On what weekend should we start Euro Nerd 2014?

So we already figured out that August would most likely be the best option for Euro Nerd 2014 because Dee has got "stuff" to do in September.

Just keep in mind that arriving before the weekend (thursday or friday) would be best because this will give us more flexability. So in other words it would be good if you chose a weekend where you can arrive before Saturday!

At this point, I can come whenever. Having said that... would it make sense to aim for the tail end of August so we can dodge as much of the summer holiday crowds at tourist places / airports / etc, or is Germany so organised that it won't be too much of an issue?

I voted for the later half of the month, since we have a bank holiday in the UK then anyway. Saves me on taking an extra day off work :D

I'm not worried about Germany being over-run with summer holiday crowds, really. Germany is a great place but it's not exactly a major holiday destination for families wanting some summer sun.

I vote for the latter part of the month so I can roll Labor Day into the pool of days I can take off since it's a bank holiday for us.

Are there any good bierfests during this time of year?

Also what is our travel itinerary gonna look like or is this early to discuss?

The travel "itinerary" depends on 3 factors:

1. At how many days/weeks are we looking at?
2. Are we all going to show up at the same weekend/day. Too many arrival days will make things complicated. Past nerds have shown that we will need some recreational days now and then. Plus this time jet lag will be worse because most people lose instead of gain hours. I think Jenny will agree that the way back is always worse (I would not ask Jace since his sleep cycle is fucked up anyway).
3. Budget: At some point we will have to compare our intrests, money and time and build consenses.

Bierfests
I will have to look at this matter but we can always go to a nice Biergarten, Bierkeller or even a Bier Museum.

I think we are doing at least two weeks maybe? Possibly three? And the most important thing besides beer for me are tapestries

That's a very manly sentence you've got right there, Charley. ;)

This IS a castle, and we have MANY tapestries...and if you are Scottish Lord, I am Mickey Mouse!

That being said, for me personally, earlier is August is better because I have a major work event happening in September that I can't take time off to close to (if that makes any sense!).

I wrote my exam on 15th century tapestries showing the legend of cesar. They are shown in Switzerland --> don't joke, it could happen...

I think probably the best idea is to build the length of the trip, the budget, etc around our US visitors.

It's a much bigger deal for you guys, so I think important that you get to do the stuff you want to do... so although I voted on this poll, I am honestly cool with whenever.

Charley

Martina I would legit be pretty excited about that. :)

Also I'm assuming the trip is going to stay pretty firmly on the continent, yes? No travels to the UK or whatnot? Because I live in the US and I have a somewhat malleable concept of European geography, I just assume that you're all 30 minutes away from each other and thats why you have all those wars

Being more than 1 hour away from something is already considered as a real distance here.

I have looked at the poll so far but I still have no idea what date would serve us best since most of the votes are focused on the last and the first weekend. The question now is what is the prefered date for the remaining usual suspects and maybe newcomers.

If I read your posts correctly this far everyone that has voted has only shown his or her preferences except for Dee who is not able to take days off in september.

What about Thursday 14.08.2014 until Wednesday 03.09.2014? That would be 3 weeks and cover both Bank Holiday (25.08.) and Labour Day (01.09.).
Dee, if you have to be back by September, you only have to shorten the holiday by half a week.

That would work well for me.

Actually, that sounds really really good :) if we settle on those dates, I'll start working on my bosses now. At worst, I'll have to leave a little early like you said, Martina.

*glee*

This just might work! :eee

It's looks like I won't be able to make this since my work is full of jerks who think only certain people get 3 weeks of vacation after working for the same amount of years. :grumble

That combined with it seems that Kris and I will be making a big push towards buying a house next year probably means my budget is shot.

:( guess seeing only some of you weirdos on around New Years will have to fill my Nerd quota for 2014

:( Your work kind of sucks balls :shakefist...

We will miss you, two, but August 2014 is still 14 months away and maybe things will change till then

Also, if necessary you could just fly out for two weeks... and then we could kidnap you, and use excessive quantities of alcohol to keep you subdued. Pretty sure it doesn't count as holiday time if you're being held hostage.

Crusader
Jun 19th, 2013, 08:23:54 AM
That is a valid point. The two weeks thing not the "keeping Sarah and Kris as hostage" thing since that would be a shitty plan even by your standards. We always said that we will plan this thing based on time and budget.

Captain Untouchable

that would be a shitty plan even by your standards.

They're Americans... but they'll be in Europe, which means they won't have their guns: they'll be as defenceless as they ever get. They'll be unfamiliar with the local surroundings, unfamiliar with the local language, their access to local currency and to telecommunications will be limited, and because they're acclimatised to the weather in California the comparative cold of Germany will dull their minds and make their reflexes sluggish. Plus, as the both of us know from Castle: if someone is kidnapped and in a foreign country, coordinating with local law enforcement can make it extremely difficult for people back home to work towards securing their release... and awesome as Sarah is, I don't think Nathan Fillion will be jetting out to hire any sleazy French assassins to rescue her.

As kidnapping plans go, it's actually a pretty unshitty one. :colbert

Yes... I may be able to swing a week/a week and a half so I can still manage to not kill myself during the year by taking a few sporadic days off (We seriously get next to no holidays either. I think they'd make people come in on Christmas if they could get away with it).

We''ll just have to see >_<
