I want to do some fleeting for the Rebellion, so I was wondering if I could get hooked up for a scenario/test.

Sure, What do you have in mind?

hopefully not something too lopsided. Maybe a couple of Assault frigates, a couple X-Wing squadrons, and a DP20 against a small imperial fleet?

A Recon type mission might be best to start with. Say a single ship running into trouble on a patrol on the edge of the Atrivis sector. As far as ships its up to you what you want to use. An imperial group would be worked out acording to what you want to use as your ship. I started out with one ship and most people I have helped get started had one ship. Its just easier to work with. That being said you can have what you like as long as it fits into mission profile and makes sense. Like No battle line of 6 cruisers or anything.

maybe an assault frigate and a fighter squadron?

It would have to be Modified with a hanger big enough for 12 fighters. An upgunned Dread would be the same thing. just not as fast.

Assault Frigates and Starfighter squadrons make a good combo for hit and fade missions against strong Imperial targets. These missions are something you could graduate up to after doing response/recon missions. Commerce interdiction and convoy raiding aren't really suitable, since you'd need prize crews to take possession of the ships. Nebulon-B Frigates, Light Mon Calamari Cruisers would be more suitable for the latter.

I think I could work with an upgunned dread and the X-wings.

A Gladiator Cruiser (http://starwars.wikia.com/wiki/Gladiator-class_Star_Destroyer)and 2 Carracks (http://starwars.wikia.com/wiki/Carrack-class_light_cruiser).
That will be 12 Tie Interceptors and 24 Tie Fighters. That makes you out numbered in the fighter department.

3 to 1 isn't outnumbered:) I think I could do that. Those carracks are pretty tough.

thanks. It's good to know what you're commanding, seeing as I have no prior experience with dreadnaughts.

Thing to remember about Dreads is They are tough and can stay in a fight for a long time. They just did not have enough Ship to Ship weapons. That's why the ungrade. You Modded Dread Can hang with just about anything smaller than A Victory Star Destroyer. Well maybe a munificent would give it troubles but not much else close to it in size.

An unmodified Dreadnought's main problem apart from outdated weaponry would be speed and manueverability. Y-wings and other starfighters took advantage of this during the Battle of Nar Shadda to destroy at least one Imperial Dreadnought. Two Fighter Squadrons would really be the minimal screen for a capital ship like this.
