Just wondered if anybody else has seen this. I thought it looked promising when I saw the first trailer, and have kept an eye on its IMDB rating since release. I was looking forward to it but when I sat down in the cinema to watch it this evening I wasn't expecting to enjoy it so much.
I am in no way a fan of Planet of the Apes and am completely ignorant beyond several pop culture references from other films. But I thoroughly enjoyed this movie. John Lithgow's scenes were very touching and I adore the man as many will know. And the story of the central character - Caesar - was great. I enjoyed the transformation from what he is at the beginning to what he becomes at the end, and while James Franco wasn't in the spotlight at all and more of a plot driver, he performed very well. AlsoI found it odd for Brian Cox to have such a minor role but then I remembered the Bourne films.
My only gripe with the film existed before I watched it - Draco Malfoy. If I weren't on my iPhone I'd open another tab and look up his name but Malfoy was rubbish. He was just Malfoy putting on a dreadful American accent. And that most famous of lines was just so horribly contrived that I laughed out of disgust. He even had what was essentially a lightning wand for most of his appearances.
All the scenes with the apes were fantastic. For the most part the CGI was awesome, on the odd occasion it was quite poor but overall my disbelief was out the window and swinging in the trees along with the chimps and orangutans.
I don't think everyone will enjoy it. Some may think it is downright stupid but to those people I shall say two things: it is science fiction and even in reality apes and chimpanzees in particular are incredibly intelligent. There may be several instances where things occur and you reaction may be the same as my fiancee's laugh of disbelief but just remember those two points above as well as where the movie is heading in terms of the original films.
I loved it.
