View Full Version : Unexpected downtime
TheHolo.Net
Mar 1st, 2012, 09:41:39 AM
I want to take a moment to let everyone know that the unexpected downtime experianced here at SW-Fans.net was due to one of the ATsw-fans.net email accounts being hijacked and used to propogate spam by zombies all over the world. The host's datacenter provider discovered this and had our site suspended until the cause was determined and the issue addressed.
With any luck the malicious activity has now been stopped and our site can continue on like it has throughout the years.
Let this be a lesson to all that you should always use a strong password on an email account. Havok, that includes you! :p

That's why I always switch it up and use "12354." Throws them hackers off every time!

Plan of action for whenever the apocalypse may happen once more:
CHECK YOUR EMAIL. If you don't have anything from the staff in your inbox, you haven't been probated or banned.
Check Meras. Odds are there's already a thread in Omnicron Theta concerning the downtime. We're neurotic like that.
Check Swfans Forumites on FB. Multiple meeting places! I'd completely forgotten about it until Karl added me back to the memberbase. So there's also that.

No kidding. I don't know what I'd do if this place ever slipped into an internet blackhole. It's literally my home page.

Glad it got fixed. When I attempted to log in originally I thought Ogre forgot to pay the bills or something.
That, or Nup tripped over the cable. :p

Nup is too good for us, now. :colbert

Perhaps we should organize some sort of archiving project. Or...? I'll spend a zillion dollars in ink and paper and print up hard copies of all the RPs from forever.
Or not. :uhoh
Did I ever tell you guys how I bought Star Wars fan fiction from the 70s off of eBay one time? It's awesome. I'm not sure where it is right now, but they were seriously great. Actually one collection was from the 70s, the other from the early 80s. But imagine seeing just ANH and then letting your imagination run wild - and you're also a flower child. So the Jedi live in a hippy commune and Darth Vader (real name of course) is the resident bad boy.
I need to find those again. :lol

I cannot believe you have never shared it before. Honestly! Get up in that attic!
Lilaena De'Ville
Mar 1st, 2012, 04:32:50 PM
lol I would but I daren't try to get in there when I'm the only adult at home. The entrance to the attic is a hole in the wall eight feet off the ground, and the ground is actually a staircase. I'll need Ty to help me get up there, lol.
edit: lol lol lol <-- I didn't say it enough, so I added some more >_<
edit2: n/m they're right here in my hands, on the bookshelves the whole time!
edit3: http://www.sw-fans.net/forum/showthread.php?t=22352 new thread about them

how big is SW Fans and would it make sense to make a copy of our current state. Pack it and share it on an FTP so that several of us would be able to have a fault back copy just in case.
Another note: I think our infrastructure is pretty old and hacking assaults have become so common lately that we might want to consider to migrate or upgrade to a newer version of this forum.
Is that even possible? If so I would be glad to help with the funding.

Packing the data from this site and making it available on an FTP is a not really a good idea as well as probably being illegal as far as licensing (forum software, gallery software, and portal page software) is concerned.
Also: Backing up the data on the site yields a raw sql dump file which is pretty unwieldy by the average person.
Updating the software is a pretty good idea as far as security is concerned, but its a very big job. We would loose much of what makes our site unique as far as look and manipulation go.

I could export the board's contents to phpBB and make that available. Not sure how much of the board's contents would make it. It probably would not include all of the attachments, avatars, wiki, and gallery.

I considered using the downtime to go outside, but decided against it in the end and played Skyrim instead :/
