Yeah. It just hit for reals today. It had a fake release a week or two ago. But yeah, I've been waiting four hours for my purchase confirmation email so I have the necessary activation key to turn the damn game on. No official word from Square-Enix over the issue so we're all chocking it up to server overload.

I'll try again tomorrow :/

Playing System Shock 2. I've just recorded Episode 1 of my new Let's Play. FRAPS and the Dark Engine (game engine that Looking Glass Studios developed for Thief and System Shock 2) don't play very well so the raw footage is very dark. But I found an awesome program that can not only correct the colour but also get the raw footage file sizes down from almost 4GB to less than 200MB.

I'll probably wait to upload this video for a few days. Might make Fridays my Sci-Fi upload day. Sci-Fi Friday sounds kinda cool. As such, System Shock 2 will be the first game to occupy that slot on my Youtube channel release schedule. It also takes the pressure off producing videos for certain games on certain days. I'll upload two 30-min videos each day if I can, so recording a few hours of System Shock 2 in one sitting gives me say 6 weeks worth of System Shock 2 videos for that slot. So I could then not play that game for a few weeks. Essentially it will mean I can have my content ready well in advance.

Since upgrading my CPU, motherboard and RAM several months ago, rendering footage is almost 5 times faster than it was. 10 minutes of video now takes around 15 minutes to render instead of the 50 minutes to an hour it did previously with my old components. And now that I've sussed out Adobe Premiere's render settings, I'll be able to use its advanced editing options and effects while still producing high-quality videos. If anybody watched my Minecraft videos (edited and rendered with Avidemux), you'll see they're better quality than my Fallout: New Vegas ones (using Adobe Premiere), but the F:NV videos had a cool title screen fade in. I can now have the cool titles along with the quality I felt those New Vegas videos were lacking, thanks to my improved understanding of bitrate and how Youtube treats your footage once you've uploaded it.

Stay tuned for my System Shock 2 Let's Play series!

As I mentioned in another post, I'm gonna give each day of the week a theme for my videos, such as Sci-Fi Friday, where I'll dedicate that slot to a sci-fi game of any gaming genre, be it FPS, RPG, RTS etc. Some slots, such as Minecraft Monday, will be constant - the game won't change. But others might. If I feel like uploading an episode of, say, Starcraft 2, then that could appear on a Friday instead of System Shock 2. I'll likely try to upload with some consistency, such as having "Seasons" for each game. Maybe upload 6 hours of System Shock 2 over 6 weeks, then switch the game and later return to continue with System Shock 2 after a week or two of shorter side projects. Multiplayer sessions or shorter games, or even one-off RTS missions/matches could work there.

Another game I'll likely make a constant feature (at least for a while) will be the Stalker series. Since there's three of them and they can be fairly lengthy playthroughs considering the mods I use, I'd get a lot of footage from those games for it to fulfill the role of a constant slot. Stalker Sunday perhaps!? I might do a Retro Wednesday, which I think I mentioned would be games of at least a minimum age (which leaves the genre itself completely open!). I'd likely allow this to change quite frequently, such as a new game every two to three weeks.

Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays will be completely optional, with no scheduled uploads. That way I can take a break, catch up on editing/pre-uploading if needed, or release something one-off if I fancy it.

It's quite exciting and I'm really looking forward to it. The most subscribers I've had is like 49 or something so it'd be awesome to break then 50 mark and start climbing to 100 and beyond. Hopefully the new content, consistency of the release schedule and the variation and themes will keep people interested. The added structure will really help keep my attention and it'd be great if you guys would subscribe, check out the videos and cheer me on both here and in the video comments.

Jenny and Jace, if you read this - it'd be awesome if you guys still wanted to have some Minecraft multiplayer mayhem and record it.

But it runs on multiple system has got fairly low system specs so this might be a fun thing to do for a weekend.

It is grand theft horses! So the narrative is outstanding but you really play that game for the landscape, the horses and the wildlife.

The world is not like Skyrim where every citizen is following his or hers own schedule during the day but the design is still beautyfull and makes this world feel dense and believeable.

Red Dead Redemption is Rockstars best game in the last 5 years, the only game that was nearly as enjoyable was "The Ballad of Gay Tony" (but how could a game with such a title ever fail me).

Been exploring the galaxy in FTL non-stop since it was released on Friday afternoon. So far I've beaten the final boss twice and unlocked 3 of the extra 8 ships: the Stealth Ship which starts with advanced sensors and cloaking but no shields; the Engi Ship which starts with an Ion Blaster to disable enemy systems and an Anti-ship drone to attack with; and the Federation Cruiser which has a Burst Laser and a slow charging but powerful Artillery laser.

My early tactics are always the same: disable weapons and keep them offline while I whittle down the enemys hull. But once I get a teleporter and a couple of Mantis men, the fun really starts as I board the enemy ship and kill the crew, which yields more loot from the in-tact ship.

My only two gripes with it are that 1) it takes too long for boarders to die from asphyxiation once you've vented oxygen from the room and 2) some of the more powerful weapons are pretty useless alone but are so power-hungry that its hard to pair them with anything strong enough to keep enemy shields down long enough to use them.

I'm sure player feedback will result in tweaks and patches soon enough. Despite this, I'm having a blast!

I'm hopelessly enamored with RDR. The environments are gorgeous and partially remind of being back at my mom's place, and I've found myself stopping to watch the sun set and/or rise. The thunderstorms are still my favorite so far, since they actually make me feel almost drenched by just watching them. The little mini-games are fun as well, though admittedly I've only dabble mostly in horseshoes. Five-Finger Fillet is interesting in a manner of speaking, and I haven't branched out into the poker or blackjack games yet (I'm terrible at both of those as is).

I do seem to have a tendency to go through horses like paper plates though, hehe. First horse was dumped in favor of a horse gifted on me; then that one was killed by a wolf. Roped and broke in a nag after that just to get me back to town, then I rescued a wagon driver and traded in the nag for one of the dead thieves' horses. After making my way to Thief's Landing, that horse was promptly stolen, so I got my hands on another one which I accidentally ran off a cliff and killed. So far my current horse is still alive, but we shall see for how much longer ^_^;

And on the subject of horses, the amount of attention that was given to the gaits is amazing. The horses do flying lead changes depending on which way you turn; this made me grin like a fool when I first noticed it.

I'm still not super far into the story yet, and have only just got the Gatling gun away from the mine, but I'm still loving it to pieces. The dialogue is topnotch, and the game as a whole really feels authentic.

The more I play as an Elementalist or an Engineer, the more impressed I get with the whole area event thing on Guild Wars 2, and the skill swapping.

With some skill slot tweaks, I can tailor my Engineer to the kind of world events that are going on - I can focus on turrets and mines if it's a zone defence / kill everything in this room/field event, or swap to moves that move me quickly between long and close range (rocket boots, jump shots, knockback shots, etc) if I'm up against a single target. I've never played any class that had turrets before (not even in Mass Effect), and I'm really impressed by how much fun it is. I really hope the Level 20 skills are all shit though - I already have more desirable skills than skill slots.

My Elementalist on the other hand is an AOE beast right now. You can swap between the four elements (Earth / Water / Air / Fire) with the F keys, and each one has a different specialisation, sort of. Fire tends to give AOE effects (there's this cool one where I roll backwards leaving behind a trail of fire, which the mob then runs through when it tries to attack me), while Air has a "magic missile" type multiple target attack mixed with status effects, and Water focuses mostly on AOE healing.

The only thing I don't like about Engineer and Elementalist is the fact that they don't have the option to switch between two weapon sets. If you were able to swap between staff and scepter with the Elementalist you'd have access to all of your good spell abilities really easily; and being able to swap from the high damage rifle to the status effects of the pistol/shield combo with the Engineer would make a big difference for me in world events.

Sure, I can swap weapons by pulling up my inventory while not in combat... it's just awkward.

Zereth Lancer
Sep 28th, 2012, 09:04:33 AM
Everyone I know who has gotten to level 80 with the Engineer has complained that they have no damage in the end game. I do agree that the elementalist is a blast. I was leveling up one using primarily Earth with lots of condition damage bonuses to make the bleeds really hurt. Personally I think the Elementalist is the most complicated of the classes because you have the four elements per weapon. Just unlocking each ability takes forever, and gives you the option to switch from one to the other for clutch plays. So much to be doing at once.

Engineers on the other hand are kind of boring with the limited weapon types. One of the things I love about the warrior (my main) is that they have tons of weapon choices. They can use almost ever weapon in the game except for the caster weapons (staff, scepter, etc). Greatsword is my favorite, of course. Spin spin spin.

Captain Untouchable
Sep 28th, 2012, 12:48:52 PM
I don't know anything about the end game, but Engineer definitely feels like a "teamwork" class, so it doesn't surprise me. I'm very glad to be playing the Asura personal story - you get lots of NPCs with you during battles right from the get-go. I can imagine it being pretty tough to progress through the personal story with a Silvari Engineer.

Some of the Earth stuff for Elementalist is cool - I find that's more useful when I'm on my lonesome. If there are other people around drawing aggro, it's hard to exploit skills that require the enemy to come charging at you. It definitely keeps you thinking... I just wish I could have the first three Air+Scepter abilities instead of the first three Air+Staff abilities - not a big fan of Gust really, and I'm not really convinced that blindness ever makes that much of a difference.

My Warrior is rocking double axes (yes, I'm playing as Glen ^_^;) as well as a longbow, since those can be pretty useful for laying down AOEs during the "boss fight" world events.

My Guardian on the other hand has a greatsword... I'm pairing that with a sword and shield combo - greatsword is fantastic when you're in the thick of it and are surrounded by mobs, but I find the shield helps when I'm in a protracted battle and need to be able to push my enemy back so I can regen health. I try and keep a decent staff knocking around too - it's the only ranged weapon the Guardian gets, and it also gives you an awesome "You shall not pass!" ability. :eee

Alexei Tvarivich
Sep 28th, 2012, 01:51:06 PM
I enjoy the hammer on my Guardian. I enjoy the level of control it gives. It's great when you play with a buddy because you can just utterly lock down a mob while your partner deals the damage.

In general most of the abilities feel better in the team framework, and that makes me a little sad because I don't often get into groups unless it's for an event. The Warhorn, for example, falls completely flat when soloing. The buffs do not usually make up for the lack of damage. Even on my Earth Elementalist (scepter, dagger combo) I have a lot of cool AoE stuff that great in huge teamfights but alone I'll die before I can get them off because of the large cast time on some of them.

My biggest pet peeve are the friendly NPCs. Especially the ones that help you with your personal story. I've raged quit my personal story several times due to the NPC companion being a complete idiot and either standing around not attacking, or appearing to not do any damage. It's clear the quests are designed to need you and your companion(s) to beat it but your companion(s) are next to useless. At best they can tank some damage but do not do much in return. For example, I just had a personal story where I can to investigate the sewers of Lions Arch. Underwater combat is incredibly aggravating at it's best and now I'm down there fighting groups of enemies that keep clipping through the walls and a companion that follows them and then get's trapped on the other side of the wall. Made it to the end fight and he charges in and aggros the entire immediate area of enemies. We get destroyed. All the while he's doing next to do damage. Seriously, I sat there while bleeding out and my erratic death kicks were doing more damage then his attacks.

I actually know a lot of players who have completely given up on the personal stories and just level up in the zones instead. I'm about ready to take that path because of the constant bugginess of them. When faced with a challenge like the Sewer I'll have to level past it, get better gear, and then attempt it again when I'm strong enough to solo it without my companion.

And yeah, the dual axes are awesome. I was using those for the first 30ish levels of the game before switching to the Greatsword. I like the kiting ability the greatsword gives you. Slow them with the sword throw then spin past them so that you hit them and put distance on them. Makes soloing the skill challenge bosses much easier. Unless they have ranged attacks. Then your screwed.

Finally unlocked another ship on FTL the other night, the Rockman ship - though I was hoping for the Mantis ship since its Type-B hull has a 4-man teleporter. This weekend I've been playinf UFO: Aftermath to get me in the mood for XCOM: Enemy Unknown which comes out in a few weeks. Have to say considering its a bit of a poor rip off of XCOM, its still a great game.

I'm really looking forward to the tech progression and how it affects combat as the game moves forward. Kinda like the fighting between Germany and Russia during WW2, it will likely be like the original in that the tide of battle wont so much as turn but even out to a fegree as you harness the power of recovered tech and your squad gains experience, stats and abilities.

More Borderlands 2, but I have to say I am getting burned out on it really fast. With zero reason to start additional characters (because they are all the same with a different special ability) and constantly having to upgrade my gear so that I don't waste half my ammo killing things, and how no matter what my gear is I die if exposed for three seconds.

The game would be more fun if I had other people to play with, but I don't.

Also the time challenge quests are f'ing retarded.

I have the Metal Gear Solid HD Collection to look forward to.

I need 3 more Chapters in Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary.

Oh and I still haven't played Skyrim...(But since Bethesda should have now fixed most of the bugs and released most of the expansions I can now enjoy the full package)

I can probably justify one new computer game type purchase this month, but I have absolutely no idea what to get.

After experiencing it vicariously through Charley, I'm tempted to get XCOM... though I know a few of you guys are enjoying Dishonored. I also don't own any of the Fallout New Vegas, Skyrim, or Mass Effect 3 DLCs, and - much to everyone at Nerd's dismay and amazement - I have yet to play Portal 2. Of course, there's also Castle Crashers... though I think most of you guys play that on xbox? There were a few LEGO games I think, though I've totally lost track with those, and I'm sure there's a bunch of other games that I've missed this year as well... I have ME3, Torchlight, and GW2 this year, and that's pretty much it (I think).

If you were to recommend just one game from the last 10 months, which one would it be?

Dasquian Belargic
Nov 6th, 2012, 06:22:00 PM
In terms of the amount of hours playtime you'll get for your money, I'd recommend Skyrim or New Vegas. They have a lot of replay value, whereas the others you mentioned that I've played (Portal 2, Dishonored, ME DLCs, LEGO stuff and Castle Crashers) are either games with limited single player campaigns that don't have a huge amount of unique replay (Portal 2, Dishonored), or party games (like Castle Crashers).

You could always wait for the Steam Christmas Sales and see what gets a big discount :)

I'll certainly be doing some Christmas sale shopping... I'm just really craving some new gameage. :uhoh

How much extra stuff is there in the downloadable content for New Vegas and Skyrim? Is it like Mass Effect where I'll get a few extra hours and then have to repeat the main game to get any replayability out of it, or are we talking about enough stuff to keep me occupied for days/weeks?

Dasquian Belargic

You can get hundreds of hours out of both games, without downloading any DLC. New Vegas has a bunch of big DLCs however that are all worth what you pay for them, in terms of originality and the amount of time you'll spend on them. Single playthroughs can basically go on forever in Skyrim.

Crusader

I have logged 160hours on New Vegas including all the DLC. If you buy New Vegas go straight for the GOTY.

I kind of regret having bought Skyrim in America since now I have to buy the DLC extra while on the other hand the GOTY should arrive early next year.

There is an Assassins Creed Collection coming out later this year. This means 15-30 hours times 5 of gameplay plus all the DLC so far.

If you had an Xbox this would be easier... get Red Dead Redemption or start playing Halo games with your pal Peter.

I'm aware of that - I already own the vanilla versions of New Vegas and Skyrim. That's why I was specifically asking about the amount of gameplay you get out of the DLCs. ;)

Why limit it to the last 10 months? have you played every game that came out prior to February?

If I had to recommend one game since forever, it would be System Shock 2.It's survival horror without being awkward to play, its cyberpunk which is a default win, it's the reason Bioshock even exists, and it's the reason I'm terrified of chimpanzees and protocol droids.

Another strong one would be Diablo 2 - plenty of replayability with three difficulties and 5 character classes (7 with the expansion) and with max level being 99 you'll end up a force to be reckoned with by the end of it.

But if its recent you want, Dark Souls (with a gamepad such as an XBOX controller!) is fantastically challenging. Or check out The War Z which I'm playing at the moment. It's an online open-world zombie survival game. I could use some friends to help scavenge.

We'll see what happens if and when the DWP approves my disability benefits. If I get it, they'll back-date until when I put in my claim (June), so I might be able to scrabble together enough for an xbox and a few games.

After watching Forward Unto Dawn, Halo is definitely on my list. I was thinking of starting with Halo: ODST - I've played a little of it before, and I found the whole narrative concept interesting. Is that an okay point to get into the franchise (if I enjoy it, I'll probably then go back and play through from the beginning), or do I need to start from square one to get the most out of the story?

I figured "in the last ten months" was an easier question for people to answer than "in the history of time". ;)

I'm not normally a fan of zombie / horror type games (or films), truth be told. I'm not scared or put off by gore... it's just never been something that has particularly appealed. Well I think playing it in a chronological order would be best.

Halo Reach
Halo 1 Anniversary Edition
Halo 2 Mission 1-2
Halo ODST
Halo 2 "Finish the Fight!"
Halo 3 really "Finish the Fight!"
Halo 4

Starting with Halo Reach and then going back to Halo might be a terrible idea from a gameplay perspective since you get all those cool armor abilities and then you go back to the FPS stone age. But Halo Reach offers lots of background and gives you a REAL reason to fight and it connects seamless with Halo 1.

Halo 2 introduces nearly all the gameplay mechanics that made Halo what it is.

HALO ODST is a great standalone title but if you really want to fully appreciate it you have to play the battle of Mombasa from the Chief's perspective first.

Halo 3 is like the Return of the King for Halo a lot of large set pieces and eye candy but it lacks the narrative twist of Halo 1 and 2. But the ending is still epic (the full legendary extended ending that is).

Halo 4 gets a lot of praise from the press and it seems to be almost like a reboot by giving more details on the Chief's and Cortana's past while on the other hand moving the story forward into a new chapter.

I've been playing Halo 4. I jumped straight into the campaign and played through it solo on Legendary. It took my three days for a total of 8 hours of play. Holy moly it was hard. Everyone else I know who's tackled Legendary did it with at least one other player and they claimed it was a breeze and a disappointment. I had a lot of fun with the challenge of doing it on my own but I will admit there are some moments, like the survive and nearly endless wave moments, that the game because incredibly unfair in it's difficulty.

I had a blast. Now I'm tackling the multiplayer. Played a few Spartan Ops already but they were hardly challenging. Just four random players running through and destroying everything. I dunno if Legendary turned me into some kind of killing machine but I easily beat all the other players for kills. Just feels like a bunch of people running around randomly shooting stuff. Not really that thrilling. I would assume it would be a lot more fun with a premade group.

A complaint I read in a review I have to mirror is that the unlocking system is really, really long. I haven't played much. Only like rank 5 I think. Just seems like you really have to stretch out there for awhile before you start unlocking things.

All in all I'm very impressed with this first entry into the new trilogy and I can't wait to see what 343 puts out next.

Only eight hours? Is that a fairly typical runtime for a Halo game, or was Halo 4 particularly quick? I haven't really done a full-on FPS game in over a decade, so I'm a bit out of touch with how long these things usually last.

Crusader
Nov 8th, 2012, 05:03:00 PM
Nope that's normal but the fact that Halo is more a sandbox shooter it is always fun to revisit levels. The difficulty levels differ a lot more than in other games. Easy is ridiculous, Normal is a walk in the park, Heroic is really tough but Legendary is a monument for all your sins.

Plus the games achievements work as secondery objectives for the campaign and are always funny to do.

Depends really. System Shock 2 isn't a straightforward zombie game. The most common enemy, the hybrids, are like zombies in their looks and behaviour, but in the context of the games setting they're so much better than that! It's sci-fi survival horror and I cannot recommend it enough.

As for the traditional undead zombie, Resident Evil 2 and 4 are my favourites of the series, and Dead Rising 2 is a lot of fun, giving you an entire casino resort full of zombies to plow through and missionsto complete. There are casinos, hotels, food courts as well as various rooftops, shopping areas and maintenence halls/underground access tunnels to explore. You combine items into weapons such as boxing gloves and knives into wolverine claws, or a teddy bear and a machine gun into an auto-tracking cuddly turret of zombie death.

There's also the Doom series!

While it may have only been eight hours I can tell you that it felt like an eternity. When you are replaying the same sequence for the 12th time trying to nail down the perfect approach to the situation it feels like you've been there all day. On Legendary, the hardest setting, a single mistake means your dead and starting over.

My brief foray into the competitive multiplayer, dubbed War Games, has been exactly what I predicted. I am a god crushing little man shaped sacks of goo. Unfortunately my teammates are also man shaped sacks of goo. I very much doubt there is any kind of matchmaking system to separate the good players and bad players. Which is disheartening when you get a super noob on your team.

All in all, this is what I shall be playing for awhile now. I don't intend on getting Black Ops II. Still playing League of Legends on the side too. I have to get my MOBA fix :P

I've been playing FTL today... and honestly, I'm a little disappointed.

The gameplay is great, but the game is too random for my tastes: there's too much luck involved. For example, I had a playthrough where none of the stores had any offensive weapons. I fought all the way to the final sector searching, but by the time I reached the final showdown with the Rebel flagship, I had just enough power to take down the shields if all my shots hit, but I couldn't do any additional damage after that. It wasn't a strategy failure on my part: it was just "bad luck" with where items were spawned and sold.

The fact that the game is so random, and the fact that it's one of these "if you die, start over" games is stopping me from enjoying it as much as I potentially should. You can't plan to get specific weapons, specific crewmembers, or anything like that. FTL would be an absolutely fantastic strategy game if you could actually win it using strategy... but right now it seems that the only way to succeed is to rely pretty heavily on fluke, and that's not really fun for me.

It's a real shame, because like I say the gameplay is great. If the starting options were a bit more flexible, or if I knew that I could replay the game (or play another level / mission / whatever) with the same ship and crew, it'd probably appeal more. Right now though, I'm having to put in too much effort to justify the amount of fun that I'm getting out. :(

After attempting the Mechwarrior Online beta, which felt terrible and I will never go back, Hawken is a breath of fresh mech air. It's your typical free to play game with the expected In-Game currency grind and leveling.

More Skyrim. Looks like my Glen save may be lost to the aether: I logged off with him mounted on a horse, and the game doesn't seem to want to load that particular save.

I started a new character (to check if it was the save that was corrupt, or the entire game), and have started running around as Fred Fiddich. Trying out the archery / light armour / stealth route, which isn't something I've done before... and I'm amazed at how unspeakably badass I seem to be already.

I'm tempted to go magic mainly for my next playthrough. My first playthrough I did that thar....except I played as a huge half-orc instead of a dedicated sneak/archery class. Which was pretty funny to see a huge guy wandering around in a full dwarven set taking distance shots while a scrawny little female in elven armor and shield/sword went melee up close.

My Glen Fiddich playthrough focuses mainly on the stuff you're thinking of, Peter - I've got a shield/axe combo, heavy armour, and I'm smithing my own stuff. I'm only at level 12 thus far, but I'm not noticing any disadvantages (so far) compared to other playthroughs. I can still shield bash > one shot dragons and such.

Haven't really done much (well, any) alchemy before though. Don't think I've even looked at what's on the alchemy tree, for that matter. :uhoh

I love the poisons. Pure win is this:

Imp Stool
Human Flesh
Orange Dartwing, Slaughterfish Egg or Slaughterfish Scales

Takes a chunk of health off, puts a DoT on them, AND paralyses them! Also sells for a helluva lot of gold. Once you know how to make potions with three or four effects, you can sell them for buckets of cash, then buy out the alchemists stock, make more super potions and sell them right back to reclaim all your gold, then head to the next town with an alchemist and repeat. Its a sick way of levelling alchemy and making dosh!

I managed to fix my Glen save (stupid horse)... but at the moment, I'm having way more fun playing his sneakier, thiefier, archerier little brother.

I've never gone the thief route in Skyrim before - I don't even know how to fence the stuff I keep stealing; that's how nooby I am - but I am having a ton of fun being all snipery and stuff. I just installed Dawnguard, so I'll be playing around with crossbows pretty soon. I'm also having far too much fun killing people in the night as soon as they cease to be useful to me - I think there's only four or five people left alive in Riverwood at the moment.

I haven't worked out my "plan" for levelling up as yet. Archery/Light/Sneak is obviously gonna be in the mix there, but I keep forgetting to use potions and things, so I may focus more on upping my breaking and entering skills or somesuch.

Also, I have no idea how this whole build your own house dealio is meant to work. :uhoh

Have you got the Heathfire DLC installed? If so, a courier should run up to you and offer you the chance to buy a plot of land as long as you've... done a few quests, maybe?, for one of the Jarls. I think that's how it started for me anyway. From that point, once you get to your plot of land, there are work benches and such that explain it for you.

Fencing stuff is probably easiest to do at the Thieves Guild in Riften. If you haven't been there already, you should tiptoe your way over!

So I've just got a message from EA saying I can pick my free game as a thank you slash apology for the whole disasterous SimCity launch thing. The choices are...

Battlefield 3
Mass Effect 3
SimCity 4 Deluxe Edition
Need For Speed: Most Wanted
Bejeweled 3
Medal of Honor: Warfighter
Dead Space 3
Plants VS Zombies

I have SimCity 4 Deluxe already, I don't like Racing games, won't bother with P vs Z or Bejeweled 3 and MoH... mneh!

So it's pretty much either Battlefield 3, Mass Effect 3 or Dead Space 3. But I dunno which one to go for. None of them are on Steam. TBH my temptation is to go for Mass Effect 3 and then - being a complete Mass Virgin - play the three of them back to back and maybe even record my playthrough for my Youtube channel which I'm currently mulling over games for new content. That'd pretty much occupy my "Sci-Fi" slot for quite some time.

Thoughts?

This is a fantastic idea. If Mass Effect is a bug that bites you, playing through the game in one wave is an inevitability at this point. It's really easy to get invested in your character, and it's really rewarding to see your choices make an actual difference as the story progresses.

I actually have a spare copy of ME and ME2 sitting in my Steam at the moment - picked them up when they were super-cheap in one of the sales as an emergency "Whaaaat, you've never played Mass Effect?!" thing, which I can ping across if you'd like. You may want to pick up some of the ME2 downloadable content as well, particularly if you're going to Youtube it: Lair of the Shadow Broker and Arrival in particular add nicely to the narrative, which will work well with a Let's Play.

Also... Minecraft. We need to actually pick a day and do that.

I'm probably gonna go with Mass Effect 3 since online shooters aren't really my thing. I've had fun playing the Modern Warfares but only with friends via teamspeak and I'm not very competitive.

Jace, thanks for the offer but I already have Mass Effect 1 and 2 on Steam - I know, it's a crime I still haven't played them.

At the moment I'm wanting to do Let's Plays of different games, releasing specific ones on specific days, such as Minecraft Monday. Right now I've got an itch to do Minecraft, Stalker, Vampire: Bloodlines and Deus Ex Lets Plays. Mass Effect could be a good addition.

I made the mistake of playing the Feed The Beast modpack for Minecraft today.

I haven't played it in ages, so as one might suspect a whole heap of changes have been made. Specifically, GregTech has screwed around with even more crafting recipes than last time I played: it now costs diamonds to make a macerator... and macerators are the only thing that will turn coal into coal dust. Which means you now need diamonds to make industrial diamonds. And you need diamonds for everything in that damned modpack, which means it takes ten times longer to get started with anything than it used to.

GregTech. :shakefist

Peter McCoy
Mar 25th, 2013, 10:50:50 AM
I think that balances it out better. You should need to acquire the actual item before you are able to use a mass production method of acquisition.

However macerators also let you double your ore production so it's a bummer that you now need diamonds before accessing that functionality of the modpack.

I played several hours into a Knight when I first got the game. Looking back though I feel like I did a lot of things out of order and skipped a few things. I ended up down in the dungeon with the Giant Rat and got cursed (meaning I have half life permanently unless I cure it) and because of the health reduction I can't seem to escape the damn place and that's why I gave up the first time.

Yesterday I rolled a new character, the Bandit, so I could make a focus stat character instead of a hybrid. Bandit is pure strength as opposed to my knight who was a hybrid of str and dex. I feel like I shop through enemies a lot faster but the lack of durability is noticeable. Thankfully Bandits use a shield or I'd kill myself. I made it as far as the Black Knight in the single playthrough. Definitely going a lot easier than the first time I played as I am remembering a lot of the traps and ambushes. Currently farming souls because I forgot to save them to buy the Repair box thing and the key from the first shopkeeper.

Playing it this time I'm no longer in that state of awe and wonder that I inhabited the first time around. Back when the game was legendary and inscrutable. Now I'm discovering this game really, really sucks. Not on a gameplay or story level, but the controls are really bad, clumsy, and the game (playing xbox360 version) has some terrible framerate drops especially while dodge rolling and fighting bosses. I didn't notice these the last time I played, or just accepted them, but now it's really making the game diminish in value because I feel like everything should be a lot tighter and smoother for a game of this type.

Hopefully Dark Souls II will improve on that level. Otherwise it's a phenomenal game. Also, I pretty much have to play with a guide because I otherwise miss the cleverly hidden things or cannot beat a boss. The idea of actually losing my souls terrifies me.

The Gargoyles on top of the church weren't that hard when I played on my Knight. I died maybe five times, but eventually I got it under control. I felt the rooftop was forgiving enough that it made it easy to recover your souls as the fight commenced. I never even fought the Fire Dragon; hence my feeling that I missed things. I did get the Dragon Sword, which if you missed that gem I can't even imagine how hard the game must be. It has a huge str requirement, but it's the best weapon for a huge chunk of the game.

Peter McCoy
Apr 15th, 2013, 05:46:29 PM
It really depends on your stats focus and play-style as to which weapons are strongest. Concentrating on Dexterity, I find the Uchigatana is pure win. It strikes so fast that even basic enemies don't have time to hit me, nevermind stronger, slower foes.

Kyle Krogen
Apr 16th, 2013, 03:15:48 PM
I haven't played a Dexterity max character. My first roll was a Rogue, or whatever the thief class is, and I didn't get very far before I started getting my face wiped off and rerolled as the Knight. I have a problem in that I kind of just sit in areas and farm them for souls for longer than I should. I so scared to leave my comfort zones.

Peter McCoy
Apr 17th, 2013, 08:25:04 AM
The Pyromancer is my favourite starting class since he has the lowest starting Soul Level, meaning you get the most customization. Plus he starts out with the ability to hurl fireballs which makes boss fights a lot easier. And he's pretty good with melee combat as well since his starting stats lend well to Strength-baeed weapons. But I like to pump up his Dexterity to use those kind of weapons, like the Uchigatana.

I'm the same when it comes to soul-farming. But the Undead Burg and the chapel area are decent areas to farm. Mainly because the next major area is Blight Town and the enemies there are nasty as fuck - most of them end up poisoning you, plus there's this horrible thick mud you have to traverse often and the longer you stand in it, the more at risk of getting poisoned you are. It's a biatch of an area. But you need to go there to kill the Spider boss to ring the second Bell of Awakening. And further down you come across what I can only describe as Hell itself - a very awesome-looking but dangerous area - the Taurus Demon is a common enemy down there!

I've really been getting into Kerbal Space Program this last week!

It's a space program simulator that allows you to construct various flying machines from rockets to spaceplanes. Picking things like command capsules, fuel tanks, engines, RCS thrusters, decouplers and all kinds of other components, you assemble your rocket in as many stages as you like and can control how the various stages separate, ie the order in which things happen during launch and in-flight. Like having two bhoosters on the side of your main stage and having them detach once their fuel is spent to lighten the load as you continue your ascent.

Once you're high enough you can change trajectory to get into orbit around the planet Kerbin. But once you're there, you've got TONNES more stuff to do. The planet Kerbin has two moons as well as being part of a planetary system of several planets. And you can try to encounter, orbit and land on all of them.

The different celestial bodies have different gravity and atmosphere, as well as different orbits around the star at the heart of the system. As such, each present a unique challenge in designing a rocket capable of getting you there and carrying out the mission itself.

Like NASA, you have to plan your flight so that your orbit will carry you to the point where your target planet or moon will be so tyhat you get there at the same time, then its a case of killing your speed with a retrograde fuel burn to get into an orbit and maybe even land. But did you bring enough fuel and a parachute to return home and get your brave astronauts back down to Kerbin safely.

Anybody who's a space nut should check this out. It's not got lasers or aliens or huge space battles, but it does have plenty of explisions when your creation fails to clear the launch tower, and despite its geeky nature it's very exciting and tense when you're approaching the Mun and start your retrograde burn with your fingers crossed you don't overshoot and send your men off into empty space.

Started a new Fallout: New Vegas playthrough. I'm keeping with my sort-of tradition of playing Glen in games like this... except I suck at melee in Fallout, so I'm playing "Glen with guns", who is basically Jayne.

I'm limiting myself to only using weapons where Glen would easily be able to tell the ammo apart. Right now the "thin bullets" (5.56mm) go in the service rifle, while the "fat bullets" (9mm) go in the pistol and SMG. I'm still super early on though... I may have to rethink that once I start getting sniper rifles, marksman carbines and LMGs and such.

I don't usually bother with shotguns in, well, pretty much any game to be honest, but they seem like a very Glen thing to use. May have a play around and see if I can work out what the dealio is with them... though honestly, I'll probably just end up missing and dying all the time. That's what usually happens when I try to use shotguns. :uhoh

I'm iffy on that sort of modding. I'll probably save mods for my next playthrough to spice things up when I try to grab the rest of the achievements.

Fallout is screwing with my inner completionist though. I know it's impossible to do everything in one go, but I've developed a nervous tick every time I fail a quest because of siding with another faction.

I did every achievement in one go. Just try to finish everything in the game before you kill Matthew Perry. After that you will be able to finish each endgame seperately when you make a savegame there.

I think I've murdered too many NPCs for that to work out I think. Killing fake Romans is too much fun. :uhoh

Screwing around on a new Skyrim playthrough as Jens Fiddich. Just sorted out Sven's love life in Riverwood. Stupid nancy boy big brother. :grumble

No you get a pardon from Cesar after taking out Benny.

I got a pardon from Caesar, but before I killed Benny. Even with that, I was still getting attacked by the Legion. After getting the pardon I quick travelled to the Legion Raid Camp and was instantly shot at. Boone was with me, so I don't know if that's why - had a similar issue with Cass and the Van Graff family, who started getting people to shoot me in Freeside despite me picking the "lets let the law deal with this" option. Had to kill them all for being annoying.

I've been playing ACIII and GTAIV which I'd previously bought as part of packages. Mostly getting into the ACIII storyline now. Controls are a little hard to figure out, I kind of wished they made the ESC Menu a little less fancy.

Since ATT had their heads up their butts last sunday and couldn't fix the net in a timely fashion, I played some Skyrim. Mostly now it's just cleaning up a lot of random ho-hum quests and going through all the crap I have in all of my houses to organize things for enchanting and selling. Also, I adopted another little girl, so now I have two. They brought home a fox, so I let them keep it cause I'm a nice mother ^_^

Still rockin' it with Kharjo too, cause that Khajiit right there is straight up boss.

Next time I fire it up I'll probably pick Dawngaurd back up just so I can finish it. I kind of abandoned it to thunder my way through Dragonborn, heh.

Playing the "Open Beta" Of Neverwinter. It's a pretty fun experience. Kind of like MMORPG-Lite. Being a fan of Dungeons and Dragons I'm greatly enjoying the game but less fanatic players have had issues with it but it's still considered a beta, so it can only improve. The only real downfall is that it has a huge pay-to-win set up in it's free-to-play model. It's a little hard to solo depending on your class, but I've been playing with a few coworkers and it's been an absolute blast to conquer through. Currently sitting at level 20 of 60. Playing the "Guardian" Fighter, because I always play tanks.

I finally finished Dead Island.

The Jungle episode is actually pretty entertaining and in the end you run around with AKs, M16s and Katanas instead of wooden planks and kitchen knifes.

Picked out one of the major titles from last year's Summer Sale to play that I still hadn't gotten around to yet; Civ 5. Having a blast with the turn based game so far.

Civ 5 is a great game! Not my favourite 4X game - that's Alpha Centauri - but a brilliant incarnation of Civilization. I love the Hex-based map and the way you can claim new tiles for your cities as they expand. And the global resources such as oil, coal, aluminium etc really add strategic value to areas more so than in previous games. Whenever I play a Civ game I have to play on a map of Earth!

Played some Halo with Peter last night.

So far I think I've died four times: twice because I'm an xbox noob and accidentally walked backwards off a bridge, and twice because Peter is addicted to throwing grenades EVERYWHERE. :grumble

(Hot damn though, Halo is awesome. :3:)

I used to have that problem back when I played Co-Op with my sister or bother-in-law, except my addiction was rockets, rather than grenades. Many a time I would send one of them or both of us sailing into the wild blue yonder with a mistimed or poorly aimed rocket.

Oh god, with the Steam Summer Sale what haven't I been playing? Before I was mostly playing League of Legends, Warframe, and Skyrim, and now I've added Torchlight II, Rogue Legacy, and Dishonored. My most recent purchase has been Counter-Strike: Global Offensive and I'm enjoying reliving my childhood with updated graphics.

Is Rogue Legacy worth it even though it's only 20% off? I'm finding myself really really wanting to play it but really really not wanting to pay £9.59 for it.

It's alright. It's not really my kind of game; because it's really hard. I've already pushed something like 50 heroes through it and I've barely scratched the surface. Even after a ton of upgrades I still find myself instantly killed by any of the bosses or sub-bosses, so I'm not really getting anywhere with it. Just grinding gold and upgrading my stats. I dunno about monetary value but I've sunk 4 hours into it already and haven't achieved anything.

EDIT: Bought the newly released Mercenary Kings, which is kind of a tribute game to Metal Slug, both in art and gameplay, with weapon/gear crafting elements added in. The game boasts a ridiculously dumb control scheme for the keyboard, because it's apparently been designed to be played on a gamepad. Their only solution is to edit the controls yourself by going into the actual control files. Not too much work but some of the game actions cannot be changed which is really annoying. Regardless I found a control scheme for mostly works and it's been a lot more fun.
