Oliver Queen

Here's a thread for posting character outlines for our DC canon characters.

Update: I've shifted my description elsewhere, so we can use this first post as a quick-reference index for everyone's characters, and a makeshift list of which characters are claimed, who is in what team/group, etc.

New! A full index of all named characters can be found here (http://www.sw-fans.net/forum/showthread.php?p=354944), in Oliver Queen's Guide to Gotham (http://www.sw-fans.net/forum/showthread.php?t=21551). This includes not only those listed below, but also any characters without accounts that have been mentioned, and will play a significant role (eg. Commissioner Gordon, Alfred, etc). If you would like anyone added to the list, please let me know!

Oliver Queen

Oliver Queen

Born to billionaire businessman Robert Queen and his wife Moira, Oliver Queen was orphaned at a young age when his parents were tragically killed on a safari. He was raised by his mother's cousin, William Glenmorgan, who also became the executor of the Queen estate.

Glenmorgan proved to be a poor role model for Oliver. Often found conspiring with fellow billionare orphan Bruce Wayne, the Queen heir developed a reputation as something of a black sheep, spending his trust fund on wild parties and stunts. Decreeing that he was undeserving of his inheritance, Glenmorgan sent Oliver to the military, to learn discipline.

Deployed overseas with the army, Oliver experienced anger and violence on a scale he'd never comprehended before. Seeing the lengths and means that enemy troops would resort to - treating civilian casualties as collateral; simple numbers - shattered much of his optimism and idealism, and left him deeply changed. He found himself feeling that despite his skills, and despite his wealth, there was nothing he could do to make a difference: and while his military service instilled in him a great sense of duty and honour, he began to increasingly feel - like many soldiers - that his hands were being tied by bureaucrats and politicians to prevent him from doing what needed to be done.

In Oliver's absense, Glenmorgan took the opportunity to userp a controlling interest in Queen Industries, and froze much of Oliver's finances. When Oliver returned from the military, he found himself almost completely cut off, and with all of his aspirations to make a difference in the world dashed by a lack of resources. Fortunately, Oliver was able to turn to his childhood friend, Bruce.

Already well aware of the situation, Bruce Wayne offered Oliver a job at Wayne Enterprises, heading up Applied Sciences - not a role that appealed to Oliver initially, but it did provide him with the opportunity to consolodate and reassert himself, and so he graciously accepted. Eventually however, he began begun to realise that many of the abandoned prototypes developed by Applied Sciences have alternative applications, and Oliver has begun to use some of the gadgets and technology developed there to become something of a James Bond style vigilante.

So far, the main focus of Oliver's outside-the-law activities have related to investigating reports of corruption within Gotham's bureaucracy and corporations, and in particular within Queen Industries, in the hopes of liberating his company from Glenmorgan's control, and gaining access to the resources he needs to make a real difference in Gotham. Little does he realise that Bruce Wayne aspires to do exactly the same thing, under the guise of Batman.

William Glenmorgan

William Glenmorgan

Known as "Congo Bill" in his youth, Scottish ex-patriot William Glenmorgan was a big game hunter living in Africa. He is also the cousin of Moira Queen: mother of Oliver Queen. He led the safari expedition on which Oliver's parents were killed; and as the closest surviving relative he was named as Oliver's guardian, as well as the benefactor of the Queen estate.

He used his status to line his own pockets; however, when Oliver came of age he found himself at risk of being exposed. Already a rebellious child, he managed to convince Oliver to spend a few years in military service, and used the time to secure himself a majority share in Queen Industries. Glenmorgan retains that controlling interest in the company, and currently serves as company President.

Carter Hall

Carter Hall

A retired professor of archaeology and Egyptology - in this life, at least - Carter believes himself to be the reincarnation of Prince Khufu, an ancient Egyptian cursed along with his béloved to be endlessly reborn, only to watch the other die. Carter has traced his past lives through various incarnations, ranging from medieval knights in England to gunslingers in the Old West. Whether true or not, Carter was an active vigilante some decades ago, serving as part of a team of costumed superheroes under the alias "Hawkman".

One of his fellow heroes was Dinah Drake; after her death, Carter adopted her daughter and raised her (Dinah Hall) as his own. Living mostly on a steady stream of royalties from his various published works, Carter also inherited Dinah Drake's shop - Sherwood Florists - though he leaves most of the running in the hands of his daughter and hired staff, allowing him to disappear mysteriously on expeditions and adventures with little warning, often for weeks at a time.

Bruce Wayne
Nov 27th, 2010, 07:23:48 PM
Bruce Wayne

Orphaned from an early age, Bruce led a sheltered life until his parents were murdered in front of him by a street thug. After the funeral, he retreated inwards, having little contact with anybody other than the staff at Wayne Manor such as Alfred, as well as his various private tutors. When he reached his mid-teens, he buried himself in study. He'd inherited his fathers inquisitive mind and thirst for knowledge and understanding. Physics, maths, chemistry and later design and engineering. What he was unable to learn from his tutors, he would pursue on his own vocation.

What free time he did allow himself would usually be spent with his second-closest friend - Oliver Queen. But when Ollie joined the military, Bruce decided that it was time for a change of his own. He travelled the world for several years, but not by way of his family's private jet or staying in luxury five-starhotels, but economy flights and hostels, small bed-and-breakfasts and run-down cheap hotels. His parents death had always stuck with him. The world conflicts going on all around him only made him question what went wrong even more. The city his parents had worked so hard to help had bitten the hand that fed it they day they were shot dead. As he travelled, and witnessed the poverty and hardship, the crime and corruption, a resolve slowly grew inside him. A resolve to somehow make his home of Gotham a better place. But it would be some time before he would realise a way to do so.

He lost himself in the harsh, violent, dangerous underbelly of the world, wishing to intimately understand the criminal mind. He emerged a few years later seemingly the same old Bruce on the outside. But that visage hid a wiser, more resourceful, more prepared man beneath his well-kept, boyish good looks. Once he had thought he might fight for Gotham in the light, using law and the judicial system as an lawyer. But childhood nightmares of black winged beasts had implanted a far more effective means of deterrence.

For several years now, Bruce has used the assets of Wayne Enterprises as a means to set himself up as the black-caped vigilante known as Batman. Standing between the good honest people of Gotham and it's crooked dark side of thieves and murderers, Bruce has taken the law into his own hands, having lost most of his faith in official avenues. But there is hope. Bruce is not alone in this goal. There are some in Gothams police force who can be trusted and relied upon to do the right thing in the face of bribes and threats. Along with Jim Gordon and a handful of others like himself, Batman has always and continues to be a symbol of terror to criminals, and one of hope to the common citizen.

Recently, Bruce's friend Oliver Queen has returned to Gotham after his service in the military. Having lost control of his fathers company to his uncle, Bruce has hired Oliver and added him to the staff of Wayne-Tech's Applied Sciences department - where Bruce procures a substantial amount of equipment and supplies for his nocturnal activities. As well as wishing to help his friend financially and also provide a sense of belonging given the situation, Bruce feels that he can bring something to the company and - unbeknownst to Ollie - even further Batmans goals through research and development in his new position at Wayne-Tech

Carrie Kelley
Nov 28th, 2010, 07:27:17 AM
Carrie Kelley

As the daughter of an American escapologist and a Russian gymnast, it was inevitable that Carrie Kelley would have anything but a normal childhood. Carrie would stand on the side-lines of parents stage show, watching as her father performed death-defying escapes and her mother twisted and turned through the air, gracefully soaring between trapeze bars. At the age of 10 she overheard a conversation between her father and two men who were demanding money from the Kelley's, money they had used to establish their show when they had first come to Gotham. Though her father explained that he had paid back the loan three times over, the strangers wouldn't relent. A matter of weeks later, a seemingly chance error on the flying trapeze sent Kelley's wife tumbling to her death.

Carrie watched as her father spiralled into the dark depths of depression. Unable and unwilling to continue the stage show without his wife, Kelley spent his days staring listlessly into the TV screen, with a bottle of booze never far from his hand. After months of eating into what little savings they had – money that was supposed to put little Carrie through school – Kelley gave in and made a phone-call that would somehow change life for the worse. The men who had visited the Kelley's at their stage show were gangsters in the employ of notorious crime-boss Carmine Falcone. The mafia had plenty of use for a man who could pick locks the way Kelley could, though it wasn't long before a job gone wrong put an end to Carrie's father, finishing what had begun on the day when her mother had been murdered.

Furious at Falcone and at her father, the orphaned Carrie had lost all faith in the world. Yet, having inherited her fathers skill with a lock-pick and her mothers physical dexterity, it was not hard to get by in Gotham. Life on the streets of Gotham was hard, but with nothing to lose, Carrie felt no fear breaking into bars, warehouses and even peoples homes to get what she needed – at least, not until the night she tried her most ambitious break-in of all: Wayne Manor.

Roman Sionis
Nov 29th, 2010, 02:41:32 PM
Roman Sionis

Roman Sionis was born to wealthy parents in Gotham about four or five years before the boyish face of Gotham, Bruce Wayne. His father ran the profitable Janus Cosmetics company, and his mother was the stereotypical trophy wife. A serious child, Roman despised his parents' shallowness; they played doting parents to the public and media and ignored him in private, leading their own separate lives. They also befriended the parents of Bruce Wayne to gain business contracts and further their own public image, to the point that they even forced Roman to befriend the young Wayne. His parents' hypocrisy led to an abiding distrust in people and to anti-social behaviour, which would later result in his being sent to a private boarding school as a young teen.

Despite his distrust and dislike of his parents, Roman applied himself to his studies in a vain effort to prove himself worthy of their attention and love. He wrote letters home to no effect, until the daughter of one of his former tutors wrote him on the insistence of her mother, who felt sympathy for the young man. At first he was coldly polite in his responses, but his craving for attention led to a sustained correspondence and later a romance which slowly blossomed upon his leaving school four years later, somewhat based upon his manipulation of the girl's feelings.

Roman proved adept at literature (he published a short book of poetry at 16), languages (he is fluent in five and conversational in four more), chemistry, and biology in his secondary schooling, and in post-secondary, he excelled at business management and psychology in addition to furthering his previous strengths. However, it did not garner him what he wanted from his parents, who continued to ignore him, and when they did not, belittle him in relation to Bruce Wayne and Oliver Queen. The final blow to his desire to please his parents came when he announced that he was marrying the tutor's daughter; his parents vigorously opposed the idea and threatened to cut him off from his inheritance and the company. Not content with merely telling him he could not marry the girl, his parents fabricated an affair on his part, and his fiancée left him, mailing his engagement ring back to him. Devastated and in a murderous temper, Roman left on a world tour of his own, making ties with the Gotham mafia and other gangs, as well as other organized crime rings across the world.

Upon his return, his parents' reputation was in shambles, following a series of 'leaks' about their clandestine activities and a tutor's tell-all book about how they had treated their staff and Roman himself. The pressure did not let up, either. Janus Cosmetics was nearly bought out by a rival company after leaks emerged about testing practices, and Roman engineered an affair between his mother and a rival. Throughout all of this, Roman's own reputation remained unblemished, though he never lied about his antipathy toward his parents. Roman's revenge left his father in prison where he was murdered by a former employee, and led his mother to commit suicide. Last, but not least, Janus Cosmetics was in his hands, as president and CEO of the company.

He devoted his time to restoring its reputation, leading to a number of savvy investments in a start up pharmaceutical company (now known along with the cosmetics company as Janus Enterprises) and a marketing campaign that has made the company an internationally recognised company, with the main slogan, “Put Your Best Face Forward”, a household term in North America. Most recently, he has been contacted by William Glenmorgan of Queen Industries, having been offered the position of CEO of the larger company; an offer Roman accepted. There is rampant speculation as to who will take the helm of Janus Enterprises in his absence.

Arthur King

Arthur King

The sort of man who does his job and keeps to himself, Arthur King is a former military officer who is currently on the payroll of Queen Industries as a Security Consultant. He was recently appointed to shore up security in the company's research & development department, in order make Queen Industries a more attractive contender for military research contracts.

Quiet and unassuming, King has a knack for blending into the background and remaining unnoticed, and puts this particular talent to great use in covertly observing the goings on in the Queen Industries building.

Rick Grayson

Rick Grayson

Richard spent his childhood in a traveling circus, the youngest member of the world famous Flying Graysons. When he was ten years old, during an extended performance in the city of Bludhaven, he witnessed an attempted shakedown on the circus owner. That night he watched helplessly as his parents fell to their deaths when their trapeze bar snapped. The tragedy led to the boy becoming a key witness in a federal RICO case against mob boss, Tony Zucco, and set young Richard on a path that ultimately led him to become an officer in the Bludhaven police department.

What he did not know, though, was the FBI file opened by the event put him on a special candidate list for several government agencies. As Rick grew up, he fit more and more of the profile; orphaned, athletically gifted, exceptionally driven, highly intelligent. Despite bouncing around the Bludhaven foster care system, he resisted the ever present pull toward crime. In fact, the only trouble he got into as a kid was generally the byproduct of being overzealous in standing up to bullies and criminals. He nearly failed out of high school due to boredom, but excelled in college and scored 100% on the police entrance exam and then the detective's exam.

Early in his career, he was transferred to the Gotham PD, where he became obsessed with The Batman. Rick studied any case even tangentially related with the urban legend; whether he was known to be involved, only sighted, or not. It was while working on a case that unwittingly led to the involvement of the Joker that he finally saw the vigilante in action. The experience significantly impacted his outlook and his own fighting style. It also got him transferred back to Bludhaven with a reprimand on his record from his Lieutenant, Jim Gordon, for breaking regulations in the pursuit of the suspect.

It was when he ran up against the crime lord Roland Desmond -- not metaphorically, but literally confronted the metahuman in close quarters combat and survived -- that he became an official recruit of the organization Checkmate. His penchant for the use of thrown weapons, stealth oriented combat techniques, and referring to Batman's methods earned him the callsign Nightwing, and made him the lead investigator in any Gotham related cases.

Jason Todd
Nov 29th, 2010, 10:21:48 PM
Jason Todd

Jason became an orphan when he was twelve years old, with no family to take him in, though he was already well adapted to survive on the streets thanks to the inspirational guidance of his junkie mother (overdosed) and thug-for-hire father ("disappeared"). He was an angry child, to say the least, with a daredevil streak that never allowed him to settle on mere survival. When a normal person finds the legendary Batmobile parked in an alley, seemingly abandoned, they either hurry away while looking nervously at the shadows, or maybe the bolder ones snap a video to post on YouTube with their phone first, then hurry away while looking nervously at the shadows.

Jason tried to boost the hubcaps.

Batman took him to a home for troubled kids rather than to juvenile hall. That unexpected act of kindness made a strong impact on Jason, though not in the way Batman likely intended. For weeks, Jason would consistently turn up at crime scenes, and more than once managed to track down the elusive vigilante. The night when he showed up and actually helped Batman take down a gang of thieves, it became clear that Jason possessed potential far beyond the stunted expectations that life had dropped on him.

Hoping to rehabilitate the boy by helping him channel his rage into something more constructive, Batman offered to train him. Jason became the ward of Bruce Wayne, and the student of Batman. After months of intensive training, further sharpening his resourcefulness and athletic prowess, Jason adopted the code name Robin, inspired by his favorite stories from Wayne's vast library, with a costume design inspired by the memory of the circus that stuck with him from an early age.

Jason's tenure as The Boy Wonder would ultimately prove to be as short lived as it was tragic. The more cases they worked, the more unpredictable the younger half of the dynamic duo became. At first, Robin became prone to excessive force and defying orders with mixed results. Eventually, his risks became increasingly dangerous, bordering on suicidal.

Batman was forced to retire Robin from the field, a decision met with more than a little resentment. The teenager ran away from Wayne Manor, never to return. Bruce's search for his missing foster son led him to the burnt out remains of an abandoned warehouse in east Africa. Although no body was found, DNA evidence recovered strongly suggested that Jason died in the blast.

In addition to working at Gotham University, Crane has become a psychiatrist in residence at Arkham Asylum. Crane's studies at the asylum primarily focus on those in-mates who have been deemed criminally insane, trying to understand the factors which have driven them to a life of crime.

Barbara Nolan
Nov 30th, 2010, 04:35:18 AM
Barbara Gordon

Daughter of Commissioner James Gordon, Barbara is 21 and was enrolled at Metropolis University studying computer science. After two years away she returned, deciding to take a year off from school. She works at the Gotham Public Library, and has an investigative blog that she's just starting to get off the ground, titled "Gotham's Dark Corners."

Adopted by the Gordons at the age of 12 when her parents (the elder Barbara Gordon's sister and brother-in-law) were deemed unfit by the courts, Barbara had been in foster care for a few years before being taken in by Jim Gordon. Before she left for college she knew Rick Grayson, a colleague of her adopted father's on whom she had a teenage crush.

She has taken martial arts for years, and is a talented acrobat as well.

Harleen Quinzel

Three years ago Harleen Quinzel was a promising grad student of Psychiatry at Gotham University who had earned the one single thing she wanted more than anything else: An internship at Arkham. A fairly quiet girl, only her academics made her stand out from the crowd and with continued signs of excelling, and several pleads to Professor Crane, she even managed to gain the ability to speak with and analyze the individual focused on in her dissertation.

No one is entirely certain how it was that the Joker played a part in transforming the shy Quinzel into the eccentric Harley Quinn or how it was exactly that she managed to break him out of Arkham and gained a place seemingly at his right hand for the next few years. Even those who worked for the Joker and were later questioned by authorities could only begin to speculate what significance, if any, the woman had. Most would state that she simply was a glorified, obsessive henchman who was convinced that she was in a romantic relationship with the criminal. Others wondered if there was more to it.

With the Joker's death, Quinzel has vanished into the Gotham underworld. Some even believe her to have been killed herself without the apparent "protection" that the Joker offered her. Rumors however, state that she is living with fellow criminal and friend Pamela Isley and has gained a new subject of obsession: the death of Batman.
