A week that began with Yahoo’s $1.1 billion deal for Tumblr got even stranger this morning with Amazon Publishing’s announcement of Kindle Worlds, billed as the first commercial publishing platform for fan fiction. In short, fanfic writers can now earn royalties for certain corporate-sanctioned stories.

For the launch, Amazon Publishing has secured licenses from Alloy Entertainment, the book-packaging division of Warner Bros. Television, for Cecily von Ziegesar’s Gossip Girl, Sara Shepard’s Pretty Little Liars and L.J. Smith’s The Vampire Diaries — all bestselling young-adult series that have spawned hit television shows. More licenses are expected to be announced soon.

If Star Wars gets licensed we could all start making money off this site, FINALLY. ;)

It will be fascinating to watch how this develops, which intellectual properties become involved and what restrictions are placed on the content.

Now nerds are able to pay for reading slash fiction!

Restrictions already include no pornographic texts or excessive profanity, so I would guess your slash fiction will have to stay out of the approved Fanfiction marketplace. :p

What I find interesting so far is the particular titles that are on this list. These are all titles where fan fiction is a) usually aimed at a female audience, and b) usually centred on the main characters of the show.

I think it'll be more interesting when properties with a broader universe where you can more easily slot in original characters and more creative story arcs. Once that starts happening, it's the kind of thing I might find myself tempted to do, if only in the (probably futile) hope that I'd manage to attract the attention of showrunners and get asked to write an episode. :uhoh

Start your Arrow or Smallville fanfiction now, Jace. I'm sure they're next if they can get DC in line. :p

I can't imagine (yes I can) the dreck they'll have to sort through if they get permission for Supernatural. >_<

Bonus points if you can find a Supernatural fan fiction that doesn't have Dean sexing either Sam or Castiel.

>_<

^ Edit: Probably Dean's face at the time, too.
