I'm sat watching Going Postal thanks to the wonders of Virgin's TV On Demand service. It's the second Terry Pratchett adaptation that I've seen (the other being the Hogfather), and I'm thoroughly enjoying it.

People keep recommending that I read Terry Pratchett, but I have absolutely no idea of where to start. What is the best example of Pratchett's writing - which book stands the best chance of getting me hooked, and making me want to read everything else?

Aside: Speaking of Going Postal... how bloody awesome is this adaptation? David Suchet makes a magnificent villain, and the golem rights lady is both sexy and terrifying. :ohno

Here's a spiffy guide to which books relate to which other books and what order you should read them in, to make sure you don't go and spoil yourself about something or other (although really it's more like confusing yourself than spoiling): http://www.lspace.org/books/reading-order-guides/the-discworld-reading-order-guide-20.jpg

I would recommend starting with Guards! Guards! or Mort.

Just in case you want a peek at it, here's the Discworld on TV thread (http://sw-fans.net/forum/showthread.php?t=15731) :D oh and our thread where we tried to cast actors as Discworld characters (http://sw-fans.net/forum/showthread.php?t=18084) ^_^;

I read Terry Pratchett's Discworld in order of publication (or as it appears on the inside of the book). I always recommend Color of Magic/Light Fantastic as the books to start with. It can only get better from there.

I would normally not recommend The Colour of Magic as a starting point, tbh. It's a good book but for someone just getting into Pratchett for the first time, I think the Watch/Death novels are a better indication of the style and quality that you can expect from Pratchett.

If you do want to go in order of publication, however, here's all the novels in order: http://wiki.lspace.org/wiki/Bibliography#Novels

I would quite like to cast Claire Foy as my girlfriend, please. ^_^;

Sounds like a plan!

Now all we need is a Hollywood billionaire who is willing to make a Jenny & Jace version of the Truman Show... :uhoh

That reminds me. I was sitting at my desk, at work, the other day and started humming "Glen and the Elfs, excellent adventures!"

That all depends on your custody agreement.

Custody? Does that mean there are handcuffs involved?

I've only really read the Watch novels, and they're awesome so there's that for what it's worth :)

If I had an actual paper copy of Guards Guards I'd posted it to you, Jace. Sadly I cannot find my Pratchett books anywhere, with the exception of Fifth Element and you aren't having that :love
