Basically a thread so I don't shit up the "What games have you been playing lately" thread.

I know we got a few folks who are in at least one (and possibly several at one time) play-throughs, so how's that going for y'all?

Also, to make this topical, tomorrow Honest Hearts DLC goes live on 360 and Steam. PS3 gots to wait because your DLC marketplace is a beached whale for the moment.

With any luck tomorrow morning, I'll be chillaxin up in the Utah, buying a few dozen 1911's off of The Burned Man

Here's the link (http://youtu.be/1SHlpJgZaac) to the Honest Hearts trailer because Youtube hates me and wants to embed in iframe or something.

I will probably get it when it's dumped on steam for $10 or something. Yup, I'm a cheapskate when it comes to video games.

May 17th, 2011, 07:17:39 AM
I got mine for $40 off amazon and with the amount of replayability in the game, it's a bargain. I've never felt compelled in an RPG to keep creating characters for new play-throughs. Not even Fallout 3 compelled me to do that. But New Vegas? I've got three characters already and a fourth on the drawing board.

Also, played an hour of Honest Hearts this morning right after download. It's so awesome and biblical-tribally. I want to smear body paint on and throw tomahawks now.

Is there anymore DLC planned for New Vegas? If not, I'll buy it. If so, then I will likely wait for a version that includes the core game along with the complete DLC packs. I bought all the Fallout 3 packs separately, and then bought the complete Game of the Year Edition when it was on offer on Steam for buttons just for the hell of it - I then gave away my boxed copies to my dads mate. I even had Fallout 3 on the PS3 before it game out on PC since I'm so impatient!

I believe there are 2 more packs set to be released in the next couple of months.

So while hangin with the Sorrows tribe, Sanis gets offered a cup of danura tea from somebody named White Bird. Says tea is strong, tea is bitter, wisdom is strong, and wisdom is bitter. Never one to turn down free drugs, Sanis downs the tea and, hoooooly trippin' balls that was a weird trip. Had to go find my path or spirit animal or something and fought Ghost of She, a big angry flaming Yao Guai that split into four of herself when attacked (although I admit the fire and the cloning part is more than likely due to me being high as a kite)

I'm getting some traction now in Fallout 3, which I'm going to talk about here.

Oh you're much further than me in terms of the main quest. I'm currently level 12, almost 13, and I've not even spoke to Moriarty yet to find out where Pops is hiding out. I know where to go, but it feels like cheating. And I don't wanna fork out caps to Moriarty so I'm currently hunting down the skill books to beef up my Speech and flatter him into telling me.

I gotta say, the Combat Shotgun is - for me - the most satisfying thing to use in VATS. At just beyond point-blank range, a headshot is glorious as the raiders body sails backwards in slow-mo while the head gibs scatter all over the place, like little blood-soaked pettles drifting in the wind.

Morg, is this your first playthrough?

Yes, this is my first playthrough. I tried to play it once before but it didn't stick. I was too distracted by other games at the time.

I'm really enjoying being a practical goody two shoes (as is my nature).

What have you been focusing on?

My Repair skill is at 90, my Small Guns is around 81 and I'm working on Science, Speech and Lockpicking now. Got all my stats at 8 aside from Charisma which is at 2.

I'm the same, being nice and helping everyone. When I finish this playthrough I'll likely start again and be a bastard.

I'm playing this like Thief. Lockpick at 100, small guns is at about 80, sneak is around 100, I think. I'm carefully picking my way across the wasteland.

I finally finished Honest Hearts. If you're just a quest junkie going from task to task in your Pip Boy it's a little short, but if you're into exploring and looking beneath the surface it's a good 12 hours of gameplay, maybe more.

Also it's a rather sad story and kinda poignant, and like in the bigger game, you reach a point of no return in it and have to make a decision where you cast your lot, and it took me a lot of time to think about that, because both options have very apparent good / bad sides to them.

Also there is a massive sub-story in which you keep finding caches of supplies and weapons in various caves throughout Zion Canyon left by a survivalist who lost his wife and child in Salt Lake City in the Great War. There are dozens of journal entries on these computers where he tells about his experiences, him blaming himself for not dying with them, talking about his time in the US Army during it's invasion of Canada and how that left him feeling really morally lost. He talks about trying to help good people he crosses, and putting bad ones in the ground, all the while trying his best to not be discovered by anybody. It has a very Jeremiah Johnson feel to it all. He rescues a woman from a bear trap, nurses her to health, falls in love, has a child, and then loses both his new lover and child in the pregnancy, taking him back to square one again.

He tries numerous times to kill himself, but never quite gets the nerve to do it, and what stays his hand for a while are a group of starving and lost children who come into the canyon. He leaves them supplies, books, little notes that he writes telling them they should try to do what's right and tries to basically be a father figure for these kids while still not making contact with them.

In the end, as he's dying of lung cancer and in his 70's (a good 50 years or so after the war), he decides that he's just gonna go end it, so he climbs up to a high promontory, lays down to look at the stars, and lets the cold Utah night do it's work and freeze him to death.

His legacy is the children he watched over in the early 22nd century become the Sorrows Tribe, who revere the survivalist as a watchful God who lives in caves. When they are reached out to by the New Caananites, they fold their tribal believes about the Father Down Below into Mormon teachings.

I don't know why, but the writing in that felt really intense to me. Easily my favorite part of the DLC.

Fallout 3's ending is dumb. I've got Fawkes with me who gives no fucks about radiation and oh by the way you or Lyons has to die? What the shit is this. I put on my radiation suit and took some rad-x which I have a billion of this is stupid. Now I can't cut up radscorpions with a swords or shoot asshole robots.

May 21st, 2011, 11:05:37 AM
Yes F3's ending is weak as hell. It's made a bit better with the Broken Steel DLC but yeah the endgame on the main story arc is the weakest part of that game.

I had such a bizarre experience in NV this afternoon. Having finally won over the Boomers, I went back to the NCR ambassador in the Strip to let him know the good news. I'd just handed in the quest, when one of the NCR military police interupted me and said, "I'm surprised you'd show your face on the Strip after what you've done" and then proceeded to attack me! Boone took him out, so I didn't end up with any negative rep with the NCR but it just seemed completely unprovoked. I don't know if it was because I'd helped the Boomers drag the bomber out of the lake but surely you have to do that to win their approval?

Maybe it was just some kind of bug but it struck me as really odd.

Sanis Prent
May 22nd, 2011, 11:00:37 AM
That's a bug, yeah. A hilarious one though.

I've found something new and amazing. There's a unique gauss rifle, the YCS-186 that's in a mercenary camp a bit north of the Horowitz farmstead. If you get that, have at least 75 energy weapon skill, and load it with max charged microfusion cells, it's the most ridiculous gun holy shit.

I was casually one-shotting deathclaws with it. Alpha males and mothers? Two shots. That's with no other buffs used, like psycho or anything. I can only imagine what that would be like.

Morg - if you haven't been, check out the National Guard Depot just to the north of the DC ruins - south of Cantebury Commons if you need a point of reference. It's on the outside of the 'wall of rubble' that encloses the DC Ruins area. near the eastern edge of the map. If you follow the ruined freeway from the Scrapyard then head East once you get to the pit with sewer tunnels exposed, you'll come to it.

Lots of goodies inside, but be careful!

Also I gotta say on my Sanis play-through that I'm really really conflicted about letting the Brotherhood of Steel survive. I let cannibals off easy. Bands of pillaging drug-running raiders? They're fine by me. And even while I'm hated by the Powder Gangers, I at least let the guys in Vault 19 have a second chance at things.

But no, the fucking Brotherhood are unbelievable assholes even when compared to this delightful group of reprobates. If you're willing to massacre an entire Followers of the Apocalypse outpost just because somebody might be a little open source with technology and ways to help people out who need it, I'm sorry but you gotta go.

I'm making a bit of headway with the main quest now. I need to beef up my science skill before I go to the RobCo Factory for the final part of the Wateland Survival Guide, as well as before I go get the Virgo II dish for Three Dog. So I'm hunting for skill books in the nasty northern territories right now.

May 29th, 2011, 06:58:09 PM
Oh man, I remember grinding for the Wasteland Survival guide quest. It was pretty fun :)

Also speaking of the Three Dog quest, I assume you've already fought the Behemoth at GNN, yes? How was that?

Cool thing about the Wasteland Survival Guide is that it's a skill book you can use in F:NV. It's +3 to your survival stats :)

Peter McCoy
May 29th, 2011, 09:30:42 PM
I managed quite well outside the GNR building; one of the muties had a Tri-Beam Laser Rifle which I looted :)

Just doing some side quests before I go for the dish in the museum. I wanna have my science skill high enough so that when I repair Three Dog's signal, it boosts it so I can hear it from anywhere :)

Level 16, got the T-51b Power Armor, repaired the GNR dish so I can listen to Three Dog right up north by the SatComm Arrays :)

I looted a rifle called Ol' Painless and I'm in love with it. I did have over 400 .32 rounds but I'm down to my last 50 or so. It's seen me through pretyt much every long-range confrontation since I picked it up.

Well Daddy is dead. Boo-hoo. But I can now wear all that awesome Power Armor I looted. Got a Brotherhood set, an Enclave set, a Hellfire set as well as the T-51b set and a Tesla set. I'm spoilt for choice. Now I need to start hunting for some unique weapons and schematics.

And OMG! I just read on the Fallout wiki that it's possible to kill a Super Mutant Behemoth with a single sneak attack critical headshot from The Terrible Shotgun (http://fallout.wikia.com/wiki/The_Terrible_Shotgun) if you have the right perks and skill level. Awesome!!!

Sanis Prent
May 31st, 2011, 09:27:09 AM
Heh, I collected power armor in my game too. If you want a set that looks really awesome, the main villain in the Pitt, Ashur, wears some impressive armor. I think it's not as good stats wise as the Enclave stuff, but I sacrificed some functionality in the name of fashion, because it's amazing.

Also, if you haven't gotten Mr. Sandman as a perk, you ought to if you're decently sneaky. I used it in New Vegas to kill almost every member of the Brotherhood of Steel in their sleep :)

Peter McCoy
May 31st, 2011, 12:17:36 PM
My sneak is awful. I really need to level it.

I got Lincoln's Repeater. OMG I am in love with this gun! WTB .44 ammo!

Currently skulking around Vault 87 looking for the G.E.C.K

I may just complete the vanilla Fallout 3 content then move on to Fallout: New Vegas - I can always do the DLC's when I re-play Fallout 3 - which will be straight after New Vegas knowing me. I'm sooooo looking forward to playing the whole thing in Hardcore mode :)

Sanis Prent
May 31st, 2011, 12:35:50 PM
To give you an idea of how far things get turned on their ear in New Vegas try this out:

Fallout 3, you're fighting alongside the Brotherhood of Steel against the Enclave and Super Mutants, right?

In New Vegas, I wiped the Brotherhood out to a man, I'm buddies with the Enclave, and I'm more or less okay with Super Mutants to some degree. And to top it off, I'm not a bad guy.

Peter McCoy
Jun 1st, 2011, 01:11:31 AM
I'm quite excited about the new faction/reputation system. In Fallout 3 it's pretty weak - I've seen Brotherhood Outcasts attack Lyons Loyalists in Fallout 3 but other than that, it's mainly Super Mutants attacking anyone and anything. It'll be cool to see more dynamic between the various groups.

I wish there was a way to disable fast travel as well. I wanna play it as realistically as possible. I'll try not to use it at all if I can help it.

Sanis Prent

So I started playing Dead Money DLC the other night.

Holy shit, it's a lot harder than the rest of New Vegas / Honest Hearts. It's not unplayable but you definitely have to think pretty hard about what you do, and there's a much thinner margin of error to stay alive.

There's not a lot in the way of cool gear that I've seen so far at least, but the cool thing is that the companion NPC's are very well written and extremely interesting.

Peter McCoy
Jun 3rd, 2011, 08:31:35 PM
I'm very nearly ready to start New Vegas. I've just left Raven Rock and have Fawkes as a companion. Just gotta return to the Citadel to start the final quest. But first I'm scouring the Wasteland for skillbooks to beef up my Big Guns skill. I wanna wreak havoc with a Plasma Rifle! :) Should be done with the main quest tomorrow night and ready to start New Vegas on Sunday. I will play that right through then return to Fallout 3's DLC.

So I've been considering giving Fallout 3 another try. I've tried it a few times and I get as far as leaving the vault and suddenly I lose all interest in playing. It's a strange thing and has happened the three times I've attempted to play the game. I am about to make a third attempt and was wondering if there was a preference between the PC and console versions. The console version is the only one I've tried so I was curious is the PC version was more enjoyable. I have a PC to power it. Easy. But on levels of enjoyment or ease of play I was curious as to which one was preferred by anyone who has tried/played on both platforms.

Peter McCoy
Jun 4th, 2011, 05:17:40 PM
I got to Level 14 on the PS3 version and then bought the PC version as soon as it was released. It's by far the superior version for controls (FPS + Mouse 'n' Keyboard = WIN) as well as visuals. Not only that but there's a shitload of community-made content thanks to the G.E.C.K modding tools that allow you to build your own locations and put them into the Capital Wasteland if that's your thing. I remember a mod that put a secret underground base beneath the Red Rocket in Springvale.

Finished the main quest. That was an intense approach to the purifier. Liberty Prime kicks some serious ass! I have more power armor than I k now what to do with, as well as lots and lots and lots of ammo for energy weapons. I'm in a good position for when I return to do the DLC.

Vault 34 sucks a lot but the payoff is very very very worth it. Wait until you have at least 30 rad aways and 30 rad x's in your inventory before going down there though! It's also a really good idea to get the space suit from Repconn and activate Veronica's quest where she asks about the pulse gun.

Peter McCoy
Jun 7th, 2011, 12:54:16 AM
This is frustrating. I have 50 minutes of footage ready to be converted. But bloody Avidemux doesn't like it. When I try to run the jobs the program crashes. Never did this with Minecraft. Surely it's not the graphics. Avidemux doesn't see graphics, it just sees the video data I've recorded in Fraps. I might try doing a very brief Minecraft video to see if that works or if it's something wrong with the program. I've re-installed it already with no joy. The other thing I might try is doing it in Windows Live Movie Maker but cutting it up into 10-minute sections for uploading to Youtube is a bit faffy - Avidemux let you split it into jobs of varying length and then compile them all in one go as separate videos.

I'm hoping to get them uploaded this afternoon after work. I'm still in Goodsprings, done the first quest with the gecko's and met some of the people in town. Nothing major yet, although I did make one decision in the heat of the moment which may come back to haunt me. LOL!

Well four of the five video's had processed. But when I played them back the quality was awful, I dunno what the problem was. I've since redone them in Windows Live Movie maker and the quality is great. I'm not as happy with the presentation - with Adobe Premier I'd used fade from black to the New Vegas logo and then fade into the video, with the opposite at the end. This is just the footage as-is but the quality is good whereas the other one was something I wouldn't wish on anybody, lol.

I'll try to re-do them at some point with the title and outro fades.

Just uploading them now so shouldn't be too long. I had to re-cut them as what I thought were 10-minute video's with a 10 second overlap ended up as an epic fail, I somehow managed to cut a good minute or so by mistake.

UPDATE: The video is 49 minutes, split into 5 parts. Part 5 is just saving now. Should be about 20 more minutes before the premiere :p I LOVE how quick Windows Live Movie Maker is!

I figured out why the quality was awful when I encoded it with Adobe Premiere - the raw footage was 30FPS, I encoded at 60FPS.

Just did a minute of my existing footage where I fight the gecko's. The quality was pretyt much the same as what you guys have watched. And it was quite quick. A minute took two to encode. So the next set of video's should be accompanied by a title and outro sequence :) Speaking of which, everyone's in bed, so there should be no vocal interruptions. Time to crack on with the game and record episode 2 methinks :) I think I have to help Ringo before he'll teach me Caravan now that I've offered to help him.

Simms died in all my playthroughs. Is this avoidable?

Yeah. The only way to save the guy is to go into VATS as soon as Burke pulls his weapon (if you decide to tell Simms about Burke). A couple of head shots and his eyeballs go flying. Burke can't get a shot off, or else Simms dies. The Chinese Assault rifle was a cold comfort against Harden's "Now that my dad's gone..." routine.

Also... THAT'S ONE BIG FUCKING SUPER MUTANT. Are there Behemoths in New Vegas?

Sanis Prent
Jun 27th, 2011, 12:52:28 PM
No behemoths in New Vegas. But deathclaws are much much nastier, plus there are alpha males, mothers, and the legendary deathclaw, which would all trounce 12 behemoths

Vince
Jun 27th, 2011, 01:08:19 PM
...Whoopee! And I have to fight a bunch o' Deathclaws here too, don't I? Mirelurks, Deathclaws, and Super Mutants oh my. Besides, as of the moment, the Behemoth holds the crown of the funniest Fallout moment I've played so far.

11/280 health, curled up into the foetal position in a corner in the dilapidated building across from the GNR Building while the Behemoth rampages outside. Thankfully I had some stimpacks, though they were pretty much wasted; the Behemoth fell, and I went on to Three Dog without even being in danger.

Can someone give me a TLDR summary about the DLC, are they worth it?

Sanis Prent
Jul 4th, 2011, 03:57:35 PM
I enjoyed both. Dead Money is a bit frantic and a lot deadlier than the rest of the game, and the loot is generally not good, but the story and companions are awesome.

Honest Hearts is really fun and different, and if you scrounge you get your full money's worth. If you just wanna do the main quest and nothing more it's a bit short, so it pays to explore

Yog

Well, after a massive delay, my next New Vegas episode should be up tomorrow. 90 minutes of footage split into 3 video's providing the render is alright. I'm letting it render over night - gonna watch A New Hope in bed now. G'night all!

I've been putting it off until I was able to edit the footage with something other than Windows Live Movie Maker and still have decent quality. The three files are done now, I just need to trim a bit of fat and then upload them - Windows Live Movie maker will be fine for that.

Peter McCoy
Jul 10th, 2011, 10:10:25 AM
Over the course of the evening today I imagine. 30 minute parts wrre too big in size so I'll make them roughly 15 minutes each - for a total of 6 parts. Episode 3, Part 1 is saving/uploading as we speak. I was going to keep the video's private until they're all uploaded unless you wanna watch them as soon as they are available?

Dasquian Belargic
Jul 10th, 2011, 02:07:26 PM

The playlist (http://www.youtube.com/playlist?p=PLEC5B3CCB0065C4A5) has been updated with Episode 3 - complete with intro and outro sequences, albeit basic ones. Animations and music will follow once I know how to make 'em look/sound good!

After editing parts that were essentially just me looking at menu's for ages, it turned out to be 1 hour and 20 minutes. Enjoy!

I apologise if I missed parts that are boring - I'll try to cut everything crappy in future.

I accepted a couple of quests from Forlorn Hope and walked to Helios One to find a few missing NCR soldiers, upon arriving there all the soldiers outside opened fire upon me and all I did in between was kill a few young cazadores. And yes, I sent all the power to the Strip and McCarran as requested for the NCR, my rep was great and suddenly, when I checked my pipboy, all my rep except for Goodsprings and Novac had totally disappeared.

The Legion quest tree isn't as big as NCR's, but there's some overlap and it can be pretty fun. My Legion guy is basically Lucius Vorenus from HBO's Rome, which is to say he's relatively morally upright in a morally bankrupt society if that makes sense. He doesn't lie, he doesn't cheat, he doesn't steal. He will kill you honestly.

I kinda fast-tracked Old World Blues so I could beat it and quickly jump into Lonesome Road. I love the atmosphere and everything about Old World Blues with the exception of the enemies being ridiculous bullet sponges when you're at a high level (I played it at level 40-44). Being a pistoleer character who gets his hitting power by using hot ammo (max charge energy cells and .45 Super, .45-70 Government SWC Match, etc) it meant I was absolutely killing my best guns to stay alive, and constantly had to scrounge for other guns to use for repair, had to find repair kits, or pay out of pocket to fix guns and armor. Cost me a good 20,000 caps to stay afloat.

The payoff is worth it. The story, atmosphere, environment, and the feel are straight out of Fallout 2 style irreverence, and it's so full of pulp SCIENCE that I keep laughing throughout.

The good news is that I can go back to Big MT any time and continue exploring other areas, which I intend to do. The good news with Lonesome Road is that if I want to go to the Mojave at any point during it, I can fast travel out, so I keep my options open.

So far, Lonesome Road is super cool. Can't bring companions, but you find out very quickly that there is another, better ED-E

Dasquian Belargic
Sep 21st, 2011, 10:49:14 AM
My guy just battled Benny to death in the arena. I figure if I'm going down the path of being a Legion badass, I need to start proving myself early on.

Sanis Prent
Sep 21st, 2011, 03:26:33 PM
There is a weapon in Lonesome Road called Red Glare. As in, the rocket's red glare from Star Spangled Banner fame.

http://i127.photobucket.com/albums/p156/LoungieMu/340af8cb.jpg

It is a semi-automatic sniper rocket launcher. With a magazine of 13 rockets. Think about that for a moment.

Also it can be modified with faster rate of fire, faster rocket speed, and a better scope (for friggin 40,000 caps!)

Also it's got a big ol' Old World flag on it. It's basically AMERICA, the gun.

Also the upgrades that ED-E, version 2 have are transferrable to his cousin in the Mojave, and they're incredible. You can fully repair your weapon for free, you can craft energy ammo and bullets, you can periodically get stipends of energy cells, microfusion cells, electron charge packs, and satchel charges, and there are probably a lot more possible upgrades you can get. Essentially this makes ED-E the absolute most essential companion in the game, if he wasn't already (PS, he was)

Finally getting into New Vegas. The Legion pretyt much want to bathe in my entrails at the moment, and I'm on deathly terms with the Powder Gangers after wiping out everyone at the NCR Correctional Facility. But since Boone's got my back, I'm not bothered. Just sorted out the hostage situation at Boulder City and my next task is to head up to New Vegas to confront Benny in the Tops Casino. I think I'll do a few side quests first though, level up a bit and acquire some better gear.

Haha, why haven't I done this RoboDog quest before? Boone just flipped at me because I put a Legion dogs brain into Rex!

Sanis Prent
Sep 23rd, 2011, 05:50:29 PM
I think that's the only one that's coded as a rally point. I know my first saved game bugged on me to where I couldn't even dispatch my buddies to it at all, so I kinda got used to staying wherever and travelling to places for other people. I do kinda wish you could pick between four different spots though. The hotel room in Novac is always a popular headquarters.

If you play Old World Blues, you get a really nice fort to use, but it's not somewhere you can bring companions to. Still, you get an item at the end of the DLC that is basically a matter teleporter that will let you travel instantly to Big MT from any point in the Mojave wasteland.

Dead Money

I just triggered the Gala Event and got inside the casino, at last. I gues now the twist will be that me and my 'companions' are fighting against each other, rather than being forced to work together?

The Sierra Madre has totally got me on edge :uhoh

Sanis Prent
Sep 26th, 2011, 05:47:46 PM
Yeah Dead Money is creepy and nerve racking at times. It was a culture shock with how I play Sanis, which usually involves not giving a fuck and blowing money on stupid shit. I had to scrounge hard in that game. Now that you've triggered the gala event and entered the casino you're into the real interesting part of the DLC. Your assumptions are mostly correct, yes. Potentially all the way correct, depending on how you handle things.

I got along just fine with Christine, as well as Dog/God. Dean Domino is a dick, though. Had to end him.

Sanis Prent
Sep 27th, 2011, 07:07:30 PM
I really liked how they implemented the moral of the story in Sierra Madre. I would have had Sanis abide by it, but I took it as a challenge to beat an unbeatable test, like Kirk cheating on the Kobayashi Maru. It fit Sanis, and since he's a greedy fucker, it made complete sense.

And now I'm using all that gold to bankroll the Gun Runner's Arsenal collection.

I'm wandering around Zion in my Centurion armor. I can't believe that no one has commented on that. Not Joshua, not Daniel, no one seems to notice that I am one of Caesar's minions.

I'm so glad I picked up the Sneering Imperialist perk before starting this DLC. I like the dialogue options it gives you :lol

I just finished Honest Hearts. I was hoping for some kind of showdown with the Burned Man, where I murdered him in Caesar's name, but alas no.

Something I found a little odd at the end of the quest.. A footlocker full of special clothing and weaponry, from various characters in the story. It seemed so strange to have it all just bundled together. But hey, now I'm wandering around dressed like Joshua Graham in a park rangers hat!

Yeah that kinda irked me that they just went "Welp, here's all this stuff" when they could've neatly tied it together with an in-storyline reason for you to get all that gear.

BTW did you find all the survivalist stuff? There's some really good unique gear in there, but the real treat is the storyline. It kinda runs parallel to the main storyline, and fills in a lot of what's going on.

Did you Fight the White Legs or did you take the Grand Staircase and lead the Sorrows out of Zion?

Dasquian Belargic

We fought the White Legs! I had fun sneaking most of the way to their camp with Joshua, sniping White Legs with my hunting rifle.

I didn't explore all of the valley, to be honest. I found the setting kind of lacking, after the Sierra Madre, but I'm aware that you can go back and visit the valley even after finishing the main story so I might go tromping around some more later.

Captain Untouchable

I've never played a game like Fallout before, so I didn't really plan what I was doing in advance. I usually play a sort of sniper / archer / ranger type combination, so I focused mainly on the stuff that was going to give me decent gun skills and sneaking skills - planning on taking things down before they get close enough to do any real damage.

I'm still getting used to the controls and concepts, so I've had a couple of mishaps. I accidentally shot the Prospector in the face while trying to talk to him, and the guy in the General Store caught me stealing things to sell back to him... but that gave me a cool-sounding reputation with the town so I figured I'd roll with it rather than go back to an earlier save.

No idea how my build will pan out in the long run. I have no plan... I'm just winging it for a change!

Dasquian Belargic
Dec 2nd, 2011, 12:33:29 PM
Sniper is fun to play in New Vegas, especially if you stick with one of the earlier companion characters you find, Boone. He is an awesome sniper too and gives you a spotters perk that lets you see enemies from a distance much more quickly. Stalking through the Mojave with him at your side makes for a hell of a lot of long-distance headshotting :swoon:

Peter McCoy
Dec 2nd, 2011, 02:04:58 PM
I've got Boone as a companion along with the Eyebot whose name escapes me. And yeah, that Spotter perk is awesome - enemies have a sort of pink glow to them when you aim down the sight which shows up really well, especially at night.

I forget where I'm up to with my save. I think I've just gotten to The Strip and have to go see some guy about the chip. Something like that anyway!

HOW THE FUCK IS IT PAST MIDNIGHT ALREADY?! :|

I'm totally rocking the sniper rifle right now. I haven't progressed massively far through the game as yet - I'm on my way south from Primm at the moment. I've spent most of the time field testing weapons to decide which combinations work for me, and have set myself up with a little base in the Nevada Highway Patrol Station.

I've also been picking up and selling every empty bottle, can, and what-not I can find: I may be a thieving bastard who kills people from a distance without provocation, but I care about the environment. :colbert

Sanis Prent
Dec 2nd, 2011, 07:28:53 PM
The best part is that it's pretty forgiving for you to actually role play. You can decide if your character has certain quirks about them and enforce them yourself. There was nothing keeping my Sanis build from going with one-handed guns almost all the time, that was just my preference when I made him. You get a lot of freedom, almost to the point where its easy to lose yourself.

Sniper build is probably the sort of build most folks go with the first time through, so that's a good one to give you a feel for the world. Once you beat the game and play as another character (and you will do this many times) you will not only ally yourself to different causes, but explore different preferences.

My first NCR guy was a sniper survivalist sort. My Yes Man run is with Sanis, and he's more about soft skills like speech and barter and stealing shit. Legion character is up close and personal with melee and unarmed weapons. My House character is happy with all things explosions.

Captain Untouchable
Dec 3rd, 2011, 09:17:16 AM
Caesar's days are numbered.

I was planning on being friendly to the Legion, because frankly they seemed awesome. I ended up annoying the NCR a little bit initially - mainly because I hit the Powder Gangers camp on the road to the NCR prison, and may accidentally have shot some of the guards as well. (I was sniping from too far away to see whether they were red or yellow on my compass doodad; they moved, so I took 'em down)

Then I went to Nipton. Along the way, I looted a whole bunch of stuff, and wound out encumbered. I toyed with the idea of turning back, or dumping some stuff in a crate en route to come back for it later, but I thought screw it: I'll just push on to Nipton and sell stuff as soon as I get to the store.

Caesar thwarted that plan quite drastically. So I killed his dogs. And some of his soldiers. Maybe liberated a few slaves... aligned myself with the NCR... and then all of a sudden, he starts sending groups of soldiers to take Boone and me down. Talk about over-reacting, huh? :mischief

I've now moved base camp from the Nevada Highway Patrol Station to the motel by the T-Rex in Novac. Not only is it a safer place to fast-transport to, it's nice and convenient for a store and for the mail box. And there's a fucking T-Rex. :eee

I'm still playing around with the guns. I can't quite get the hang of the grenade launcher (even when I used the weird bullet-time / aim for a body part thing it still blew up about twenty feet behind the target, but when I aim manually they always fall way short of that distance... I dunno), and I haven't been all that thrilled by the shotgun.

I'm pretty much playing as if it's my Infiltrator from Mass Effect 2 - Sniper Rifle for very long range, with a Service Rifle for long to medium range, a Submachine Gun for tearing it up if they get too close; and a scoped-out 9mm pistol for close quarters / be more careful with your shooting so you don't kill Boone type stuff.

I'm finding the controls a little difficult still. I've mostly got over trying to hit Esc to go into the inventory/menu instead of Tab, and I'm finding it a little frustrating that "OK" and "Loot All" are the same key, whereas "Cancel" and "Exit" are separate ones - I've accidentally re-looted the contents of a container that I'd just filled up more than a few times. I only just found out you can holster your weapon (by accident); and is there a torch on the pip boy? If there isn't, there should be; and if there is, how the hell do I turn it on? >_<

My minor niggles are purely UI related though. I am massively enjoying the game... hopefully I'll be able to drag myself away in time to get on Skype tomorrow!

The NCRCF prison was taken over by the Powder Gangers anyway so you won't get into trouble by capping the guards, at least not with the NCR.

As far as Novac, yeah it's an awesome base, and probably the best option until you get into Vegas itself.

With the grenade launcher, just keep in mind two things. (1) Your proficiency with that weapon is modified by your Explosives skill, not your guns skill and (2) it fires in a parabolic trajectory, rather than a linear one. If you up your explosives, you'll be better at it, but you have to ask yourself if it's worth it. This game more or less makes it to your advantage to pick a few skill sets and play styles and stick to it. Yes if you go through all the add-ons and don't cap your exp at level 30 you'll be God King of the Mojave, but you'll spend a lion's share of your time as a specialist if you want to succeed.

Shotgun is a weapon that is only okay at first. It's value comes from modified ammunition and from certain perks you get with that weapon (Shotgun Surgeon, And Stay Back, etc). Think of it as kind of a ranged/melee hybrid. It's Sanis's primary weapon (using a unique sawn-off double barrel gun) because it's a perfect stand-off weapon of last resort. With Sanis, I not only get the mods the special shell types give me, but also damage mod due to the unique weapon, x2 for the two barrels, at full power at close range, and then perks kick in which allow me to ignore 10 points of enemy DT when I hit, and gives me a high chance of a knockdown. It's a weapon that gets extremely useful when you specialize for it.

Your pip boy does have a light on it, but I don't know PC controls, so

Captain Untouchable
Dec 3rd, 2011, 09:57:33 AM
Yeah, I guessed it was parabolic. It just seems really clunky and unpredictable - I ended up doing as much damage to myself as my enemies, so I've pretty much retired it!

Loving the Recharger Pistol (or whatever it's called). Was an awesome weapon for ownaging the invisible trolls in Zombie Jesus' basement. Unfortunately it looks like a prop from Flash Gordon or something, so it doesn't quite fit with the post-apocalyptic red beret look I've got going right now.

In terms of weapons mods: is each mod only available from a specific place, or will I suddenly get to New Vegas and be able to buy them all from Walmart? I got less than a half-dozen vendors at the moment, and they seem to cater to a specific gun each; wondering if I'll have to hunt down someone in particular to trick out my SMG and what-not.

Recharger gun owns so hard. Mind you it's energy modded, so make sure you're going down that path. Even if you aren't, the ability to go pew pew pew and whittle away chump enemies with a thousand cuts is a good ammo saver for guns you want to use on tougher baddies, or maybe you want to keep a particular weapon from degrading.

Mods for guns are here and there. Did you download the weapon packs and add-ons? The weapon packs will sprinkle uniques and mods in all sorts of places.

Good places for guns, as Christin said, the Gun Runners are usually your best source for gunpowder weapons. I'd also recommend Mick & Ralph's in Freeside when you get closer to Vegas. They're kind of the Gun Runners competition and deal on the hush.

Aside from them, if you branch into energy weapons, the Van Graff's in Freeside are also good suppliers, and if you get into the Brotherhood, they've got a good armorer there as well.

That aside, you'll find lots of people that will sell you shit, but its a mixed bag.

Prior to working out how to turn the torch on (PRESS + HOLD the Pip Boy button... so I couldn't even have stumbled on it by pressing every key), I was using the Recharger to help fight enemies in the dark - it threw out more light than the muzzle flash on my semi-auto, which was a big help against Stealth Boys.

I haven't invested anything in energy weapons, so I won't be dwelling with it unfortunately - I guess I'll just have to re-play at some point and go nutso with laser guns.

I'm going to have a play around / experiment with the various guns I've accumulated - try to come up with a combination of firepower, weight, and ammo types that works. I'm currently carrying three ammo types: one for rifles, one for SMG, and one for my pistol. The only downside is that when I run out of rifle ammo that's my long range stopping power gone. Might try out the Cowboy Rifle for a bit: especially since I can mod that to drastically reduce the weight.

ED-E is a pretty awesome companion to have around, though. The only issue I've encountered is that he drops faction armour (in an "I can't equip this!" *throw on floor* sort of way)... other than that, he's a pretty decent little pack horse with a laser cannon attached.

Companion traits:

ED-E: Enhanced Sensors give you much higher perception when he's in your party
Rex: Spots items for you
Boone: detects enemies when sniping
Veronica: can craft workbench items herself without needing a bench.
Arcade: gives you healing perks
Cass: gives you bonuses when you drink whiskey and you no longer get booze withdrawal symptoms.
Lilly: gives you extended use time with stealth boys, which also give you an attack bonus when attacking under stealth.
Raul: Either gives you repair bonuses, or you have an option when finishing his quest so he deals massive damage bonuses.

Of course there's also the DLC companions (Dog/God, Christine Royce, Dean Domino, Roxie, Follows Chalk, Waking Cloud, Joshua Graham, and ED-E v2) but we'll come to those later :)

I believe you can have up to four companions. As Jenny said, you can have one human and one non-human companion, such as Boone and ED-E. But if you are Liked by NCR you can have a trooper or ranger accompany you also (if they fall in combat you can radio for another one after waiting a day), and when in Freeside you can hire a bodyguard for 100 caps but they are with you only while you remain in Freeside.) So if you wanted to start some shit in Freeside you can have a small army for the deed. Otherwise it's a maximum of four including yourself. Worth remembering.

Vault 22 is the first time I've actually found myself "scared" by a computer game. Don't get me wrong - it's not like I was terrified and went crying to my mother... but between the dark atmosphere, the odd noises, and those green critters that are suddenly RIGHT THERE when you turn around had me properly on edge the whole time I was there.

Some of the world building in this game is phenomenal. I never realised it was possible for a game to take "some tunnels underground" and make them feel so insanely different from one another. I love that the above ground is often so similar by comparison too: it makes the Mojave seem more barren somehow.

As great as some games are today, my current fave being Skyrim followed by Fallout 3, System Shock 2 is - despite its aged looks - one of the greatest games I've ever had the pleasure of playing a bilion times. The enemies are creepy as fuck, the level design is great, the story as well as its method of delivery are superb. You basically learn whats happened by finding audio logs - Bioshock did the same thing more recently. And the music, while brilliant, can detract from the ambience and spookiness of the environment so I usually have it off. But there's no question that it's a perfect soundtrack for a cyberpunk game.

There are similarities between System Shock 2 and Fallout 3/NV. The RPG element, the looting of corpses, the hacking, But the experiences are very different. While Fallout offers an epic journey across an open landscape of discovery, System Shock 2 is a claustrophobic nightmare in deep space. If you ever played Dead Space and enjoyed Isaac's ordeal/setting, you really should check out System Shock 2.

System Shock 2 is - despite its aged looks - one of the greatest games I've ever had the pleasure of playing a bilion times.

System Shock 2 is one of the very very few horror-scary games I like, mostly due to the story's delivery. Bioshock did it well, making some very powerful characters (Andrew Ryan is my friend's libertarian hero, despite the fact he's the game's villain), and coupling it with the mystery aspect of learning everything about what happened and most importantly, getting the hell out of there.

One of the better decisions was leaving the player character mostly undefined (Which Bioshock 2 made the mistake of not doing, though the game was still fairly strong); it allows for the stickman comic vs. art dichotomy: the circle of the stickman's head allows us to make it into a mirror, whereas the more detailed the art, the less of ourselves we see in it. The more detailed the past of a main character, the less emotional connection we have with him/her. It wasn't the dude in the game that was being chased down by mutated people screaming "I'm sorry!", it was the me in the game being scared crapless by the emptiness of the surroundings.

I am still playing Fallout 3 but I have so much fun being back in the wasteland after over a decade.

I now have the level 22 perk that completly refills your Action if you make a kill in VATS. Last night I mowed through a group of 7 super mutant brutes without ever running out of Action.

Vats really makes this game an awesome experience since the normal run and gun mechanics are very clunky and unresponsive... 3rd Person is still pretty much unplayable and this game is laking a good cover system.

It is kind of funny that I waited so long to wear power armor but now I do not use it because my chinese stealth armor makes me look like Grey Fox from Metal Gear Solid.

Fallout 3 has a great cover system. Stand behind something solid when you get shot at. Nuff said. I've been ambushed while on 1% health bygroups of half a dozen supermutants with nothing but a pistol and a tree to hide behind and survived.

I have at last returned to New Vegas :cool

Reloaded a save where apparently I was in a factory surrounded by 4 crazed Mr. Handy's!

Proceed to stun-lock every single one of them with Big Boomer and shred the robots with buckshot >D

And Stay Back is an awesome perk btw.
