Zombies hold a very particular acclaim when it comes to monsters and creepy entities. You think of vampires, werewolves, goblins, demons, ghosts etc. They all have their unique features and chilling aspects to them. But zombies are - for me - the most terrifying.

The fact that they're slow in itself is scary. They're not fast, they're not loud, they don't come bounding round corners and home in on you. They're just inevitable. It may take them a while, but they're inevitable.

One of the most terrible, and sad, things about zombies is that they are us. Like Barbara says in Night of the Living Dead. They're us. Or at least they were. Now they're dead and they want to eat us. Every single one of them used to ride the bus with us, play football with us, serve us coffee, make fun of us, laugh with us, cry with us, promote us, fire us, save our lives, and perhaps one (or more) made love to us. Maybe the one we just shot used to be a writer. Perhaps we'll find one of their books one day and read it. Maybe they did a song we've heard somewhere. Maybe we used one of their recipes from that cooking website. But whatever they used to be has gone now. We can't do any of those things with them again. Unless we were a really sick fuck! Now all we can do is watch them shamble about looking the way they did when we shared all those things with them. The fact that they look the same is nothing but a hopeless torment, a cold reminder that all that stuff is now lost.

The idea of becoming one is horrific. The idea that if you mess up, your future might very well be to wander around until your muscles have atrophied to the point where you can't lift your own weight, your tendons have rotted to the point if ripping and you can no longer move. All you can do is lie there. Perhaps face down in the dirt. Perhaps looking up at the sky - the occasional involuntary blink (if zombies do in fact blink). You'll see things pass by - close, around you, or above in the sky - perhaps a plane far up amongst those clouds. You can just barely see it, carrying what could possibly be the last human survivors on the planet. Will they make it? The thought probably won't enter your head. You'll just watch. Until your eyes decay. Then maybe you'll still hear - if you still can. But eventually that will go and all that will be left is...nothing really. Just a motionless corpse that still has some brain activity. And that will also be lost to time.

That's why I think these kind of stories are important. That's why I invest so much in characters who are trying to survive this zombie apocalyptic nightmare. I hope to God they'll make it, start a new...start. Somewhere. Rebuild perhaps. Who knows!? I just want them to make it! The idea of a rock orbiting the sun with 6 billion corpses on the surface is scarier than the thought of no Earth at all. Especially if some of those corpses are walking around waiting to feast on some extra-terrestrial brains.

Zombie fiction and zombie games are probably my favourite after traditional science fiction about space and future technology. I'm looking forward to seeing this, as well as the eventual World War Z film. I'd love a zombie apocalyptic MMO. Zombies rule! I just don't want to be one!

The second episode was great...the sight of the characters smearing zombie guts all over themselves was priceless.

Ratings have been through the roof for a show like this on an off-network channel. So it's no surprise that it's already been picked up for a second season. :eee

Agreed...the line about him being alive because he ran away as the walkers were eating his family was chilling.

I also loved the upending of stereotypes, with the apparently generic Mexican gang turning out to be something much, much different.

I love this show. I'm just completely bummed that season 1 is only 6 episodes long, so we're almost done. Season 2 will be 13 episodes long but probably won't return until next October. :grumble

I gave it a try, I honestly did. All it's done is reinforce my belief zombie media is seriously overplayed and the last decent zombie media was 28 Days - which was at the least somewhat original and genuinely disturbing / scary. Shaun of the Dead and Zombieland mocked this genre highly effectively and frankly it needs more mocking.

I do give what I read on this forum a chance as I discovered BSG an a few other things thru it but ehhhhh..... not this one. It's just boring and formula driven, without the hint of a original worthwhile idea. BSG wasnt highly original but at least it has 33 to get you hook, line and sinker. There was literally nothing that got me in the slightest interested in any of the characters and in the end I just turned off and went to sleep.

It's not bad, just boring and no where near original

Am I alone with my opinion or did somebody else consider the season final pretty weak. I do not mean that the episode was bad...it just did not end with a cliffhanger that would had made me think "OMG and now I have to wait for half a year or more so that this shows continues?"

Barbara Nolan

Well you can spend the next ten months wondering what did that doctor whisper to Rick?!?!?

I didn't think it was weak. I'm glad it wasn't ended on a cliffhanger, to be honest.

I agree, it isn't always mandatory to end EVERYTHING with a cliffhanger. I liked the episode a lot, I thought it was really effective and intense.

And what the CDC guy whispered to Rick could NOT have been good, since the look on Rick's face was basically, oh shit, really? Overall, there were a lot of threads left dangling that I look forward to seeing addressed next season.

I was thinking about perhaps getting the comics, but with moving into a new house with my fiance in March, it's just something that would take up space and I decided against it. I haven't actually read them, but considering what's already happened, I have a pretty good idea.

It was indeed. :cry

After we'd seen that Hershel and company would rescue walkers and put them in the barn, I started to wonder if perhaps Sophia might be in the barn. Enough time had gone by that it might have strained believability if Sophia had survived. So when that one growl came out of the barn after the rest had been mowed down...*sigh*. It was poetic justice, in a way, that Rick was the one who ended up shooting her. He was already dealing with guilt about her going missing, I can only imagine that it will be worse after what happened in this episode. And poor Carl, he liked Sophia a lot and seeing his father have to shoot her in the head...that's going to hurt like hell too.

I like the show so much that I bought 7 hardcover volumes that hold all the graphic novels. They were released in conjunction with the premiere of the second season. Hopefully I'll have them done by the time the show returns in February.

I was ready to shoot Shane myself last night. His whole "Rick should die because he's never saved your life and I have" conversation with Lori was just outrageous. He's a proverbial ticking time bomb who's going to take a lot of people along with him when he goes off.

Walking Dead's been back for 2 episodes in the US, 1 in the UK. Anyone still watching?

If so, can I just say what the heck was with Rick shooting those two guys? They didn't come across as shady to me, and it makes sense that if you find other survivors, you're gonna ask if you can team up. What harm would it have done? Rick just seemed to randomly take against them when the big one had a piss on the floor... but honestly, it's not worth risking finding a zombie hiding in a bathroom stall, just to take a piss.

I don't know, the whole thing just seemed really out of left field for me.

Crusader
Feb 21st, 2012, 08:27:07 AM
Rick did not shoot them for pissing on the floor but for insisting on seeing the farm and for their agressive body language. Keep in mind that he is still a cop that knows how to read people. If one guy is walking behind a shelf for concealing his hands and another one is positioning himself way too obvious behind you. You know that they will try to draw on you.
Sidenote: Actually positioning yourself in that kind of formation is an often made rookie mistake since in many cases you end up having friendly fire due to bullets flying straight through the guy in the middle plus you interrupt the visual contact between your partner making it even harder to draw on your foe simultaniously. A L-Flank is always more effective in such situations.
End of sidenote (yes, sometimes I love to brag with my military draft)

Lilaena De'Ville
Feb 21st, 2012, 12:19:49 PM
^^ What he said, plus the fat one said basically "let's just kill them" and then the guy behind the bar (Rene from True Blood, and Britt from Terriers :3 ) went for his gun. Rick then drew his weapon and shot them both.

They were being very cagey, and trying to engage Glen with questions once they realized he was the weakest link. Rick did all the talking and redirected the conversation to go through him. Of Glen, Hershel and himself, he has the training to deal with tense situations and so he took care of the problem and tried to diffuse it before it got out of hand.

Of course, pissing on the wall is just bad manners. So is implying you will rape all the pussy you might find at the farm!

That last ten minutes was probably the best part of the series so far.

Next episode spoilers Lori is a dumbhead (what else is new), but trying to manipulate Rick against Shane was a good move. Except she should have led with "he tried to rape me at the CDC." Also what was up with night suddenly falling (when Rick shot the two Philly guys it was daylight outside, then this episode starts, he's standing over their bodies holding the smoking gun and it's dark out!)... and then it takes Glen, Hershel and Rick all night to drive home? They don't get back until morning!

The leg thing with the fence was so cringe inducing. UGH!

Though there are problems with the show, I still enjoy it immensely!

Rutabaga
Feb 22nd, 2012, 10:38:39 AM
I described that scene with Rick as "Rick finally finding some gonads." I agree that it was a subtle reminder of Rick's life as a cop, that he knew how to read people, and they were most definitely a threat. They talked a good game, but it was becoming obvious that they weren't really planning on being all lovey-dovey and singing Kumbaya with the group at the farm. They were going to take it over.

Plus Rick also had his family to consider...not only was he being a cop, he was also being a father and feeling he had to protect Lori, Carl, and his unborn child.

And I also agree that Lori is a complete dumbhead. I still can't for the life of me understand why she felt she just HAD to go out on her own to find Rick. But the final scene of the most recent episode, where she was very skillfully manipulating Rick against Shane, was awesome, especially with the final look on Rick's face. But again, why did she not say that Shane had tried to rape her? They all saw the scratches on his neck, so it would all fit in. Maybe she's saving that for a final bombshell, I dunno.

And please, for heaven's sake, Carol and Daryl just HAVE to have mad, passionate, redneck sex. PLEASE.

These last 2 episodes have been so intense and have ended with such horrific and sad moments...holy crap, what an awesome show. :clap

I'm also glad that Shane was killed. I think it was inevitable, because he really was skating on the edge of sanity. I'd really liked the scene early in the episode when Lori apologized to him, but in retrospect that seemed to be the thing that ultimately pushed him over the edge. That final confrontation between him and Rick was SO well done...I actually felt a little bad for Shane because he had become so unhinged, and of course I felt terrible for Rick.

Does anybody else watch Talking Dead after the show? It's a lot of fun and does add some insight to the show. I always enjoy the "In Memoriam" segment in each episode, and last night's was on the money, when they referred to Shane as "you were a loose cannon, but you were OUR loose cannon."

I have the 7 volumes of the graphic novel, but I haven't read them all. I'm on volume 2, where they're in the prison. It was interesting to see that Shane's final fate did dovetail with what happened in the graphic novel, although the details were different. And now that we know the virus is airborne and everyone is infected, everyone is doomed to become a walker at death if their brain is intact...well, that definitely throws a monkey wrench into things! :eek

Oh, and although Carl did the right thing at the end of the episode, he's still bugging the hell out of me. He still did an awful lot of wandering around on his own. He's very stealthy. O_o

The final did not do much for me. Only people I did not give a damn about died. The whole shoot out at the end was nothing special and made me roll my eyes more than once.

Hershel's shotgun never runs out of ammo it seems.

People use handguns from a car to give headshots. Even in Hollywood realism this skill is normally given to only one character or if a single character goes into blood rage.

Hershel's boy using the RV to save Rick and Carl was like running around in the Z-apocalypse with a T-shirt on that says "Bite me!"

Lilaena De'Ville
Mar 21st, 2012, 08:50:33 AM
I didn't mind that redshirts died - they did kill off two regulars in the previous two episodes after all.

The other things ... I noticed the ammo and head shots. You can argue that the show wouldn't bother showing misses and reloads unless they were story relevant in favor of cramming as much action as they could into their hour. Regardless, it didn't bother me so much as to ruin my enjoyment. :)

You don't know that Carol's dead. She could just be trapped somewhere or lost in the jail.

Devastating episode. I got really misty eyed. :(

That being said, I know people who are outraged at the differences between the show and the graphic novels/comic to the point of saying the show has no balls and they're not going to watch it any more. Which is their opinion and choice, but really - they went ahead and killed off Lori in childbirth and made Carl have to headshot her afterward. That's plenty ballsy and brutal!

I think that Carol~~~~ is fine. Or perhaps kidnapped.

Things should be going down in Woodbury next week, from the looks of the preview. I got chills in a bad way when the Governor said (from this episode but implications are a comic spoiler) "It's just me...and my daughter."

I have been loving this season so far. Last night, the show left me a complete blubbering mess. :cry

I have never liked Lori, not in the graphic novels and not in the series. Although I haven't reached her death in the graphic novels yet, I was already aware that she died at some point. I was one of those people who wanted her to die because she annoyed the hell out of me.

But...oh...not that way...what a sad way to die....

Lori redeemed herself at the end, sacrificing herself in order to save her unborn child. Her farewell to Carl was so sad, so loving, just so heartbreaking! I'd wanted her to die, and here i was getting all weepy over her death.

And having Carl be the one to deliver to headshot to keep her from turning....holy shit. What a change we've seen in Carl from season 2 to season 3. Last year I wanted to kick his sorry little ass. Now all I want to do is give him a hug.

The pinnacle of the episode, though, was without a doubt when Rick saw Maggie with the baby and Carl outside the prison and the realization of what had happened dawned on him. Especially how he looked at Carl, and that weird, strained "no" came out of him, and you know he'd just figured out that Carl had been the one to put Lori down. OMG. When Rick collapsed, that was when I really started bawling. Andrew Lincoln has done some phenomenal work on the series this year. I hope his performance isn't overlooked at Emmy time next year.

I was sad about T-Dog, but at least he died a hero. And I hope Carol is alive. I'm one of those weirdos who totally ships her with Daryl. And I also hope we don't spend a bunch of episodes wondering where the hell she is.

And as I've seen other people point out, realize that this was just the 4th episode of the season. Imagine what the mid-season and season finales will be like. I think I'll need to stock up on kleenex and ice cream for those. :cry
