Jurassic Park III - 4.7
American Outlaws - 4.2

Once again, these are only estimates.

I think this week will be another challenging one - especially picking the top 5 in the correct order.

Good Luck to us all!

It will be difficult it will be hard to predict Rat Race in particular. Its been getting a lot of advertizement recently but it does look a lot like Its a Mad Mad Mad World which could be bad or good. I think that western will bomb it looks bad. I am not sure about the Nicholas Cage pic, it looks boring to me plus what irrates me is the film is in Italy and none of the major actors is Italian, Bale and Cage-American, Cruz-Spanish, and Hurt-British. That is insane could they have put one Italian actor in a major role.

BALE ISNT AMERICAN, CONFLABIT! HE'S WELSH!

thats not the problem. Its that Cruz doesn't even attempt to sound Italian :)

I thought the movie was about the Italian invasion of GREECE.

:p :p :p

I've seen it's a Mad mad Mad Mad World. it has some of the greatest comedians and comic actors of all time, but it's not really that funny. :(

I'm wondering if this movie will have the same problem - the commercials didnt' seem particuarly funny, but I spent a lot of time thinking "Oh, look who's in it."

Well I thought the comercials looked funny. >=|

I thought Bubble Boy's commercials were funnier. :D

Of course RR has a Fresh rating right now at rottentomatoes, and the studio DID do a preview last weekend.

I dunno though.

I thought Its Mad Mad Mad World was funny at least some of it. I thought the scene when Winters destroyed the Gas Station was hillarious. The problem with the movie I think is it has the best comidians of all time and people expected too much. I mean its a funny movie just not the funniest ever or anything. This movie could have a better reception because the actors are lesser knows compared to the cast of the first movie. Really there is nobody of Milton Bearls calibur in the cast or for that matter Phil Silvers. If they wanted to really copy it they would have had to had Jim Carrey, Tim Allen, Robin Williams,Billy Crystal, Ben Stiller, Robert Deniro(to play Spencer Tracy), Cameron Diaz, Chris Rock, and throw in a couple of minor stars. Now a movie like that could never be done today because the cast would cost a 100 million probably. My point is with lesser known actors the movie but get better received because people might not expect that much from it compared to Mad Mad world.

Back to the Cage movie I didn't realize they were in Greece I thought it was one of the islands like Sicily. If its Greece then I take it back they are even dumber than I though none of the actors even look Greek not to mentione even sound Greek.

Good points about RR. I haven't seen MMMMW for a long time. I think it started badly with Jimmy Durante's extended dying scene. Parts were humorous, I just remember expecting a lot more.

RR does have one of the Zucker's directing it, so it has a decent chance of beign funny.

If the estimate had held I would have beat you out for the number 1 spot CMJ. As it is now you're lower than I am so you've got me beat. Just who is closer than you?

Jedieb
Aug 20th, 2001, 06:44:04 PM
I think I did pretty well. I got the correct order and the 3rd and 5th pick. Darth23 was closer to PD than I was but he picked it out of the top 5 so I don't think it will count. DaBoss looks like the big winner to me. I think he got both the 1st and 4th movie. But he didn't get the right order so I don't know how that will effect things. I'm glad I'm not keeping track of the scoring.

CMJ

I don't think those are the final numbers Daboss, just Sunday's estimates. I think the final numbers were a bit lower and gave you the #1 pick. I guess will have to wait until we're sure of the final numbers and our "official" contest results get posted.

DaBoSsNaStY
Aug 20th, 2001, 07:39:58 PM
indeed Jedieb. and good points!!

I thought I might have found something that would have given CMJ the extra push, that he would need to win this weekend!

I don't want to find some information that can make a difference for somebody else to win, and not post it. I find that very unethical, and shows very poor sportsmanship!

Two things I don't want associated with me; among other things as well:)
