View Full Version : Good news!

So, this is just a little bit of good news that I felt the need to share :)

If you're familiar at all with my job, you'll know that I essentially spend all day getting complained/shouted at by members of the public, whether by telephone or by email. It's not a difficult job but it can be incredibly dull and, at times, stressful when I can't do anything to help the people I'm speaking to/emailing.

Recently, the team responsible for delivering all of our in-house training announced that they are going to be taking on additional members (on a rolling basis) to help them with the creation/delivery of future training packages. This would be, in effect, a three month secondment to a much more diverse role (that doesn't involve speaking to any members of the public!)

This morning, I went to a group interview for that position and this afternoon was selected as one of the people to go forward and actually take part in the development opportunity. Yay! I don't know when I am starting exactly (and there is no additional pay for this) but just the chance to do something different is an incredibly welcome thing.

Have you received any good news today?

Not having to deal with the public at large is so awesome. I miss those days sometimes. No, I miss those days at all times.

I will say that I am now dealing with the public in a less angsty way though, which is a step in the right direction.

I don't mind so much when it's responding to them by email, because generally it's a much more focused method of communication. I can just cut out all the nonsense and respond to the query, whereas on the phone you have to listen to them ramble on for half an hour about all of their medical ailments and their grievances with the government.

I once got asked by a customer support person "Is that a General Grievance?"

I laughed.

She didn't get it.

Tell me about it.

We have our line of business broken down into communication channels. I wanted on the email group so bad.

Maybe one day!

We are just branching out into using Facebook and web chat to communicate with customers, so hopefully I will get to be involved in that project from the beginning. Should give me a better chance of staying involved with it in the future, then!

Why is the title of this post not "Good news everyone!" Professor Farnsworth disapproves of you and your young, hip ways!

Good a very positive work evaluation today - my first in my role as Tax Specialist. That's pretty awesome.

No other real good news at the moment. Hoping for some at some point and just trying desperately to hold on until it happens.

On the topic of customer service and communication with the public, I still deal with them directly on occasion. However, the nature of my role is that of the dominant party in the exchange. The people who get forwarded to me are those who either need my help or need an explanation only I am qualified to provide. If they step out of line, they learn very quickly that they either tread carefully or not at all. I have a giant hammer in reserve, ready to drop at a moment's notice. :)

More frequently, I prepare things that are forms of written communication, and one-way at that. Insulation from the public is nice indeed and allows me to focus on the quality of the communication a lot better.

We just started doing that too. It's like a whole bunch of groups and companies have suddenly gotten onto this social media "thing"

I don't deal with the general public AT ALL. In fact, I haven't had to do that in over seven years. I love it :D

Yeah, we have as well. Doesn't make a huge difference to most of the company, but the upshot is that Youtube and Facebook aren't blocked on our network anymore. ^_^

My interaction with the public isn't much, but sometimes I have to deal with Customs and it's a total crapshoot.

I mentioned in the random thread that I'm applying for a (paid) job in video games journalism, so wish me more luck guys! I got awarded some employee of the month in September, where I am right now, so I'm hoping that my fortune is on the up!

^^ As a general advise for job search, for you and everyone else, just keep pushing and don't give up, pro-actively displaying interest (and follow up during the whole process with phone calls and email), and you will get something you like eventually. Research and understand thoroughly what the employer needs, and show that you are 110% motivated.. that you really want the job, and that you are willing to do the best effort possible. Show initiative, and be highly positive when you interact with potential job interviewers. Also, no detail is too small to think about when you reflect on how you can make a better impression.

Maybe I can rub off some luck on you in your job search. I just went through a second round interview for an accounting software service (SaaS) firm as a support technician, and got a job offer. Signing contract on Monday. :)

Even more good news: I got through to the second stage of the application process! I will be having a telephone interview soon and have to write another review of 1000-1500 of one of the big releases at the minute/coming up, including Arkham City and Skyrim... wahey!

Thanks :) I really really want this. Hopefully my enthusiasm and 'raw talent' will outweigh the fact that I have zero experience in print journalism.

I'm applying to jobs. Really want to do something other than what I'm doing now, and some more money would be nice too.

I have my 30 minute phone interview next Thursday with one of the magazine editors. Exciting!
