I figure this deserves its own threads since the movie is shattering records.
It broke the midnight record last night taking in 43.5 million dollars and now reports are coming in that it made 24 million dollars during the day through 1PM PST. How high can it go for the day? 80 looks certain but it could do up to 100 million if this keeps up. I don't want to get too ahead of myself and will anticipate a 85 million OD and see it breaking the OW record with over 160 million.

The Potter franchise has never had problems with openings. However, it's one of the more frontloaded series I can remember. Even if it opens to 160+ - I still don't see 400M domestic.

I don't see it either I would see between 350-380 at the most. Of course right now, don't know what to believe. The threads on mojo are going nuts.

I am not so sure if 400M is out of range. I noticed it shattered the opening record in Norway as well. The international numbers are going to be interesting. What speaks in favor of its legs is the very good reviews (97% on rotten tomatoes) and being the grand finale of a long series. Not to mention, when a movie opens this big, it does not need as much legs. The weekday numbers could be fairly big as well. That is not to say it won't be frontloaded, but I do get a sense of this movie being more a phenomenon than previous installments. I feel it will make 350 million domestic at the bare minimum.

So Friday numbers are in it made 92.1 million for its OD. So, it did 127% better than New Moon. It will crush the OW and depending on how frontloaded it is should do 165-180 for the OW. This thing is a beast and yeah I think 350 is the floor, not sure if it can break 400 but it will be the #1 movie of the year.

It will be really interesting to see Saturday and Sunday numbers. That will give us a clue how frontloaded this thing is.

::sigh:: Remember when the first HP film broke the then-OW record - with $90M? Such a figure seems so quaint now. O_o

well it was a little frontloaded but still took the OW record
http://www.boxofficeguru.com/weekend20.htm. From here it is hard to say how much it will make. I think it could make anywhere from 330-360, although it is doing gangbusters overseas and it made 475 WW, which is amazing. It should make over a billion dollars and could pass ROTK for #3 all time.

I am puzzled by the gloomy total gross predictions at BOM forums. Some people think 350M is the ceiling, and some even predict 270M. Wow. I actually still think 350M is the floor.

That midnight haul was ridiculous, which of course makes Saturday look bad in comparison. But what's interesting is the Sunday drop of only about 21%, which is really good only 3 days into the release. It is tracking well ahead of Deathly Hallows Part 1 (43M so far, and rising), which had horrible legs even for a Potter movie. I'd think it would at the very least match those legs. Personally, I feel it will have more like Half-Blood Prince type of legs.

For the second weekend, I think around 60M range.

LOL the BOM forums are crazy. You have a lot of trolls and a few Harry Potter haters over there who really can't get over their bias. I think it can get to 350 not sure about 370. We will have to see how it holds up next weekend.
I think the numbers are more impressive OS. It should make at least 800 OS and could make as much as 900. And we could have 3 1 billion dollar films this year if Transformers 3 makes it.

Weekend actuals are out:

Jul 15, 2011 $91,071,119
Jul 16, 2011 $42,414,346 (-53.5%)
Jul 17, 2011 $35,703,962 (-15.9%)

3-day total: $169,189,427

So it actually did better than the estimates, and now that Sunday drop look even better. The 4th biggest Sunday gross of all time. The reaction at BOM forums is hilarious as they start realizing this movie is not as frontloaded as they thought it was.

There is one poster on there who is hilarious, Baumer. He think it will barely make 300 still. I think he is just stubborn. It also increased WW and is now at 481. I can see it finishing around 1.2 billion.

So what do you think it will make for Monday? 16-17M? I think it will have some huge weekday numbers.

Wow, Baumer is still kicking around? I haven't been by the BOM or WorldOfKJ forums in years.

Fantastic opening weekend for Potter. :)

It made 18 million for Monday. It is still on track for 400, although it will be interesting to see if it can do it. It should pass 200 million today.

DH2 sets the 4-day record with $187.2 million.

18M is a terrific gross for a normal Monday, and only a 49% drop from Sunday. I think it is well on track to hit 400M now. In fact, at this point, I'd wager on it hitting 400M. As a comparison, DH1 made only 8M on its Monday, and a 65% drop from Sunday. DH2 is now tracking 54M ahead of DH1 (total gross 295M) and pulling away.

Potter dropped on Wed and Thursday although not so bad on Thursday and is now at 226 in the U.S. and over 450 OS for over 675 WW. It should pass 850 this weekend and will definitely pass a billion dollars and highest grossing film of the year.

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 is now the third highest grossing movie of all time, passing Return of the King.

I think there is no way it can pass Titanic, but it should finish around 1.3-1.35 billion. Very impressive run overall.

Domestically it passed the 3rd Transformers film Monday. Looks to get to about 375M or so at this point.

Yeah you are right, and baring some surprise film coming out of nowhere it should remain #1 film of the year. I think it is a pretty good result for the final. It came close to matching GOF's ticket sales.
