So, apparently we don't already have a thread for this!

Two actors have been cast for this movie already. A little while back it was reported (http://www.firstshowing.net/2013/zero-dark-thirty-star-chris-pratt-lands-guardians-of-the-galaxy-lead/) that Chris Pratt from Parks and Recreation and Zero Dark Thirty would be playing Starlord, the obligatory dude from Earth in this movie.

Today, they're reporting (http://io9.com/5984635/khal-drogo-cast-as-drax-the-destroyer-in-guardians-of-the-galaxy) that Jason Momoa of Baywatch Hawaii, Stargate Atlantis and Game of Thrones fame (not to mention Conan the Barbarian infamy) is coming onboard as Drax the Destroyer.

The remaining uncast members of the team are Gamorra - apparently the adoptive daughter of Thanos - as well as a raccoon and a talking tree... well unless the rumours of them sneaking Carol Danvers in there as well have any truth to them.

Since filming is slated to begin at Shepperton Studios in June this year, I expect we'll be hearing more casting news soon!

I don't know anything about this comic either. :)

So I just read that they're relaunching the comic book as part of the current Marvel NOW! marketing thing... out March 23rd, written by Brian Michael Bendis (:swoon:) and drawn by Steve Mcniven (:love)

Welp, gonna have to get that.

Speculation is that Karen might be playing Death, the consort/girlfriend of Thanos.

Which means she might be in more than just this movie. :ohno

And also, Benicio del Toro just got cast in an undisclosed role, but he's been cast for appearances in several movies... so people are guessing that probably means he's mayhaps Thanos.

Edit:

According to a Glasgow newspaper, this (http://media.comicbookmovie.com/images/users/uploads/10300/1368209248.jpg) is who Karen is going to be playing. That's Angela (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Angela_%28comics%29), who was created by Neil Gaiman and was in Spawn for ages... Marvel just won a big legal battle, and now she's getting incorporated into mainstream Marvel comics.

So... Karen as either a bikini-clad bounty hunter or Mistress Death (http://sciencefiction.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/05/1511138-rescan006.jpg)? :cyduck

I wonder if this means that Ronan the Accuser and/or the Kree will be in Avengers 2 as well.

Since Star Lord is from Earth, (and technically Rocket Raccoon and Drax too) maybe they bring humanity to Ronan's attention. If he shows up with his big-ass hammer and demands to fight Earth's Mightiest Heroes (he does that sort of thing), that could be a good way to get Iron Man, Hulk, and Thor to come in from the proverbial cold... plus, Kree means Mar-Vell, and Mar-Vell means Carol Danvers, and if Joss Whedon has written an Avengers sequel that doesn't introduce Carol Danvers I will find him and stab him between the eyes with a fork. :mad

Yeah... which is sad because I guess this points towards the prospect of a Nova movie rather than a Carol Danvers appearance.

Marvel Studios head honcho Kevin Feige describes the composition of the team, in the process revealing that Zoe Saldana's Gamora doesn't start out as a hero:

"They are an unlikely band. It's pure circumstance that brings them all together throughout the course of the movie. Rocket has been genetically and mechanically altered, he's an experiment from one part of the galaxy. Groot is a species that happens to look like trees look, and is quite communicative if you can understand the different inflections in the way he says, "I am Groot." Peter Quill left Earth in the mid '80s, but when we meet back up with him he's very much a citizen of the universe. Drax has one goal and one goal only, which is to kill Ronan because of a past tragedy. When we meet Gamora, she's a bad guy working with Ronan and Nebula and Korath, and by extension for Thanos. Gamora doesn't necessarily like doing that anymore, and tries to find a new path for herself. But she has a reputation as the deadliest woman in the galaxy that people aren't greeting her with open arms."

He also confirms the movie's contemporary setting and reveals that Ronan the Accuser is indeed the movie's primary villain:

"The general answer is yes. It's not exactly revealed what year or month it is in relation to the other Phase Two films. But yes, it's the same time… [It’s] certainly more [connected to the larger Marvel universe] than the others. We've already said that Thanos plays a part in it and is a character in it. That in and of itself should tell you it's connected to the other worlds. Ronan The Accuser is very much the main bad guy. And Thanos is lurking above it all. You will learn more about Thanos in Guardians, for sure. Certainly you'll get more than the one turn around and smirk. You'll get much more than that!"

Did we talk about Bradley Cooper playing a raccoon in the movie?

Because, lol. I admittedly know nothing about Guardians of the Galaxy but I will of course be watching this. :D

When someone asked Marvel to make a movie about Bradley Cooper climbing Vin Diesel like a tree, I'm pretty sure Rocket Raccoon and Groot weren't what they had in mind. :uhoh

Saw it. Loved it.

This might be the strongest stand-alone entry in the Marvel movie universe thus far. Looking forward to seeing where they take this in the next few years.

I agree with everything Figrin says, it was SO good. Saw it this morning. Just an unbelievable romp, full of smart-assery, Groot, and talking raccoons.

loved it.

I saw a racoon with a machine gun and lovable tree beat the shit out of bad guys.

I'm just going to award this 10/10 - not for being perfect but the fact Marvel actually went there and it worked. There are so many ways this movie could have been bad and yet it's just not. It's great. It's funny (hysterically!), smart and absoluty top shelf entertainment.

There are two credits stingers, both are magnificent. Especially if you understand the final one, it is the single most WTF then have hysterics moment in movies in years. There's some though that GOTG is a real "Star Wars" movie moment, both in scope and also how it brings something new to the screen that will ignite the imagination. I agree with that. There really hasnt been anything like this for yeeeeeears

What a great summer Marvel Studios gave us, 3 of the 4 movies they put out were smart, entertaining instant classic comic book movies. The only one that missed the mark for me was The Amazing Spider-Man 2. But a .750 batting average is still crazy successful.

GOTG is awesome, hysterical entertainment, a complete success from beginning to end. I loved it, and it's safe to say that the crowd I saw it with today loved it as well. I swear the laughter at a certain little someone dancing to the Jackson 5 at the end was almost deafening. And that final stinger...brilliant!

Marvel Studios doesn't do the Spider-Man movies, right? The rights are owned by Sony or something. (Like F4 and x-men not being Marvel Studios properties.)

GotG was pure, unfiltered fun injected with a horse-sized needle. I especially loved how the humor was on all levels; from laugh out loud funny to the little quips which make you crack a knowing grin and chuckle. And yes, I teared up something fierce more than once.

Rocket and Groot for couple of the year. :3:

Oh hell yes!

The amazing thing about this is that Groot was just so dangerous and murderous, yet just so innocent and cute. That big goofy grin he had after he finished ripping the bad mooks to pieces was utterly priceless! Like, look at me Rocket, I did good! - you want to hug him but at the same time he can and does rip mooks limb from limb without hesitation.

And Rocket looks cute and innocent, yet he's even more outright smart and dangerous of the lot of them. There's so many tropes they could have fallen for in creating Rocket, yet it's all avoided and he really just comes off as a legitimate badass.

In fact the real success of the movie is that it the concept invivted trope after trope, yet they dodged it and it stands up really well.

I knew nothing about GOTG from the comics, exactly like I knew zero about Iron Man years ago or even anything about Marvel comics. What an intro :D

Went all by me onesies on Thursday evening after work.

Hands down, best Marvel movie for me so far. Like many here, I knew nothing of this IP before the movie and now I just want to know more. I thought Chris Pratt was awesome as Peter Quill. I think the greatest thing about this movie was that the entire adventure felt like Starlord really was making it up as he went along, and - and this is the important point - it didn't feel cheap as a result but completely legitimate. Our heroes were just crazy enough and mish-mash enough to pull something out of the bag like they did, and it worked brilliantly.

But I really was not expecting four out of five of them to get offed by the end! Very bold move by the writers there, and I think it's a sign of things to come as we move into Marvel's Phase 3 movies. Okay, I am of course being a complete LOL troll here.

I really loved just how diverse a colour palette was in this movie. The early scene where Starloard is on that planet looking for the orb was very dark and brooding, Nowhere was an explosion of neon, the prison was low-lit red/brown/orange, while Xandar was almost like Starfleet Headquarters with it's lovely fountains and glistening white/steel architecture. The very look of the film had a badass yet playful attitude about it.

I thought the universe was as vibrant as anything from Star Wars and deliberately more fun. (Star Wars is fun but it's meant to be serious - Imperials are bastards!)
