"Nice to meet you Rose, run for your life!"

I'm finally starting to watch Doctor Who! Starting with the recent revival - series 1, episode 1 - Rose. I know Liz is also, so we can compare notes here!

Thread says spoilers, but please, confine your spoilers to where Liz and I are in our watching! :D

After seeing your post on Facebook, I popped in my series 1 DVD and started watching too! Let us know how you liked it once the episode is over, and I can answer any questions that you might have without you accidentally spoiling yourself by searching for something on Google (..I'm looking at you, Liz ;))

Jackie: I'm in my dressing gown.
The Doctor: Yes, you are.
Jackie: There's a strange man in my bedroom.
The Doctor: Yes, there is.
Jackie: Anything could happen.
The Doctor: ...No :)

I enjoyed it! I will never feel comfortable around a mannequin again. That exchange you quoted between Rose's mum and the Doctor was hilarious. :lol No specific questions, other than why exactly Rose was with that stupid guy and why did it take so long for her to realize he was plastic!

I am passably familiar with the story conceits of the series, and now I am on to episode two! The year 5 Billion - The End of the World!

Is there some channel running a marathon of episodes?

It did seem to take Rose a looong time to realise that she was with plastic Mickey, especially when his hair looked so goofy. I guess that can only be explained by the fact that she was just so baffled by everything that was going on around her that she didn't notice Mickey being.. stranger than usual!

Here's a relevant picture from the Doctor Who exhibition that came to Newcastle - and yes they were anamatronics. They twitched and turned their heads :uhoh

Random trivia fact(s) for the (first) episode:

The robot manequins ("Autons") first appeared in Doctor Who back in 1970, in the first episode with Jon Pertwee, the third Doctor. This was the first Doctor Who episode in colour... making the Autons the first monsters to appear in colour.

Stephen Moffat's episodes - 1x09 "The Empty Child" and 1x10 "The Doctor Dances" - are highlights of this series for me. Hopefully you'll see why he's been made Head Writer from series 5 onwards :)

There are some properly terrifying ones to come. There's kind of a cult thing in the UK where you're meant to watch Doctor Who from behind the sofa, so you're in a better position to hide when the scaries come on. :ohno

What I find completely brilliant is that the show is ridiculously scary at times. It inspires me greatly.

I think the show's real stroke of genius is to make things that are relatively normal - and perhaps even a little silly at times - into something scary. It works, because it preys on where fear has never gone before.

Ok I've seen the first three, watched The Unquiet Dead last night. I think its refreshing that the Doctor isn't omniscient - he makes a genuine mistake this episode.

Another thing I loved in the first episode was when Rose enters the TARDIS for the first time. The camera stays on her face but we know what she's seeing (well I did anyway)... and then she goes out and runs around the police box like a crazy person. It felt like a real reaction someone would have being presented with the same situation. :)

Saved The Empty Child for tonight. Oooh.

I love the Doctor`s enthusiasm during all the madness - personally I`d be finding a cupboard where I could hidde with my eyes shut and me ears stopped, but he launches into the chaos with such childlike glee. It`s fantastic. :lol

But then you catch glimpses of his serious face and it`s hardcore, man.

Finally watched The Empty Child & The Doctor Dances (also Boom Town). Further thoughts to come.

THOUGHTS THAT CAME:

Let it just be said that it is a good thing there were no water bottles near me while I was watching the two-parter. Things could have gotten ugly, yo.

The very first mummy and glimpse of the kid on the roof reduced me to bundle of nerves and I spent the rest of the time watching through my fingers and alternatively screaming and kicking the air in savage defense. Sometimes both. The worst parts were watching people's faces mutate into the gask masks - horrifying D= and when the sister/mummy is hiding beneath the table and creepy Jamie is walking around looking for her and all you see from beneath the tablecloth are his legs. The tension there was so thick and when she made a break for it and he whipped around I nearly pissed myself in fright!

Jack Harkness is a legend! John Barrowman is awesome in the part.

I'm currently on Series 2. I think I've got two episodes to go - just watched the one with Peter Kay - brilliant! Hehe! Going to see him in November.

I still have yet to come properly around to Captain Jack but he's slowly wearing me down, damn him. What a bastard. :shakefist

Annnnd that's the first series done!

Have to say, there are a lot of moments and creatures in this show so far that have scared the pants off me but the Daleks aren't included. I can't even take them seriously - they're like little saltshakers with warbly voices and obsessive personalities. :lol

But I really enjoyed the finale and there were a few moments where I found myself getting really caught up in the emotions of it, something that doesn't happen often even with shows I lovelovelove. My brother wanted to know what was wrong with me.

A couple of my favourite bits:

The Doctor's goodbye message to Rose as he sent her home in the TARDIS slayed me. Auugh, so gorgeous. "If you want to remember me you can do one thing, that's all, one thing: have a good life. Do that for me, Rose. Have a fantastic life."

Also: "Coward. Any day." Oh, you lie, you brilliant man. :love That moment just summed up the Doctor for me.

Time-hopped Rose was so badass and even though the lines leading up to it made me cringe a bit the fact that they finally KISSED :dance was awesome.

What a great lead-in to the next season! I wasn't sure what to expect in regards to the doctor changing forms but it was really well done and flowed perfectly within the bounds of the scene. Fantastic last-first words!

WHAT'S UP SERIES 2, HERE I COME.

It's so much fun to read your reactions - it's almost like experiencing the show for the first time again! :)

As regards the series 1 finale in particular: I remember seeing Christopher Eccleston morph into the skinny, spazzy David Tennant and thinking, "Who's this goofball?" He didn't have the gravitas Eccleston did, and he came out sounding silly, and I just knew it wouldn't be the same Doctor I was used to.

And I was right. Tennant's Doctor is so different from Eccleston's and yet so, so brilliant. Eccleston has more of a rough edge around him - you can tell he's the product of his horrific experiences in the Time War. Tennant... is just Tennant. He's even more mad, even more fun, and yet is still able to turn on the pathos and be the compassionate Doctor, or turn on the danger and be the Oncoming Storm. I honestly cannot choose a favorite Doctor, but now that Eccleston's laid the groundwork, the stories only get more intense and more breathtaking from here on out. You're in for a great ride. :)

Oh, and I'm not sure how they're laid out in Netflix - does Series 2 include the first Christmas Special?

Chaz de Coventina
Apr 30th, 2011, 11:49:38 PM
Think so! That`s The Christmas Invasion, yes? I`m halway through that but I had to pause because, duh, hockey. :love

I`m still trying to get used to the changes! I was so attached and haven`t had time to adjust yet. Oh, Mr. Eccleston, you were grand. A gentleman and a scholar, bru. *one tear*

Well it sort of sounds right but it's really jilted and there are lots of false starts and bad notes where my fingers didn't land right. They basically spend the whole time freaking out and going, "Whatwhatwhatwhat are you trying to make us do, we don't understaaand!:ohno" Especially coming from a guitar background where the left hand does all the complicated work and the right hand just chills out with a strum pattern that's more or less in time with the fretboard, trying to get both hands to do their own twiddly bits with different tempos is just... augh. Murder, man.

Get cracking on that song, woman! We need a pro's rendition.

Just watched Voyage of the Damned. It was okay I guess.

I don't really rate any of the Christmas specials, except for A Christmas Carol which is wonderful, and what you will begin to notice now is that this is the start of a darker, and somewhat depressing, streak in Ten's adventures. In fact, until the arrival of Eleven, I find Season 4 onwards, the Doctor is too melancholy and has quite a dim outlook on things.

Blink is still one of my favourite episodes. I made it through most of the episode without being too phased by it (I thought it was awesome, not scary), but then they do that bit with the whole "they could be anywhere" montage at the end, and then I had to walk past a bunch of statues the following day... >_<

It's always great when the Doctor meets people in the wrong order too, and I love all the little glimpses of other adventures that we don't get to see that happen in Season 3. Where were they going with that bow and arrow? What did the Doctor do to piss off Liz? All that stuff.

I liked the first half better than the last half! :D The Master was incredible and his scenes with The Doctor are among my favourite of the series. Oh man, the "I forgive you." was wicked.

Props to Martha Jones! While she had a different relationship with The Doctor (I think I really liked the feel of things between he and Rose), I actually like her more as a character than Rose. Or Sarah Jane. ALl of them are lovely but Martha has a special spot in my heart. :)

Aha also, as slightly ridiculous as the episode with Adipose Industries was, I loved it so so much. Caecilius and his family were the subjects of the Latin text books I studied at school. I felt kinda cool knowing that I'd studied the same stuff as some of the writers... until I realised that I'd studied Latin at school, and am thus banned from coolness. >_<

I love how Donna asks questions that no one else would think of. She seems to have a different perspective to the other companions... because she's not as busy fawning over the Doctor, I guess?

Noticed that season 2 was available on demand for free with my V+ box, so I watched The Girl in the Fireplace today. Sophia Myles... *swoon* :love

Also, I love how this line - Would everyone just please calm down! Such a commotion, such distressing noise! Kindly remember that this is Versailles. This is the royal court, and we are French. - is both awesome, and slightly ridiculous given her accent. :lol

Have you seen the show Moonlight? She's the lead in that - it was only one season but I loved it. :love

I watched the first two episodes of Series 3 yesterday as well. Donna was quite... shouty. :lol Not that I blame her! And I enjoyed seeing Martha Jones' first run in with the Doctor. I've actually seen episodes 3 and 4 before, but I'm going to watch them again because its been quite a while - the Shakespeare one and the traffic jam one. I stalled on The Impossible Planet for a while because I'd seen that and The Satan Pit before as well and was having trouble mustering up enthusiasm for watching them again, but I'm glad I just plowed through anyway.

Netflix just added Series... 5? The first one with the new Doctor. Anyway, so I'm hardly making a dent in the pile of episodes to watch. :lol

This series is really teasing me with the Rose moments. Her appearance in the first episode, and last night when the Doctor used his sonic screwdriver to communicate with the Sontarans and the TARDIS, and Rose flashed on the monitor in the TARDIS just for a second.

It's a tie between Angels and Silence for me. I think the former is perhaps scarier... but they managed to tap into some pretty primal, terrifying concepts with both of them. They're both monsters that you constantly have to keep your eyes on. And the Angels especially made walking through statue-heavy parts of Nottingham and London bloody terrifying!

Alright so, in Flesh and Blood when Amy is being left with her eyes closed in the middle of the forest, the Doctor disappears off-screen with River in his usual jaunty manic mood and then almost immediately afterward, we see his arms come back and he holds Amy's hands and is very earnest, very different - and his sleeves are rolled up, whereas seconds before they weren't. Also, he's now wearing black watch instead of the standard gold one.

THIS IS A DIFFERENT DOCTOR.

Which goes back to a line that keeps being repeated (first note I have of it is River in the library episode during the previous series) about 'the Doctor in the TARDIS'; during the first episode of the 5th series he was referred to by Prisoner X like this and then just when the crack appeared in the ship, Angel Bob said, "The Doctor in the TARDIS hasn't noticed", while the Doctor was standing right there. And yes yes technically he's not supposed to muck about with the timeline but this isn't his timeline, it's Amy's, so he can crisscross at will!

Then there's the whole 'time can be rewritten' bit that the Doctor keeps saying and the 11:59/12:00 time that keeps being stressed (Amy's bedroom clock as well as a clock in the TARDIS that keeps popping up in the background!) and his realization at the end of the episode that his 'sorting Amy out' is everything.

Oh god, I need to finish this season, stat. :ohno

Mildly spoilery reaction, nothing beyond what you've already covered: I'm very impressed with how many details you've picked up! I didn't notice those things on my first viewing, but then I wasn't watching with a notebook... Is yours TARDIS blue, by any chance? ;)

Haha no, but it does have a collage of old book covers on it and looks suitably timeworn. ;)

If it weren't for Jace, I might have just written it off as nothing (which it very might well turn out to be!) I was complaining about the fact that halfway through the vampire episode, Amy finally saw fit to change her clothes despite the fact that up until then, no one had blinked at her running about the streets in a miniskirt and he pointed out that I hadn't been bothered by the wardrobe clue that I missed in Flesh and Stone.

So I flipped back and looked under my continuity error page and BAM. And then I rewatched certain parts that had seemed curious at the time. And then I freaked out at Jenny over Skype. :love

So I just jumped to the end of this thread to put in my $0.02.

I watched tons of Doctor Who when I was growing up, thanks to our local PBS station. Tom Baker through Sylvester McCoy. Loved it all.

When the reboot started, I definitely tuned in, but I wasn't turned on by what I saw in the first couple of episodes, so I quit watching. But I know so many people who love the show that I've decided it's time to give it a good, hard second look, especially since I've got Netflix and can watch streaming episodes whenever I want to. Be patient, I just started with S1 E1 today, so it will take time for me to catch up.

Someone told me to hang in there through the Christopher Eccleston season, and that things really take off when David Tennant comes along. :)

Lilaena De'Ville
Apr 18th, 2012, 04:46:35 PM
I love the Eccleston Doctor, but Tennant is reaaaally fantastic.

Just finished S4:E10 SPOILERS - it was awesome. Midnight is next. I'll be wrapping up this season soon. There are two specials/movies after that, correct?

I don't know what order to watch those in.

Droo
Apr 18th, 2012, 05:15:56 PM
From Forest of the Dead (S4 E10):

"When you run with the Doctor, it feels like it'll never end. But however hard you try you can't run forever. Everybody knows that everybody dies and nobody knows it like the Doctor. But I do think that all the skies of all the worlds might just turn dark if he ever for one moment, accepts it.

Everybody knows that everybody dies. But not every day. Not today.

Some days are special. Some days are so, so blessed. Some days, nobody dies at all. Now and then, every once in a very long while, every day in a million days, when the wind stands fair, and the Doctor comes to call... everybody lives."

Coupled with the music, it gets me everytime, and is one of my favourite endings to anything ever.

And Holly, you have four more specials before Series 5, that go in this order:

The Next Doctor
Planet of the Dead
The Waters of Mars
The End of Time (Parts One and Two)

Silence in the Library/Forest of the Dead - :ohno :cry

I've always liked Alex Kingston anyways, so I was very predisposed to like River Song. I've always wished I had Ms. Kingston's hair as well, I'm jealous of her curls.

Midnight - eh, interesting, but not the strongest episode ever.

Turn Left - interesting to see how bleak the world became without the Doctor's intervention. I really, really like Donna, and to see her so sad was a bummer. Then she told the Doctor those two words, those two little words, and it was shriek-worthy.

So over the next couple of days I'll watch The Stolen Earth and Journey's End, then on to the specials. 3 of the 4 specials are on Netflix streaming, but for some reason Planet of the Dead isn't...but that's okay, Netflix shipped me the disc today, so I should get it tomorrow.

So I'm thisclose to saying goodbye to David Tennant. :ohno :ohno :ohno

Please hold my hand and tell me it will be okay. :ohno

RIGHT?! It goes on, an entertaining episode but not necessarily earth-shattering... and then TWO WORDS. Plus All The Strange, Strange Creatures. :love

It will not be okay. It will break your heart and you will be sad and it will feel like a shadow has passed over the sun and the world will never be warm again. :(

But then you will be in a position to meet Eleven. And then all becomes well again... although prepare to have your mind obliterated in staggering ways. :evil

(personally, I found the farewell between Ten and Rose was more of a tearjerker than Tennant's departure, although you ought to have tissues handy for both.)

Then when the Doctor took his slow tour to say goodbye to everyone.... :ohno

Uh oh, that must have been my fault... :o

The last episodes of season 4 are definitely very dark, and the spoiler you saw about Donna is traumatic, BUT once you get through the specials and see The End of Time, you find out things aren't always as they seem. Although seeing The End of Time means experiencing the end of Ten. :(

Two eps into season 6, and holy guacamole, I just love Amy and Rory. :love

The really interesting thing about Matt Smith is he's so young (I looked him up on IMDB and saw that he'll be 30 later this year), but there are times when he looks so old. I don't mean that in a negative way, not at all...I mean that he can believably portray a character over 900 years old who's seen a hell of a lot of trauma in his long life.

Although I know for sure that the fangirls all loved The Lodger. :lol :)

He's so fantastic at this! I think you notice it more because he is so young looking. Similarly, because he's so whimsical most of the time, I feel like when he gets serious or upset it's all the more effective :ohno

Well, I haven't seen the last 2 Christmas specials, but I'll rectify that soon enough.

As for what I'll do next...Doctor Who didn't become popular here in the US until the Tom Baker era. Believe it or not, I've never seen a single Hartnell, Troughton, or Pertwee episode. Netflix still has tons of DW available either by disc or streaming, so I'm going to be watching a lot of the older episodes over the coming weeks and months.

Plus it's time to try out something else that I didn't get hooked into on first broadcast and see if that experiment works out as well as this one did. Buffy the Vampire Slayer seems like a good choice. :)

PS: Matt Smith did NOT burn down Cardiff this morning. Yay! :eee

Glen Fiddich
Aug 23rd, 2012, 01:46:33 AM
I think Netflix lists the specials weirdly - they're in as individual episodes, rather than conveniently being part of a playlist or something. After Journey's End, you want to watch -

"The Next Doctor"
"Planet of the Dead"
"The Waters of Mars"
"The End of Time" (two-parter)

- in that order. Then you'll be good to go onto Matt Smith.

You're also now in a position to watch all of Torchwood, if you haven't already. Torchwood Season 2 finishes just before "The Stolen Earth" / "Journey's End", and everything else happens afterwards.

Planet of the Dead is the one Ten special that for some reason wasn't available for streaming on Netflix, I had to get it on disc. I dunno why, it didn't make sense. Skipping it isn't a big deal, it was a fun episode with some foreshadowing of Ten's upcoming regeneration, but not seeing it doesn't ruin any continuity or anything like that.

BBC America has been running some fun specials the last few Saturdays, tonight they're showing The Destinations of Doctor Who.

And although Ten remains my favorite of the new generation of Doctors, I do have to say...all hail Matt Smith. He's utterly and completely adorkable. :hug

Pierce Tondry
Sep 28th, 2012, 05:52:15 PM
Yes, very much. This is vague enough that I probably don't need to shroud this bit, but...

I mentioned to Jace that her first appearance was very shrill and shouty to me. The way they ran the narrative when she became a companion, however, you could see Donna was always being shut down in her personal life and the bossiness was a coping mechanism. Even though she never quite lost it entirely, as she did things alongside the Doctor her better traits, especially compassion, began to shine through. I was destroyed when they took that away from her - I keep imagining that it's like a genius getting a lobotomy to remove a brain tumor. When it's done, they're alive and that's good, but their IQ is shredded and they can only catch tiny flashes of what and who their best self was. In the end, all you can do is hope the rest of their life is a happy one.

You know, that description makes me feel like Sam may have been a companion.

Anyways, I'm through the Tennant era and up to the Matt Smith era. I definitely enjoyed the ride so far and I'm told it gets better, so we'll see.

Yes. Wheatley Owens.

I've now watched a good portion of the series again. Eccelston is better than I remember, but Tennant takes the cake. The innocent episodes with Rose and 9 or Rose and 10 still delight me. Donna, though. Oh, Donna is a treasure. And you know, I think I like her ending after all. It seems cheap at first glance, giving her a winning lottery ticket. But now that she has money, Donna can finally travel the world, just like she wanted. And maybe she's not as good as when she met the Doctor, but she has a husband who can help her be better. I wouldn't mind seeing her again someday just to see where the future put her, but for now I like the ending in my head better.

At some point, I hope to get my hands on some Series 7 episodes and see where Matt Smith goes next.
