View Full Version : The Lonesome Road to Dragon*Con '12

As has been much discussed in the recent past, Dragon*Con '12 is a go, and there are quite a few costumes planned. Dr. Who and Fallout are the most discussed costuming groups that have mostly been talked about, and so in order to document this year-long prep I'm posting this thread. I've got a list of folks I'm making props for, and will periodically edit this post as time goes on and things are completed.

And of course there will be progress pictures :)

So far I have:

Jenny - Power Fist
Sarah - PB3K
Charley - Ballistic Fist + assorted help
Myself - Veteran Ranger costume

As of this morning, my workspace looks like this
http://i255.photobucket.com/albums/hh126/silancy/workspace.jpg

Heat gun, glue gun, drills, saws, all the good stuff.

I decided to start off with Jenny's power fist first, since it's a good, relatively simple build.

Grabbed a pvc t-junction from the hardware store a few days back.
http://i255.photobucket.com/albums/hh126/silancy/ready-to-cut.jpg

After cutting off what I didn't need, I had this
http://i255.photobucket.com/albums/hh126/silancy/cut.jpg

And then measured and cut the foam to the shapes I wanted
http://i255.photobucket.com/albums/hh126/silancy/powerglove2.jpg

http://i255.photobucket.com/albums/hh126/silancy/powerglove1.jpg

Today's progress I'd say is pretty good. I stopped there since I have to work tonight, and I need a nap in a little bit.

So there you have it. We've taken taken our first steps down that Lonesome Road ;)

I am so excited to see what you create! :eee

For this Fallout group, I am aiming to dress as Veronica Santangelo

http://i54.tinypic.com/2sblmz5.jpg

Veronica's power fist is the only really distinctive item in her costume, as the rest of the time she wears ratty looking robes. Charley made the great suggestion that Veronica's robes could be replicated with a bathrobe. I won't have the money until after Christmas, most likely, to pick up the various pieces of the Veronica costume - but I wanted to store a couple of links here anyway, for potential clothing items.

Bathrobe potential #1 http://www.moreluxuries.com/Shortie-Waffle-Weave-Bathrobe-Brown/M/B002C3QX5Y.htm
Hood potential #1 http://www.joke.co.uk/the-mad-monk-robe~23211.html?ref=base

Also need: brown welding gloves, trousers, boots (what kind??)

Loklorien s'Ilancy
Oct 15th, 2011, 03:25:48 PM
As far as the gloves, a pair of either small or X-small welding gloves will be best, and you can cut the fingers off of them :)

Like this (http://www.sentrysafetysupply.com/images/sentry-prod-images/810-1.jpg).

I say welding gloves, since I'll be able to attach the right hand one to the inside of the power fist so it doesn't shift or fall off :)

I'll ask around at work, but I doubt they're going to have any that would fit your hands, hehe. I did get Charley's from work, and it looks perfect. I'd check thrift stores or ebay, since you're more likely to get them pre-weathered that way.

Meet Lucius Metellus, Triarus Primus Decanus of Caesar's Legion. This (or something pretty similar to this) is my end destination.

To this end, I've gathered a bit of equipment thusfar:

Football shoulder pads
Catcher's chest plate
Carpenter's belt
Catcher's shinguards

I'm weathering the shoulder pads, and will modify them extensively along with the other gear. I have combat boots around here somewhere, and will cobble together other gear from other places. I'm reading up on sewing, and will fabricate a loose knee-length tunic to wear under the armor.

In addition to that, Christin is building my primary weapon, a wrist-mounted doubled barelled shotgun called a ballistic fist. She's also gonna help me fabricate a gladius machete. Last, I'm working on building a standard, which if I parade, I will lug around a few city blocks. It'll have a Legionary Aquila on top, a skull, the Legio X bull banner, a route 66 sign, and other bric-a-brac like maybe an ammo belt or something.

Now that I think about it, don't worry about getting the welding gloves. I'll go ahead and do that since I need to bolt it to the gauntlet before I can do more work on it :)

Oh, awesome. Thank you! I did some searching on eBay and google last night and I guess there aren't a lot of welders who require small sized gloves @_@

Loklorien s'Ilancy
Oct 16th, 2011, 04:46:55 AM
No problem :)

Haha yeah, all the welders I know are big guys. Though I did find a site called Charm and Hammer the has small ones for women, and if I can't find any at the hardware store when I go later today I'll order online.

I figure I'll just size for me since your hands are either the same size or a tad smaller :)

Didn't like the side panel, so I tore it off, made a proper template file when I got home this morning, and have started work on the linkages :)

I haven't attached them yet, but I did make sure they fit along the side how I wanted

Also, I bought a pair of cheapo walmart leather gloves to use until I get the welder's gloves

http://i255.photobucket.com/albums/hh126/silancy/powerglove6.jpg

And then I took a little break to be an archeologist (read: prep a skull for Charley to slide onto his standard)!

Legionary standard in process. The frame has been built. Tomorrow we'll add leather wrap for the hand guards, add weathering and rust effects, add latin abbreviated script "LEG * CAES" beneath the bull, and that should be it until I get the gold eagle and the route 66 sign. After that, will weather the sign and the banner, and attach both.

I think we're gonna cut it in half and just paint a junction and attach it when parading, so as to avoid trying to awkwardly fit that thing in my car. Still that would be hilarious!

Why not just pimp out your car Mad Max style? That way the legion standard won't look so out of place. :mischief

Not at all :) You can buy all sorts of different pvc junctions at Lowes or Home Depot, and the most effort you're going to have to put in is cutting the standard pole in half. Which in itself is a breeze when you've got a hacksaw ;)

The only things left to get for the standard anyhow is a cap for the handle bit, the t-junction, and a reducer coupling to go on top so I can actually screw the eagle bit on.

Dasquian Belargic
Oct 23rd, 2011, 03:48:57 PM
What kind of set-up are you planning on having for the NCR flag?

Loklorien s'Ilancy
Oct 23rd, 2011, 06:10:29 PM
I'll most likely get two California state flags and cut up one to mod the other with.

Haven't decided whether I want to put it on a small flagpole or if I want to have it draped over my shoulders.

Dasquian Belargic
Oct 24th, 2011, 10:44:50 AM

http://lh6.ggpht.com/_RU8vXW4WLqU/TMOmPbzlFuI/AAAAAAAAWR0/6762TIXEADA/FNV%20WP7.jpg

If so, I say flagpole, so it can whip dramatically in the wind beside/behind you!

Loklorien s'Ilancy
Oct 24th, 2011, 12:32:12 PM
Yeah, that's the one :)

The only reason I'm not sure about putting it on a pole is that I don't know if I'll want to carry it around everywhere; but I can always only put it on the pole for the parade I suppose, hehe.

Whole lotta things happening, so here's a bunch of pics!

http://i127.photobucket.com/albums/p156/LoungieMu/a8a283af.jpg

Added the latin text. Decided to keep it to vulgar latin script entirely. Christin did the painting since she's got a better hand for that.

http://i127.photobucket.com/albums/p156/LoungieMu/150cbde0.jpg

Next, I weathered it a bit. Shredded it up with coarse grit sandpaper until it was running ragged at the bottom, and teased open some holes. Burned it a little with a lighter in spots, crumpled it, abused it, and got it a little dirty.

http://i127.photobucket.com/albums/p156/LoungieMu/5c4b9f55.jpg

Got my Route 66 sign in, beat on it with a hammer in spots, and covered my hand in red paint, slapping it on there to give it the sign of the maniple (It's a symbol on Roman standards noting a formation of troops) Took a few trusty distressing tools out in my back yard and...eh...distressed things.

http://i127.photobucket.com/albums/p156/LoungieMu/ff4df93b.jpg

Blew off a lot of paint with a single #7 shot, so I had to reapply the maniple sign.

http://i127.photobucket.com/albums/p156/LoungieMu/f48d727d.jpg

Assembled the whole thing. The standard frame is pvc primed grey with rust effects in spaces. On top I've got a flagpole topper, seemed fitting.

http://i127.photobucket.com/albums/p156/LoungieMu/8fc3e36f.jpg

View of the whole thing to give a sense of scale. Down below you can see the crossbar, and the leather wrapping for the hand grips. The superstructure is divided in the middle by a junction that can be pulled apart to make it easy to travel, and it's reinforced inside with a dowel to prevent wobbling.

So, the standard is now effectively done (I'll probably put a few trinkets and honors on it here and there but thats as the mood strikes me). The standard, however, is nothing in and of itself and means nothing without the fearless Legionaries willing to fight and die before it, spilling blood before invincible Mars and his unconquerable son Caesar.

So in other words, time to get cracking on my own outfit.

http://i127.photobucket.com/albums/p156/LoungieMu/0ebed533.jpg

http://i127.photobucket.com/albums/p156/LoungieMu/e8698403.jpg

Work in progress of course. The shoulderpads are primed here and not detail painted yet. Just got the helmet in the mail and spent FOREVER tearing out padding to make it fit on my head (the seller said it was a large, my ass it was a large!) The bandana is a placeholder as I'll have a longer red cloth covering my face. Helmet of course needs priming, painting, and feathers.

http://i127.photobucket.com/albums/p156/LoungieMu/215692d6.jpg

Feather crest work in progress. It's gonna be more of a transverse crest than a complete swept-back shock, but I'm okay with the look. Gonna work in smaller turkey feathers through the back to fill it in. Gotta glue in some foam to use as stabilizing agents for the quills, then I'll paint the thing and finally seat the feathers and anchor them with hot glue.

So I put together my tunic, which is apparently one of the easiest sewing projects around. I was able to finish it in the span of a few hours on the couch. Even watched HBO's Rome for muse filler as I worked the needle.

http://i127.photobucket.com/albums/p156/LoungieMu/75b9be64.jpg

It's red duck cloth and double stitched high strength jeans string. Left ends unhemmed so they'll naturally fray a bit. It's a bit filled out right now but naturally that will change.

The bottom of the tunic rests about 2 inches above my knee when I sit so I'll make an conscious decision to wear underwear at least!

Any of those would be super easy to do, and don't forget I can always pick up things here for folks, such as nerf guns, paint them up, and afterwards we can ship them back to their respective owners homes :)

I'm leaning towards something along the lines of an NCR Ranger (gotta make use of all this military crap kicking around my dad's place somehow)... anyone else doing something similar, or are y'all gonna beat the crap out of me because you're all from the factions I keep shooting? :uhoh

Charley is going as a decanus, Brian and I are going as NCR vet rangers (unless Brian decided to go as No-Bark instead :p), Jenny is setting herself up for some Veronica goodness, Sarah is apparently going as Cass now, and I think the Boy was going to try for Benny :)

I am trying to convince Martina to do Miss Fortune for our Fallout group.

So who is doing what costume right now:

Bryan Nobark(?)
Charley Caesar's Legion
Christin Veteran Ranger
Jenny Veronica
Sara Cassidy
The Boy Boomer
Peter Mysterious Stranger (found a little 2x2x2inch MP3 player on Amazon for my gun)
Martina Miss Fortune or a giant Nuka Cola Bottle

Chris ?
Jace ?

Cirrsseeto Quez
Jul 5th, 2012, 02:07:49 AM
I think Chris was also dabbling with the Mysterious Stranger, but IMHO he really really really needs to go as Arcade because the only thing he'd need is a blonde wig and a dirty lab coat, and maybe a few odds and ends.

http://i127.photobucket.com/albums/p156/LoungieMu/bdf36cd3.jpg

Still have to put feathers in, add studs to the chest protector, distress and stain fabrics, and continue to lose weight. Also probably should do some kind of arm wraps.

A few updates for you lot.

http://i127.photobucket.com/albums/p156/LoungieMu/fc55d94b.jpg

Added some antiqued brass upholstery nails to the chest protector, which instantly convey an armor feel to the piece. A nice easy $3 mod. The vintage kit had some wear and damage to the straps, which I repaired with a splice and some duct tape. Lovely when the jankiest low-tech fix is also the one that makes it look more wasteland authentic.

http://i127.photobucket.com/albums/p156/LoungieMu/a163030f.jpg

Better shot of the abdomen armor. Here I'm beginning distressing, daubing with a concentrated tea solution to simulate oxidation bleed and other filth. Will apply further treatments as I go.

http://i127.photobucket.com/albums/p156/LoungieMu/2715cec6.jpg

Priming my gladius to prepare for silver & black treatment, and a little bit of oxidation effect and maybe dried blood. You'll note the design isn't a true new vegas model. It's more or less based on the ancient Pompeiian style gladius. This guy is made by cold steel as a trainer sword, so I figure if a mock fight breaks out with a con, might be handy to have something that can have a go! Will eventually etch some nasty latin taunt onto it. Thinking perhaps Ursa Delenda Est.

http://i127.photobucket.com/albums/p156/LoungieMu/0826fa9a.jpg

Oh yeah and the helmet is now fully online.

That is so ridiculously impressive! I can't wait to see the two of you in costume together :eee

ps. good luck fitting that into your suitcase

EDIT: here's my veronica costume in its current incarnation. the trousers will need dirtying up a lot (which i'll do in Bama most likely) and I need to add a few more bits, but otherwise I'm pretty happy how it's looking. not really sure what to wear on my feet though, that's the only missing piece!

So a trip to the mall yesterday did not turn up the illusive jacket for my costume...

But I did find some boots that were amazing enough to confirm Alice as my second costume for the con. :3
