For anyone who isn't watching the Geek & Sundry Youtube channel already, Table Top is Wil Wheaton's show in which he plays table top games with people you will probably recognise from TV! Here's the first 2 episodes:

I watched half of the first one when it came out - I need to get back and watch it. Also, I need people to play games with.

At the risk of opening a can of worms...

How does 40k actually work? I always thought it was just.. model painting!

I think it's like chess crossed with D&D.

With model painting. ;) Best paint jobs get the most points? :D

...I don't know either, :lol

Gamer here. Board games of any sort really: Settlers of Catan, Arkham Horror, Kingsburg, etc. Pretty much anything.

I also play 40k, Warmachine/Hordes, and Flames of War.

Heheh, a big part of it yeah. Overall concept is pretty simple, though the rules can get a bit convoluted.

The models represent squads/units in the army with their own stat lines (weapons skill, ballistic skill, strength, toughness, wounds, etc, etc) and cost a certain number of points depending on their abilities. For a given game you set a maximum point limit with whomever you're playing and build up a force with certain restrictions on units depending on their type (HQ, Troops, Elites, Fast Attack, Heavy Support).

Games are played on a 6' by 4' table with randomly determined missions (or chosen by the players). Each model can move a certain distance (usually up to 6", up to 12", or up to 24", though there are exceptions). All things like shooting, close-combat, leadership rolls are determined base on d6 or 2d6 rolls.

Each faction or race has their own specialties and play-style. For example my two armies are Imperial Guard which are the average joes fighting against whatever horrors the universe throws at them. Generally they have cheap expendable troops with a ton of guns and great vehicle support. Very versatile army with several build options.

My second army are the Tyranids. Think of them like the Zerg. Masses of mindless critters being controlled by a hive mind and marshalled/supported by bigger scary critters. A bit low on the power scale compared to other armies and are very difficult to play, but the models look nice.

Great explanation Karl. 40k potentially scare off people because of the $$$ and how long some scenarios can take. Also, some codecies are in need of tweaks and upgrades so some armies are at a disadvantage in those respects. Personally I don't mind spending a few hours on a Saturday or driving a bit. I got into 40k back in high school through the painting angle actually, turns out I'm pretty good at it so I painted a pair of armies for a friend. In return he gave me his old eldar army and I painted those fielded em once or twice. Ended up selling em because, blech xenos. (don't really care for eldar :P) Instead, I picked up some Space Marines and have been adding to my armies ever since. Right now I have 3 that I will normally bring to the table.

My favorites are my Space Wolves, new models look so good and the play style suits me. Been an off and on success, not really my strongest group of guys but I love the lore behind em. Which brings me to...

Salamanders. By far my most successful army. Flamers Meltas Flamers Meltas Flamers Meltas...Vulkan Hestan. Yep more flamers and Meltas. Oh, also thunder hammers a plenty. This set up has been wrecking my competition pretty regularly. Loves me some Meltas. PROMETHIUM

The last group and newest are the Orkz, more specifically, waaaaaaagh. Have yet to field them in a tourny or anything, been mostly just fun games with friends. I like em, will probably end up adding enough to make a nice 2000 point army like my others. I can see becoming competitive with this group but, I need to add more key pieces besides a battlewagon and burnas :P

If you wanna get your feet wet in 40k probably the best way to do it is the assault on black reach set. ->LINKY<-

I'm actually pretty fed up with dealing with GW. I love the game and the models, but the company is a joke. Don't care about the fanbase, jack-up prices, poor game support, and poor rules-development (8th Edition Fantasy is a joke and hopefully 6th edition 40k won't be).

Though there are ways to get models about 20-30 percent off pretty easily, which actually puts them at an acceptable price. The vehicles, though, are decently priced....especially tanks.

1/72 scale models of Abrams tanks by Revel or something usually clock in at 65-80 USD, so GW's 35-40 are actually fairly reasonable. Knock 25% off of that going through independent retailers and you actually have a great deal.

Miniature games are all expensive (though Flames of War IMO is the best of the big 3 mini games when it comes to price, great company to deal with, and a very competitive system.....if they're tourny set-up didn't suck....baby steps, though, baby steps)

Currently trying to get rid of the Tyranids, but I'll keep the IG as I love the army and I've put a lot of work into it.

Sooo if anyone here or if anyone is looking to get started with an army, hit me up. Everything is pretty well painted.

Good deal, I've done a few commissions for painting as well but never got an army out of it.

I, on the other hand, can't stand marines at all. I did have a daemonhunters army with the old codex, but didn't want to shell out the cash to update to the new book.

I'm a firebug, no doubt about that. :D

And well done on that painting man, impressive work!

I made the mistake of buying quite a bit from GW when I got started, now I deal only with A) fellow gamers or B) ebay. That does help out alot with how much things cost though, I don't like skimping on paint pots. Sometimes I'll spend a little too much on those. Also, most rule books are available as scans and in PDF format if you know where to snaggle them from.

Paint I will shell out for. Citadel acryllics aren't that high of a quality. I prefer Vallejo or P3 (especially the mixing medium) for those. Citadel metallics and Washes/Inks are great, though. The high pigment content ones for basecoating are okay as well.

I haven't touched any Citadel since they've re-done the line-up and categories so I have no idea how the: Base, Shade, Layer, Glaze, Texture, Technical, and Dry types compare.

.....I also didn't know that they made those many different types until I just looked.....interesting. Huh, looks like they now have a brush-on primer (already have one from a different company), a mixing medium (but I like P3 mixing medium), and liquid green stuff (...huh..odd. Can be useful for filling small gaps and recesses). Textured ones also look interesting. I've just been mixing my paints with flock or sand to do that, but this merits looking into.

Looks like they really expanded the range and versatility of their paints. Still about .70 USD overpriced. P3 is about .20 USD cheaper with quite a bit more paint in the pot.

I have to admit dry-brush specific paints sound very tempting, especially on vehicles and tyranid chitin plates. I always waste a lot of paint waiting for it to dry out enough (and then wipe most of the paint off the brush) just to get a decent dry-brush going.

I've plenty of Vallejo to piddle with, I find I have less of a water mix when using it than with the Citadel paints so, that helps because I tend to be just a little heavy handed in application. I can say that the new line up is pretty great. Definitely try em out if you get the chance. Yeaaaaaah they're still more expensive than they should be. Paying for that brand again :P

Hey, so there are going to be 4 SWFans people in the Dallas/Fort Worth area this summer.....which of you have Settlers of Catan?

I don't own a copy of the game, but I have regular crew that plays. Except we have a variant we call "Samplers of Catan". One of the local microbreweries lets us take board games into the place to play.

So we order a few sampler racks of beer and everytime you earn a victory point, you down a sampler (6 ounces I believe).

Which means right off the bat each person drinks two samplers (to the two settlements placed).

Good times ensue.

Mission and Deployment
Sieze Ground (3 objetives) and Pitched-Battle Deployment. One objective in the center of the middle ruins. A second objective in the open about 16 inches from the center building. And a third objective near a ruined wall.

Game Board
http://i10.photobucket.com/albums/a105/Hockeyman506/2012-05-19_13-40-52_628.jpg
http://i10.photobucket.com/albums/a105/Hockeyman506/2012-05-19_13-41-03_549.jpg

We rolled off for deployment after placing the three objectives (the blue tokens). I won and chose to deploy first.

Imperial Guard Deployment

Put both gunships with flame thrower squads embarked deployed center-field near the back. The battle tank hid behind a ruined wall with clear line-of-sight to one object. The veteran squads set up off center in alternative deployment with the demolishers (plasma and company command squad on right with a melta squad on the left). And finally a melta squad on the far side behind the last ruin on my side.

Because I gave the stormtroopers recon, they go the "Scouts" and "Move Through Cover" special rules so I held them in reserves inside their APCs and declared them to outflank (come in from the sides of the boards when they enter from reserve).

Blood Angels Deployment
Chris put one Rhino / Razorback center-field to the right, the Landraider (big freaking tank-transport thing) center field behind the big ruin in the middle. The last razorback went to the left of center along with the Baal Predator. And the last Rhino + Predator hid behind the landraider. He held both of his Thyphoons in normal reserves.

One of the Razorback assault squads succumbs to the red thirst (special rule for Blood Angels) and gain both "Fearless" and "Furious Charge".

Scout Phase
I won this roll-off as well. One Vendetta jumped 18 inches far left to get a bead on the transports hiding behind the landraider. Second gunship scuttled over a bit as well to get a better angle on the landraider / APCs.

Chris's Baal Predator zoomed forward 18 inches behind the far-central forest and popped his smoke launchers (grants vehicle cover)

Here is the map after deployment and scout movement

http://i10.photobucket.com/albums/a105/Hockeyman506/2012-05-19_14-06-36_44.jpg

Turn One
Imperial Guard moves forward as a whole (just a bit). Far back Chimera zooms forward 12 inches and pops smoke. Company Command Squad moves 12 inches to cover behind one of the ruins, but also pops smoke as it's in line of sight of a razorback and rhino. Everything else moves up to 6 inches.

A whole turn of shooting sees me do.....well.....almost nothing. The Twin-Linked lascannon gets shot off of one Razorback, one rhino is immobilized, and the second has it's stormbolter shot off. Very very depressing and lackluster.

The Blood Angels all advance at top speed (except for the predator) with the landraider popping smoke. Blood Angels have very fast vehicles that can move up to 18 inches rather than the standard 12 inches (fast skimmers like my Vendettas can move up to 24 inches).

Blood Angles shooting takes out one twin-linked lascannon on the far Vendetta and shakes the crew of one Chimera. IE doesn't do much. However the immobilized Rhino does repair itself (special rule they have).

All in all a very boring first turn with both of us trying to jostle for position.

Map at the end of turn one.

http://i10.photobucket.com/albums/a105/Hockeyman506/2012-05-19_14-26-37_63.jpg

Turn Two
I keep moving for position. The far chimera tries to barge its way through the trees in order to get close enough for the troops inside to disembark and kill the Baal Predator........but it fails its dangerous terrain test and immobilizes....well fuck...

Both stormtrooper squads pass their reserve rolls and end up both showing up on the close (right) side. I was hoping for one on either side, but good enough. They are in perfect position to slag the Razorback and Rhino that are hiding behind the near ruin.

http://i10.photobucket.com/albums/a105/Hockeyman506/2012-05-19_14-26-43_662.jpg

Rest of the movement is inconsequential.

My shooting again does almost nothing except prevent the enemy from moving a bit (which is good). The stormtroopers and Chimera APCs fail miserable and just manage to immobilze + stun the razorback and stun the rhino. The second rhino is immobilzed. The landraider soaks up a ridiculous amount of firepower and is just fine with no damage to show for it

And here is where I hurt. Landraider busts through the central ruin (passing its dangerous terrain test with ease) and disembarks the terminators + librarian. The immobilzed rhino (by the central ruins) disembarks its assault squad + priest which move towards my APC carrying the plasma veterans. And the Razoback on the far side (with the destroyed turret) disembarks its assault squad which move toward my Demolisher.

Both assault squads behind the far ruin disembark to try and murder the storm troopers.

Here is what the pre-carnage looks like.

http://i10.photobucket.com/albums/a105/Hockeyman506/2012-05-19_14-48-05_470.jpg

http://i10.photobucket.com/albums/a105/Hockeyman506/2012-05-19_14-48-14_256.jpg

Shooting sees some minor damage and a shaken Vendetta, though the Chimera carrying plasmagunner also explodes, killing 5 guardsmen in the process. One stormtrooper APC is wrecked as well (they dismebark just fine).

The assault phase is what hurts. The librarian uses his psychic power "Unleash Rage" but suffers "Perils of the Warp" and takes wound (Yessssssssss!) The terminators + librarian then multi-assault a Demolisher, Hellhound, and Chimera. The Chimera and Demolisher are destroyed and explodes respectively. The second Demolisher explodes as well to the assault squad. The resulting explosions manage to kill to assault marines as collateral damage. The Hellound is merely stunned.

Surprisingly the assault marines attacking the stormtrooper chimeras completely whiff everything.

The last assault squad going after the Chimera carrying the plasma gunners barely manages to roll high enough on their "Difficult Terrain" test and chew the poor guys to pieces.

Here is the post carnage. The felt rectangles are the remains of exploded vehicles and count as area terrain (IE craters). The smoke clouds indicate wrecked vehicles (if on top of the vehicle) or vehicles that have popped smoke (if beside the vehicles).

Turn Three
The Imperial Guard just lost 4 vehicles...including their heaviest hitting tanks...not good. However, they are now incredibly pissed off.

The stormtroopers all disembark and move into position to unleash fury on the marines! The Vendettas move forward and disembark the flame thrower squads. The squad the just got shot out of their Chimera moves into position to gun down the Terminators. The far squad disembarks out of their useless transport (immobilzed and main gun destroyed) and moves toward the Baal, Razorback, and Thypoon. The Battle Tank also moves to get a better shot on the assault marines that just killed the plasma gunners.

Shooting phase sees the Company Command issuing the order, 'First Rank Fire, Second Rank Fire", to one flame thrower squad and one meltagun squad. The combined fire kills off 4 of the terminators AND the Librarian. The Company Command Squad's Chimera finishes off the last terminator

HUZZAH!

The far flame thrower completely wipes out the assault squad that killed the Demolisher.

Huzzah!

The Battle Tank kills four of the marines hiding out in the crater left by the plasma gun carrying Chimera.

Huzzah!

The far squad wrecks the rhino sitting on the objective (didn't have the range to do much to the Baal unfortunately.

Huzzah!

But....the stormtroopers whiff and manage to only kill one assault marine.

Boo!

And the Company Command Squad and both Vendetta whiff everything while shooting at the Landraider...though they do manage to immobilze it.

Boo!

Blood angles gear up for some revenge as well, but don't manage much. The large assault squad + priest near the stormtroopers don't have enough movement to embark onto their APC, but the small assault squad gets a charge in on the last Chimera.

The marines that soaked up fire from the Battle Tank move towards the Company Command APC. The Baal, Predator, and Typhoon shift around a bit. Second Typhoon shows up from reserves.

Shooting sees one vendetta shaken and another twin-linked cannon shot off the other. Company Command APC soaks up a lot of fire, but the Landraider manages to destroy it. Some shooting kills two stormtroopers.

Company Command Squad is assaulted by the marines (just barely and I think a rule was violated here, but it wouldn't have mattered in the long run) and are completely wiped out.

I've never played it, but I have perused the system and some of the scenarios and it looks really interesting. The varied scenarios available look like a lot of fun (a stage play, and 1920s gangster situation, a murder mystery, even a Harry Potter-esque wizarding school scenario is available - plus all the fan made ones like Wil's).

This game looks pretty fun... Fiasco:

I'm just watching this right now, and it seems like the kind of awesomeness that is right up our alley. If we can get a hold of a copy in time, would people be willing to give it a go at Nerd, maybe during the first week before we've got a full set of Banana people?

We might have to play the "Reconstruction" one, just so we've got an excuse to get Christin into drunk Jodie Foster mode. :mischief

Or maybe Alpha Complex:

Times are tough, lately, in the underground city of Alpha Complex. Communists, mutants, and secret society traitors are a constant threat, and it's starting to seem like maybe they're winning. It's getting so an honest Troubleshooter can't get ahead just by doing the job. Which is why you're a less than completely honest Troubleshooter. Your secret society connections and your mutant power help you do well on your missions. You need to do really well on this next mission -- or, at least, you need everyone else on your team to do really poorly. You don't know the mission yet, but you know exactly three things you'll have to do: Stay alert. Trust no one. Keep your laser handy.

Also, speaking of the Fiasco episode, I think I'm in love with Alison Haislip. :3:

A couple I like the sound of:

Camp Death

So, here’s the deal. Camp Clearwater’s been abandoned since some grisly, “unsolved” murders 20 years ago. Or whatever. The new owner probably made that up as some creepy story to tell the campers and scare up business. What I know is that we’ve got a couple weeks to get this place set up before any campers arrive, and most of the hard work is already done. We’ve got enough booze, pot, and distance from authority to make this the greatest summer ever. What could go wrong?

Los Angeles 1936

"I needed a drink… I needed a lot of life insurance, I needed a vacation, I needed a home in the country. What I had was a coat, a hat and a gun." –Raymond Chandler

In Raymond Chandler's Los Angeles, circa 1936, the sun-blinded streets would just as soon put a knife in your back. And all the diamond-edged glamour of a Hollywood starlet can’t save you from a fall off a 30-story building.

Enter the black and white world of smoky nightclubs and faded apartment hallways, where every crime is shot "on location." There are many grand dreams waiting to be unraveled. Are you ready to enter the labyrinth?

And this just sounds like the Dark Banana :lol

Dragon Slayers

"The bumpkins in this pissant mountain town could never have taken down that dragon. Their biggest hero hasn’t seen battle since Drozzek rode down from the Smoking Mountains three wars-to-end-all-wars ago. So yeah, we rode into town, a bunch of outsiders ready to solve that problem. And no, we don’t care what they think. And yes, we’re heroes. These yokels should worship at our feet. They sure as hell didn’t slay that dragon. That’s our dragon, and its gold is our gold. So unless you’re bringing us ale and whores, get the fuck out before we transform you into a turkey and serve you for dinner."

BTW if anyone fancies a game of Ticket To Ride, you can get it on Steam and play online :)

Hey all! I usually don't post ads here, but several people have asked me about miniatures and painting and I know a bunch of you play RPGs and the like where minis can help out.

So Reaper miniatures started up a Kickstarter for a new line of products. Currently there is less than two days left so sorry about the short notice.

They have raised nearly 2 million USD from their original goal of 30k.

The cool thing is that with the $100 pledge you get a crap-ton (over 200) miniatures varying from Orcs, to sci-fi marines, to dragons, to who-knows-what-else.

And at each milestone, they add more minis to the $100 level rewards.

For example currently if they hit 2,060,000 USD, a male and female Storm Giant will be added to the $100 pledge level. Considering minis are usually $3-$12 USD, $100 up front for 200+ minis is a huge deal.

On top of that at each milestone, a special model (usually very large, that usually cost $30-$50) is also release for an added fee and you can always pledge extra ($5-$15) to increase the number of minis for a particular group ($6 to get 6 more marines for example).

So if you're looking for a deal on miniatures and helping to kickstart a new product line, pitch in!

For example what I'm doing

Vampire Level ($100 for ~200+ models) + Figure Case & Trays ($25 for a case to carry/protect about 150 models) + Clockwork Dragon ($15 for a huge Clockwork Dragon model with a 7-9 inch wingspan) + Nethyrmaul ($25 for an absolutely massive dragon + scenic base) = $165

Plus I'm thinking of maybe picking up the Frost Giant pair ($10) and maybe the Undead Giant ($10) or Red Dragon ($10).

Is anybody still watching this?

Thanks to Wil Wheaton I've been converted to a board game geek and proud of it!

Bought myself Settlers of Catan a while back and had lots of fun with that. So wanting more, I basically haven't shut up about board games to my wife since then. For my 30th birthday last week she bought me the Settlers of Catan 5-6 Player Extension, Small World and Pandemic.

Two friends are coming round tomorrow afternoon (another geeky couple) so we playtested Pandemic this afternoon between the two of us and had a real blast! I've watched the Table Top Extended Episode of Small World enough times to know the rules inside out so no playtest is needed of that.

I'm not looking for other good board game suggestions. I'd quite like to build up a range of board games for my collection. I quite like the look of deck-building games and economic/trading games as well as anything sci-fi or zombie or Cthulhu-themed. I've got my eye on Arkham Horror and Elder Sign in particular as well as the relatively new Legendary Encounters deck-building card game which is an Aliens-themed (as in Giger's Alien) version of Legendary; the DC-themed deck-building game.

I've also heard good things about Mage-Knight and Twilight Imperium.

Good to hear, Peter :) I credit Wil Wheaton for getting me into table top gaming too, and now I play every Tuesday. My favorite thing to play so far has been Seven Wonders.

I don't know whether you've already played it or not, but I'd be careful before you buy Arkham Horror. It's one of those games that takes about an hour to set up and many more hours to play, so you really need to set aside a good chunk of time to have a proper game. Especially if you're new to all the rules.

From the looks of Wil's Facebook, I guess they must be filming another series of Table Top right now - huzzah!

Seven Wonders is a game I've also had a look at. I'm tempted by it!

During our 5-day stint at Pontins last week, I managed to talk a few members of my wife's family to try out Settlers of Catan. Even though we only got around 5 turns in before the baby needed feeding and we all needed to start getting ready for dinner, everyone was hooked and my brother-in-law has requested a gaming night at the earliest opportunity.

I bought Elder Sign today.

I really enjoyed the initial box opening - the components are gorgeous! The artwork is brilliant and I love the style too. Insted of standard-sized cards you get small cards as well as Tarot-sized cards. I'd recommend watching the episode of Table Top where they play this game, it's a good one. I havem't played yet but plan to ASAP, even if it's by myself. And the cool thing is it can support a large group as it's for 1-8 players.

The game takes place in the Miskatonic University Museum in Arkham, with players assuming the roles of various investigators as befitting a Lovcraftian tale of horror - psychologists, private eyes, gangsters etc. Players are working together to prevent the awakening of the Ancient One - one of 8 monsrous entities from Lovecraftian Lore, such as Cthulhu, Shog Sothoth or Nyarlathotep for example. Each turn players move around the museum, represented by Adventure Cards. Each Adventure has certain task requirements. To complete a task the player whose turn it is rolls the dice pool. If any dice come up with a result to satisfy all of the current task requirements, then those dice are placed on that task and it is copleted. The player then rolls the remaining dice to attempt to complete the next task. If all tasks are completed in this way then the Adventure is resolved and rewards are given to the player. If the player fails to complete a task he can discard one die from the dice pool and make another attempt. If the player fails to complete a task and has one die left, it is discarded and fails the Adventure, suffering its penalties.

As a result of completing Adventures, players can earn Elder Signs. On the Ancient One Card that the players are using for the game, it details the number of Elder Signs needed to seal away the Ancient One and win the game. But certain game events will cause Doom Tokens to be placed on the Ancient One card. When all Doom Tokens are on the card, the Ancient One awakens. All players then have to confront the Ancient One in one final desperate attempt to defeat t. If all players are devouced then they lose the game.

There are many events that can occur. At game start 6 are in play and players can move around attempting to complete them. As one Adventure is resolved or failed, a new Adventure card takes its place. The Adventure cards themselves represent the investigators moving around the museum and the actual text on the card and the tasks that need completing are what happens during their nightly vigils inside the old building.

Some tasks have many requirements and with a limited dice pool it an seem very hard to be able to complete an Adventure card with multiple tasks that each have multiple requirements, especially considering each dice committed to sayisfying a tasks requirements cannot be used to complete subsequent tasks. But there are ways to increase your chances such as spending Clue Tokens you have earned, rerolls and character or item abilities that can add dice to the pool. Amd when one Adventurer is devoured, that player gets to pick a new one (there are 16 in the base game) and continue playing.

Co-operative play comes into it by how you approach completing the Adventures. For example, one particular Adventure may have a task requiring a certain dice roll that one investigator in particular has an easier time obtaining, such as being able to replace one type of result with another. Plus players can assist one another by focusing a die result from a failed roll to be used on the next roll, nut if the current player fails the Adventure card while being assisted in this way, the assisting player suffers a Sanity or Stamina loss, so there's a drawback to this aid.

Can't wait to play this! I bsolutely adore the theme - huge Lovecraft fan - and the mechanics seem simple enough to grasp but complex and varied enough to be compelling.

I may have mentioned that I have a new job - working in a store nearby that buys and sells second-hand goods - gaming consoles, games, ipads, ipods, phones, laptops, DVD's and Blu-Rays etc. I absolutely love working there. And my colleagues are all like-minded individuals who love movies and videogames. The manager, Mo, recently attended a friends Stag Night which he described as "the geekiest gathering ever!" where they played Dungeons and Dragons and Guitar Hero (two separate things!). He also said they'd planned to start a Vampire: The Masquerade campaign. As such, we've been chatting quite a bit in work about the settings and I even lent him some sourcebooks I have. Ultimately I was incrfedibly jealous that he was going to be playing. I've had some very limited experience playing with a few friends, including Droo, but it never really went anywhere and certainly didn't last long, and I think it's no longer somethign they'd be interested in anyway.

So it was a wonderful surprise when I arrived in work this morning to be asked what I got up to on Friday evenings. My answer being "Nothing in particular.", Mo then asked "Fancy making it Vampire Night?".

Turns out the venue, the home of one of his friends who is playing, is only a brisk 20-minute walk from where I live. And I got another awesome surprise when I arrived there tonight. Not only are the other three guys super-awesome friendly doods, but the guy whose house it is was in my tutor groups at university when I studied Imaginative Writing from 2004 to 2007.

This evening's session was mainly about getting our characters set up and establishing the scene. It's set in Liverpool where I live, and the coterie's "thing" is that we're in a prog-rock band called Inertia Haven. There's a Malkavian who has memory lapses on drums (Mo), a Toreador heroin addict on base guitar, a Lasombra Antitribu as lead guitarist, and my character - an affluent, fortunate Tremere Ancillae with resources, connections, allies and a powerful, well-respected sire as singer, front-man and financier.

Tonight there was a gathering at Elysium within Liverpool's Walker Art Gallery - the Prince had some important announcements to make. Currently the Garou have control of Chester and it's surrounding areas, which is on the other side of the River Mersey, while the Sabbat are deeply routed in Manchester, the nearest large city to Liverpool. 7 years ago the Giovanni attempted a coup which failed and the city was purged of all Giovanni - they either fled or met Final Death. Around the same time the Followers of Set aided the Camarilla in repelling a Garou incursion into the city. In return they were granted permission to establish a temple, albeit small and limied in how many Settites were allowed within Liverpool. Now, not only are the Settites looking for permission to increase their presence, but the Giovanni have requested to be allowed back in to mend some bridges with the Camarilla. As such, the Liverpool Kindred are all on edge. What's more, our band's next gig is in Manchester - Sabbat territory - where a tenuous truce exists between the two opposing factions. While not without peril, the gig is an opportunity to not only increase exposure to the awesome sounds of Inertia Haven, but also a chance to gather information on the true motives of the Settites who have a larger presence in Manchester. Meanwhile our feelers are out concerning the Giovanni and we've currently got no intentions of heading "over the water" as we Scousers like to put it.

The Storyteller, John, has a lot of the background info already set out as it's a continuation of a campaign he played a few years ago, and he's happy to accomodate my ideas for my sire, a missing twin brother who was also Embraced by my sire, as well as my contacts and allies even though I'm turning up late to the party so to speak.

I'll be fleshign out the details on my characters background and history as well as his various contacts, allies and his sire over the weekend. He's basically a kind of Vampire Indiana Jones, very knowledgeable and academic, great at investigation and research and science but physically quite weak and a budding Thaumaturgist. His brother was Embraced quite some time before him but disappeared without a trace. Heartbroken, his sire then embraced my character - Simon - an identical twin. As such, my characters suffers from a mistaken identity. Many characters mistaken him for his missing brother. As the Tremere cannot explain how or why his brother disappeared, the events and circumstances surrounding his disappearance are of great concern. As such, Simon has developed a keen interest in the occult and the studying of Kindred history, lore and mysticism to shed light on what happened, as well as to further his own development in bith his clan and Kindred society in general.

I seriously cannot fucking wait for next friday!

PS: One of the best things about John's approach to Storytelling is his minimal use of dice rolls!

So far, my Vampire campaign has progressed every other week, with the alternating Friday evenings being a more general gaming night.

In the previous session, before the events at Elysium were through, the Nosferatu Primogen, Samuel Lower, arrived with a captive - a mortal man. A hunter. He was made an example of, Embraced on the spot by the Prince and immediately bound. His execution was to take place at sunrise, and those with the fortitude were invited to glimpse up at the clockface of the Liver building at first light. The Malkavian Primogen, Molly Mere (think of Queen Elizabeth I from Blackadder's 2nd series and you'll have an idea of what she's like) being our drummer Stevie's sire, was able to secure us front-row seats at the Prince's private apartment opposite the iconic office building with shaded windows to allow safe viewing. The hunter was restrained in fornt of the clockface, with a sack over his head. As the sun rose, the figure began to smoke up before catching aflame and burning up, leaving the head untarnished and the fangs exposed as the lips curled up into a perpetual snarl. The head was to be sent back to the hunters as a message.

Later that week our vampire band, Inertia Haven, played their gig in Manchester at a Sabbat venue. Realising that the bands noral sound might be a tad mellow for the crowd, we cranked it up a few notches and played all-our Rock for a change. The set opener was a particular highlight as we played a cover of Rage Against The Machine's "Killing In The Name Of", with the added twist of singing "Chillin' in a Gay Bar" instead of the actual lyrics, showing the Sabbat patrons that although we're Camarilla Kindred, we don't give a fuck where we are. It went down a treat and was taken in good humour. After the set the main act, Crucial Joke (a Killing Joke cover tribute band), took to the stage. Our coterie mingled for a spell, meeting the local Tzimisce elder, The Thing. The Thing had a request for us to pass on to the Prince - a small, temporary Sabbat presene in Liverpool - a small pack to keep an eye on things Garou-related. The tunnels running under the river Mersey were watched carefully on both sides ever night and it was a growing concern for the Kindred on the eastern side. And with manchester very close to Liverpool, the Sabbat were also concerned. We promised to pass on the request. Then my character, Simon the Tremere, had to dash off on an errand for Liverpools Tremere Primogen - word had surfaced that a Euthanatos Mage knew where to find a parchment from the Book of Nod. The Mage in question wa sindebted to the Liverpool Primogen and considered it repaid as part of the exchange. The Mage directed my character to a small, secluded storeowned by a woman called Rachel Straten - a Hedgewitch. Meanwhile, our drummer Stevie (a Malkavian suffering from occasional memory lapses) had secured us a place to stay for the next few nights - an old friend from when he was a mortal, who had been embraced by the Tzimisce elder The Thing and owned a Kindred tattoo parpour in Manchester. Retiring there for the evening, we rested.

The next night, I met with Rachel Straten who was expecting me. I was successful in bargaining for the parchment - a ridiculously old manuscript that was undoubtedly from the Book of Nod (my character is a scholar of Kindred History and well-educated on occult-related issues in general) - in return for access to the Tremere archives back in Liverpool. I also spied a fine prize on a shelf at the back of the shop - a Garou dagger, masterly crafted from the enlarged fang of a Garou Elder. The price tag was steep but justified, and was pocket change for my characters fortunate upbringing and financial backing. I also purchased a vial of Garou vitae. After a visit to a local Sabbat club where we were guests vouched for by The Thing as a gesture of goodwill towards the Liverpool Camarilla, we returned to Liverpool before dawn that morning.

And that was the end of the session

--------------------------------------------------

Tonight's session was epic!

The following evening we returned to Elysium. I checked in with my Primogen, presented him with the fragments of the Book of Nod, along with the Garou vitae as a gift (I'm playing Simon as a real brown-noser as any good Tremere should be played) which was graciously accepted. Then in comes Samuel Lower, standing in front of where the Prince would usually be. It seems the Ventrue elder had gone missing since we were last in the city. Then suddenly a ghoul guard from outside runs in with a box, claiming it had been hurled form a car that barely slowed down as it passed before speeding of finto the night. Sure enough, it contained the de-fanged head of the Prince, branded with a mark - thre mark of the Hounds of Abel - Camarilla sources in the city had since identified the hunters as the Hound sof Abel and ascertained that they were operating somewhere in North Wales, south of the territory controlled by the Garou across the river.

After a short time of heated conversation amongst the Primogen, Sam Lower sits down in the Prince's chair. He was stepping in, reluctantly. Then down to business: the Giovanni had been granted rights to set up in Liverpool, for now restricted to the area surrounding the docks. Word around Elysium was that they were opening up a Kindred nightclub and looking for bands, possibly even a house band - we made a point to show our faces later that evening. As for more pressing matters, Samuel made it clear that for the meantime Chester and the Garou presence was not our mian concern, nor was it the potential Sabbat pack that could end up operating within the city itself, but rather the coven of hunters residing not a stones throw away in North Wales. For now, all Kindred were to be wary and ready. Another unknown kindred arrived, accompanied by a large wolf. The kindred was Simon Leone, a Gangrel Elder so powerful that even the Garou feared him - he hunted them for sport.

So with that done for now, our group (now missing it's Bass player as Stuart had to drop out as he currently cannot guarantee he'll be available every week for our gaming night) decided to take a stroll from the Walker Art Gallery (Elysium) to the Albert Dock and pay the Giovanni a visit. On the way, we ran into some pretty ugly trouble. A black Landrover pulled up and the occupants opened fire. We took some damage but our guitarist, Devin (a Lasombra Antitribu) managed to conjure up some thick shadows around the vehicle through his Obtenebration, obscuring their view. This prompted an albino man to exit the jeep. Thinking quickly, Jay who plays Devin declared he would use Dominate on the man. Accumulating 6 successes, he gained complete control over the assailant and gave a simple command - "subdue your accomplices, do not kill them".

All of a sudden, the albino man seemed to simultaneously grow from 5'6" to over 7' and seemingly rip his skin off. This wa sno longer an albino man, but a Garou in full Crinos form, and under Devins control. He proceeded to tear the doors off the jeep and drag out the three occupants. He crushed one leg belonging to a young petite girl, and grabbed the other two, a male and a female, late-forties to mid-fifties, by their necks - they passed out in seconds. But we were far from safe as the Garou was trying to resist Devins Dominate. The jeep was barely driveable so we all piled in and raced back to Elysium, with me holding my Garou dagger up to the monstrous beasts neck all the way (the dagger causes terrible aggravated damage to any supernatural beings, and the Garou was well aware of this and didn't resist Devins Dominate quite as much. Once inside the ghouls summoned help. The Prince, Samuel Lower, and the Gangrel Simon Leone came to the foyer. Within moments they had thick silver chains and bonds brought over and restrained the Garou who was taken off to a side room. We told both Kindred elders of what had transpired and the three mortals lying in the road five minutes away - ghouls were quickly dispatched to retrieve them. They soon returned and the three unconscious mortals were taken to the same room as the Garou.

So we returned to the docks to visit the Giovanni as planned, this time taking our van just in case. The Giovanni were very welcoming, as expected. Jay's character Devin ran into an old flame - a Giovanni ancillae. My character Simon engaged the other Giovanni ancillae in conversation concerning their labourers who were tirelessly working on setting up the club on the far side of the room near an under-construction stage. It was clear they were zombies (procured from a local construction site where a fatal accident had occured the day before). I expressed interest in wanted to learn more about their necromantic powers in exchange for secrets on my clans own Blood magic (thaumaturgy). I made it clear that it was to be a most secred exchange given my clans abhorrence towards Giovanni in general and Necromancy in particuar. We agreed to talk more later in the week after the gig we were to play the night the club opened. We then went about the city for a time, making sure we were well-fed before retiring for the night.

The next evening we headed to Elysium as usual. Once there, we were invited to the Garou's execution. Since the prior evening, it had been leanred that the Garou in Chester and the hunters in North Wales were working in unison - the Hounds of Abel literally were hounds, or at least some of them! It was now known that they had a small, undercover base in the city where they had been operating form, observing Kindred ongoings - for how long was unknown. The Tremere Primogen and several other elders were present, as well as the other Primogen of the city, along with Samuel Lower and Simon Leone. The Tremere formed a circle around a large, sturdy table/bed where the Garou was restrained with silver chains and bonds. The mortal prisoners, now conscious, were being held in cages and shouting all manner of obscenities at us. The Tremere were enacting a ritual which would prevent the Garou from shapeshifting back out of Crinos form no matter what. Then his throat was slit and the operation was underway. We were told to return in a few hours to receive our reward for bringing the Garou down. We then left to see what was what in the city that evening, checking out a few local clubs to feed and socialise with retainers and other kindred.

When we returned to Elysium, the Prince, Samuel Lower, presented us with our rewards - a vial of powerful Garou vitae each, a segment of Garou albino pelt, and the knuckle bones of the Garou. Jay's character also received a skullcap made form the Garou's scalp since it was his efforts in Dominate which allowed for the live capture and for making the interrogation possible. We were also given a case of bones from the body, to be delivered to the Giovanni as a gesture of goodwill. But there was more! Simon Leone was, by rights, prince of the city. He'd had the position before, it was his. But he did not want it. As such, Samuel Lower would reluctantly remain as Prince for the time being. Simon himself was made Sheriff seeing as how the Garou feared him so much and were now a greater threat than initially thought. And our good selved were appointed as Scourge - essentially kindred law enforcers. We were essentially given license to destroy any kindred we witnessed or had sufficient evidence to prove they had broken any of the Traditions, as well as thin-bloods. Our first mission was to go to the store that was being used as a base of operations for the Hounds of Abel in Liverpool and find any information that may shed light on their local numbers and locations in Chester and North Wales. We were also given access to a lavish haven in a sub-basement of the Liver Building as well as Domain over the part of the city surrounding it. Given it's proximity to the Giovanni territory on the dock front, we were to watch over their activities - which wouldn't be hard or draw suspicion anyway since we'd be playing at their club anyway.

---------------------------------------------------

So yeah, a hell of a lot happened! With the experience points I've received so far I've puechased a new thaumaturgy path - Lure of Flames - and bumped it to level 2. Once it's at Level 3 I'll learn Movement of the Mind and concentrate on getting it to Level 4 so I can use telekinesis to control my Garou Dagger like the blue dude from Guardians of the Galaxy. John, our Storyteller, reckons there's half a dozen more sessions to this particular story depending on our approach. Following that it looks like we'll be having a crack at the Dresden Files RPG. Never read any of the books so gonna check 'em out. Incidentally, John and Jay met Jim Butcher the other night at a book signing in Waterstones in Liverpool City Centre. They said he was an awesome guy!

I'll be sure to write up the other sessions for those who are interested. If anything it's a place to record the events for myself.

That was a great read, so please keep us updated. :) I'd suggest perhaps starting a blog (http://theholo.net/forum/blog.php) to record your sessions as a better way of keeping record (rather than burying it here under the Table Top thread).

OMG you HAVE to read the Dresden Files books. The first two are probably the weakest (but still good) and then they just get better and better. I think it would be a blast to play the RPG.

i like reading your campaign sessions too. :) (reminds me of writing WoD with Jenny and Droo :cry )

A blog sounds like a great idea.
