Is that the helicarrier hovering above Nick Fury's head? :ohno
I wonder how accurate the costume designs are. The Iron Man armour looks more like the Mark IV / start of Iron Man 2 version, rather than the Mark VI / end of Iron Man 2 version, what with the round arc reactor and all. But it's very accurate to the Mark IV version, so the artist was presumably working from photos/designs/etc.
Hawkeye looks awesome - there's something very Celtic about the outfit, and yet it looks fairly modern and practical. The Cap is far more "superhero-y" than any of the other SHIELD stuff, but that makes sense; and it's a nice balance between the comics, and what they designed for First Avenger.
And it looks like Maria Hall is going to wear the same tight sexy outfit as Black Widow. Not sure I can cope with both Scarlett Johansson and Cobie Smulders wearing that... :mischief

Huh.
I'm going to reserve judgement until I see some official photos, I think - costumes seldom look the same in "natural light" as they do on film. Slightly surprised, though: was expecting them to stick closer to the costume from First Avenger, but they've actually "traditionalised" it a bit more.

Can we have a Thor/Cap buddy movie, please? :ohno
Given the personalities, the tone of the movies, the "out of time" vs "out of this world" ( ;) ) comparison... I am genuinely looking forward to Chris and Chris sharing scenes.
It'll be interesting to see how they approach other fight / assignment / objective pairings too. Black Widow and Hawkeye are bound to be shown fighting together at some point; I wonder if that means we'll see Iron Man and the Hulk teaming up. Not only are those pairings interesting in terms of character dynamics, they also match up in terms of CGI: Hawkeye and Widow use weapons that can be simulated with real props; Thor and the Captain have a mix of prop weapons and CGI throwing; and both Iron Man and the Hulk are filmed with a mix of motion capture and heavy CGI.
And the Cap's new costume is already growing on me. He probably just loses his hat/mask during the fight, but comic accuracy be damned: he looks proper-cool without it! :eee

Yeah, a good choice - those opening chords kinda echo the chords from Iron Man (the Black Sabbath song), too.
Also, I love how epic Chris Hemsworth's Thor laugh is. :ohno
I'm only just starting to realise how clever they've been introducing the characters, too. Captain America is clearly going to be the leader, and they seem to be setting both Hawkeye and Black Widow up as loyal/obedient agents... or at least, ones that won't go too maverick. They've then made one of that twosome familiar with each of Thor and Iron Man. There's some interesting symmetry going on there.
It'll be interesting to see how the leadership question plays out, too. Judging from the brief clip where Steve gets his costume, it looks like he's got a leadership role within SHIELD (it was in a room full of helmets, tac vests, etc), and of course he led his team of soldiers back in the War. Tony is used to calling the shots for his business, but he also took charge of the situation in both the Iron Man movies. And Thor of course is the Prince of Asgard, who led his little band of warriors... that whole movie was about him learning what it means to be a leader/King.
They've all got decent reasons to justify being in charge. And in fact, the current Avengers cartoon (Earth's Mightiest Heroes) has a RDJ-inspired Tony Stark as the team leader, but with a slightly more "I'm a soldier and I follow orders" kind of Captain. It certainly looks like Captain America will be the official leader in this... but between Iron Man, Thor, and the Hulk, he's not exactly got the most obedient bunch of characters to work with.
Yeah, I realise that's par for the course with most Avengers origins... I just thought it was interesting given how much effort the origins stories put into setting the starring hero up as a potential leader.

I finally saw Thor recently and enjoyed it a lot. I still have to catch up on Captain America, I'm hoping to do that soon once it comes out on DVD.
This looks awesome. It's defininitely going on the "must see" list for next summer. Although I'm going to miss Edward Norton a bit, I liked his version of the Hulk.

I hope they play up the differences between Captain America and Iron Man. It'd be fun to see a little of the Civil War "rivalry" bleeding over from the comics to the movies.
Captain Untouchable
Oct 12th, 2011, 01:45:12 PM
That could be cool. Though that's an interesting thing to bring up: from a Civil War perspective, Iron Man and Captain America are back to front. Steve Rogers is the one loyal to the establishment and to the state, while Tony Stark is the outlaw. I can't see Robert Downey Jr fighting for "the man" and upholding the law, while Chris Evans turns against his country.
Of course, with Joss Whedon being as massive a comic book fan as he is, it'll be interesting to see if he tries to evolve the characters in that direction.

The shot of the six Avengers standing together (I guess you could say that the Avengers are assembled :mischief) at 0.41 made me grin. It may sound silly, but despite looking completely different they really work together visually. Despite the fact that they're all completely different, no one looks like the odd one out... or maybe they all do, and that's why it works.
The internet speculation jury is still out on who the bad guys are. Some people say Skrulls, while others say Frost Giants. You can get a brief look at some of Loki's soldiers if you pause at 0.30... personally I think they look the wrong colour for Option B, so I'm inclined to lean towards either A, or some alternative type of giant / goblin from Norse mythology: they have quite a few to choose from. That said, I just paused at 0.36 and the energy beams look a little bit consistant with Option B... so who knows.
Either way, May needs to get here sooner. :ohno

They've actually been remarkably spoiler free - you can thank Joss Whedon for that. The only spoilers that have ever been leaked are the ones that were subsequently confirmed in the trailers: Loki being the villain, and such. Everything else has either immediately been shot down and denied by Joss, or is baseless fan speculation being passed off as spoilers. I'm normally a spoiler junkie, and I know absolutely nothing about what is going to happen in this movie. :ohno
Comics weren't nearly so big in this country as in the US when I was growing up, so I never really got into that when I was little... but in the 80s/90s we had all those Marvel cartoons (X-Men, Iron Man, Fantastic Four, Spider-Man, The Incredible Hulk, et al), so Marvel has always been pretty big on my radar. I always loved the team-up episodes, so all the anticipation for Avengers is making me feel eight again. :3
I really hope it is a massive success: if nothing else, that might convince Marvel to give Joss his own from-scratch franchise to play with, in addition to Avengers 2. Getting him back at the helm of an X-Men story isn't going to happen any time soon, but I'd love to see him get control of a Marvel Studios relaunch of the Fantastic Four: an ensemble story about a disfunctional family with superpowers would be a goldmine for Whedon style storytelling.

Have you read his astonishing x-men run? It was really good and like everything Whedon does the dialogue was great. He really got the characters which is something that makes me extremely hopeful for this Avengers movie. If anyone can figure out the dynamic of an ensemble cast while getting the core characterizations of these iconic heroes right, It's Whedon.

I haven't - but I've heard how good it is. What I meant was, the odds of getting him at the helm of an X-Men movie are slim, bearing in mind all the rights issues and what not. X-Men, Avengers, and Fantastic Four are pretty much the only Whedon-friendly Marvel ensembles.

I was chatting with someone about the Norton / Ruffalo / Hulk issue earlier. I know we've not seen much of Ruffalo-Banner... but thinking about the way the characters balance up and stuff. I imagine that Norton-Banner would probably interact with Tony Stark in the same way that he did with General Ross: not angry, but still confrontational. With the Rogers/Stark confrontations we've already seen, I think that'd maybe do too much. Plus, with Norton the whole "don't make me angry" thing seemed like a warning... whereas Ruffalo looks like the sort of chap who could make it seem more like a threat?

So the studio has officially come out saying the villain in the Avengers are not the Skrulls, but everything else points out that it is. A tie-in board game was announced and photos show figurines that look like Skrulls, as well as production photos from a cancelled tie in game that clearly show Thor bashing Skrulls. It a possibility that the board game and cancelled video game do not directly follow the movie and just throw in some cliche Avengers enemies.

I'm sure many of you will have stumbled across these already, but io9 has bundled together a lot of the recently-released promo clips and things, all in one place (http://io9.com/5903049/5-avengers-clips-assembled-right-here-right-now).
Nothing too spoilery, unless you over-think things (read: unless you're me)... just stuff that you'll have picked up in trailers already, but with a bit of extra time spent giving us a taste of specific characters and relationships.
Among other things, we get a decent look at at what Black Widow will be like as a character. That's right: ScarJo has dialogue and character development, rather than just being there to look pretty. There's also a good amount of Nick Fury, and we also get a decent look at Maria Hill (Cobie Smulders :love).
Given Maria's long history with SHIELD, Fury, and Tony Stark... here's hoping she gets to kick off at Iron Man at some point. :ohno

I have been looking forward to this movie a bit reluctant since it is a Joss Whedon film. I love his work but it always leaves a bitter taste in my mouth when it comes to the general reception.
Joss Whedon does not have a good track record when it comes to movies(Alien 4 screenplay, Serenity[I hate and love this movie]) as well so I tried to keep my expectations low.
Today I read some of the first reviews and they all sounded positiv.:eee:eee
I still ask myself who is getting Jossed at the end or if Joss is able to make an ensemble film without killing off or destroying the life of a loveable character.

I went last night with Droo. We saw the superior 2D version.
I absolutely loved this film. Joss Whedon really did a great job and I really felt his stamp on the writing with the comedy moments.
Iron Man was undoubtedly my favourite in this film, as he's my fave Marvel superhero. But I have to say that all of the Avengers were really great. Once Dr. Banner lets the Big Guy rear his ugly head, things really kick off and the Hulk was a complete badass during his entire screen time.
What got me really excited was the hint that perhaps in a forthcoming Avengers movie they could very well go down the Civil War route - listen to the news flashes towards the end. It's only brief and most definitely not conclusive, but it got me hoping they pursue that direction.
While Prometheus is still pegged to be my personal movie of the year, Avengers looks to be the kick-ass fun movie of the year.

I don't really want Civil War, as that was a horrible storyline and is hated by most fans.
This would be speculation but I would go with these storylines in sequels
Ultron, of course they have to introduce the Henry Pym and Wanda
the Masters of Evil with Baron Zemo, could introduce him in a Captain America sequel
The Infinite Gauntlet, probably one of the best storylines in Marvel comics, but would need to find a way to introduce Adam Warlock

I see what you mean about Civil War, Peter. I'm guessing they probably won't go that route for a good long time, but it's great to see them throwing nods at stuff like then. Not that I expected anything less from Whedon.
The whole movie was fantastic. I especially liked the Hulk - I thought they did a fantastic job of portraying him. If they do follow up with another Hulk movie, I hope that they make it a Hulk movie, and not another Bruce Banner movie... I think they've shown that the Hulk can be a character in his own right. (Though personally, I hope they leave the Hulk as just an Avengers character for now: his interactions with others were a big part of what made him so great to watch.)
I only have one complaint. Agent Coulson? Fuck you, Joss Whedon. :cry

We're seeing it on Friday in 2D as our friend hates 3D with a passion, but we'll probably see it in 3D when we take Owen. It should blow his little mind. :D

While I don't think 3D automatically makes a film better, I don't hate it. Depending on the film and its visual style, 3D could be good. But as long as they continue to offer films in both 2D and 3D and don't force 3D on me, I have no qualms with it. I think Droo would feel the same way.

I usually only like 3D movies when they are in IMAX at least then it seems worth seeing. I can't see the Avengers until Saturday. Wish I could go tomorrow.

I loved it, no complaints whatsoever :love I never doubted you, Joss. The people I went with thought it was a touch long maybe, but that was going to be inevitable really given the scene-setting that was necessary. I am really glad I went to see it in 3D too. The 3D felt like a great extension of how eye-popping the movie as a whole was, in terms of the action, the scope, etc. I also loved how it was used, for instance in a very brief scene when the audience has the POV from the inside of a wrecked car that gets flipped over. It wasn't a big thing, but it just felt really cool!

Great mix of action and humor, and the biggest laughs in the crowd I saw it with came from stuff the Hulk did, especially the sucker punch on Thor and the "puny god" scene.
But poor agent Coulson! :cry

This movie was amazing, every single second of it. Well worth the years of effort that were put in. I love Mark Ruffalo's Bruce Banner, even more than Ed Norton's (and that's saying something).
For those who complained about Coulson dying? That scene was so potent and moving I can't hate it. It was sad, it was reverent, and to see him so mightily avenged was heartwarming and triumphant.
Also, the mirrors between the in-fighting on the Helicarrier and the way the team split into little, 2-man teams was genius. Especially to see Thor and Hulk taking down those huge monsters! And then at the end, just when you thought it couldn't get any more exciting, THANOS. The sequel can't get here soon enough.
Capping the whole tirade with a pair of minor spoilers here on the end: Those who hated Natalie Portman in Thor will be happy to see that she had less than a minute of time in this one...as a face on a hologram board. I laughed when I saw it. And Stan Lee's cameo this time was brilliantly funny and easy to spot.
I could go on, but I have no patience for enormous blocks of gray color, so I'll hold back a little for now. Amazing movie, amazing Friday, I will go to bed so happy tonight.
EDIT: For you guys who were sad over Coulson dying: Whedon says he survived. HAH! Though it dulls my previously-stated reaction and feelings on the event.

3D really has a great deal of problems and this movie showed them all - I left with massive eye strain from trying to keep things in focus and a neck strain from hold my head rigid to keep my sense of perspective. Animated 3D never gives me these problems. And I have to say that this movie's 3D was pretty good but holy moly ouch! And my partner had such issues she had to simply turn away for five minutes to not suffer migraines
Do not see this film in 3D, it adds absolutely nothing to the experience. However a bloody big IMAX with pumping sound in 2D - oh hell yes! I can't be critical of such a good film if the format is fucked, so 2D for what is a absolute must see. Every single second Marvel and co spent bringing this movie together with it's half dozen lead in movies should be congratulated, it was ambitious and it worked.

Went to see this tonight. I fell asleep during the trailers and woke up to find Loki stuck in Magneto's cell, raging at Scarlet Johannson and then I fell asleep again and woke up to an alien invasion!
I suspect I missed key points. That's what I get for going to a 9 PM showing. :(

I thought it was a fantastic movie from start to finish.
The scene after all the credits of them all sitting eating directly after the battle, all shell-shocked and staring off into the distance was so funny it's still making me laugh. The Hulk was amazing, everyone was amazing, and the writing was just impressive.

WTF We sat in the theater for about 5 minutes because we were expecting something like that and nothing happened and now I did some research and found out that this scene was added for the US release. I feel betrayed.

I think we should all write Joss Whedon that we want our money for the tickets back since we did only get the Avengers in a rough cut that was missing 15 seconds!
:D

May 5th, 2012, 08:32:31 AM
Dang! I missed that last 15 seconds...since they had the one major scene setting up the sequel in the middle of the credits, I figured they wouldn't also add something at the end. Derp!
As for Coulson, I was bummed that he was killed (I guess I should add "allegedly" based on Joss Whedon's comment), but it definitely was an eloquent plot device. And he never lost his sense of humor, with the "oh, that's what it does" line after he fired the weapon at Loki. The moment where Nick Fury tossed the blood-soaked trading cards on the table was probably one of the most profound moments in the movie, even though it turned out he was manipulating them. It was a manipulation that worked. And when Tony Stark made the comment about someone else named Phil being really pissed off, it really said a lot.
And speaking of Tony Stark, I really liked the fact that the most selfish member of the team did the most selfless thing at the end.
I know there are rumors of Black Widow and Hawkeye spin-off standalone movies...I'd especially like to see a Hawkeye movie. When he finally got what he wished for, shooting an arrow at Loki's eye and then Loki caught the damn thing, everyone in the theater gasped. That was so cool!

Absolutely - "killing" Coulson was damned profound, and was beautifully done. Having the director justify why he'd done it (Coulson's last words) was a stroke of genius, and it was magnificently handled. I was just absolutely gutted that it happened. Coulson added a really human face to SHIELD, and it's a shame they (maybe) have lost that. I'm sure introducing Maria Hill in this movie was no accident: she's always been a very aggressive character, and so having her instead of Coulson going forward would make SHIELD seem more aggressive, which seems to fit with the portrayal of Nick "Pants On Fire" Fury in this movie... cool, but a lying, manipulative prick at the same time.
And speaking of Tony Stark, I really liked the fact that the most selfish member of the team did the most selfless thing at the end.
I really liked the journey that all the characters went on. With Tony, it was a journey from selfish ass to genuine hero. With Cap, you started out with a guy who was "the best" in his own time, but is suddenly surrounded by titans whose abilities dwarf his; he went from proud and disapproving into into a level-headed but humble leader who was able to send the others to do the things that suited their abilities best. Thor was ridiculously arrogant - he is a god, after all! - but he fought three mortals, all of whom went toe to toe with him... going from "I am the king of Asgard, your problems are petty and beneath me" to someone who was taking orders was quite a change... especially when you bear in mind Thor from the beginning of his solo movie. Banner went from a man afraid of his power to a man who embraced it... surprisingly, thanks to the sage advice of Tony Stark, which is totally not what I would have expected, but worked really well.
Speaking of Stark, actually... I think it's noteworthy that he's starting to become quite leadery as well. He was calling the shots a fair bit during the final fight, he put the work in with the research, had his moment with Banner... bearing in mind the fact that Iron Man lead/leads the Avengers in some incarnations, I wonder if they're intentionally laying the groundwork so that Tony can be a leader too... whether that's because of a Civil War scenario, a Captain America retires / dies and is replaced by someone else scenario, or what.

I hope they play up the differences between Captain America and Iron Man. It'd be fun to see a little of the Civil War "rivalry" bleeding over from the comics to the movies.
Standing by this! Avengers 2: Civil War please :D Some of the most entertaining parts of this film revolved around the heroes conflict with each other.

I totally loved the fact that they all bickered like juvenile high schoolers at the beginning (Tony poking Bruce with a needle to try to piss him off was a particular highlight :lol) and then became a cohesive, supportive team at the end. :cool
Speaking of Captain America, I swear to you that when the cops were like, hey, who are you to be giving us orders, I totally wanted him to say, "I'm Captain America, bitches!" :lol Of course, his actual method of persuading them to listen was much better and much more effective.

I loved that Capt. America stayed in uniform once they gave him one to wear. I get that for movie purposes it was probably to avoid "how did he get into his uniform again so soon" plot holes, but I also feel that Steve was searching for something to ground him in his new time, and when he was given the uniform he latched onto it as something familiar. His total lack of knowledge of references and pop culture was hilarious too. I love that Joss obviously knows and loves each of the characters, and is also gifted enough to weave them all into the narrative in an equal way.

I didnt know what a Shawarma was until I saw the credits scene - then it really clicked we call that a kebab and the joke become 10 times more hilarious. Kebabs are sooo the food of 3am after a hard night on the piss and of course Stark would know where the best Kebabs were and would want one after the fight :D

Saw this today. Highly entertaining. Only a couple of minor quibbles that probably aren't even worth mentioning. The combination of good casting, good acting talent and Joss Whedon's writing and directing style really makes this a step above what we've seen from previous Marvel superhero films (and this is from someone who really likes the first two X-Men films and the two Iron Man films thus far).
Let's hope all the same group does this again in a couple years for the sequel.

Saw this today for the second time, this time in IMAX 3D, and I remain firmly, oh so firmly, of the opinion that 3D is a horrendous gimmick that does not improve the quality of a film at all. It, in fact, affected my experience negatively: it's too dark, too fuzzy, quite the opposite of immersive, and when I took the glasses off in the end I got a pounding headache.
IMAX on the other hand is immersive and awesome. That's the future of cinema, in my opinion, not that other trashy nonsense.
Thankfully, the Avengers is such an excellent film that I was too entertained throughout to be grouchy about it. I went for the IMAX experience, and I'll gladly pay extra for that in the future, but only on the condition it is without 3D slapped on.
