Windtalkers. A War Woo film, with Nic Cage. Guarenteed classic

The Mummy Returns, Pearl Harbor, Tomb Raider, Atlantis: The Lost Empire, Final Fantasy, Jurassic Park 3, Planet of the Apes, Fellowship of the Ring.
Those are my guesses, of course those are probably all the obvious choices for 2001, but I think those will all make $100+ million.

1. HANNIBAL - 163.9M
I think HANNIBAL has a decent shot of ending in the top 5-7 films of the year. SPY KIDS will be the next film to reach 100M this year.
Darth23

True, true.
Could be next weekend, I think it will be a bit after that though. Still, a 20% drop over the weekend ain't too shabby.

haha, dang look what happened to Final Fantasy and Atlantis. Talk about wasted.
Last year wasn't too great for other animation studios (*cough* Titan A.E. and Rocky and Bullwinkle *cough*), but this year isn't even good for Disney. Looks like DreamWorks is going to take the crown soon ;)

Let's see, we'll have the 'big three' Monsters Inc., Harry Potter and Lord of the Rings, I wonder if anything else will make it.
Oceans 11? Ali? Shallow Hal? Spy Game?
I dunno. I'm sure there's a Sandra Bullock Romantic Comedy lurking out there somewhere.
Maybe with Nicholas Cage and Helen Hunt. ;)

How many 100 million dollar movies were there last year?
Jedi Master Carr
Nov 7th, 2001, 01:12:09 PM
I'm not sure, CMJ would know but I think he still busy with his move. I would say between 13-15 but that would be a guess. I think there will be more this year, I am certain there will be 16 counting the big 3, then I think ALI, and Oceans 11 both have good chances. Spy Game might, I can't think of anything else except for Vanilla Sky with Tom Cruise.
Jedieb
Nov 7th, 2001, 02:55:08 PM
Are we going to cut the list off on Dec. 31st? Or will we keep adding 02 returns to films released this year?
Darth23
Nov 8th, 2001, 09:19:24 AM
The list tradionally covers the total gross for every movie released before Jan 1.
Which means it will probably be updated until about April or May (or maybe June, even).
I think there were like 19 or 20 100 million movies in 2000 - 1 or 2 more than 1999.
----
I looked it up, it was 22 100 million dollar films.
In 1999 there were 21 100 million dollar movies.
http://www.worldwideboxoffice.com has a list you can customize. :-)
Jedi Master Carr
Nov 8th, 2001, 03:27:44 PM
Thats more than I would have though, now will 2001 have more we already at 13 and we are guarenteed to get 3 more. here are the other candidates, The Others need 4 more million will it get it? Shallow Hal, could be a surprise hit, Black Knight with Martin Lawerence, Vanilla Sky looks stupid but it has Tom Cruice, Spy Game it has Redford and Pitt so it could, Oceans 11 with all those big actors in it it has a chance, Ali it will probably be an Oscar contende so it will have a run like Castaway and should pass 100. I can't think of any others but there could be one or two surprises.
Darth23
Nov 8th, 2001, 07:03:22 PM
I don't think any of the movies that are close will make it. Mabye The Others - that SHOULD have made it, but I think the studio screwed up and didn't push it enough or release it on enough theaters when it was released.
Maybe a well-hyped re-release will do it.
In 1999 there were only two 90 million dollar movies, in 200 there were three. This year there have been FIVE movies that made it to 90 million, but probably won't hit 100.
Julia Roberts missed it with America's Sweethearts. You could argue that Legally Blonde and Cats & Dogs should have passed the mark also.

Jedieb
Dec 3rd, 2001, 11:13:21 PM
Well the "dissapointing" ;) HP should be passing RH2 soon and making its way towards Shrek. Monsters will be passing RH2 in a couple of weeks. I wonder if it will have enough steam to catch Shrek? Eisner's got to have something to help him get over all those Shrek height jokes. Seeing tiny little Faquad (sp?) waddle around was funny. :lol

LOL that was funny, one thing that will be weird if LOTR becomes the hit we all hope it is and makes close to 300 then we will have 3 of the top 5 films of 2001 come from the Nov-Dec period, anybody know if that has ever happened before?

Was that supposed to be Eisner? I'm so out of it. I have to say, watching Shrek in Orlando in the theater right outside the Universal Studios theme parks was pretty sureal. I wonder if it played at the Celebration movie theater.

BTW, looks like Shrek and Pearl Harbor have both left the building. For some reason, Atlantis, JP3 and POTA are still playing.

I have one question why is POTA still playing in theaters, it is the top 30 playing on 200 some screens, the rest of the summer films seems to be gone, unless Disney is still playing Pearl Harbor somewhere in there on going effort to get it too 200, so what is fox's goal to pass JP3?
Darth23
Dec 27th, 2001, 12:23:49 AM
They're waiting until POTA gets 180 million.
The real question is why is Atlantis still in the theaters. :p
Yahoo has a screwy l[i]st this week - it SAYS Dec 21-23, but it actually lists the Dec 12-25 totals.
HP is ahead of Ali because it made more in 5 days than Ali made in one day. :p
The theater totals look weird too. For the top 13, all are playing on more than 2000 screens except 1200 for How High and 1800 for Behind Enemy Lines. 4 are playing in more than 3000 theaters.

I decided to update since FOTR just past the 100 million mark here is the official results up to yesterday, and I can't tell if the numbers are estimates or not but I just wanted to get FOTR on there.
1 HARRY POTTER & THE SORCERER'S STONE 271,200,00
2 SHREK 267,665,011
3 MONSTERS INC, 227,930,000

8 PLANET OF THE APES 179,621,139
9 Hannibal 165,091,986
10 AMERICAN PIE 2 145,103,595
11 THE FAST AND THE FURIOUS 144,533,925
12 Lara Croft: Tomb Raider 131,168,070
13 Dr. Dolittle 2 112,952,899
14 Spy Kids 112,719,001
15 THE PRINCESS DIARIES 108,048,221
16 LOTR: THE FELLOWSHIP OF THE RING 107,997,000
17 OCEANS 11 106,610,00
So how far will FOTR get up the chart and second question will there be another film to add to this list? I guess ALI is a possibility, Black Hawk Down?, Jimmy Neutron?, A Beautiful Mind? or Vanilla Sky? (I think it will fall short).
Darth23
Dec 28th, 2001, 01:06:37 AM
Vanilla Sky? No.
Jimmy Neutron? I doubt it.
I still think only movies that plai wide should count for this year. :p
Jedi Master Carr
Dec 28th, 2001, 01:16:54 AM
Well since CMJ made the rules we're sticking to them:mneh. Still it might not matter, I'm not sure if either film will make it, I think Beautiful Mind has a shot, but I dobut Black Hawk Down will do it. Now Ali still has a chance, it should make about 20 million this weekend giving it probably about 35-37 million in 6 days, if it gets good word of mouth, I could see it eventually passing the 100 million dollar amount.
Master Yoghurt
Dec 28th, 2001, 02:12:09 AM
I think Ali could make it. Beautiful Mind might also make it. Other than that, I am a bit pesimistic. Oh, and I am fairly confident FotR will top the list eventually. :)

A couple of things to keep in mind about Ali though. It received some bad reviews and the first drop off was steep.

Well not too many changes this week, FOTR past RH 2 and looks next to pass Monsters INC maybe as early as next weekend and should still pass Shrek sometime later this month, I guess the big question now is can it get past Harry Potter. Looks like that Oceans 11 will enter the top 10 sometime soon, it may get as high as 8th but I doubt it will get any higher than that. it also looks like there will be at least two maybe 3 more films to add to this list. Vanilla Sky which needs only 12 million, A Beautiful Mind which should make it and Jimmy Neutron, another film that has a chance of making it.

Finally a new movie to add. Black Hawk Down should make it, the only other film with a chance is Vanilla Sky and it needs 2.5 million and it only made .5 million for the weekend so I don't know. FOTR will defitely be the #2 movie of the year it only needs a million to pass Shrek which is should do by Friday, it probably won't pass HP now unless it wins a lot of Oscars and that is probably the only way it will, still it has an impressive run especially for a 3 hour film.

It has been a good year, especially since November From Novemeber to January 5 movies (probably six when Black Hawk Down makes it 7 if Vanilla Sky can do it) made 100 million now that is impressive especially consider the two top movies (FOTR will pass Shrek there is no doubt about that) were from November and December, has that ever happened?

The end of the year was definantly extremely strong. What it does show is put a good movie out at any time and people WILL go see it.
It would be interesting to look at release dates, to see when the top 20 moives all time came out and see if Summer really is the big time for movies. OF you look here, 1/8 of the entire box office was done by three moives, all released late and they are still going.

Black Hawk Down could be the last unless Vanilla Sky can make 555,000 it is still in about 360 theaters and made a little more than 100,000 this past weekend, on that pace it would have to stay in theaters until April just to get it, and that will probably be the problem and I am not sure if it will still be any theaters in April.

Yeah, Vanilla Sky Finally did it, it took it forever though, it must have been on 99 for a month. Now there are two final questions will ABM make the top ten, it needs 20 to pass POTA and will FOTR pass HP it needs 15? I am guessing no to both. I think ABM will pass Hannibal and fall about 170. FOTR will probably make it to 310, or around there.

Jedi Master Carr
Apr 7th, 2002, 07:38:43 PM
If they make a sequel it will be worse than the original, because Burton has said he would not do it (he is mad at Fox for several reasons from what I have heard) and Waldberg said he won't do it if Burton won't, also the original POTA sequels were never as good as the original especially the first sequel which was just plain terrible.

Yeah, they should just leave that the revamped POTA franchise alone, unless they can guarantee to redeem it after the relative "failure" of the first one.

Probably budget theaters I guess, well it passed ROTJ but if it doesn't pass The Lion King it won't be staying in the top 10 for too long because both Spiderman and AOTC will pass it. Now LOTR and ABM are the only two movies on that list that are still playing. Any Chance LOTR can pass Lion King? I thought Lion King made 311 but I am not sure. It will probably have to pass Lion King to stay in the Top ten because AOTC will probably pass it soon.

Didn't realize it still was. I guess LOTR has a chance doesn't come out on video/DVD until August so it should be in theaters for at least another month or two.

NAh, wont happen. Surely LOTR will be pulled from theatres when the DVD comes out. It's just cool to know the next movie to be booted from the top ten will be The Lion King
Although I do see a re-release of FOTR being likely in the not too distant future.

YAY! I cannot wait to see Lion King booted.
I have no idea what the appeal of that movie was. I thought it was a lousy effort from Disney. I even prefer Lilo and Stitch.

I've seen The Lion King so many times I've got to be in double digits. It's one of my son's favorite movies. I think it's a great movie, that obviously appealed to both children and adults. It's box office run was phenomenal. You sell that many tickets today and you're looking at over $400M. Remember, many of those tickets were sold at cheaper children's prices. Watching Simba avenge his father's death is great stuff. Throw in great voice work by James Earl Jones, and you've got a great modern Disney movie.

Jul 21st, 2002, 07:06:55 PM
Obviously most people felt as you do, EB. There must be some hidden appeal I simply do not get. I never much cared for it. Not a bad movie, I'd give it 2.5 stars, but I really like Aladdin and other past Disney classics. I was never a fan of The Lion King. It looked really stupid to me in theaters so I never saw it, and then I remember it being a big deal, so I later saw it on video. Then after that I saw it again in French class, all in French, lol. Yikes...
Yes it is a very successful movie. Amazingly successful, even in other countries and whatnot.
Star Wars, The Lion King, and those types of movies have a real disadvantage in dollar revenue comparisons instead of ticket sales because you know that Star Wars' average ticket prices are much lower than the national average, same goes with Lion King. They just use this idiotic formula, "Oh gee AOTC made $300 million (for instance), so since the average ticket price is $5.87 (or whatever), then you just divide the gross by the average ticket price." WRONG! You should find out the average ticket price for a PG movie, for a PG-13 movie, and for an R movie, and then figure it out that way because obviously a PG movie is going to have more kid admissions than an R movie. That's just clear as day.
JMK
Jul 21st, 2002, 07:06:56 PM
Good point, all those kiddie tickets probably held it back. But what were they expecting? Seniors to gobble it up? Only if James Earl Jones was actually given top billing! :lol

Jul 21st, 2002, 07:16:10 PM
LOL!!!
I think think Lion King is actually quite good movie and it deserved it's time in the top ten. I Think it's one of Disney's better efforts. It was a movie that appealed to a wide demographic and not just kids, else it would not have scored 300 odd million.
