A few interesting storylines this week. Dennis Dixon will have his third career start for the Steelers at Tennessee... Philly and Detroit are both missing their starting quarterbacks, so we'll see Michael Vick and Drew Stanton in relief... Peyton and Eli Manning meet for the second round of their pro sibling rivalry on Sunday Night... and St. Louis and Oakland meet in what promises to be a showdown of utter futility.

Get your picks in! (I'm looking at you, Yog. :mneh)

Who in the league head office thought that StL vs Oak was a good match-up? Yes I know it's done on a rotation of divisions, but surely they could have just skipped that one.

Personally, I love that the current rotation guarantees all possible match-ups on either a three- or four-year cycle. Besides, how else are we going to figure out who wins the number one draft pick?

I don't even think that's the worst match-up this week, actually... Who wants to see Tampa Bay and Carolina? |I

Oh I have no problems with the rotation. I would laugh my ass off if that game ended as a tie though and they had to go to a coin flip to determine the number 1 pick after StL and Oak go 0-15-1.

Holy craaaaaap I can't believe the Steelers are up by 10! Rashard Mendenhall and Dennis Dixon scrambling were the only offense we had, and then Dennis Dixon got knocked out with an unspecified knee injury... we're down to Charlie Batch, who's playing like the frail fifty-year-old he is, unless he gets knocked out, too, and then we'll have to put in Antoine Randle El. But the defense is playing lights-out and has forced three turnovers, and they've got Vince Young looking like he's a freshman at UT again.

How huge is that opening kickoff return by Antonio Brown! Last year, the Steelers were the ones getting burned on special teams. If we pull this out, this will have been an epic effort by the Steelers defense and special teams!

Several surprises by week 2 Dallas and Minnesota are 0-2. I would have never predicted that to happen. Chiefs, Dolphins, Bears, and Bucs are 2-0, all those teams were below .500 last year. I think 2 of those teams will make the playoffs.

Oh man, I think my picks for this week are going to end up even worse than last week. What's really frustrating is that (as usual) the games I really spent some time thinking over before picking almost all went the other way. :grumble

For me, one big surprise is Minnesota being 0-2. But an even bigger surprise is Dallas being 0-2. I can't stand the Cowpies, but holy crap, being 0-2 is a HUGE shocker.

So Seattle and Arizona get blown out by teams that lost last week, and St. Louis loses a yawner to the Raiders. I'm beginning to wonder if the NFC East will ever get a win against a non-division opponent this season.

At this point, until Roethlisberger's suspension is up, I'm willing to accept any offensive performance from the Steelers that does not actively lose the game. The defense was spectacular, torturing the Titans for seven (!) turnovers, and the offense still managed to out-possess the Titans.

Anne Phoenix, congratulations on a solid win by the Buccaneers! ;)

You'll find me cheering on a couch somewhere if that happens. I'm so surprise that the Jets pulled on out. They looked horrible last week.

This season is starting out on a very strange note, beside the fact that I still think the Browns need to be kicked out the league. Bad experiment.

Dai, since you missed last week and are already playing from behind, I'm willing to give you the four early games you picked right, but the usual policy is you only get credit for your picks if you post them before kickoff.

And oh, the Browns. Is there a pro franchise in American sports with a more tragic history? No, there is not. Cubs fans, shut up, you've got nothing on Cleveland.

Even Steelers fans have to feel sorry for Cleveland fans from time to time. I wonder how long it'll be before we see Colt McCoy starting games, only to have his career drilled into the ground by AFC North linebackers?

Plenty of futility there, but I'd still say the Browns have done more to rip the hearts out of their faithful fans, from their various heartbreaking playoff losses to the cruelty of having their team hijacked to Baltimore.

In terms of pure futility, the Lions have to be tops in the NFL.

I disagree the Browns at least won a couple of titles in the 1960s. The Cubs haven't won anything since the early twentieth Century. I think you can make the argument of the Lions over the Browns as rivals to the Cubs. The Browns are just in a mess right now but the problems are more at QB. The defense played pretty solid and they fought hard against the Chiefs. I think they are better than the Raiders and Rams, although that isn't saying much.

A heroic effort by the 49ers to tie the game! They outplayed the world champs most of the night, but, unfortunately, they just made too many killer mistakes to put them away, and a minute nineteen proved to be way too much time to give Drew Brees when all he needed was a field goal to win. Still, Alex Smith and company far exceeded my expectations based on their play in Seattle last week. It remains to be seen whether they can maintain this high level of play, but even with all the miscues, they've shown far more spark than any of their division opponents so far. The pathetic NFC West still seems to be theirs for the winning as long as they can take care of business against division opponents.

As for the picks - wow. Week two can be even stranger than week one as people try to guess based on just one week's worth of performances. I'm amazed that the field was so tight with so much variation in the picks. It's just wild mass guessing at this point in the season! Who are these teams, anyway? We'll figure out as we go. The weekly tallies:

Figrin D'an: 10-6
Miranda Tarkin: 10-6
Nathanial K'cansce: 10-6
Ryan Pode: 10-6
Yog: 10-6

Jedi Master Carr: 8-8
Lilaena De'Ville: 8-8
Morgan Evanar: 8-8

2. Anne Phoenix: 19-13 (10)
2. Dragon: 19-13 (10)
2. Lilaena De'Ville: 19-13 (11)
2. Miranda Tarkin: 19-13 (9)
6. Figrin D'an: 18-14 (8)

12. Xavier Synik: 16-16 (8)
15. Dai: 15-17 (6)

The first two weeks of the season are often chaotic, because starters are still getting into game shape, teams are adjusting to the early slew of injuries, new offensive and defensive systems are being revealed in earnest, etc. After this weekend, we should have a better idea of who is legit and who isn't, etc.

That said, here's my take on things (not every team is listed here):

Legit Contenders (2-0 teams who are for real): New Orleans, Green Bay, Houston, Pittsburgh

Pretenders (2-0 teams who will falter): Chicago, Kansas City, Tampa Bay

Don't Panic! (1-1 or 0-2 teams who are contenders or will be): NY Jets, New England, Baltimore, Cincinnati, Indianapolis, San Diego, San Francisco, Dallas

Time to Panic! (1-1 or 0-2 teams who are in deep trouble): NY Giants, Minnesota, Arizona, Tennessee

The Unknown Factors (teams to be unsure about): Miami, Philadelphia, Seattle

Xavier Synik
Sep 21st, 2010, 01:04:39 PM
I'd agree with that, with the exception of the G-men. I think you could classify them as unknown. They could lose a whack more games, or they could smarten up and run off a bunch of wins.

The Unknown Factors (teams to be unsure about): Miami, Philadelphia, Seattle Interesting, I disagree about some of your interpretation.

Your legit teams I agree with. New Orleans barely changed since last year, Green Bay looks straight up nasty (except for running), Houston now has a running game to compliment Andre Johnson. Pittsburgh has surprised me. They look fantastic.

I'm not sure Tampa Bay is a pretender. They've been improving slowly year after year. They might go 9-7.

Don't Panic! (1-1 or 0-2 teams who are contenders or will be): NY Jets, New England, Baltimore, Cincinnati, Indianapolis, San Diego, San Francisco, Dallas I agree that Indy, San Diego, Cincinnati, NYJ and probably Baltimore have no reason to panic yet. However Dallas is incredibly poorly coached and San Francisco is... I dunno yet. New England has some holes in their defense though.

Time to Panic! (1-1 or 0-2 teams who are in deep trouble): NY Giants, Minnesota, Arizona, TennesseeArizona traded almost all of their talent. They're terrible, along with STL. If they win 4 games this year I'll be surprised. Farve has no safety valve anymore, and Harvin is out for a while. The Vikings are in trouble unless the opposition is incredibly weak against the run, doubly so if Peterson gets injured. I haven't seen any Giants or Tennessee games.

Jedi Master Carr
Sep 21st, 2010, 04:08:14 PM
I disagree slightly about the Chiefs, while I don't think they will make the playoffs. I think they could win 8-9 games in that lousy division.

Figrin D'an
Sep 21st, 2010, 05:00:53 PM
A case can be made for Tampa to be an unknown commodity. I need to see more from Josh Freeman, and against better competition. They're improved from last year, but they don't have the easiest schedule (New Orleans twice, Atlanta twice, the rest of the AFC North, San Fran), and being a young team, they'll slip up a couple of times when they probably shouldn't. I think 8-8 would be a fantastic season for them, but I'm thinking 6 or 7 wins is more realistic.

I still put Dallas as a contender for now because they aren't losing for lack of effort or ability, they lose because they make dumb mistakes, which can be corrected with the right approach from the coaching staff. That said, I don't have much faith in Wade Philips as a leader, or Jason Garrett in accepting that the Cowboys need to be a power running team first. If they lose to Houston next weekend (which is very possible), it'll be time to panic. 0-3 teams don't win championships very often.

The Giants have shown me nothing to make me believe they are a good football team. They beat a terrible Carolina team at home in sloppy festival of turnovers in which Eli Manning threw 3 INTs, then promptly got waxed by Indy and demonstrated that their offensive line is a mess. I haven't seen much from their revamped defense either. Their only saving grace at this point is that the rest of the NFC East is a disaster too.

I think the Titans better hope that Vince Young gets over his benching quick and plays like he did the second half of last season, or there is no way they sniff the playoffs with the Colts and the improved Texans in the same division.
