:lol that video.

Been getting my CrossFit on. Rocked out Angie (100 pullups, 100 pushups, 100 squats, 100 crunches, for time) on Monday. Rest day on Tuesday due to extreme pain.

Yesterday was a duel workout. Warmup and then 4 rounds of 10x vertical jumps, 10x pushups, 10x situps followed by 4 rounds of 10x kettlebell clean, 10x kettlebell windmill, 10x kettlebell snatch, 10x kettlebell press (35# and obviously 10 reps on each arm.)

Today was: 5 rounds - run 400 m, 10 burpees

followed by:

21x-18x-15x-12x-9x-6x-3x-6x-9x-12x-15x-18x-21x

- 35# kettlebell swing
- pushups

Been getting my CrossFit on. Rocked out Helen (100 pullups, 100 pushups, 100 squats, 100 crunches, for time) on Monday. Rest day on Tuesday due to extreme pain.

Absolutely love cross fit!

Currently in the process of training my out-of-shape ass to do a winter ascent of two 14,000 foot mountains in a few weeks.

http://14ers.com/photos/castlepeak/200902_Cast01a.jpg

Castle Peak (middle peak) is our first goal and Conundrum Peak (left side) is our finisher.

Four of us going, and yes we are all avalanche trained. ;) We have a 2-day approach on skiis and will camp about 2000 feet down from the summit of Castle Peak.

On summit day, we ski in as close as we can, then ditch the skiis (and strap them to our packs) for our ice-axes and crampons and try to make summit via the north-eastern coulier.

From there we traverse the ridge the mile or two over to Conundrum Peak. When we finish that sucker it's time for a victory beer and then we ski down western face back to base camp.

That's one of the ones you go for speed, right? I always enjoy those. By the last few sets I'm usually stuggling to finish. Good stuff!

Today's WOD is Fran. Of all the girls, I think she's the worst. I have never once been able to get through it without puking. MAYBE TODAY'S THE DAY*. :ohno

*except not really because Coach Jack isn't going to let me use bands today. Kipping pullups it is. D=

I'll be adding all of the photos to this thread (currently not up-to-date as I've made a few more summits):

We're going to be going mostly through waist to chest high powder so the shorties are don't have the surface area we need.

Plus we'll be skiing uphill and hauling all of our gear on packs and sleds.

AT skiis and bindings plus skins the whole way.

It's potluck time, so the only workout I'm doing is spending 12 hours on my feet lifting pots and pans. After that...back on the old routine once more :D

There are running shoes in my very near future...

I've also modified the way I eat. Not hugely...just cut back on portions and already have noticed a huge change in how much I eat before I'm "full". I've started losing weight just from that change alone so I'm pretty excited to see what happens when I toss in a regular exercise routine in the mix.

Went skiing for about 6 hours today with a bunch of the other grad students at Eldora resort.

Spent the entire time playing in the double-blacks on the backside and getting my gear a a few new dents and scrapes from all the fucking trees. Could barely squeeze past them at a few points.

And then a broomball game in an hour.

Probably taking it easy during the week (homework, work, and such). Going to hike Green Mountain a few times to get in better shape and practice using the crampons as well as self-arresting with an ice-axe in preparation for the big climb.

You definitely are taking WAY more advantage of the CO outdoors then I ever did! I'm so darn envious and disappointed at myself now that I don't have it :(

I'm almost ashamed to say "I went on a little hike" when Texas lacks anything elevated. But, I got off work around noon and after PT I wandered the outer trail at a nearby nature reserve. It was awesome and made long for the hikes back home :) Really wish I lived closer to some trails here. I'm debating moving closer to the lake near my bf, that has a fun trail around it but that is so far from work!

Pretty sure my weight has not changed... BUT, I'm happily making great choices when eating out. I don't do it often, but the past week I have and I order grilled chicken salads, eating it naked and focusing on the protein first before filling up on the other (I don't feel bad about leaving only lettuce) and for breakfast today I ordered egg whites and fruit. I like that I've made these changes.

Grabbing the Microspikes, Ice Axe, and climbing gear. Going to head out with a friend and climb Green Mountain tomorrow. I'll bring a camera along for the hell of it, but the photos probably won't be to impressive. An 8200 foot mountain just doesn't have much appeal to me after doing 14ers all summer and fall.

Just finished hiking Green Mountain. Really enjoyed this one, not nearly as hard as a 14er, but we still had over 2000 feet of elevation gain from base to summit. I'm glad I brought the ice axe and microspikes along or I probably wouldn't have gotten up the thing.

Snow and ice pretty much coated most of the mountain.

Played two games of water polo today. One both of them....including against the CU swim-team (co-ed league). They couldn't pass or throw worth shit, it was funny as hell shutting them out (11-0)

On to the semi-finals!

Also have the first game of playoffs for broomball tonight.

Did arms today. Went up to 15 lb weights on a few of the sets which is great since that was what I was doing when I stopped. I'm not quite back up to the level I was at before, but I'm almost there and will soon go beyond :D

I'm back to my regularly scheduled self-ass kicking plus a bike ride to and from work on gentle hills. It's about 10 miles round trip and takes me 25 minutes each way. Well, I push harder in the morning =]

I had to buy a new bike, my free bike was starting to fall apart. It's much more comfortable than my old bike, thankfully. Gonna do some core lifts again on Thursday night. I'm going to Miami on Friday right after work.

Had originally planned to do more legs today, but I decided instead to make today my rest day. It was a good decision. Tomorrow I will tackle legs, but I plan on doing mostly squats and leg lifts rather than the p90x routine.

Loklorien s'Ilancy
Mar 13th, 2012, 11:28:03 AM
Ok, so I integrated my benchwork into the legs routine, and I gotta say it makes the leg workout sooooo much better. There's only so many variations of squats that I can do before getting bored, and while they do break it up with pull-ups, I want more varied legwork. I subbed out leg extensions (50 lbs) and leg curls (35 lbs) for a few of the routine squats, and I honestly feel like I got more out of it that way. There are things on the disc that I like though; I was able to go deeper on wallsquats which I'm happy about, and while my pull-ups are generally abysmal, my body feels like its' tightening up its' form. I'm still using a chair, but I'm hoping that it won't be for much longer.

Gearing up and buying up supplies for the mountain climbing trip.

Weather has been warm down here so I'm a bit worried about avalanche danger. If you guys don't hear from me by next Wednesday could you please call Colorado Mountain Rescue?

Probably won't come to that, we're not stupid and we're well equipped for the trip.

Got everything packed and ready to go for the attempt.

Forcast looks great and avalanche danger is at a minimum. We're still going to play it safe and spread out (we all have avalanche beacons) during the 2 mile stetch called the "Chutes of Death" where avalanches are common.

We'll be making base-camp tomorrow evening and making our summit attempts on Sunday.

I'm really looking forward to skiing down a 14,000+ foot mountain.

Pictures will be posted when I get back.

Today I start another round of Insanity. I probably won't do it consecutively, as I have no intention of giving up CrossFit and yoga for the next two months, but on those days where I have neither it's definitely going on the roster.

I need opinions.

Two weeks sick. I stopped working out while sick. I've learned doing so only exacerbates the situation. Instead I just did stretches and some really light routines. Today finally feeling better. Did my first work out. Total crap.

Felt pretty frustrated afterwards. I don't know maybe it's naive of me trying to pick up where I left off after 2 weeks of being sick. I just didn't expect my performance to drop so dramatically. Was a biceps and back day today. I did half as many back reps and cut my bicep weights by 10-15 pounds per each for the entire routine.

I've still got a cough though so maybe I'm trying to do too much too fast.

How long does it take you guys to get back into the swing of a routine after being sick?

Well, after being put on the treadmill to walk and improve my heart rate for what seems like forever, trainer has changed things to walking/running intervals and 50 two-arm kettlebell swings @ 10lbs (a weight that will be increased over time).

It needs to stop raining nearly all the time so I can get back into rollerblading. And so I can justify buying rollerblades for the tornado monkey.

New climb planned in about 4 weeks. Going to be tackling Independence Monument in the Colorado National Monument near Grand Junction.

It's about a 450-500 foot class 5.7 - 5.11 climb. We'll be using a 5-pitch route with traditional climbing gear. Nuts, Cams, the usual.

Not a mountain, but something on the newer side to me. I think it'll be a fun challenge. :)

Climbing Blob Rock in Boulder Canyon with a buddy of mine as a bit of practice for climbing the First Flatiron in Boulder. The route we took was class 5.7-5.9 climbing for the most part. We didn't have any cameras with us unfortunately.

Here's the are we were climbing, our route was off on the far right. About 2 short pitches on a 60 meter rope. Hardest part was an anyoning overhang with no decent hand-holds anywhere. I feel four or five times before I said 'fuck it' and just climbing straight up and over the slab instead of trying to go around.

For some reason I was able to do just fine on the difficult part, but couldn't do the easier route. Weird.

http://www.mountainproject.com/images/58/15/106795815_large_e8f97c.jpg

The next day we headed up to the Chautauqua Park in Boulder and climbed the First Flatiron. Really fun climb. Took us 8 full 60-meter pitches to get the thing done so we were about 1400 feet off the deck at the summit.

Solid climb for the most part, but it got overcast, windy as hell, and a bit of rain one our last pitch to the summit. We really regretted the shirtless climbing at that point....though it would be a good idea with all the sun we had earlier in the day.

Took us about 4.5 hours to climb. We did have cameras for this one, but we were stupid and didn't take any pictures.

After my car accident and continual back issues (QQ to therapy not helping), I've decided to start the C25K again. I know I can run more than this (I did 5K in 30min the other week), but I need to start slow. I keep pushing myself too much and just irritate and inflame my SI joints and mid back area, which leads to taking days off and starting over again. SO...I will go slow and build myself back up. STINKS! But, I can't expect myself to just hop back into working out at the level I left off.

My old manager and friend is starting this week also, so I signed up to do it with her for accountability! Sadly, I have to make up some time and run 3 days in a row, heh...

Should also start some yoga and I really need to strengthen my core.... one thing at a time!

Ever'body gettin' so fit! :love

It's been pretty hectic and stressful here the last few weeks, what with the date of the giant international move creeping steadily closer (ohgodsomuchtodo) but that just means I've been working out like a mothertrucker. Diet needs some tweaking as I'm still way too dependent on caffeine (black coffee) and could do with easing off of the coconut flour and instead concentrate on just pure, whole foods. However, I am pleased with what CrossFit is doing to my body and in addition to weekly yoga and weightlifting sessions, summer fun (swimming, surfing, ultimate, hiking, cliff jumping, etc) I've started incorporating twice-weekly Tabata sprints (20 seconds max effort, 10 seconds rest, repeated eight times for a total of four minutes) and 1 weekly beach sprint session (10 steps jog, 12 steps transition pace, 15 steps full out max effort; repeat ten times) - and man! massive improvements in endurance and strength with comparably little effort.

After CrossFit today (workout was insaaaaaane - '28 circles of Hell: 80 each of high knees, alternating one leg touch jumps; 60 each of jump mountain climbers, alternating woodchop, ab twists, c-sit bicycle abs; 50 each of press ups, wide leg 1/2 burpee, alternating oblique lifts, upright row, bicep curl and press, kettlebell swing, tricep dips, ski abs, alternating squat jump with high-low punch, ski jump hooks; 40 each of clean and press, straight abs, squat and press, bent over row, tuck abs; 30 each of side oblique jumps, spider push ups, push ups with alternating oblique drop, overhead abs; 20 each of get up&jump, alternating lunge and twist, pushup-burpee-jump tuck; do in whatever order you like, for time.)

From earlier this summer. Blanca Peak (14,345 feet). Eight tallest peak in the United States and a bitch of a climb.

This was a pretty heft adventure! Split it over 3 days. Day one is the hike to base camp at Lake Como.

Let us begin!

Now I feel even more inadequate; went running this morning for the first time in what feels like forever, and didn't even make it to the end of the street (I'm not even going to try and salvage any pride by trying to say it was a long one. It's pretty damn sad in any case.

However, I've been really awake since 8:30 AM. So there's that.

Well yes, but I love it and I plan to wean myself off them but I'm going sugar first and then soda will go completely. It's the only thing I can drink for caffeine right now anyway. Sugar free Rockstar is a ways off for me yet.

I have a friend who's trying to get me to sign up for the Warrior Dash (http://www.warriordash.com/) for next year. I probably will! Eek!

My partner does a bunch of Warrior Dashes. Lots of fun and mud.

ALSO - just get off soft drinks, full stop, just go cold turkey and deal with the week of headaches. They are rotting your body, your teeth and your panceras, get onto the sweet, sweet water. It is a tremendous fitness step to make and well worth simply making the step to.

Today's planned workout is: 25 Squat Kicks using 50lb plate, 25 Side Lunges each side, 25 Squat Jumps using 50lb plate, 25 Reverse Grip Pull Ups, 25 Rows with surfer pop up (every 5 pop down and up) using 50lb plate, 50 Rotational Wood Chops 25 Per Side w/50lb plate, 25 Monkey Push Ups, 25 Froggies, 4 Elbow to Knee to 4 Opposite Knee to 4 Elbow Aligator with elevated ab hold, 25 Back Farts, 25 Scissors, 25 Plank Pulse, 30 Toe Touches 5 Per Side, 25 Jump Arounds, 25 Dive Bombers.

I would much rather have some of the bacon butternut chocolate chili in the crockpot and watch Atonement but with a bit of vacation looming around the corner, I've got to get in some solid workouts before I lounge about like a bum. :(

I actually did a modified version of this workout today - 25 seconds of each exercise with 10 seconds of rest in between - and filmed it; alas, I got to the end of it and realized my webcam had not actually turned on, and because I was doing it after a particularly soulcrushing WOD at the CrossFit box, I couldn't bear to do it again. Just didn't have the steam. I'll try again tomorrow! :D

Said workout (took me over forty minutes and involved a lot of heavy lifting) left me like this:

http://i13.photobucket.com/albums/a266/lizmclellan/sweatbabysweat.jpg

Since I'll be travelling non-stop for a few months in about 9 days time, I'm really trying to get in some good workouts and eat well (such a huge part of fitness.) My brother (he's a personal trainer and nutritional counselor by day) has been helping me out by analyzing my logs. Today looked like this:

http://i13.photobucket.com/albums/a266/lizmclellan/coffeestart.jpghttp://i13.photobucket.com/albums/a266/lizmclellan/breakfastcakeandgrapes.jpghttp://i13.photobucket.com/albums/a266/lizmclellan/lunch-2.jpghttp://i13.photobucket.com/albums/a266/lizmclellan/chili.jpghttp://i13.photobucket.com/albums/a266/lizmclellan/dessert1.jpghttp://i13.photobucket.com/albums/a266/lizmclellan/choc.jpg

Woke up at half-past 4 to ride the horses, then stopped at about half-past 5 for a cup of coffee and some Tylenol (been waking up with terrible headaches all week, ugh.)

Breakfast at 8: a bunch of grapes and a MASSIVE piece of coconut-flour apple spice bread (no sugar) with grassfed butter and almond butter. I couldn't finish the last few bites because it was pretty dense. Also, more coffee.

(mid-morning I had a jalapeno pepper stuffed with a piece of fresh parmigiana and a bit of prosciutto; inhaled too quickly to take photographic evidence.)

Lunch: organic baby kale topped with leftover curried kabocha squash and chicken. This was actually stewed in coconut milk but I drained it because for some reason I couldn't stand the idea of slurping up the broth. It was so much better on salad like this.

Dinner: A bowl of chili made with grassfed beef & homecured boar-bacon. Celery for crunch factor and also because I fucking love celery, some salsa because it needs to be used up. This was right after the brutal workout so I was pretty lazy and just needed food ASAP.

Dessert: Apple slices and cinnamon. And wine. Mmm, wine. This wasn't enough so I also had a block of unsweetened baking chocolate.

I need to fit in MORE FOOD apparently, which is hard to do because I eat so slowly, but I'm desperately trying to use up what's in the deep freezer so there will be a lot of cooking going on in the next week and hopefully that will inspire some heavy nomming.

Hoo-rah. Another two 14ers down....only 34 to go...

Anywho, the endeavors this time around were Kit Carson Peak and Challenger Point.

This ended up being a 2-day expedition with four of us hiking up to base camp at about 12,000 feet near the shores of a really cool lake. Tons of wildlife up there. Mule deer and bighorn sheep were just strolling through our campsite.

For the trip my regular climbing partner and I split off from the other two and went a non-standard route. We chose the North Ridge, which is a very difficult class 4 route with a TON of exposure. We also hit some class 5 along our route and there was a short stretch that I was worried about falling the 1200 feet down the north face of the mountain.

From Kit Carson we would scale down the east side, link up with the main trail, and traverse across the ridge to Challenger Ponit.

Challenger Point is an interesting peak and named in memory of the Challenge Space Shuttle victims. There is another mountain nearby call Columbia Point in honor of the Columbia Space Shuttle victims (we didn't summit this one).

Anywho, here are some photos:

And so begins our journey:

http://i10.photobucket.com/albums/a105/Hockeyman506/Kit%20Carson%20and%20Challenger/KitCarsonandChallenger001.jpg

No this isn't either of the two mountains we climbed.....this one is waaaaaaaay too short. Kit Carson and Challenger are way around back behind this one.

http://i10.photobucket.com/albums/a105/Hockeyman506/Kit%20Carson%20and%20Challenger/KitCarsonandChallenger002.jpg

Very narrow route, but there is a trail to follow

http://i10.photobucket.com/albums/a105/Hockeyman506/Kit%20Carson%20and%20Challenger/KitCarsonandChallenger021.jpg

I love the mountains in this region. Very narly looking

Waaaaaaaaaay back down the valley. We started in the lowlands that you can barely see in the background.

http://i10.photobucket.com/albums/a105/Hockeyman506/Kit%20Carson%20and%20Challenger/KitCarsonandChallenger045.jpg

We had about an 800 foot headwall of rock to climb before we hit the upper basin where the lake was.

http://i10.photobucket.com/albums/a105/Hockeyman506/Kit%20Carson%20and%20Challenger/KitCarsonandChallenger057.jpg

http://i10.photobucket.com/albums/a105/Hockeyman506/Kit%20Carson%20and%20Challenger/KitCarsonandChallenger053.jpg

We found a glacial scrape! Holy crap these geological formations are very, very difficult to find. It is really cool that we managed to get a shot of this!

http://i10.photobucket.com/albums/a105/Hockeyman506/Kit%20Carson%20and%20Challenger/KitCarsonandChallenger061.jpg

So of course I had to do push-ups right next to it....yes that is a 50+ pound pack I'm wearing.......I was also able to do diamond push-ups which really surprised the hell out of me.

I guess I'm not as out-of-shape as I thought.

One really cool thing about this mountain range. The entire set are called "Sangre de Cristo" or "Blood of Christ". Here's why.

And the best example I have!

http://i10.photobucket.com/albums/a105/Hockeyman506/Kit%20Carson%20and%20Challenger/KitCarsonandChallenger088.jpg

Right at sunset for about 10-15 minutes the entire mountain range turns blood-red.

Finally back on the repaired bike after a huge crash in March - a fair bit of permanent damage in my left hand that required a *lot* of gym time to gain back strength. And I still have less use than I would like of it.

Pity because the week before I was pulling 38kph averages over 2 hours, which is serious cycle pace.

Late August I got back on the old MTB, hardened the body for riding, then began to time myself - 1:40:34 over my usual course.

A bunch of shit crossfit crap (to do changeover training, you do not want to get yoru body used to just one exercise) and this evening burnt through the course in 1:19:00. Got another 10 minutes to cut from that time but well and truly back into cycling once again and startign to pull 70+kms a day.

Yessssss more CrossFit love :dance I've been pretty relaxed with my fitness while traveling. I'm walking a lot every day and about every other night I try to do a quick HIIT session in the evenings, setting my interval timer for between 12 and 18 minutes and going at max intensity during the work intervals. I've managed to get in a few runs a week and in Naples and Venice I went to the local CrossFit boxes for a WOD. Tonight in Zurich I'll be going to CF before I get to my apartment and then on Sunday I'm going hiking with some Bavarian friends in the Alps. This is much less conscientious than I normally am and it'S really good for me to get out of a strictly regimented mindset; and it's working, too, because my jeans and skirt are loose without having any intentions of toning up!

I did some kinect dancing today with my kids. I need to get back into the gym. It's just crossing the threshold for the first time is the big hurdle. I'm embarrassed its been so long - I still have a Ballys card and they were bought by LA Fitness like a year ago. Still haven't been in to switch to a new card.

I know the people there don't really care but I'm still sort of mortified, lol. Plus Ty working just about non stop means getting out has been impossible.

Anyway, I'm at 176 and I want to be 140-135, so I need to lose at least thirty five pounds. That's 23.3% of weight lost. I'm basically walking around with enough extra weight to make another small child. :x

http://www.fitwatch.com/qkcalc/calculate-weight-loss-percentage.html weight loss percentage calculator

Edit: if I try losing two pounds a week I'll be at goal in 17 weeks/under five months. Should we do a five month contest and see who can lose the biggest percentage of their body weight? For us fatties that need to lose more than twenty pounds. We should do some sort of reward (beside being skinny), like everyone puts twenty bucks in and the winner gets all of it?

Edit edit: we would also need to bite the bullet and post before pictures (you wouldn't have to include your face) so when were all svelte we can take after pictures.

Edit3: I am using my fitnesspal to track my weight and calories (well, I WILL be) and if others do we can friend up and keep an eye on each other. :uhoh

Eh, I'm not keen on putting money into a pot to be honest, and I doubt I'll be putting up before pictures.

My intentions for now are just to put out my workout schedule, weekly weight and gain stats, and goals for a certain date. If folks want to do a contest that's fine, but I would most likely bow out of that aspect of it and just keep to posting up progress reports for encouragement/whip-cracking.

I've been working adding weight but I'm going to stop when I hit 205~210 and aim for 12% body fat at 200 while being hella strong. Right now I'm at 195 and about 17-18% if those resistance meters are worth a spit. I don't exactly carry a lot of fat on my legs, arms and chest as it's all pretty much on mah butt and stomach, and the slim jeans that used to be a bit loose are way tighter around my thighs. Also, I don't really fit in medium shirts any more. They're small around the chest and shoulders.

I don't look like a spindly kid anymore. It's about time! I'm 30 now :hurr

Basically this year I need to hit the gym harder, eat, and do more cardio.

And to be honest, that's exactly the right thing to do. "Competitions" are just asking for in a year's time being back to where you were - setting realistic goals, coming up with a workable exercise and eating plan etc and sticking to it is what you do. It changing fitness and good eating from a resolution to a life style. Just simple things like walking to the shops or taking the stairs rather than the escalator also help.

Also, dont set a start date. Just do it.

You dont need gyms(*), you ESPECIALLY dont need fad programs. You just need to say not watch TV, go for a walk in whatever weather. It really does make a difference.

(*) While you dont need gyms one thing that is proven to work fast is not doign hours of stationary cardio but go for free weights. free weights are brilliant for fat burn and making you look good. Girls, you will NOT hulk out if you do weights, believe me. Avoid the machines too - free weights work on more muscles at one time which means bigger calorie burn.

I've hit one of my goals in doing enough daily kms on the bike to justify a carbon fibre superbike (50-75kms a day) the next one is to get my weight back to 76 kg (Present 81-82kgs). The super bike is an example of a good goal technique - earn somethign you want. It's a positive reinforcement.

I cant stress this one enough tho - Just do SOMETHING. Walk. Sex. Dont care. Do it and enjoy it!

Some of us like games and competitions :airquotes

I don't disagree with anything you've said, but a bit of friendly competition isn't a bad thing it's just good natured pushing each other towards meeting goals as a team.

I was thinking of making something that I'm already doing a bit more fun and collaborative with others who have similar goals and use that as a positive reinforcement. Each one of us have goals, plans and intended rewards if we meet those plans. What's the harm in helping each other achieve those goals in the form of a game/competition? Some people enter races to keep them motivated and training to meet there goals. Just because someone wants to use the form of a competition doesn't mean one year from now they are destined to be back at square one.

Support and help I can do, don't make any mistake about that. But what I am most keen to see is everyone take the right attitude first and that to me is what is important. After you set the correct grounding on what you want to do then a bit of competition wont hurt.

But I cant stress this enough - You MUST get the basics right first. You MUST realize this isn't a fad, this is a lifestyle decision, it starts with the first step out the door and the truth be told it does not stop.

I have over a looooong period of time done fitness threads here - I think everyone now knows exactly the kind of riding I do to stay fit. I'm now 43, going on 44 - and what has happened is that I've quite clearly gone against the family genetic pre-disposition to be fat and diabetic. Most other men of my age are struggling to return to the gym for the first time in 15 years, I never stopped since I decided enough was enough. I'm even nearing once again the fitness level I was when I was 38 - and I was FIT. I did 41 kms on the bike today in good time approaching the kinds of averages I did as well. I only stopped last year due to a huge bike crash that broke my left hand quite badly. Actually part of that hand never recovered at all.

As a result of that enforced layoff, I am still carrying some stomach - but you should see my legs. Wooooo wee they be muscled and my ass is smoking hot :D

But in the end I'm not anything special. I just simply laid the platform and made the changes that needed to be made, I found the time to stay fit. And I'm VERY much here to urge you all on and whatever you decide is the best fitness plan - make the lifestyle changes and do the first things right. It becomes easier if you do.

So a couple of things everyone I can suggest to do -

1) Stop drinking any sugary drinks. If you HAVE to have soft drink, make it diet and do not drink litre of it. Limit one can a day. Water is a GOOD thing!

2) No chips - either packet or fried.

3) Chocolate is actually a good thing. Dont scarf it but it's not somethign you have to be too worried over. Dark Chocolate is good

4) Alcohol. It's preferable to limit it.

5) Exercise to begin with three times a week.

To clarify, I wasn't saying to not do a competition. If some people want to that is certainly fine; like Mu said, friendly competition is fun, and for some that is a good motivating factor.

I enjoy P90X, Mark does not. That doesn't mean I'm going to not do it :)

By all means get a contest going, I was just stating that I'd join in on the workout aspect and not the competition.

Rather than a weight goal, I'm concentrating on eating a clean, healthful diet and nourishing my body in a way that supports the athletic pursuits that make me happy.

I'm incredibly reluctant to start tracking calories, simply because when I play that game I tend to get obsessive and needlessly spiral into an unhealthy cortisol reaction. However, if I don't monitor myself I will undereat by default simply because I become satiated easily. Just plugged in my stats today out of curiosity (I'm a bit hungry but not hungry enough to eat his late; I'd rather wait until breakfast) and it's only a little over 1000 calories, which isn't nearly enough.

Granted, there's probably some errant calories that aren't being counted but even if that number is a couple hundred, it's still not enough food. Not sure how to improve this while eating the way I prefer to - whole foods, lots of locally sourced, seasonal veg, healthy fats, grassfed meats (locally sourced when possible) - beyond shoving more avocado and other nutrient dense components into my meals? There's no way I can increase the volume of food, I'm stuffing my face as it is and hate that uncomfortable feeling that comes with eating too much.

Had a session with the physio guy today for my shoulder; lots of scar tissue buildup, some AC damage, rotator cuff impingement, and run of the mill musculoskeletal misalignment down my back due to poor referral posture from the shoulder's positioning. We treated it today with some bizarre electrotherapy machine and some surface massage to alleviate some of the vascular issues (my hand doesn't feel so cold anymore, hurrah!) and will do some more intensive work on Monday.

The therapist said 'it will be sore and weak, since we're essentially damaging it to fix it' and warned me a few times that it was going to start hurting... boy, he wasn't kidding! It felt absolutely fantastic immediately after the session but now, out of the blue, it is raging like the fires of Mordor.

Heavy lifting and bodyweight exercises are off limits right now (:cry), but by virtue of being a skinflint and not wanting to pay the £2 bus fare, I walked home from the clinic. It only took about an hour and it was lovely, with some fantastic hills and fields that made it a great little hike.

Just to be safe, I'm not going to run for a few days, either, as I doubt the motion will be good for recovery. Any suggestions for exercise routines that won't slay shoulder progress are greatly appreciated!

Thursday is usually my heaviest day - but still managed to stay below 82 kgs even after realising I wasnt eating enough and went hog wild on the sausages and chicken. 53.32 km on the kike - felt quite good but I suspect some of that was that I had fuel to burn, rather than draining reserves.

Shoe broke. Not a good thing for a SPD equipped bike. Thankfully I'm about to renew my equipment soon...... still 31.2 kms.

ALSO.....

Please dont watch Biggest Loser. The weight loss and what they advocate are extremely bad for you. The weight loss isnt real either - there's a HELL of a lot of weight loss via water that is very VERY bad for you. Plus they encourage the kind of weight loss that is known to be dangerous for you - like one episode had a contestant who was bagged out for "only" losing 5.4 kgs between weekly weigh ins - this is very VERY wrong as that's almost certainly just water. A healthy weight loss is MAXIMUM a kg a week.

It also builds highly unrealistic expectations on yourself and encourages binge exercise.

If you want to be inspired, visit SA's Ultimate Transformations thread in You Look Like Shit - it's one of the best things goign too with lots of good advice and before / after's that are mind blowing. Plus you will notice all of them adhere to the real basics of weight loss - changing lifestyle / food / exercise and a good proper weight loss that is sustainable.

Or some guys get Chris Hemsworth muscley.

I'm not being an asshole, believe it or not. I'm just saying why you should be VERY leery of Biggest Loser as it honestly has a lot of utter bullshit and the kind of weight loss that does put people in hospital - and has on several occasions on that show. And not exhaustion but heart and kidney near failures.

Put the fact that seeing a show host get stuck into a poor woman for "only" losing 5 kgs in a week really gets on my goat as a) she busted her ass to do that and b) thats VERY dangerous to lose that much as your kidneys especially are stressed due to dehydration.

So yeah, be leery. They are promoting the kind of weight loss that is not a fad but is actually dangerous.

Hydration is so incredibly important - I tend to lose up to 2 litres over 56.26 kms, 1 litre I'll drink during the ride and the other litre I'll throw down afterwards. I weighed in at 81.4 when I got in, I'm now 82.1 which means I've drunk enough. I've also noted in the last month my metabolism is burning faster for longer so eating more calories isnt a bad thing.

I really need to eat better tho. I eat so much shit -_-

I understand that behind the scenes TBL is not the greatest way to lose weight but watching Jillian yell at people is sort of entertaining. Plus Bob is the best. :3: I do wish there was an 'a day at the ranch' thing which just showed what a contestant does for one entire day.

Anyway.

I weighed again this morning and was 166.6 :eee

ALSO I have a college friend coming into town in May for the Rock 'N Roll half marathon and she wants me to run it with her! Really the only thing holding me back is the entrance fee. :ohno

Could use that as incentive to actually DO it...since there aren't any refunds :)

I'll be running the Dallas one in March!

I've been a bit under the weather since last Thursday. Massive chest congestion and breathing problems, so I wasn't about to do any running or whatnot; last thing I need to do is asphyxiate myself trying to get fit. Right now I'm in the 'cough-up green and red mucus' stage. Strange thing about it, I've not had any sinus troubles at all. I know I'm stopped up pretty badly all throughout the noggin since I can't hear as well as normal, but it's not leaking through my nose yet and seems perfectly happy to fester in my chest.

I should be functioning properly beginning next week.

If your chest congestion doesn't start clearing up soon check with a doctor. You don't need to be walking around with bronchitis or pneumonia :(

UGH... I didn't know it was that expensive. I got in on a much cheaper price and an extra discount. I think mine was $60.

I am signed up for the May 19th half marathon, thanks to my generous friend who is sponsoring me. With that in mind I have switched from the elliptical to the treadmill, and wow, it's a lot different. My hips are super tight and sore when I move, I can barely walk and I'm questioning my life choices, lol.

Tomorrow is a no exercise at all day, so hopefully that will help.

I am going to do the stripped 5x5 for weight days, which will be MWF or TThS, I'm not sure which yet. The other days will be running/trying to run at the track around the golf course. One or two rest days I'm not sure which yet.

So I ran 5K today. For the first time ever. Didn't even plan to, I was pretty sure I'd run only a little bit more than last Saturday. But damn.

And somehow I'm not sore? Maybe it's super-DOMS? :lol

At least now it makes the 7K my friend did today seem a little more reasonable and a lot less outrageous.

225x5 275x5 295x2 is a bit under what I was doing 2 weeks ago but I'm still snotty and I'd rather not push as my body bites back hard when it's not ready (I will get sick again). Gonna push harder next week.

Squatted 225x3 instead of x5, felt like I was grinding that last rep out a bit much, didn't close the set out, still not 100%. Knocked it down to 205 and did another 5.

I've had to up the calorie intake to support the amount of riding so I'm just finding a new balance between stuffing my face and burning it off. Which means I'm weight fluctuating until I've rebalanced.

I was going at a 1400 calorie deficit and that's not good - even if I was throwing in 2500 cals, the amount of riding meant a daily calorie burn closer to 4000. Not really good and leading to second day hitting the wall hard. Plus also changing from dieseling pedal technique to cadence technique.

Reset, resume 60 kms a day.

Look at you! Nice! Congrats!

I did something to my left foot. It feels like a nerve...it's just in the arch underneath next to the heel on the outside... hurts to walk. I get sharp pains :( I guess I'm kind of using that as an excuse to try to run.; though I honestly don't know that it would hurt while running because I shouldn't be landing on it or flexing it as much as walking.

I'm supposed to be doing 7 miles this weekend, which clearly hasn't happened. I'm going to attempt it tomorrow after work and see how the foot does. A no excuse attempt. :) I can walk up stairs on the balls of my feet without it hurting at all, so I'm fairly certain running will be okay.

Instead of going to the gym I wolfed down two eggs, half a sweet potato, a banana and1/4 of an avocado. Seriously, it took maybe ten minutes to eat all that?

Whoohoooo! 10 miles...2 hours 9 minutes... I was actually really impressed with the first 5 miles because I was sub 12 min miles. However, I was running WITH the wind. The way back was not so fun. It's like 20 mph wind and the trail is wide open. At the end of my 5 miles and trail I ran into a high school and was kind of excited to do a lap around their track. Quickly regretted it as the track was dirt with a small layer of pebble and it had rained hardcore last night. I managed to put an inch of mud on my shoes. -_-

I will say that my knees were wiped by the end, however they feel AMAZING right now. I wore my older Asics to see if my new shoes were the problem. Not entirely my knee issue, but definitely part of it! Going to return them and get another of the old pair. Helped that I went grocery shopping after the workout, so I walked quite a bit after the cool down. Elevation and ice this evening!

My legs are super sore from doing 100 goblet squats on Saturday (Olivia as the weight while everyone else was watching a movie at the theater and we were in the hallway) but I still managed to run pretty good. Only had to walk because i got a cramp. Ugh. But anyway, two miles with super doms-y legs and weak from no food on Sunday isn't too bad I think. Maybe.

I was running 10 miles in 2:09, so I was hoping to do better, but the conditions stunk. It was 38 degrees with 25 mph winds and I just wasn't fully prepared. Despite a ton of pain meds, my knees hurt like hell, as did my right hip. But I finished, so I consider my first one a win! First of all, I looooooooove Germany. We do so much more walking here.

Been keeping up with CrossFit, ofc, and am taking advantage of the gorgeous farmland here in Hessen. There's a fantastic loop that goes through a forest, then around an old farmhouse and church, then along a river, then through the altstadt (not really but this is what I refer to it as mentally, since the houses are all super old in that neighborhood) and back to my house. It's just under 5 miles and it's so gorgeous that I forget that I'm legging it. Takes under an hour to run, so it's perfect for the mornings, although today I walked around Assenheim and then did the loop in reverse (ending in the forest rather than starting) and it took a couple of hours, woo!

Tomorrow is meant to be a run day but I'm feeling pretty sore so we'll see :D

Haha I haven't worked out in like, two days. Normally when I say this I mean that I haven't done anything intense but will usually have gone for a 3-5 easy miler and done some light (under 15 minutes) bodyweight exercises while cleaning. However, it has literally been two days of meaning to exercise and instead rolling over and sleeping in until 8 and it has been glooooooorious.

Meant to go for a run this morning but it was too cold and we had brunch plans in Frankfurt so that got canceled. I am, however, going to play footie with the guys in an hour so that'll be a couple hours of good running and having fun. Then I'll stretch with some yoga (my goal is to start stretching regularly since I never do it, ever) and finish the night off with a set (maybe two?) of 10 caliente burpees. :)

I read "footsie" rather than footie...to which I was amused and excited for you until I got to the plural of guy... and then I realized I was all sorts of wrong.

Did some measurements today! My weight dropped way down to 156 last week because of being stomach sick and also not really eating for two days. I expected that it was mostly water weight and I guess I was right because this week I've been stuck at 160.4. Easter candy isn't helping, of course (also I'm coming up against the monthly bloat). ;)

Anyway, some silver lining is to be had. First measurements are from January 15, second from today.

Waist: 33" / 29"
Hips: 38.5" / 36"
Neck? Only measured this because its on the MFP progress thing. I can't quite believe there was any change here: 13.5" / 13"
Bust: 32DDD / 30DD (ribs 32" / 30", bust 38" / 35") ((I also stopped nursing in this time frame, so... But before I was a 32DD so there's that, too))

So total of ... 11" gone? About 2" all over. I hope to get some calipers to accurately measure my body fat, per a calculator with tape measurements I've gone from 26% to 21.8%

My belly is still so fat looking though :(

Oh so that's what the inside of a gym looks like - weather has been crap so off to lift iron. 4 months I suppose is a good run for outdoors cycling.

Kinda surprised - with all the cycling I thought I would have lost strength. Turns out I havent, if anything the legs were stronger. I've never been out to hit huge weights but eh, not displeased.

Accidentally ran a 10k after lunch today. It's absolutely GORGEOUS in Assenheim and so my buddy and his buddy decided to go running and we ended up taking a new route, which led to getting lost in a lovely forest and doing some impromptu trail running. It was so lovely but mentally I struggled because I didn't much feel like doing anything but sunbathing today and then wasn't expecting to go for that distance. My left calve was really, really tight and during the last twenty minutes or so my leg was numb with pins and needles - maybe tight muscles restricting blood flow from the lower body weight session I did yesterday? Doesn't feel like a nerve issue and it's completely dissipated now.

Felt fantastic to reach home and ultimately I'm glad we did it without any walking breaks. Still, with such beautiful conditions I wish I'd not had to battle with the ugh-god-please-stop-no-more-kill-me-now thoughts that were clattering about. Running is usually my peace. :(

Haha, the day after ^ I got super sick with the headcold from hell that I actually am beginning to think is allergies.

Yesterday I ran 11.21KM in 1hr1min. Frustrating run because it took me a good 25 minutes to get into the mindset that I could keep going. I actually had to resort to breath rhythm counting on a 3-2 beat in order to quiet down my mind and focus. Once that high set in it was okay but up until that point it was sort of mentally antagonizing.

Today I will probably just do some yoga. And try to sort out why my brain is being so awful - I walked around the grocery store for an hour today with two bananas that I ultimately did not buy because the idea of eating a banana for breakfast with my goats milk yogurt tomorrow made me anxious, since I'll also be eating lunch for sure. My miiiiiiiiiind is so irrational. D=

Allergies suck. It isn't surprising that experiencing spring in a new country would activate yours. Zyrtec is a good allergy medicine that works for mine...you take it once a day and it doesn't make you sleepy. Of course, that works mainly when you're assuming your allergies will be bad for several days.

My longest run so far is 3 miles. Just need to work up to adding ten more onto that in a month. Should I actually try to run/walk 13 miles before the actual race, or just get to like 10?

I kind of really want to do my best (which will probably be suuuuper slow).

Meh, I hate medication. Also am too lazy and afraid to go to a doctor. I will power through it and maybe pick up some echinacea and goldenseal to help ease the symptoms.

I would definitely do the whole 13 miles but the closest I'd do it to the race is maybe a week out, and even that is pushing it. Before I ran the Honolulu Marathon I did a 22 miler, about two weeks before the actual race, and then I tapered off into really short runs (3-6 miles) with multiple rest days in between for the rest of the time leading up to it so that my body was prepared but also rested. :D

Here's (http://boiserunwalk.com/taper-half-marathon.html) a basic tapering guideline!

You don't have to go to the doctor to get over the counter allergy medicine. ;) Non-drowsy is the way to go, though.

Ran five miles last night in a smidge over an hour. Feeling pretty good, though my IT band is a little tight on the left and my right foot feels like it has blisters on my toes but I don't see any blisters. Going to forgo lifting entirely until the half marathon is over, hopefully my gains won't all disappear.

There are some really good articles and ITB exercises out there. Make sure you're doing some sort of leg strengthening (squats, 4 point lunges, etc) to combat runners knee and other injuries! I really wish I had strengthened equally and not worried 100% about distance. Although my weight and doing too much too soon plays a part, not strengthening leg muscles really has hurt my knees. I've not been able to run since my half (the Color Run after was a pitiful attempt...) and descending anything sucks.

Well, I've been squatting weight and dead lifting and basically yes, I've gotten real strong. I just need to at least attempt to condition my body for 13 miles and I only have a month and limited exercise time. I've been doing body weight squats, push ups, reverse lunges and glute bridges nearly every day, as well as heaving up on the old pull up bar.

My arms are getting kinda cut! :o

I've learned a lot about appropriate stretches - IT band, patella femoral, and piriformis are all areas I have problems with but through stretching have virtually eliminated any pain. It's actually really cool.

To celebrate my last day on no-running profile, one of my Sergeants who is also on a no-running profile took me out to the gym and annihilated me with upper body workouts.

Bench press, bar only: sets of 50 40 25 25 15 10 5, adding 10 pounds of weight at the 2nd set of 25. In between sets of this, did skull crushers with a 5 pound weight, switching for 10 on the 2nd set of 25.

THEN, we did pec flys and bench dips in sets of 40, 30, 20, and 10. I hope I named those exercises correctly.

Sunday morning I very slowly jogged about four miles with a friend, knowing I was going to run a 10K with some work colleagues in the evening. That 10K became a surprise 18K with three incredibly challenging inclines and a varied terrain that made the entire thing feel like a slog. I was not mentally prepared for it, though I'm glad we did it and I felt great after!

Yesterday I forced myself to take the day off but it hasn't seemed to help. My hips are so tight - the right one hurts to put much weight on it. Took it easy tonight with jogging 5 minutes, walking 2 for four miles with a friend who is trying to get in shape. My original plan was to do a 14-minute weighted HIIT session after, but I think I'm nixing that to just take it easy. Working all day on my feet certainly didn't help things.

Depending on how it feels tomorrow, I may try and take another rest day or else switch my routine and do an upper body session instead of legs and glutes. And probably no running until the weekend. :(

But! I feel fantastic beyond that. Really optimistic about slowly getting back to where I was before. :D

FINALLY decided I earned a new Carbon Fibre bicycle and could live up to what it offers. Specialized Roubaix Comp so a bit softer and compliant than a S-Works but resonably well specced with Ultegra gears and shifters, 105 brakes. Basically the same frame that is used on the Paris to Roubaix one day cycling classic. An S-Works is a Tour de France frame altho the Roubaix is also switched in when roads are rougher. Carbon Fibre frame, Zertz inserts to absorb road shock, 10 speed rear and midrange high / low front rings. Forks are also CF, wheels are lightweight alloy (Will switch to CF in a few months time, CF seat and post and also a Garmin 510 cycle computer with wireless speed / cadence sensors, GPS positioning, loads of functions and ability to add on power / heart rate monitors.

So I've gone from an old alloy bone rattler (abeit with oldish high end Dura-Ace / Ultegra gear) to a smooth latest tech wonderkid and silly amounts of computing power.

My 40km times dropped by 10 minutes in a week as I got used to it, 288kms in the first 6 days and holy shit, CF bikes really are an eye opener. Also not knocking my body around so I can back up the next day and pull another 50kms. Also the Garmin hooks up to Strava and I've got a few data mining things set to really look at what I'm doing wrong (and right). Analysis of what I'm doing has turned up a few adjustments that just lend for better speed over a longer distance - Now I know what my cadence and actual power outputs are, I have the Garmin set to warn me when I exceed / drop below my chosen thresholds.

Like the fact I'm putting out 150watts average across two hours, but over a five minute period I can do 350w with a minute best of 750watts and an absolute peak of 825 watts. Cadence is averaging 74-75 but flaring to 200+ which is really bad.

Oh but the real fun bit is for some reason when I feel I'm wearing out I get something stuck in my head.

Looks great, Mark. :) When are you going to do a proper race then?

Also, my heels are blistered and painful after yesterday's four miles. From the top edge of my shoe - I tightened the laces across the front and top to keep my feet from sliding forward when going down hills (was getting blisters on the tips of my toes of all things).

ALSO ALSO my shins feel incredibly bruised. Taking the day off to rest, then tomorrow I THINK I'll be doing the whole 13 miles around the track as my confidence booster yes I can do it. Then sunday off and my 'taper' will be just two miles a day until race day which is NEXT SUNDAY.

Not too much longer - the cycling season is offically over for all bar the crazies (like me) but in October there's an event or two - like I'll do the bike leg for a triathlon team or the Alpine Classic which is a one day 240km torturefest in the mountains.

There is a winter race locally which I'm considering as well, but in general if I can get through winter without a break I'll be in very good position to do a bunch of over 40's Masters events and do well. Usually I would have shelved the bike in March like everyone else but not this year.

Not looking forward to the -2C days coming soon :X

At the nine mile mark, where Ty and the kids were energetically cheering me on! Owen loved this, he was amazed by how many people were racing. So was I! Ten thousand runners! At one point in the beginning there is a spot where the race doubled back on the same road and the sound of everyone running was just mind blowing to me.

I did WAY better than I thought I would - official time is 2:51:53. My right foot is one giant blister (one on each toe lol) but my heels were perfect throughout. Left hip seized up a little over half way - probably contributed to my time because it was more painful to walk than it was to run! The very last mile was pure walking, and then of course gear check was at least another mile in the other direction - at least it felt like it.

My first water stop I tried the pinch the cup move and immediately poured it up my nose. D'oh! I got way better at it though. I tracked it via my phone as well, but I turned it on before the race (pre-race jitters) started so the time is off - Nike + thinks I did 13.5 miles in just over 3 hours. Also I did the whole thing on zero caffeine which was NOT the plan but oops, I forgot.

I wouldn't do Tough Mudder, personally. Lots of people enjoy it but there was one recently where a guy drowned in the "jump from high up into muddy water" obstacle. The spotters there let him stay in the water for MINUTES before anyone tried retrieving him. >_< And they make you sign away all your liability for death and injury.

I'd rather do something a little more responsible like the Warrior Dash hahaha. But if you want to be electrocuted while navigating a water obstacle go for it! :lol

When I ran the Honolulu Marathon I had to sign a waiver exempting them from responsibility for any injuries/accidental death, too. Anything intense brings with it an inherent amount of risk. I'd rather do this than skydive, so I suppose this is my little indulgence with danger. ;)

Debating now whether to do the Germany one in July or the Scotland one in August. I think I'm fit enough to do the one in July if I ramp up my training now but if I do August that gives me more time and also fuck yes Scotland, my other other other home. <3

No, Tough Mudder really does have some serious problems. There's more injuries happen at those events than at pretty much any other organized event (and more than they let on) - and really it's just a gimmick in the end. A gimmick where people really do get hurt a lot and the whole thing really is just plain dumb. If I wanted to get electrocuted for "fun" I'd go to the local BDSM dungeon.

That said I am doing a Warrior Dash next weekend. The only reason I even thought about it was we're "SUITING UP!" and yes going as Barney.

F'king awesome effort on the half marathon - That brings back some paaaaaaainful memories but well done.

While that's nothing impressive, I've finally got back into doing ab it of daily exercise (used to run, do some yoga and pilates a couple of years ago).

I have basically ignored my calorie goal for the last two weeks and now am up two pounds. :shakefist I think the mental barrier at 155 is doing me in. I need to break it! There have been some weird hormonal things going on since my half, too, so it's probably water weight/bloat/some actual weight gain, but I need to buckle down and get through it.

Still weighing my options for another half marathon on the 22nd of June. I could commit to it now but I would have to drive myself three hours home after the race and I don't think I'm going to be capable of that! And the hotels in downtown Seattle are like $230 a night so it's REALLY out of our price range to get a hotel room for me and Ty (current option is me sharing with my friend and HER friend who is already going to be there). I think....I think I'm leaning back toward not doing it.

It doesn't feel like it's just been a week since I ran a half marathon, it feels much longer, lol!
