I know Liz and I were planning heavily on doing a Bend, OR trip in '12 for our 'Nerd trip' - but now her situation is very much unknown and I don't know if she'll even be coming out next summer as she'd planned. So... I just don't know anymore. :cry
I don't think I will be able to do Dragon*Con though, I'm probably making a big trip out to OK for my parents' 50th and that will be our vacation $ for the year.

I'm good with DragonCon. If we're gonna do this, I can get my ticket tomorrow.
EuroNerd will happen one day, I don't doubt, but until we figure a time when everyone in the US has the money and the vacation time to make a successful trip over here, having us Euros travel to the US is the most logical option :)

Yeah, I hate to say it but I won't be eligible for a third week of vacation until the summer of 2014, so we could always start scheduling now for EuroNerd happening in 2014. Which might be good because we'd have plenty of time to plan and start saving.

Tentatively, I'm a no.
What forestalls me from this is primarily the expense of attending the Con itself. I'm sure I could arrange for the time off, but I'm already planning on an attempt to attend PAX East next year in the Spring. Between that, my standard January trip each year, and how I don't have any money accumulated right now, I'm estimating the money just won't be there for another expensive Con venue.
I'll keep people updated, but for now I'm on the sidelines.

Each of those vacations cost me a good bit just to attend, to be honest. 2009 was fine because I could afford it, but I had a change in expenses mid-2010 and it's put me behind financially.
I had more typed, but I'll cut to the chase: the next year is going to be touch and go for me financially until I can pay off my student loan. At the current rate, it will get paid in full sometime in late 2012. If I can push the timetable up to sometime during the spring, the D*Con thing will be easy to attend.
Of course, that outcome is possible, but not probable. If I can't make it happen by May-ish, it makes more sense to save and pay the loan ASAP than to take a fall vacation. I'd essentially sacrifice a vacation next year to make sure future vacations went off without a hitch.

The Atlanta Marriott is actually taking reservations at 'Con rate' starting from tomorrow morning. I know a few of us had discussed getting rooms in the host hotels, so wasn't sure if anyone was interested into looking at this: http://dragoncon.org/location.php#Host_Hotels
The Hilton and Sheraton are already taking reservations at Con rate also: $242 per night for a quad at the Hilton, $215 at the Marriott or $209 at the Sheraton. Those rates are on the assumption that you're staying for 3 or 4 nights.
I don't know how many people they would be willing to allow into a quad room.
Thoughts?

That is the question!
Do hotels generally restrict/give a shit about the number of people crammed into each room?
Loklorien s'Ilancy
Oct 2nd, 2011, 10:19:12 AM
They probably do, but I'm having a hard time believing how they'd be able to strictly enforce it during an event like Dragon*Con. If we get a quad room, so long as folks stick around one of the four people with Keys we should be fine?
Dasquian Belargic
Oct 2nd, 2011, 10:48:46 AM
If the Hilton quad is the same as the room that Dee and Sarah were in last time, you could easily get 6 people in there quite comfortably.

You need to know the basics of how to root for your team, but perhaps more importantly, you need to know who to root against. By putting your lot in with Alabama, you now are mortal enemies with Tennessee. It also gives you rights by default to troll the rest of the South Eastern Conference (the group of teams Bama is in) but this is true for any other team. You can also troll teams outside of the conference, but this is less fun and usually has less historical weight behind it.
This year Bama's biggest threat in the SEC is Louisiana State University. They are either ranked first or second, depending on who you're listening to. Bama is 2nd or 3rd. Oklahoma is in the top 3 as well. It's likely either OK or LSU/Bama will play for the national title this year. It could be Wisconsin too.
Unfortunately for my team, Da U of Miami hasn't been very good for the past 8 years so I can't troll much of anyone.

First off: Squidbillies is not a cartoon. It is a serious factual documentary of life in Georgia (parts of which that aren't greater Atlanta) and a lot of that revolves around pulling for the Georgia Bulldogs. I personally don't care for Georgia but I don't actively hate them that much other than their milquetoast, loathsome, and fairweather fans. Then again they haven't been serious contenders in the conference for a decade or more.
Also if you become a Bama Fan, this is pretty much the hierarchy of teams to hate, and why:
1. Tennessee OR Auburn.
<object width="420" height="315"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/rRty9niJxe0?version=3&hl=en_US"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/rRty9niJxe0?version=3&hl=en_US" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="420" height="315" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true"></embed></object>
Auburn is more our traditional rival (The Iron Bowl between them is one of the most storied rivalry games in college football) but I also have to interact with Auburn fans in my day-to-day, so I can't just go around and punch them in the mouth or people would think I was a sociopath. Now they did win the national championship last year (literally the first time they've won since the Soviets launched Sputnik) and they paid about eight billion dollars under the table for living sentient douchebag Cam Newton to play bullshitball for them so they've been pretty fucking insufferable lately. However in my book, they still aren't as bad as...
...the Tennessee Volunteers are everything you hear about the South that is wrong. They did it all. Even if it doesn't make sense, they did it. I mean look at them. They wear the stupidest fucking colors ever. Road hazard orange and white is gaudy as shit. Also the Tennesseean accent is the worst accent on earth. Their fight song is hillbilly trash, their coaches are cheating shitheads, and they are responsible for notable football waterhead Peyton Manning being just a bastard in the NFL. Also they low down, they dirty, they some snitches, and snitches get stitches.
<object width="420" height="315"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/Vt2BAfhUHX0?version=3&hl=en_US"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/Vt2BAfhUHX0?version=3&hl=en_US" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="420" height="315" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true"></embed></object>
Also they spread this shit to Europe so they all deserve to be set on fire:
<object width="420" height="315"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/YSYOQqY_4rI?version=3&hl=en_US"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/YSYOQqY_4rI?version=3&hl=en_US" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="420" height="315" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true"></embed></object>
Alabama's awkward European mashup is infinitely cooler:
<object width="640" height="360"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/0lNFRLrP014&hl=en_US&feature=player_embedded&version=3"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowScriptAccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/0lNFRLrP014&hl=en_US&feature=player_embedded&version=3" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowfullscreen="true" allowScriptAccess="always" width="640" height="360"></embed></object>
3. LSU
Now this one is more that LSU fans fucking hate us for "stealing" our badass coach and evil asshole overlord Nick Saban (we stole him from the Dolphins fair and square, who stole him from LSU who stole him from Michigan State who stole him from...) and well LSU fans are drunk loud dirty cajun assholes. But I've never been that mad at LSU. I like going to LSU games because the food is always good. Crawfish etouffee and Abita Beer as a staple of RV grub is such a good thing. If some coonass named Boudreaux calls me a motherfucker to my face, I'm fine with that, just give me some seconds, please. Also, ALL LSU fans smell like corn dogs. All of them. Even if they try to hide it. They smell like a fucking corn dog.
4. Florida
Florida is kinda insufferable because when they get good they get Real Fucking Good and go on a death march of a few years where they just murder everybody in the conference. Their last reign of terror ended in 2009 when Alabama took their football Jesus (Tim Tebow) and nailed him to a cross on national television. Notable terrible football commentator Verne Lundquist wept openly.
<object width="420" height="315"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/myNyMP9ddrg?version=3&hl=en_US"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/myNyMP9ddrg?version=3&hl=en_US" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="420" height="315" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true"></embed></object>
Also Florida has the gayest football cheer in the whole NCAA in the Gator Chomp. Flap your arms open and shut like an alligator mouth. Do you feel like an asshole? You probably are. This cheer is only awesome when teams completely scorch Florida and use it on them to mock Florida without mercy.
Alabama fans also acutely hate Florida fans in particular for Gator Chomping and cheering in 2005 when one of our star players, Tyrone Prothro, was hideously injured in a career-ending compound fracture. Kinda a sore spot for me as my sis & Tyrone are good friends.
5. Mississippi State
Ever heard a cowbell?
Annoying, ain't it?
Ever heard seventy-thousand cowbells at once?
Justifiable homicide.
Although I will say they more than get theirs when every few years there's buzz that they're gonna be good and it goes like 2 or 3 games into the season and LOL NOPE YOU'RE MISSISSIPPI STATE YOU SUCK.
Notables:

Though technically not a member of the conference until next year, this fucking cow college is full of creepy fake military cultists who like to squeeze their testicles and yell in unison to "cheer" their team on. They worship a collie that I-shit-you-not is a general in their fake army and they have to salute it and shit if it pisses on their test in whatever class it runs into. Also they're really bad at building bonfires. They think they are going to have an awesome time in our conference but it's gonna be like that time in Full Metal Jacket where all the other marines just absolutely blanket party that fatass Private Pyle. They suck at football. They suuuuck.

Then you're at the level of 80% of football fans already. Tons of fans have no idea about game mechanics beyond touchdowns, but they still cheer, scream, and curse like rabid dogs. I will work with the finer points later.

I wasn't sure exactly when the game would be so I took off plenty of time, also allowing time for the obligatory post-trip recovery period, i.e. me struggling to get up / go to sleep at a normal time.
But yes! I definitely want to go to the footballs. Especially after seeing your pics from the game you were just at. It's ridiculous that you could fit half of the population of Newcastle into that one stadium.
Sanis Prent
Oct 9th, 2011, 08:52:38 AM
Game day effectively triples the population of Tuscaloosa if the match is sold out. It's a crazy atmosphere. Hopefully my sister will still have their arrangement where they rent a tailgating tent for home games on the quad, which is a massive field at the center of campus. If not we can stake our own claim elsewhere, or hang out at my fraternity house, since I get reserved parking as a fraternity alumni. We'll get you hooked up. Houndstooth cap, lotta crimson & white, etc.
We'll also may be able (probably not since we'll be neck-deep in Dragon*Con activities) to catch the Bama / Michigan game on TV the saturday before because they're playing at Cowboy's stadium in Arlington, and it's gonna be a big media game. I'm not sweating it though because (A) we will murder Michigan because they're Real Bad and (B) I can get automatic score updates in the middle of whatever nerd panel I'm in.

Also we can totally bar crawl on the strip after the game, or if we want to drink beer from a cooler and jug whisky only, we can do that before and after at the tailgate. I'm pretty sure this is standard procedure at all sporting events though so no surprises.

Gotta get a lot more fit than I am right now to pull this off, but I've got plenty of time to do this. That's the major thing. Everything else is apparently gonna be pretty easy. Gotta distress the armor a bit, add paint and nails in the right places, get a tunic (will have to order from somewhere), tool belt, a cloak, and a few other pieces of flair, notably an airsoft gun and a machete. I may or may not make a Legio X standard, haven't decided.

Here's an image of the parade route that I got from the group who does the Doctor Who section of the parade (I joined their forums ^_^;))
http://i54.tinypic.com/29nt195.gif
The official weapon policy is:
Please abide by our weapons policy: All weapons must be non-working and peace bonded. No functioning projectile weapons includes water pistols, silly-string guns, and ping-pong pistols. Bladed weapons must be cased or sheathed at all times. No clowning around or showing off in the common areas. Any weapon used in an offensive manner will be confiscated and rule #7 enforced. We expect you to use good judgment; with your help, we can continue to allow peace-bonded weapons - thanks!
Here's also a little bit from the Dragon Con wiki about weapons:
A peace bond is a very visible lock or tie on a realistic looking weapon to make clear to security and to police that it is not intended to be used for violent purposes.
Costuming frequently comes in the form of characters with weapons, and in many cases, these weapons look quite real. Convention security prefers that these items be peace bonded. The peace bond will usually come in the form of a zip tie over the trigger such that it couldn't be pulled, or holding a bladed weapon in the sheath.
Attitudes about peace bonding are far more relaxed at Dragon*Con than at other conventions: it's perfectly acceptable for members in costume to have un-bonded weapons such that they may pose with them. Some conventions are strict enough to require even the most obviously fake weapon to be bonded. If you are going to costume with weapons, please remember to be respectful with them.

With regards to the parade, the best way to get into that seems to be find a group who is already doing costumes similar to your own (hence me signing up with the Doctor Who groups forums).
The whole parade is handled by a Yahoo group, of all things: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/dc_parade/
So you could even post there asking if there were any other Fallout cosplays, or people whose costumes were in a similar vein.

Amtrak is definitly out, from Lakeland, FL, I would have to take a bus to Jacksonville, FL, then a train to Washington DC, before I get onboard another train back down to Atlanta, and it's 137$ one way, which would be close to the estimated gas cost for driving there AND back. The Bama game is against the mighty Hilltoppers of Western Kentucky (they aren't mighty, they suck lol) and will be in Tuscaloosa. Unfortunately that's all I have so far. Tickets become available toward next summer, and even shit like kickoff time is variable usually until a few weeks before.
Basically the plan is this:
We will be in Tuscaloosa for Game Day. For certain. We will also tailgate for certain. Tickets I can either score in advance ($$$) or haggle somebody on the quad like an Arab bazaar hawker (tricky for bulk seating).
Because it's a shit game, it's gonna be cheap(er) but still probably like $50 a head for seats way up in the upper decks. Now if we win the championship this year (woooooo) then it probably also makes tickets more expensive, so...
Basically plan on eating food and getting drunk. We'll watch football whether its on a big screen or in the stadium. Either way it's fun as shit.
ATTN FOREIGNERS: Brush up on our fight song and other Alabama-related shit, because I guarantee you if you rock crimson and white and even passingly drop "Roll Tide" in your accent, people will throw food and booze at you by the wheel barrow full. You will want for nothing.

We can also go to all of the other Alabama breweries and taprooms too if folks wanna schlep up to Huntsville, which isn't far. Avondale, Blue Pants, Back Forty, and Straight to Ale all have taprooms I believe.

So you'd want to travel through to Atlanta on the 30th then? It would probably make more sense to fly in on the 29th then, since I don't think I could get in to B'ham particularly early

Right okay, so I have previously committed to attending. Truth be told, there was an omnipresent risk I would not be able to attend for financial reasons (cost of travel, lodging, cityfood, etc) especially if a financial crisis occurred. However, I have really good news and I have mildly disappointing news.
The good news is, this year the tax department has money to shell out for overtime work. I am taking full advantage of the maximum offered every week so far and it is helping me in a big way. However, I don't know how long this will last.
If the OT money lasts throughout the end of April as I expect, not only will I pay off all my debts early but I will also have enough money to attend Dragon*Con. And when I say attend, I really mean attend everything. Pregame shindig, Con itself, postgame Tide Rolling, booze hounding, novelty shirt buying: you name it I will be there 100% screaming like Jace er I mean like a thirteen-year-old girl meeting their favorite pop icon.
The disappointing news here is, to make this work, I have to forgo spending money on everything else in the months leading up to the con. Things like parts to a costume.
There are some scenarios where OT money continues past April, but I don't think I can reliably count on those. Even if they do happen, that's going to increase my available cash but decrease the time I have to put a costume together cuz I'll be working.
So, the tl;dr version:
Yay, my attendance is much more secure cuz I'm making extra $$$ for a limited time only!
Boo, Wasteland warrior gear not likely.
