I very recently joined and after reading the FAQ's, I am still confused. I have a few questions that hopefully get answered
1. Is this just free-writing rp or is there a particular storyline?
2. What does "Invaled File" mean for Avatar Uploads?
3. What is rep?
4. What do I get by joining a group (Empire for ex)

Hello and welcome to the boards. I am one of the moderators here on the Imperial forums (or at least one or two of my accounts are...I forget which). Feel free to ask about here and we will do our best to help you out.
I very recently joined and after reading the FAQ's, I am still confused. I have a few questions that hopefully get answered
1. Is this just free-writing rp or is there a particular storyline?
Both. Currently the galactic setting for our universe is about 5-7 years after the Battle of Endor where both the Alliance and Imperials took heavy losses (and most/all of the cannon characters were killed off.......IP Infringement, copywrite, and all that jazz).
Though many people to flash-back/flash-forward threads and such. You are definitely free to join or start any open RPs and can talk with others around if you want to start/get involved in specific storylines.
A lot of them intertwine and are convoluted as heck, but feel free to ask. We also have a wiki (might not be up to date) on various RPs, characters, and storylines found here:
http://www.sw-fans.net/wiki/index.php?title=Main_Page
2. What does "Invaled File" mean for Avatar Uploads?
Quite possible that the file type isn't recognized by the boards (a few do that), the file size is too large, or perhaps the directory path on your computer is somehow corrupted/invalid.
Check out the FAQ linked on the toolbar at the top of the page about acceptable file types and sizes.
3. What is rep?p
Just a way to give props the threads and posts. It has no effect on the boards.
4. What do I get by joining a group (Empire for ex)
Well the Empire has cake! I don't know what those heathen rebels and jedi are offering, but whatever it is we can offer better.
On a more serious note it gives you a way to round out and define your character, opens avenues to RP and character interaction etc.
Often many of the factions also have restricted forums that only members of the faction can view or post in. For example the Empire has a restricted forum with a few other subforums in it.
Many of us have multiple characters (some of the crazy people have dozens) in multiple factions so there really is no "faction warfare" that goes on here. We're all pretty open and friendly.
I can talk you through how to request access to the restricted forums and grant you access in a bit.
Any other questions/concerns/comments?

Something ivolving space combat or pretty much anything Imperial-related.
Thanks all for helping me out. This looked really confusing at first but it's a little clearer now.:)

Space Combat seems to be fighter based these days. I have lots of pretty Ships and nothing to do with them. As you have a Tie pilot as your avatar It seems that's fits. Rouge Squadron would be the best for space combat. I am not sure how active Shadow Squadron is for the Imps. I'm sure it is more active than I am ... Fleet Combat Is dead :( Reshmar May retire and open a pizza shop.

thought about having another who is an ISD commander but apparently that's not a wise idea. Is Shadow Squadron TIE Phantoms? I saw something that mentioned TIE Defenders, but "Shadow" is more fitting for a TIE with a cloak. I can use this character as either a TIE Defender or TIE Phantom Pilot, so that's good. The only difference is I added a seismic missile to my TIE phantom.

The Shadows pilot Defenders at the moment but they tend to fly whatever we want them to.
Having an ISD commander would be fun, then Reshmar would have someone to play with and can put off opening his Calamari Pizza shop. ;)

unfortunately, TIE Phantoms cost 473,062 Credits. IF there is a TIE Phantom squadron out there, it ought to be called Ghost Squadron "Now you see them , now you don't"
I take it Reshmar commands Rebel cruisers? That would be interesting. If I could switch people in an rp I might be able to work something out...

Oh ho! A fleeter, eh? It's been a while since we've had any large scale engagements with capital ships.
Reshmar and I have duked it out several times in the past from the bridges of our fleets. Not many of the old fleet RPers around, but I can dust off Admiral Balades and bring the 4th Response Squadron back into the fray.
Captain Zeera could use some small-scale skirmishes as well with the 1st Black Fleet.
I do also have an Alliance captain with a rag-tag band that I really haven't done anything with.

For the most part, the stuff we do isn't straight PvP. We do a lot of story stuff, and if it does come to that, we operate with enough respect to the players OOC to be pretty open when it's called for to coordinate things.

Yup, the thread Reshmar linked is from the restricted forums.
Wow, I've been reading over the archived fleet battles we've had pre-reset. The forums used to be set 50-60 years after the Battle of Endor with the New Republic the dominant force and the Empire split into four factions (Federacy, Sovereignty, Balmorran Empire, and the Remnant).
I think the biggest set of fights we had was when the Imperial Sovereignty attacked the New Repulbic at the planet Teyr which lead to a long war and a lot of several-hundred post long space/ground battle threads.
The largest battles occurred at Bestine (three separate battles as the Sovereignty captured the planet as a staging ground for a full-scale war against the New Republic).
At the height of fighting the Sovereignty had well over forty warships on site including two full destroyer squadrons (8 Star Destroyers of various classes) and Grand Admiral Desaria's Super Star Destroyer.
I'll say this about fleet battles, we usually try to stay on the smaller side (maybe one or two command ships with support vessels) and decide battle before hand, but we wanted that fight I mentioned above to be thoroughly epic.
Battles that aren't pre-decided are more like a game of chess with the common sense rule being key (it really takes several threads of writing to get used to). If both parties aren't careful it can devolved into a huge hissy fit with both sides doing ever more stupid, illogical, and grandoise things that would never happen in an actual fight.
I'll give you this advice as it was drilled into me since the first fleet RP I took part in:
A well-written, plot-filled, and detailed defeat is infinitely better than a sloppy, rushed, and unbelievable victory
If you know you have been bested, take the defeat with pride and make a damn good story out of it. Space battles are pointless without character and feeling.
As an example, I have never once "won" an engagement against Lion'el Johnson when he RP'd here. The guys was that good as a commander. And I enjoyed putting as much emotion and character as I could into those defeats.
Here is a great example on how to write a defeat (props to Reshmar and Redic). I give you the First Battle of Bestine:
Holy crap, though, I can't believe how bad I was at writing back then. :lol
http://sw-fans.net/archive/forum/showthread.php?threadid=34445&highlight=Bestine
Here is a more recent fleet engagement that is more typical of what we do and also includes some great character development.
http://sw-fans.net/forum/showthread.php?t=15961&highlight=Deadfall
And probably my favorite fleet/ship thread written by Telan Desaria while he was around. This is how the pros do it, ladies and gentlemen.

Bestine was Great! even when it slowed down and took a week to get a post it was worth it. But we planned for months for that... lol
I miss Telan... He soundly whipped me at Kashyyk... He taught me so much when I first started here. I miss Lion'el and the rest of that bunch. We talked Starships for hours...lol. Redic and I talk, he is in med school and has no time to write but I'm sure once he gets where he can I will drag him back kicking and screaming.
I don't know if I will ever pull anything like Bestine off again. That was a whole lot of planning, argueing, great writing, and good people.

Well considering we also had after-math threads, political threads with the Senate and Sov government, side-threads, had 20+ people involved in the storyline, and somehow trying to balance a battles across multiple theaters with dozens of vessels, personnel, and hundreds of thousands of ground troops.....I think we did well with that chaos.

Same. Jarek T'chort as well. I regret not having been able to meet those two in person like I have a lot of the people on this site for years.

Ha! I think we're on an even footing now after you guys thrashed Malice and damn near crippled Feanor in the second battle of Bestine.
I miss RPing the 4th Response Squadron. When we did the reset I had to at least bring the Feanor along. That ship did me really well.
A re-match is in order at some point!

Cripes yes. Multiple 500 post long threads just for planning and arguing. Totally worth it, though as most of the forums were involved.

I hate being on the wrong end of An Aurora..... My first command with the SOV was The Aurora Star Destroyer Termagant. I tested the Weapons systems for the first one. Best Ship Telan ever designed in my opinion.
I'm cooking up an Idea for something soon. Now that I have the time to write again. There are a lot of story archs playing out right now so It would be a small skirmish. I just need to work out a plan and see if anyone wants to jump in.

I'd prefer some more batteries on the things. Loading the torpedo octets takes longer than a battle. Once you use them all, the Aurora is giant brick in space.
Granted if you actually need to use all the torps then you've done something wrong and/or should probably get the hell out of dodge.

Wow I just scanned thru all the old Bestine Threads.... That was amazing. 4 IC threads 3 OOC threads... Bestine was popular it seemed. I even went back to my first post here... lol My first ship. The Mon Orishma was a good ship. Till it took half the torps of an Aurora.
Im sure it will be at least till then before I have everything worked out. I have to do a couple Threads about Reshmar getting back from looking for Lion EL' Johnson fleet.
I have an idea for a larger thread if anyone wants in. 3rd Fleet has plans to hit Bilbringi...
But that would take planning and people to get going.
For now Im thinking Small Patrol group sized Skirmishes.

As a note, on the forums we usually have have an evaluative period before giving a character an official rank and command. Just gives the rest of us a chance to see how a new fleeter to the forums writes, acts, and reacts.
We had a standard scenario we ran in the past for Imperial fleeters, but it was rather one-dimensional and flawed (IMO). I'll get you a scenario/mission laid out in a bit.
I'm still scrambling for finals/final projects so I'll get to it when I'm sick and tired of working on projects for the night.

New real defined goals, too open-ended (hard to evaluate when there are no criteria), and it really leaves the trainee more confused than it's worth at the moment.
I just got back to my house (3am) after being in the lab since 8am yesterday so I'm going to pass out now. The next week or so will probably be pretty similar so I won't get much chance to help out.
Reshmar is willing to set an RP up with you, he's one of the best fleeters here and it's always a pleasure learning from him. I think bout-for-bout we're about tied on the win-loss when facing each other, he almost trashed my command ship, the Feanor (an Aurora-class Star Destroyer), several times back in the day.
