It's (almost) a new year, so here's a new Steam deals thread! The holiday sale is on at the moment, so there's no better time to splurge your $$$ on games.

66% off Sonic Generations today. Worth it for anyone who looks back fondly on playing Sonic 1 & 2 in their younger days :)

Bastion is also 66% and a great game so go buy it.

I got both of them. Had my eye on Bastion for a while now, and I just love Sonic! I just bought my fiancée a Nintendo DS Sonic mega collection thingy with 1, 2, 3 and S&K on it.

New deals are up, the Gothic pack is pretty sweet! Cities In Motion also has me tempted.

Terraria is once again on offer. Seriously, I cannot recommend that game highly enough. I only bought it because it was on offer at the time but I'm so glad that I did. For people who enjoyed Minecraft but were frustrated by a lack of palpable progression or challenge, this game has both. A very large number of enemies and plenty of lootable and craftable weapons, armour and tools, plus it supports multiplayer with (at least) 8 players but I think the max is somthing crazy like 256 players.

It has boss fights, different biomes to explore, and in the recent content update it now allows you to kinda enchant your equipment for a fee to make weapons hit faster or do more damage etc.

Buy it! Only £1.49 or a 4-pack is £4.49!

I keep forgetting to check the Steam deals. >_<

If Skyrim winds up on offer at any point, could someone let me know? I want to jump on the Dovakin bandwagon, but I can't really justify the £35 pricetag at the moment. :\

Edit:

Today seems to be Sonic Weekend! http://store.steampowered.com/sale/Sonic_Weekend (http://store.steampowered.com/search/?specials=1)

Very good game if you like city building. While the game has depth and complexity, its quite easy to play, just be sure to do the tutorials and after that the maps are really nice to look at. You basically get a planet with loads of city sites to build on. Each map has its own natural resources such as arable land, oil and ground water. And though separate cities, they are all linked via trade. So if you have a city with plenty of farms you can export that excess food to another of your cities needing it. This could be for cash or another resource in demand - all those farms may not have left room for heavy industry so if you dont have a coty with that commodity in excess, start a new. Ity amd rhrow down those heavy industrial zones.

The freedom of zone placement and road direction/shape allows for sone really nice urban planning. I like having long curved roads round a lake for my elite citizens, with plenty of trees.

You just have to be more methodical and patient with enemies - even the seemingly puny ones you initially encounter. But its got a solid fighting system with combat mechanics that are very responsive and visceral.

For instance you can to a reposte if you time it perfectly - deflecting a blow with your shield rather than just blocking it, opening the enemy up for a massive counter-attack. But miss the timing and you're wide open yourself. I'm always too much of a shithouse to try it and just keep my guard up until there's an opportunity to lay in a few sneaky blows (which there usually is since I favour the uchigatana which is a very fast-swinging samurai sword with very good reach).

I prefer a sansetsukon - it's a slow-swinging weapon with very good flexibility. We should spar some time, Peter.

For those who don't use GOG.com, System Shock 2 is now available on Steam and a currently reduced price of £4.89 - 30% off. That makes it slightly cheaper than on GOG.com ($9.99 or £6.50), but the normal price of £6.99 will be 50p more. Not much difference really but still, SS2 FTW!!!!!

And by the way, if you haven't already then please check out my youtube channel at youtube.com/superego13itch where you can watch as I fearfully explore the Von Braun myself and shriek like a pansy at the sight of chimpanzees.

Baldur's gate: Enhanced Edition is 75% off for the Midweek Madness but I'd advise against getting it. Sleeping Dogs is a great open-world action game set in Hong Kong which just oozes John Woo's cinematic style, and KOTOR 2 is one of the best Star Wars videogames out there along with the first game with a fantastic story and some great writing courtesy of Obsidian Entertainment (Chris Avellone).

Recommended Buys: Possibly the best day so far! Oblivion, Dragon Age: Origins and The Witcher 2 are all solid RPG's with tonnes of content to last many many weeks. And if Oblivion interests you, I'd recommend splashing out a tad more on the Deluxe Edition. Crusader Kings 2 is a great grand-strategy game from Paradox. Rogue Legacy is a fun rogue-like RPG-platformer with quirky features. The reviews have so far put me off, but a -80% price has me tempted by Tomb Raider. The Max Payne series is a solid action-shooter and while I haven't played it yet I expect Max Payne 3 to be just a great as the first two games. The other two games, I'm sorry to say I know nothing about.

Rocksmith 2014 -33% | £26.79/$40.19
Surgeon Simulator 2013 -75% | £1.74/$2.49

Recommended Buys: State of Decay is a great XBOX Live Arcade title that got ported to PC. Now with keyboard and mouse support as well as the use of an XBOX360 controller, it's a fun zombie apocalypse survival sim where you have to scavenge for food and medical supplies as well as the trials and tribulations of people management when your camp isn't a happy one, all while staying one step ahead of the growing ravenous hordes of undead prowling the streets. Baldur's Gate is a fantastic AD&D RPG from Bioware-Interplay with great characters and writing and some awesome-looking spellcasting. And with an alignment system where you choose at character creation whether to be Good or Bad, Lawful or Chaotic, or some mixture in-between, it proves for some interesting social interactions and companion options, as well as repeat playthroughs. Plenty of gameplay to be had here! FTL is a fun indie rogue-like spaceship management game which requires you to command a crew and balance power requirements of various systems while exploring a randomly-generated star-system which can have you run into various combat encounters as well as things such as hazardous asteroid fields, stars undergoing supernova, slavers, mercenaries, ambushes, abandoned stations, lost civilisations and more. The action always stays on your ship with dialogue boxes giving flavour text and details about other actions, but it's the tension of the ship-to-ship combat that really shines. Clever tactics such as using ion cannons to cut off the enemy's oxygen supply until the crew suffocate will allow you to obtain more scrap (used for upgrades and purchases) than if you destroy them outright, although an array of lasers and missiles can win a fight just as effectively, but you won't feel as proud of such outcomes. I kinda rambled about that one, but it's just a superb indie game! Finally, though it's not for everyone since it's not really a game, creative-types might find RPG Maker interesting. From what I've seen, it's a very powerful game development kit with plenty of DLC adding new art assets to make almost any kind of RPG game you want.

Deus Ex: Human Revolution - Director's Cut -75% | £3.24/$4.99

Recommended Buys: A -75% saving on Skyrim returns from one of Day 5's Flash Sales. I'd have thought most of us here would have this by now but if not, you cannot go wrong with this awesome Bethesda RPG at such a great price. Also, Terraria is a great indie procedurally-generated sandbox-survival game with MetroidVania gameplay elements. You may have seen the Early Access for Starbound on Steam - if you're curious about Starbound, check out Terraria to get a taste of the gameplay you'll encounter in Starbound (though I must stress how great Terraria is in it's own right!). Again, Deus Ex returns from Day 3's Flash Sale at the same -75% price - again, this is a superb RPG with a very well-realised world and plenty of nooks and crannies to go poking around in if you're the explorer-type and like to see what lies either side of the main quest-line. Finally, I have to sing the praises of Europa Universalis IV - a game I've only recently fell in love with. A grand strategy game from Paradox which lets you play as pretty much any country ever from 1444 up to the 1800's. With various starting points, you can lead your chosen nation to greatness as you forge alliances, commit to royal marriages to secure your throne's succession, establish trade routes across the globe, colonise the New World, oversee religious harmony throughout your provinces or simply wage war on all fronts in an attempt to annex all those who would stand between you and world domination. Interesting, varied game mechanics keep things active all the time and tough choices need to be made beyond what to build and who to attack. Will you choose to lead one of Europe's powerhouses such as England or France, or one of the lesser, smaller countries and try to grow your power? Though the entire globe is explorable, the game can be as small or as big as you like depending on your ambitions (and who you ally with or piss off!) Check it out!

DmC: Devil May Cry -75% | £7.49/$12.49
Anno 2070 -75% | £4.99/$7.49

Recommended Buys: Hotline Miami is a retro-style action game with a focus on melee and firearm combat. Basically in each level you have to kill everyone. Levels comprise of various rooms and often multiple floors, and enemies are dispersed throughout. The trick is to proceed through the levels effectively by picking the enemies off one by one as much as possible, since it's easy to get overwhelmed and usually a single hit will kill you. But the same goes for your own attacks, and even if your hit only knocks them out, you can finish them off while they're down. It sounds simple, but the game oozes style, with a killer techno 80's soundtrack and a setting of late 80's Miami. The story evolves over time between missions as you travel around the city, visiting clubs, stop off for pizza and visit the video store (VHS!!!). And then there's the three mysterious masked strangers who you seem to see in your dreams. Dark Souls is a brilliant and punishing action RPG requiring patience and understanding to succeed in. Even the simplest of enemies is capable of killing you in a few hits if you are careless, even when you're of high level. It's all about understanding your enemy and timing your attacks to land when their defense is down. The world is Lordran - a land filled with undead and demons and beasts - dragons too! As well as some truly strange-looking foes! Whether magic, miracles, or cold steel, you must cut through the numerous enemies as you grow in power via the souls obtained through your fallen enemies. Souls are also a currency for purchasing items such as weapons and armour or upgrades for them. Be sure to Google the small fan-fix which unlocks the higher resolutions (unles the game has now been patched!). Finally, Killing Floor is a darker, Counter-Strike-like alternative to Left 4 Dead as you and your friends play as mercenaries in a London overrun by demons and the undead. Earn cash through kills to spend at the weapons dealer between rounds to purchase better guns and gear, and see how long you can last. There's plenty of optional DLC too if that's your thing.

Worthy mentions are Devil May Cry, Anno 2070 and Gone Home, though I've not played any of them but have heard good things.

This was another Steam sale when I didn't pick up too much. I am trying to be more selective in what I buy, and skipped a few arguably solid deals, settling on 'The Wolf Among Us' as my Christmas pick.

What about everyone else? Anything you bought that you've been playing over the holiday period?

Park Kraken

Not really. I picked up a little bit here and there but by far I was buying things for other people's wishlists when it went on sale. A friend bought me Leviathan Warships which has been a fun play, both single and co-op.

Just for those who missed it, the Steam Summer Sale is on early this year.

Park Kraken

Okay so I've decided this year that I'm only going to buy games that either genuinely pique my interest or that friends want and so far I've managed to find one that I've purchased that fits both categories and that would be "Banished" at -50% for 9.99$. I'm curious to see how this game compares to previous Anno settlement titles (1503, 1602, etc.).

Peter McCoy
Jun 21st, 2014, 05:11:57 PM
As I understand it's quite a different game in the sense that you're essentially managing a community as opposed to building a settlement. The goal is to have your community survive. Crops cannot grow during winter, so you have to stock up enough supplies to last until spring when you can plant anew. Skills and technology are brought in by travellers who journey form afar to join your community, but letting them in risks disease if they bring germs with them. Your community grows when your people have children and those children live long enough to grow up and become productive.

And it was made by a single guy!

Peter McCoy

Although it's not directly a Steam Sale, you do get a game on Steam in it.

https://www.humblebundle.com/

The Humble Jumbo Bundle 3 is currently available. And if you pay $12 or more (about £7.53) you get Saints Row IV - which is currently £16.99 on Steam anyway.

So for less than the cost of Saints Row IV on Steam, you're getting Saints Row IV on Steam plus a selection of games too. Take them or leave them, but £7.53 is a bargain for this shitfaced-off-it's-tits open-world mayhem-a-thon.

Peter McCoy

30 hours to go for this seemingly unwarranted Steam Sale. However there's one title I'd like to highlight...

Alien: Isolation (http://store.steampowered.com/app/214490/)

Currently available at 50% off, that's £15.99 for the UK and $24.99 for the US

Also on the same page you can grab the Season Pass for half-price as well. This grants you 5 DLC's in total from now to March when the fifth will be released. Grabbing the Season Pass now will be a huge saving since the DLC's individually at full price would amount to $40 or £28. Right now they're $14.99 or £9.99. There are two DLC's out for the moment - "Corporate Lockdown" and "Trauma" - these are new areas designed for Survivor Mode where the chief goal is to complete a set number of objectives in as short a time as possible, for competing on the Leaderboards online. Once you've completed the single-player campaign, playing through it again is enjoyable, but since you know what to expect it does make things a bit easier and calmer - though I still find it tense as fuck! But these Survivor levels let you jump straight into some action in areas you're not familiar with, allowing for some variety if you want to play the game but have grown somewhat tired of the single-player story.

I'd absolutely love some form of co-op in this game. It'd be awesome if there was a two-player mode where only one player has a motion tracker and only one has a flamethrower, and there are situations that require you to split up. Voice-comms would be essential since each player can keep the other informed of the aliens whereabouts. it could even be designed so that areas are incredibly difficult to traverse/work in when the alien is present, so that when one player knows the bastard is nearby, they can inform their mate to go while the going's good.

Anyway, yeah! Alien: Isolation - half-price. Go on Droo and Charley - you both know you want to!

This isn't a sale, but it's probably the first game I've felt an honest desire to play straight off since The Banner Saga (and that didn't last long, though that's due to the fact that I don't have weekends really anymore).

Elegy for a Dead World (http://store.steampowered.com/app/252290/?snr=1_7_7_popularnew_150_3) is a game about writing fiction. In it we explore three worlds based off the works of poets Byron, Yeats, and Shelley, and write either based on prompts or free form about it. Yes, exploring three worlds based off of Byron, Yeats, and Shelley seems a bit pretentious, at least I think so, but the real draw is that you can share your writing on the Steam Workshop and read others' own interpretations of the same exact setting and scene.

I can only imagine some of the stories that are out there right now. And my first thought was how I'd write it with Ben as the explorer. It's 14.99 USD, so maybe we'll get lucky and a sale will come and drop its price a bit lower. 15 dollars isn't expensive, but I'm also pinching enough pennies that I'd have a hard time justifying it to myself, no matter how interesting it looks or how good some of the stories must be.

Not really a Steam Sale as such, but it is a sale that nets you Steam keys...

www.bundlestars.com (http://www.bundlestars.com) currently have a bundle for £3.99 which includes 10 games. Not sure if it's open to US purchasers as the prices are only showing in £ for me but it does advertise as you getting $150 worth of games so maybe check it out?

Just added the games to my Steam cart and the total comes to £108.50 - this bundle from Bundlestars.com (http://Bundlestars.com/) is just £3.99, thats a saving of £104.51 which is 96% off!

Also on the site but not bundled are the other two Stalker games for £2.49 and £1.59 each.

EDIT: They now have System Shock 2 on sale for £1.19 for the next 3 days!
