lucas has apparently confirmed that ray park will be in episode 2, though not as darth maul. i just wonder if it was misunderstood somewhere that maybe he'd be there as a stunt guy or something.

on a sadder note, hugh quarshie is said to have declined reprising his role as panaka in episode 2.

thoughts?

am i making it hard for those wanting to avoid spoilers to do so?

id think parks would be a fight coordinator/ trainer for the film, and maybe stuntman, i dont really think hed be up for any big acting role since hes really not that good of an actor,
but hes great at all the other stuff i mentioned.

as for panaka, thats not such a big dissapointment for me, he wasnt all to pivital in TPM, so i wont miss him,

The Panaka thing seems too good to be true! :)

I thought some of the worst acting in the movie came from him!

i wonder if they'll give any mention about him in the next movies, or if they'll write him right out. i hope uncle george didn't have any part for panaka in the next movie. i'd hate to see a replacement. i'd rather see him written right out if they had to resort to a replacement...

Panaka defending time!

It isn't his fault, it is the script. Much as I love TPM, I understand that a highly reguarded theatre actor can not be terrible. His lines were terrible. It is a shame, I liked the character, with a lot of possibilities.

Well, at least Ralph Brown will be back (Don't even THINK of losing him!)

i wonder if they weren't paying him enough, or if the script sux again (provided he saw it, which i doubt because no one else has...)

There were some lines that he had that I thought should have been delivered by another character -- but he overacted many of his lines, and his delivery was so stiff on some lines that should have been more natural.

Can't blame everything on the script! I mean, the line "There's too many of them" is not badly written, but it was badly played.

The line, "They'll lose their trade franchise, and they'd be finished" was not a bad line either, it should not have gone to him, but one of the advisors, and that was the fault of the script, but he still looked as if he was looking for his cue and then reciting the line flatly.

Just because he's a respected theater actor doesn't mean he has the ability to act in movies . . . two different animals. Some actors can do it, others can't.

His recitation of "R2-D2," (As if announcing it to the audience that "this is the famous droid, r2-d2 from the other movies") was just bad acting, too.

I see him as how Jar-Jar has become- the "How can I dislike TPM" person. I loved the way he said R2-D", it sounded like he didn't know, as he shouldn't.

I can't believe that if Lucas had intended him to be in more than one film, he wouldn't have signed him up for as many as he wanted. It think most likely what happened is that GL thought that Panaka could have maybe a couple of scenes (decided at the last minute) and quarshie declined. Panaka lines weren't great, but they were adequate.

I think the main problem was him trying to act tough, and failing miserably. He just looked like a big baby next to the Jedi. If he had just been more natural. The "There's too many of them!" line for instance, could have been better said in a resigned tone, rather than snapping the words out. Remember when C3PO asked Luke why they could go and look for R2 on tatooine in ANH? That kind of resigned tone to the voice would have worked well there I think.

Just my opinion though.

Doc is exactly right. I mean Exactly right.

The first thing the professor told us in Intro to Stage Performance (and I mean the Very first thing) was that stage performance is a VERY different craft than TV acting or movie acting. Stage performance requires the actor to emote on a much much more intense and even exaggerated manner than TV acting or movie acting. This is because you need to project an emotion in a way that's obvious to someone sitting 30-50 feet away -- who can't see simple facial twitches and quirky expressions. Stage acting is much more anmiated (in terms of body movement) because your body needs to communicate what your face can't. You often see over-emphasis and broad sweeping movements.

TV and movie actors are closer to real-life performances because you're allowed to be much more subtle -- a facial twitch here, a gleam in your eye there -- and it'll come across nicely on screen. Stage actors can't do that because the audience can't see it.

So when a veteran stage actor performs on screen it often appears over the top (like over-acting), because that same stage exaggeration is still there. Look at Kenneth Brannagh's performances in movies (back then that is, he's a little more controlled now).

Panaka wasn't all that important, so I don't think a replacement is necessary. After all, Ep2 takes place 10 years later, so it's very possible to have a "changing of the guard" (no pun intended... alright maybe).

i didn't mind his acting, but then again, i'm no critic :)
he seemed to me in the movie that he was acting tough because HE was the queen's protector, not the jedi, and he felt like all the time he put in as the queen's guardian had meant nothing and now he was being undermined. it was almost as if he was pouting. <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/images/emoticons/ohwell.gif ALT=":\">

I won't miss him in Episode 2, mainly because he was a secondary character and I didn't see any room for development. He's the Captain of the Royal Guard. It's his job. He does his job and he seems happy with doing it. In Episode 2 he would be basically the same character doing the same thing. Rather boring, IMO. His character was a welcome addition to TPM, but I see no real reason to have him in Episode 2.
If they wanted Panaka in Episode 2, they could just change the script so that a new character was Captain of the guard and I doubt it would impact the overall story any.

Unless Panaka is Fett!? :)

yeah, he's getting revenge on the jedi for taking his job of protecting the queen away from him. it probably isn't all that outlandish of an idea, many people have brought up the fact that panaka may have been the leak that let the sith know they were on tatooine. provided that's how they were found in the first place.

and apparently park is NOT in episode 2 anymore. yes, that's right, a complete reversal of what i said to start the thread.
