I know it's early, but what the heck - I'm already here. The first round of byes is this week, so only fourteen games in this round.

Byes: Cowboys, Chiefs, Vikings, Buccaneers

Aside: Hey, any interest in also doing survival picks? Basically, each week, you pick one team to win - if they win, you move on to the next round, and if they lose, you're out (of the survival contest, not the whole pick 'em). However, you can't pick the same team more than once - each week you have to choose a different winner.

All you'd have to do is post your picks as normal, then identify your survival pick for the week. I'll keep track of who's picked which teams so there aren't any repeats. I think it could be a fun little addition and an extra opportunity for bragging rights. And if you fail, you can just start over. Person with the longest streak wins. :)

Byes: Cowboys, Chiefs, Vikings, Buccaneers

Survivor Pick: Houston.

Liam was adamant about me picking the Cowboys. Really, that was all he kept saying. But seeing as how they have a bye, I'll pick the Jet's for him.

Some surprising games today. I am shocked the Lions are in their game. The Niners are giving the Falcons a tough game and how are the crappy panthers hanging around with the Saints? I guess the Seahawks are going to suck on the road.

Just looked at my list while comparing it to the current scores. Apparently I was subconsciously playing the tie between DEN and TEN.

Would have picked TEN if I had been paying attention, but ah well.

Edit: and it matters not as Denver won anyway...

What a shame that the Niners played so much better today and still lost it in the final seconds. :(

I hate the Seahawks anyways, but I really hate them now, I couldn't pick them right to save my life. :shakefist

They are going to be a tough team to pick this year. Cleveland finally won a game. They had been in every game this season but have struggled in winning games.

Edit
With the Steelers loss who would have thought the Chiefs would be the only unbeaten AFC team?

Figrin D'an
Oct 3rd, 2010, 02:47:24 PM
I realize that Detroit is improving and clearly has some talent, but there is no way that game should have come down to the last few minutes in the 4th quarter. A win is a win, but the Packers offense was anemic the entire 2nd half and the defense got shredded by a very average passing attack.

My only solace is that basically every other "good" team in the NFC is struggling just as much, if not more so, than Green Bay. I can't believe how pedestrian the Saints has been, but they're still 3-1, so the storyline for a lot of teams this year might be just to survive early until things start clicking.

Jedi Master Carr
Oct 3rd, 2010, 02:50:26 PM
A lot of teams don't look that great right now. I think the fact we only have 2 unbeatens left shows how much parity there is in the NFL.

The Seahawks draw a lot of energy from the home crowd, and they're a different team when they play outside Seattle. That's not to say they're a good team at home - they still needed huge help from special teams and inconsistent play from Rivers to beat the Chargers - but when they're away, they're among the worst in the league. I wouldn't take them to beat anybody on the road right now.

Duly noted, that's for sure. :)

So now here I am, facing a 4th straight weekend where I'm going to be lucky to break even. Ugh. It's almost hard to believe at this point that I actually won the pick-em contest the first season I played! O_o

Jedi Master Carr

Well I think everybody picked the Colts and they really disappointed us all today. I have to say I was tempted to pick the Redskins as I was unhappy how they treated McNabb. I am glad he won in Philly. It has been a strange season I would have to say.

I'm just glad that the Chargers had a completely kick-ass day.

Things probably would have been much different in Philly if Michael Vick hadn't gotten hurt.

Not that I would be rooting for Michael Vick. I know he's paid his debt to society, but as an animal lover, I will never be able to forgive him for what he did. :grumble

7-6 this weekend, probably7-7 tomorrow. Oh well.
I don't especially feel bad about being wrong on SEA @ STL, WAS @ PHI or BAL @ PIT. Seattle is inconsistent and I gave Pittsburgh a slight edge for playing at home. I didn't foresee Vick getting injured, either, so welp on that game.

But WTF Indy? Jacksonville beats you!? And the Bungles must be back cause the Browns are supposed to be bad. Cripes Chicago, 9 sacks on Cutler? Are you trying to get the guy killed?

8-5 so far this week, with one to go. Missed all of yesterday's games, so when I got home this morning and looked at the newspaper, I was thinking 'Wow wow wow' at all of the close scores, with one 'What the hell Seattle?' thrown in there.

Rutabaga

I think I'm 6-7 for the weekend, I lost count :cry

I'm going to give it a couple more weeks, and if I continue to suck this badly, I may bow out for this season.

Figrin D'an
Oct 4th, 2010, 11:31:23 AM
To quote a moderately well-known former coach:

"The Bears are who we thought they were."

Chicago's offensive line is terrible, and Jay Cutler will still melt down if you get any type of early, consistent pressure on him. The Bears should be 1-3 right now, as Detroit did (should have) beaten them, and Green Bay beat themselves last week.

As for everyone lamenting their weekly records... seriously, don't get discouraged. Tony Dungy made a very fair point after last night's game that this season is simply shaping up to be a one of those parity-laden type of years for the NFL. There is no dominant team(s), just a lot of good teams that each have their own flaws. I stand by my statement that this season will be about which teams can survive and find ways to squeak out wins until they get hot.

About the Colts, I think Indy is showing some major flaws. Their defense is horrible, anybody can run 150-200 yards on them. The Broncos could have beat them two weeks ago if they hadn't made so many bonehead mistakes near the goal line. They also can't run the ball, so that leaves you with Manning having to throw 400 yards and 5 TDs to win games. The Colts are just not the same teams as in the past. I think the Chiefs could beat them especially if they run the ball 30 times and not turn the ball over.

Dragon
Oct 4th, 2010, 05:44:03 PM
You also have to understand that division. Indy's been king for most of its existence and has unquestionably been more successful against non-divisional opponents. The Titans, Jaguars, and Texans know that, and often, in an otherwise disappointing season, the only bright spot for the runner-up is the possibility of beating the Colts. Because of that, each of those teams plays the Colts tough in at least one of their games every year. Those AFC South upsets really aren't that uncommon.

Same sort of thing with the Browns, actually. They scared Baltimore last week, they overpowered the Bengals (who have looked shaky from week one) yesterday. Both those teams have more talent from top to bottom than the Browns, but the combination of familiarity and contempt makes the Browns a legitimate threat. I expect the Browns to give the Steelers trouble in one of their match-ups, too. That's also why I picked the Dolphins to beat the Patriots tonight, and the Dolphins are certainly more stacked with talent than either the Browns or the Jaguars.

The Chiefs have certainly impressed, but they still have the meat of their schedule ahead of them. I'm waiting to see how they handle a good team on the road.

Jedi Master Carr
Oct 4th, 2010, 07:33:16 PM
It isn't just one game though as the Colts defense looked awful in every game but one to the incompetent Giants' Offense. Their defense is dead last against the run and that is the Chiefs strength. The colts aren't the same team as they were the last few years. I am not saying the Chiefs will win, but they can.

Eew, finishing out the week 8-6. Oh well, better luck next week. :\

In lieu of the Bucs, according to Mapquest, JAX is closer to me than MIA by about 32 miles worth of driving distance, so at least my home away from home team won this week.

Oh yeah, I'm also 1-0 for Survivor.
