Ok so later this evening I will be purchasing the game and the first expansion. I know where Fewdy plays... anyone else have good servers to mention? I could also use some advice on what to play as a newbie.

Here's a comprehensive guide to choosing your class as a rookie:

Hunter, rogue or shaman is probably a safe bet for getting to know the game, especially if you are going to be soloing.

The classes have changed a lot since that article, especially with 4.0 (the Cataclysm patch).

IMO hunter, paladin or druid. Although rogues now have recuperate, Druids or Paladins are the most flexible classes in the game and after mostly leveling 2 rogues (1 to 80, my main) I can safely say this is way easier. They can self heal and bears are mostly immune to damage.

Hunters let their pet tank, but it's another layer of management. Hunters are awesome. It seldom hurts to have another. Either way, if it's not 8pm-12am on Monday or Thursday, I'll happily help you out.

Interesting that a thread like this should pop up as I have been considering whether or not to renew my subscription for Cataclysm. No more hardcore raiding for me, but just to play casually and see the new content. Might be fun to play with some of the people here, as I was so involved in my guild previously that I had no time to do so in the past.

Yeah I just want to do some casual gaming to be honest. I did harcore raids in CoH and DAoC, plus pvp stuff. I rather just enjoy content and the like and perhaps raid in a blue moon. :)

The disc are loading!!!

I'm with Fig - in that I am curious about Cataclysm, enough to probably buy a couple of months subscription. But sadly, being an EU player, I will never be able to play with you guys.

(Nevermind the fact that TIMEZONES :shakefist would make it tricky anyway)

I was thinking of renewing my account as well, but it's been hacked to all heck and back since it went inactive, is currently locked down by Blizzard, and I recieve about an average of three e-mails a day, all obviously fake, saying I have to go to yadda yadda site to restore access to my account.

When I get the free time, I'm going to try and call Blizzard Support Hotline and see if I can get my account back.

But hey, if my characters have been deleted for more than three months, we could level up characters together Miranda!

Like some others here, I'm presently on leave from WoW but am planning to pick it up again once Cataclysm hits and level up a new character (Goblin mage, probably also a Worgen on the alliance side too) for a couple of months just to see the new content. Beyond that though, no idea if I'll stick with it in the long term - my best mate who got me into the game way back in 2007 and whom I regularly played with is moving away and has informed me he's not going to continue playing. :(

I could also use some advice on what to play as a newbie. I've been unsubscribed for a couple of months now so haven't had a chance to look at all the new fancy changes that have been coming through. Still though, I know hunter was a great starting class since it's so easy to solo content (send pet in to tank, shoot from distance, repeat). Paladin wasn't bad either.

Another factor to also consider is if you intend to try and play end-game content and what role you'd like to play. Don't do what I did where I levelled up a warrior all the way to 80 before realising I didn't like tanking, or like my aforementioned mate who levelled up his priest only to discover he didn't like healing either |I (both can happily DPS but expect to get pestered endlessly by other players as to why you're not playing the class in it's 'primary' role).

I play(ed) on Gorgonnash (Horde) and Icecrown (Alliance) - the latter is where the Warcraft Hunters Union (http://www.warcrafthuntersunion.com/) (whom I've plugged before) has it's baby hunter guild of 600+ dwarven hunters and we've got a couple of off-shoot guilds to level up other ally characters. :)

Dani rolled a Paladin, which means she can do any role except ranged damage.

At least she can faction change at some point if desired.

Won't you be able to roll a Cow paladin on the Horde after Cata comes out?

I renewed my subscription. Not likely going to level a new toon until the expansion, and only after I level and play my druid.

Took me the better part of 3 hours to rebuild my UI though.

What's your impression of the game so far, as a new player?
