The total filesize for both your Avatar and signature cannot exceed 30k. And before you ask: There is no way that I know of to disable Avatars from one post to the next, although it's on my list of things to look into.

Isn't there an option to place a limit on the filesize of an avatar before uploading? Or is it only limited to physical size?

Yes, there is. :) Thinking of a reasonable setting now. It wouldn't be fair to set it too low: Some of use don't use image sigs. :p

Yep, I just found it. It's set on 20kb for now, though I think we could knock that down a bit. :)

Maybe 15k.

But that is for uploading to our host if we allowed it, I do believe.

I'm pretty sure that it's the general filesize limitation.

It's for ALL avatars. At least it appears so from the description - it's the same as the physical size description (which does apply to all avatars).

Yes, it looks like you guys are right. I just had another look at the option. :)

Maximum filesize limit is now 15k. That should be plenty.

:: changes it to 1k ::

:p

Edit: I didn't change it BTW - it was Nup who got the numbers wrong. :)

1536 bytes is 1.5 KB :x I changed it to 15036 bytes. 15 KB. :)

Whoops... :lol

Wonder why it didn't disable all the current Avatars then? Maybe it only prevents new ones from exceeding the limit?

Yes thats what it does. I had one Avatar to test that was already over the limit and it still functioned. I went to update it with a more streamlined image and it wouldn't allow me to use one that was only 9 KB.

Back to the drawing board then. :\

It also appears that all avatars are stored locally on our host from what I can gather. I re-upped that Avatar to the same location it had been previously and it didn't effect the filesize of the previous posts until I manually went through and updated it to the 9KB one from the 16 KB one.

Yeah, I noticed that when I tried saving Luke's Avatar so I could clean up the picture a bit. It had a different filename along the lines of "vba0967.jpg"

However, I'm not 100% certain that they're stored locally: Right Click >> Properties makes it look like a redirect of sorts.

Moreover, I don't see any of the files on in the directory listing of the site.

They should be stored locally - at least that's my experience with other vBs. That also allows users to upload files from their computer should we ever allow that option.

the vba in the filename seems to me like vBulliten avatar. And looking at the Avatar options, the wording does make it appear that they are "uploading" it from another website.

Well, I was just browsing around looking for where they would be stored while I had my bedtime snack, and I didn't see them. But I finished eating now, so off I go! :angel
