That's great, but where's the psychic paper?

Also, when did you become the Archbishop of Canterbury?

My hunt for a suitable jacket to go with this costume is probably going to be the most time-consuming / expensive part of the whole process. I am also faced with the decision of which jacket to go for. The tweed is more iconic, but I feel like I could probably get a lot more wear out of a military trench coat, as an actual winter jacket.. :ohno

Personally I'd go for the military jacket, with added stetson. Like you say, you'll get more wear out of the jacket: and on top of that, you're much less likely to bump into other people in the exact same costume.

On a completely different note... in the Confidential that goes along with "The Girl Who Waited", they arranged for Karen Gillan to learn to drive a race car (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ogd6-ADBUXQ).

I wish I could get driving lessons like that. (or alternatively, I wish I was stuck in a car with Karen) :ohno

I'm not a fan of the trench coat personally, and I think the tweed jacket coupled with the other costume elements is iconic by comparison with the new look. But it's like you said, you need to think of the economics of it too, which of the two jackets will give you more long-term value for money?

That said, you wear a stetson with the trench coat, true, but with the tweed jacket you get a fez.

I've just discovered that a pair of my black skinny jeans are just loose enough around the ankles to be able to cuff them/roll them up. That's one new purchase avoided!

Another costume piece that was already part of my wardrobe: Dalek stompers.

Through what seems to be an absurd stroke of luck, I just found a Harris tweed jacket that is the exact same cloth and cut as the one worn by the Doctor in Victory Of The Daleks, The Time Of Angels, and Flesh And Stone - and it's roughly my size. Bought for £35 on eBay! Should be here in 2-3 working days :D

Another costume piece that was already part of my wardrobe: Dalek stompers.

Since I've stumbled into owning a screen accurate tweed jacket, I decided to go for a more accurate pair of boots as well. I hadn't planned on spending this much on this costume but as we're going to DragonCon next year (and I apparently have way too much in the way of disposable income / not enough fancy boots), why the hell not. Here's what I've picked up:

http://i53.tinypic.com/124wro6.jpg

Yes, they are different to the boots I already own, because they don't have zips on the inside ankle and also look more like the 'layer boots' that the Doctor wore in series 5, although they are all black rather than being black and brown. Here's the Doctor's boots in action:

http://i51.tinypic.com/1037wo1.jpg

I guess I just need to 'age' the leather a little somehow.. although the boots he wears in series 6 look a lot less distressed.

What is hilarious about putting the costume on is that I can't help but automatically mimic Smith's mannerisms, way of walking, etc too.

Captain Untouchable

Not yet. It's sat in my basket waiting for me to order something else.

I get all of my deliveries from Amazon sent to work... if someone asks me what I bought, I'll feel less guilty if I have something grown-up in the box as well. ^_^;

I'll also be buying some Jammie Dodgers when I take this to DragonCon next year :)

That's the first time a woman has ever flashed her sonic at me. :ohno

I'm toying with getting a Doctor Who costume together as well, just in case I either get very rich and make it to D*C, or find some other convention to romp around a little closer to home. However, all I've come up with so far is Craig Owen's football kit (http://i2.cdnds.net/10/09/550w_cult_doctor_who_football_shoot_3.jpg) (don't worry - I'll get you a matching #11 shirt, Jen ;) ), or possibly this (http://grummelmaedchen.files.wordpress.com/2011/09/d11s02e10_wallpaper_03.jpg) in the interests of simplicity.

Any other thoughts for notable / distinctively costumed male characters? There unfortunately aren't too many that spring to mind...

If you're hoping to come to D*C, Sarah is making an Amy costume and another Jen we know already has a brilliant River Song outfit - so a Rory would not go amiss!

I reckon I could pull off a 9th Doctor (Christopher Eccleston) costume - assuming I've recently had a haircut.

Oct 7th, 2011, 02:24:23 PM
I'd rather you left it on.

Also, you should've reconsidered where you put those brackets, because I stopped reading after you said "9th Doctor" and thought: "It must've taken some stamina to get through the other eight!" :lol

Do it, Peter! I bet pulling off Nine would be easy.

Damn you, temptress. :shakefist

Is it bad that I spent the last hour looking for a Rory-as-nurse costume as well, so I can wear a different outfit on different days? ^_^;

Edit:

I just looked on the website for the "rain suit", to see about a price. There's a map of local dealers, with a few in the UK. I zoomed in and went "Oooh, there's one in London." Zoomed in further. "Huh, West London... kinda near me." Zoomed in further. "Holy crap, that's the motorcycle shop down the road from my sister."

Shame the ensemble is gonna cost me a few hundred. :ohno

Dasquian Belargic

It's tempting though, isn't it? :lol You can probably get some of the 'Viper' kit cheap if you shop around. When I was looking a bits for my BSG costume, I looked at a lot of army surplus sites and prices varied drastically depending on which one I was on.

I just got my second set of braces and bowtie in the post today, so that I can use 'The Wedding of River Song' outfit as a second costume ;) I was not planning on spending this much on this costume, but I am having fun with it and the prospect of showing it off at / taking part in the parade at Dragon Con is exciting!

EDIT: Also, my boots finally appeared:

I don't have any spirit gum so I can't actually model the eyedrive properly

http://i53.tinypic.com/231nhc.jpg

but the one I got for Sarah (to be Amy Pond) is a slimmer more flexible material so actually clung to my face for long enough to take a picture. The positioning is a little off here, but you get the idea!
