You see, this sounds like something that we'd do, and you'd make fun of us for doing it, not the other way around.

What I mean to say is: Germany, you're doing it wrong!

EDIT: Okay my curioity needs to be sated: What kind of beer is it mixed into? A generic lager or a pilsner or something with a little more heft on it?

Basicly it is a pils with cola in a nearly 50:50 ratio. It still has got a tasty foam (that is very important in Germany!!!) but a very nasty color since it is a pretty dirty black that looks like gasoline that is why it is called a Diesel in some places.

Mixing beer has got a huge tradition in Germany. Mixing a beer with lemonade is called a Radler ("Biker" or "bycicle rider").

Since we don't have open container laws in Germany you are allowed to drink and drive to a certain degree so drinking a Diesel or a Radler is a much better choice if you want to refresh yourself with a beer without risking to lose your driving license.

This is infact one of those national differences that I always notice Germans in general do not consume alcohol to get drunk you just drink it because beer or other stuff like Glühwein (hot spiced wine) is tasty.

American college boys or US soldiers abroad always seem to be rushing into those things forgetting that the point is not getting drunk but enjoying yourself while having a good time.

This does not mean that we never try to get drunk or pass out but we normally don't use beer but harder stuff for that anyway.

OH and btw beer bongs are considered a waste of this sacred fluid :)

A 50:50 mix is always a good point to start. Then you can decide if you want to have more beer or more coke. But plz keep in mind this is all about the taste and not getting actually drunk. This is just the perfect drink for BBQs or after workouts or if you don't want to wake up next to the wrong girl after a party.
