Inspired by the random thought thread. Just either post any news articles, can be local to you, state, national, international, happy, sad, weird, funny, etc etc. And/or discuss/comment on ones previously posted in this thread.

Here's a cute one...this happened on Thursday here in Santa Maria. A reindeer being used by a local Christmas tree farm got loose and ran around neighborhood streets until being lassoed by a cowboy! Good news: the reindeer was exhausted and frightened by unharmed. :)

Dear Mr. Editor,

Educating women is a bad, bad thing.

Yours,

Mhlangatane

These women then prefer that they have only children who they stay with in their workplaces and these children are unlawfully obtained from other women’s husbands and from the disorganised straying males of the world. (http://www.times.co.sz/Letters-to-the-Editor/23983.html)

NASA says it can't afford new rocket, spacecraft

http://news.yahoo.com/s/afp/20110113/sc_afp/usspacecongress_20110113193644

Sometimes I miss Bush... He might have been an indiot but at least he had a vision for NASA. Obama on the other hand does not seem to understand that we need to fly to the moon again because we need a HD moon landing video that is definetly not a fake and we can't let the Russians be the only people with a fully working space program...

"The production of a heavy-lift rocket and capsule is not optional. It's the law,"
I think its a little hilarious that the lawmakers are telling NASA to solve the problem because ITS THE LAW. What are they going to do? Throw NASA in jail?

Not news, persay, but National Geographic's article on the Largest Cave In The World

http://ngm.nationalgeographic.com/2011/01/largest-cave/jenkins-text

Check out the photos, its mind blowing. Also there's a special about it on NatGeo TV, I think its available on demand.

Have-A-Go Granny (http://www.itv.com/news/hero-granny-stops-thief39343/)! What a legend!

There's something so hilarious about the footage, too. The way everyone else was either watching or walking away and, out of the blue, here comes this old pensioner like a superhero, clad in a bright red coat and armed with only her handbag. When I saw this news report on TV I nearly fell out of my seat laughing, especially afterwards when the bike topples, along with its two passengers and, undeterred after the slog, Supergran charges in for the killing blow! :lol

But seriously though, this is why her generation will always be infinately superior to ours unless we pull our fingers out. And on Youtube, it looks like this video's going viral, along with some serious drum n' bass remixes (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6Exnc5sRrEw)!

Not really a news article per se, but...

http://ocm.auburn.edu/news/oaks.html

The Iron Bowl (college football rivalry between my alma mater Alabama, and Auburn) is one of the sport's most intense, hate-filled rivalries. Both teams have had back-to-back national championships in the past two years. Auburn killed a bunch of grass in front of Alabama's president's mansion a while back to spell out their winning iron bowl score from this year.

The response?

Somebody pumps herbicide into famous 130 year old oak trees on Auburn's campus at Toomer's Corner. It's enough herbicide to go over sixty five times the lethal dosage at minimum.

The Iron Bowl has what your rivalry doesn't have apparently. Chemical warfare.

Looks like the guy has been arrested. This idiot actually used his real name when he made the claim of poisoning the trees, which given his level of childish immaturity, is frankly unsurprising.

I'm still in shock that anyone would do this to 130 years old oaks over a school rivalry. It's completely juvenile and unsportsmanlike.

Well, I'm glad he was caught. But anyone idiotic enough to think that was a good idea was of course stupid enough to get caught.

Precedent would suggest he'd be up for about a decade in prison, which sounds rather appropriate.

This is absolutely sickening, and I have no connection to either school. The closest equivalent I can think of would be destroying a gallery full of 130-year-old artwork. And yet the trees have a much more intimate and historical connection to the school, the land, and the people. To say nothing of how long it's going to be before anything else can grow there, or what happens when the herbicides leach out beyond Toomer's Corner...

This goes beyond idiocy and immaturity. It's just a fundamental obliviousness to the earth you're standing on.

I'm mostly mad because it's a really shitty thing to do yeah, but there's also a strange dichotomy where I also see bits of this that are strangely and intensely funny. Somebody made a four and a half minute Toomer's corner montage of Sarah McLaughlin singing weepy lyrics to pictures of sunburnt drunk rednecks throwing toilet paper into a beloved tree.

I get pulled violently between being morose about it and fits of bizarre laughter at the absurdity of it.
