Sanis Prent

So yeah.
Bandwagon-jumping to the last, but I've talked it over with Christin and Chris tonight and kinda would like some input on how things are going with my main characters. I've been on a spree of killing sacred cows, but I'm also worried I'm in a terminal habit of making every story I write too grim-dark. If you have any suggestions for my characters please let me know. If I'm doing something right, tell me to stick with it. If it sucks, tell me to change it. I want to have things make sense.
Sanis Prent has currently lost his ship, lost his livelihood, and lost his freedom, working unconditionally for Sasseeri Reeouurra. I have no idea where to go with him from here, unless he experiences some kind of Michael Corleone-esque relapse into the life of crime he was looking at before attempting honest living.
Cirrsseeto Raurrssatta is the acting Captain of the Alliance frigate Novgorod, but is weighed down by his conservative nature and inner doubts of inadequacy. He's also trying too hard in a relationship with Lyanie Quez. I'm projecting a lot of everyman idealism onto him, which I'd never have considered doing with this character in a million years.
Byl Laprovik has spent forever on the run with James Prent, and is finally turning to face some of what he's running from, which is partially the monster he used to be. I'm not sure how he's going to eventually come to grips with what a sociopath he used to be, and how he'll ever be able to justify himself to James, or provide a good life for her. It's incredibly difficult for me to find any happiness in this story.
Taataani Meorrrei is headed for a terrible reckoning. She's been making some dangerous decisions with her life, and it's finally about to start having horrible repercussions for her and her family. She's never had to experience the game when she's holding less than all the cards, and I feel really bad about tearing everything out from underneath her to see what she's made of.
Anbira Hicchoru is finally coming to terms with his visions of the end, and how to face that end. Cheerful.
Zem Vymes has just delivered the most terrible news to the Jedi since the end of the Clone Wars, and is living with the burden that his padawan and long-time friend is the instrument of the Jedi's second and perhaps final destruction.

I imagine that this would be hard to write, but I think it would be fascinating to read. Especially now that Cirr is flying the straight and narrow aboard the Revenge. I always felt that Cirr, the Layla and s'Ilancy were his tether to the Alliance. What happens when those stabilising influences are gone?

I'm the wrong person to talk about fixing up grim-dark stories. Most of mine end up being at least depressing, so I do have to work on seeing if I can do a straight up simple action piece or go for more relaxed stuff.
The only one of your characters I've had the privilege of roleplaying with extensively is Cirrsseeto. He's an excellent character, and he's very relatable. You manage to give him a great sense of life and I have noticed that everyman idealism in him; I like it. Stick with it, because it works well with him.
Sanis is simply enjoyable to read. He strikes me as being a much dirtier Han Solo, and Brad Pitt as his image is absolutely perfectly spot on. The chain of events leading from the Layla's destruction is some of the best stuff I've read in a while, before or since. Sanis as something of a chained dog is interesting, but I think if you're at an impasse or something to try and keep that hope in Sanis alive of escape, or eventual freedom. The way it could play out, especially with such a vibrant character as Sanis, would be very interesting to read.

Cirrsseeto is fantastic right now. He made an excellent second-fiddle to Sanis, but I'm full-on surprised how well he works as the man in charge. I really enjoyed the interaction we had between him and Tink: the kind of borderline naive, stubborn "what are you talking about? Maths is awesome" attitude was fantastic. It'll be interesting to see, as the Novgorod side of the story goes on, whether he ends up leading like a soldier, or leading like an engineer.
Taataani is a character that I love to hate. She's so infuriatingly annoying, and it's brilliant. I'm loving her interactions with Wyl especially: after seeing him with so many characters who quite clearly don't know to deal with children (especially mine!) it's nice to see someone with actual parenting skills. It might be interesting to see Taataani having some interaction with the political side of the Alliance: that's pretty underdeveloped, and you're exactly the sort of person (and Taataani is exactly the sort of character) to give it a swift kick in the balls.
Zem is great. Every post you write just drips with what he's like... you read it, and you think: "Yeah, this dude is the real deal." I know you've got a lot of plans down the road with Zem, but I think it would be nice to see him take a more significant role in leading / shaping the new Jedi Order: I can see him filling a Yodaish sage role on the Council, or something similar.
As a general comment... one of the things that impresses me most about your writing and your characters is that, not only do you cook up really cool and complicated arcs for them to develop, you actually follow through and make it happen. And along the way, that dedication to getting your writing done ends up being a driving force behind a whole host of other people. You're not the only one doing it, but you're definitely one of the main people who carries the SW setting along... you definitely deserve major kudos for that.

I'll be honest, I have a hard time buying Cirr as a competent starship captain, let alone a guy leading men in the Alliance navy. He's never struck me as the ambitious type, and while you do write him extremely well and there is certainly the aspect of all this has been foisted upon him by Loklorien who got him promoted (at least that's what I understood from what I've read).
I guess jumping from engineer on a freighter to captain was a bit sudden to me, but it could also be my history with the character from pre-reset that is clouding my judgement I am certain this is it, he was such an adorable lunkhead before. I cannot fault your storytelling, you are doing great. I guess I'd just like to see him feel a little more overwhelmed at times. Or lonely. He doesn't seem to miss Sanis at all. Maybe an "I am not good at this how did this get here?!" moment is in order? ;)
James and Byl are great together. Now that they're finally 'happy' for the moment I think they'll need to be driven apart. I love Byl's whole amnesiac arc, and can't wait for him to start remembering things, if he does. A side order of "who is the real Byl Laprovik?" confusion in his head might be in order. Your characterization is solid and really drives home the conflict between Byl living who he is now, and struggling with what he was before. I can't wait to see more as he peels back the onion layers of his former life.
Taataani is pretty crazy. Sasseeri can't wait for her to fall down and perhaps need a hand up from her half-sister. :cat BWAHAHAHAHA-coffcoff-hahaaaaa.
I love Sanis and I hope we can do good things with Slavedriver. I need to pull my head out of my butt and figure out what I'm doing in that thread before I kill it. Sanis as not-in-control is a great aspect to explore. Even when he thinks or pretends he's in control, Sass holds his life in her hands. And if she gets distracted she might even squish him by accident, so seeing you toe the line between "cocky sunofabitch" and "meek subordinate" is fun. Dance, monkey, dance! Anyway, more please. :D

I dabbled in his insecurities more immediately after Layla and in the whole trail of events that led to Sanis's kidnapping, but you're right, I haven't gone to the well lately and its something I've been planning to do very much. I've tried to tease out hints of his gnawing conservatism but it's still got a ways to go. Keep watching, especially when he's able to let his guard down near Lyanie.

I don't see Byl going back to that old life. I think to be a sociopath you have to have context or the lack of it. Do you get that back with full memory disclosure? I don't know. It's going to be one hell of a reaction for them both though, because she is just as in the dark as he is about what he did. Would he tell her? :(

Things are probably going to get desperate here. I wouldn't be shocked to see Taataani either need Sasseeri's help, or possibly worse, have Taataani's dirty deeds start to take on Sasseeri's style of doing things.

I think grooming Sanis to be Sassy's political safety valve and buffer zone for dealing with the Alliance is going to be great for long-term interaction between the two of them.
