Saw an early screening of Starsa film scheduled for later this year. About guy who just lost his wife (and unborn kid) during childbirth. He's suicidal and is planning on throwing himself off the Rio Grande Gorge bridge on his next birthday.

On the road trip to get there, he has different adventures that make him rethink his decision that life isn't worth living.

Balances comedy and tragedy very well. I recommend it whenever it comes out.

Battleship.

As in the movie "based on the board game".

Surprisingly enjoyable. The plot is pretty simple, but the action scenes are cool, the visual effects are awesome, and there were quite a few bits that genuinely made me laugh. There's one obvious scene that emulates the board game, and it actually ended up being pretty cool rather than a cheese-fest.

Imagine if Michael Bay directed a two-hour big budget recruiting video for the US Navy... that's pretty much what it is.

Third and Fourth tonight. What's interesting is that, between the symphonies, they play a piece by contemporary classical composer Pierre Boulez. Barenboim believed this would provide a stark and refreshing contrast to Beethoven's works, and in that he is so right. It's mental to hear, last night they performed Dérive II, part of which can be heard here (http://youtu.be/afmOHsyBvbo), it's a veritable kaleidoscope of sounds. On Twitter, the BBC provided an excellent feed over the 45 minute course of the piece, helping Boulez laymen like me to unravel the techniques and tones of the music.

Alphas.

Just watched the first couple of episodes. Seems like it's going to be a fairly standard format - a team-based procedural show with weekly character angst like House, CSI, NCIS, Criminal Minds, Bones, etc - but wrapped up in a cool superpowers premise. They've had some interesting practical real-world powers thus far, and the way they're showing the powers through special effects is pretty cool.

Season 1 only has 11 episodes and they've only just started Season 2... worth a look if you fancy something new to watch. :)

Edit:

Also, the theme tune is epic! :ohno

<object width="560" height="315"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/mOYZIX5EjLI?version=3&amp;hl=en_US"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/mOYZIX5EjLI?version=3&amp;hl=en_US" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="560" height="315" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true"></embed></object>

Unfortunately there's no full version of the song; apparently they just wrote 30 seconds specifically to use as the theme. :(

I've watched the first couple of episodes of that; I've got the Deadshot/Deathstroke stuff to look forward to later. Really enjoying it so far, even if it does make me envious of America's ridiculously large ice cream containers!

As expected they've tried to put a little bit of a Batman Begins vibe in there: but they've put a Robin Hood spin on it, which is working so far. They're treading a very fine line: Green Arrow became a vigilante to help people, whereas Batman became a vigilante to hurt criminals (in a nutshell)... I hope they can continue to maintain that difference.

I just started watching 'Once Upon A Time'.

If you haven't watched it yet, give it a go. It's cheesy, and it may not be everyone's cup of tea... but it's warm gooey cheese, with plenty of grin-worthy references and a twisty plot that has done a surprisingly good job of keeping me on the edge of my seat. The story seems simple, but it's unfolding in a really cool and intriguing way. I'm already getting pretty invested in some of the characters too... which, given the episode I just watched, has me a bit sad and angry right now. (You'll know what I mean when you see it :() Robert Carlisle is once again playing a fantastic villain... and I get an excuse to sigh longingly at Jennifer Morrison, which is an added plus.

Also, it took me fifteen minutes to realise that the Jiminy Cricket guy looked and sounded so damned familiar because it was in fact Raphael Sbarge. Damn you for having Kaidan's voice but not his face. :shakefist

November 29, 2012—Netflix Inc. and Warner Bros. International Television Distribution today announced a multi-year licensing agreement allowing Netflix members in the U.K. and Ireland to exclusively enjoy complete previous seasons of some of the hottest series on American television.

The first three seasons of hit teen supernatural drama The Vampire Diaries come to Netflix on December 1, while seasons one through five of saucy young adult favorite Gossip Girl begin on March 1. Later in 2013, four seasons of the J.J. Abrams-created science fiction show Fringe will be available to watch instantly as will all five seasons of Chuck, the beloved hybrid action-comedy, spy-drama that completed its American run in January.

Specifically the Tim Burton one. I'm not normally a Burton fan (I find his films decidedly average, and people's insistence that they're the best thing ever kinda rubs me up the wrong way), but I actually quite enjoyed it. In places it felt a little bit too much about Johnny Depp (but then, what isn't?), and the CGI was a little iffy on a few occasions, but overall it looked great (I especially liked the fact that the Jabberwocky breathed lightning instead of fire), and it actually managed to make some morality points without being too heavy-handed about it.

I guess the number of Tim Burton movies I will willingly watch again has increased to two. (The other is Batman)

Been watching Stargazing Live and the Back to Earth aftershow. I hate that this programme is only on once a year for a few days, but that said, I do love that it's on. :D

Also, the BBC really need to start advertising their programmes better. First of all, I have no idea when Winterwatch is going to air other than sometime in January, and I've only just found out there's an epic new natural history series narrated by David Attenborough: Africa! Had a goosey, and it looks spectacular. Going to catch up on iPlayer tomorrow. :eee

Season 1 of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine. The show had its rough edges, to be sure, but it's clear from the very beginning how the writers are trying to set the show apart from the squeaky-clean mentality of Next Generation. Each character was conceived with central conflicts in mind, and the first handful of episodes express those conflicts in their purest form - Sisko balancing his duties with his efforts to raise a son, O'Brien struggling to maintain a station that constantly breaks down, Kira's simmering resentment of the station's new Federation overseers, Odo's zealous commitment to his own concept of justice, his delightful sparring with Quark. To some extent, all those storylines ended up smoothing over as the series progressed and new conflicts were introduced, so it's refreshing to see how sharp and clear they were at the outset.

I'm not mind blown, but there are interesting parts to it and smart takes on how to throw people into the action in the pilot. I love some of the characters (I'm a sucker for any kind of father type characters), but in the post invasion/apocalypse, I prefer Jericho so far, even though the premise isn't the same.

Lilaena De'Ville
Apr 18th, 2013, 11:31:28 AM
Falling Skies is not great, but it's a watchable summer sci-fi show. It is similar to Jericho in that there is a strong focus on family, and while I found FS to be a bit predictable (and some of the CGi [ok a lot of it] is laughably bad) it's inoffensive at worst and entertaining at best.

If you like yelling at your screen when characters make boneheaded decisions then it's definitely the show for you. :lol

Watching last night's Survivor was AWESOME. Best tribal council in like, ever. There were high fives being gleefully exchanged between Ty and I and we had to discuss it for a long time afterward, that's how great it was. Usually we just talk about it for like five minutes after the episode, but we had an in depth strategy and how-will-this-fall-out conversation and I bet no one here watches Survivor but if you were a fan at some point and simply aren't watching anymore you should watch last season (great one) and this one (shaping up to be EVEN BETTER).

Seriously it was so good.

Tonight's episode? Wow. Well played... I did not see that coming, and I see most things coming when I watch a TV show.

Supernatural: Season 2, Episode 14.

I do enjoy the random decor of the shady places the Winchesters check into: this time it's pokeballs and fish.

[Also this story of retracing Sam's steps is very unnerving.]

If we do not stay in at least one motel with dodgy decor and/or a mirror on the ceiling during the road trip, I will be disappoint.

The best part of the motels is how they're all obviously the same set, just dressed differently.

Unfortunately I've never seen a motel like a Supernatural motel before. They never seem to stay at a Super 8, Best Western, or even a Motel 6.
