Due to the incredibly slow download of the WoW: Cataclysm Beta client, I decided to crack on with Stalker: Call of Pripyat last night. The more I play the Stalker games, the closer the series edges towards my number 1 stop. However, it has to pass some very strong titles to get there - specifically Half Life 2, System Shock 2, Metal Gear Solid and Resident Evil 2.

I only got the PS3 version because I couldn't wait another week for the PC version. Then I bought the PC version anyway and sold my PS3 version.

Not yet played all of RE5 but so far it isn't a patch on RE4 in my opinion. The location of 4 is just too awesome. The village full of crazies, the swamp, the castle, the mines. The prison/facility. Creepy as hell and incredibly atmospheric.

I've got all the Resident Evil games bar the on-rails shooter and the handheld games. I've got, Resident Evil Zero, Resident Evil (remake) , Resident Evil 2, Resident Evil 3, Resident Evil: Code Veronica and Resident Evil 4 on the Gamecube, and I've got Outbreak and Outbreak: File 2 on the PS2. Oh, and RE5 on the PS3. It'd be cool to play Outbreak online. I believe File 2 had online functionality but I dunno if it's still available - I wonder if I can do it through Playstation Network (even if I can, I doubt there'd be anyone else playing it).

I assume your Wii version is the remake that was released for the gamecube? I love the stuff they added. Those Crimson Heads scare the crap out of me.

I've been playing Stalker: Call of Pripyat. Since I started playing the Stalker games last year, I've loved losing myself in the world of The Zone. The 'survival' aspect of survival horror is quite good. You get hungry and so have to eat occasionally. I don't think you get hungry enough, and food is a bit too plentiful. I'm sure there's a mod to make it more realistic. There's one for the original, Shadow of Chernobyl. I'll be returning to that (with said mod, Oblivion Lost, installed) when I finish Call of Pripyat. The mod adds things like vehicle functionality (it was already in the game code, but the mod just unlocks it), a sleeping bag to jump forward 5 hours. While that's good, I think it spoils the 'survival' aspect a bit, since the dark night isn't as scary since you can bypass it. What would be good is if you couldn't use it in certain situations, such as if there was a rainstorm or thunder and lightning - the noise would prevent you from sleeping so you'd have to wait it out in the dark, find somewhere safe, high up and out of reach of the monsters. It just depends on how it could work. For example, if you can 'hear' something then you can't sleep - such as a monster growling nearby, or heavy rain and thunder. The mechanic is certainly in place - noise you make can alert enemies - walking through bushes is louder than open ground, and there's a noise gauge in the HUD. I'm rambling now, lol. I haven't played the Oblivion Lost mod so perhaps there's more added features than I know of. I know at the very least that combat is more realistic (you die from fewer gunshots but so do your enemies), the night is darker, you get hungry quicker and you can sleep up to 5 hours at a time, and you can drive vehicles. That alone will be awesome. I'll play it soon.

Yeah, thats right. You only have to play that game for 10 minutes and you can feel the tension right there. I never felt that from RE4 even though I enjoyed playing the game. I played the demo of RE5 and didnt feel scared at all so never bothered to play it. The controls were awkward in the old resi games but that style of gameplay really added to the tension.

More Halo Reach for me today.

It is kind of funny that I was glad to kill Brutes instead of Elites today. So far I am really enjoying this game but I must admit that Halo ODST's storytelling was a lot stronger than in this game. On the Gameplay side this is kick ass as always.

The difficulty scaling is really well done. The highest difficulty setting cries for a 4 player coop game but so far my lone Wolf aproach gets me through this game.

Yeah, I love Guns of the Patriots! Best game on my PS3 ever!

Been playing Eve Online with some mates. I can't believe how difficult that mission was last night! Level 1 mission in a frigate and I lost the damn ship. I wasn't even engaging the enemy, just trying to get to the objective and bug out. Good job it wasn't an expensive ship and I have another bigger one to use. But I can't use that big one for this mission so I'm gonna lose standing for not completing it - Grrr!

It is not a terrible game but it could not live up to my expectations. The gameplay infact is spot on although the boss fights could have been tougher. The final fight against Liquid Ocelot is more a tribute to the series compared to the boss fights against REX/Liquid in MGS1, Solidus/Ray(s) in MGS2 and the BOSS/Shagohod in MGS3.
Sure the split screen montage in the corridor at the end is epic in presentation but the car chase in MGS1 or the motorcycle escape in MGS3 were way more intense.
But the biggest downer for me was the outro that gave me the impression that I was watching a bad soap opera series final and worst of all the reappearence of Big Boss that tells you once again that if you had not done a single thing since the beginning of MGS1 the end result would have been nearly the same since Liquid was never such an evil motherfucker we just misunderstood his motivation right from the start...seriously?!

Acacius Blade

I basically took the game as one big movie tribute to the Metal Gear Solid series. I loved all the stuff about the PMC's, GW, proxy wars, the Patriots, SOP etc. And I love the names of all the characters in the series. My favourite has to be Ocelot's name given to him by the Mujahadeen for being a sadist - Shalashaska, a russian slang word meaning 'prison'. I love that! He's so infamous he's got his own name with these people. Makes me think of the whole Keyzer Soze thing.

Been playing DC Universe Online. Enjoying it so far. Can't see it having the depth and staying power of WoW. But that's no surprise since Hell hasn't frozen over either.

Character creation isn't as extensive as Champions Online, but it does seem better despite that. Equipping new gear like in WoW, your appearance does change. At character creation there's no options for shoulsder pads, but you can obtain them in-game during play so thats something I find much better over Champions. Plus the fact that you're doing missions for/with or even against the likes of Batman or the Joker (depending on your morality) is a lot of fun. My starting city is Metropolis and its just awesome flying around. I was a bit gutted that the Daily Planet is 'bottled' by maniac (enclosed in a stasis field) but the fact that its there is awesome enough, along with LexCorp HQ and a simply vast cityscape to explore. For the moment the locations are limited to Gotham and Metropolis but they're so big it's not an issue for me yet. A level cap of 30 seems to be limiting for a number of players judging by the Steam forums. But content patches can sort that out and I'm a slow leveller anyway (well, in WoW anyways!)

I've made a few characters and the one I've concentrated on is Minerva: she can fly, has sorcery as her power and I chose Wonder Woman as her mentor while her weapon of choice is a staff. I've yet to play the black-clad, white-caped Afro Avenger I made but I have a free day tomorrow :)

I've not returned to DC Universe Online since the weekend I bought it. Got to Level 20 and thought "Bloody hell this is boring". Once again, it's a perfect example of the developers/publishers hoping the source material will carry it. We're gamers. We want gameplay; Not an incomplete product with class combinations that are broken, unimaginative combat. I'd say it's on par with Champions Online when that was released - fun for the first weekend, then boring and repetetive due to lack of content and depth.

I did start re-playing Bioshock. I got up to Hephaestus but have to start again again as I formatted by PC and forgot to back-up the saves. The reason for the format was Stalker: Call of Pripyat. It decided to stop working. I'd tried various fixes, none of which succeeded in allowing me to launch the game. I did manage to launch it after reinstalling, but after it crashing once I'd increased the graphical settings it then returned to the good old "X-Ray 1.6 Engine has stopped working." upon launching the .exe.

But post-format it's running like a dream, and even better thanks to the Reloaded mod I installed which fixes several bugs, improves textures, adds to the atmosphere of the game allowing it to recapture more of the forboding, creepy, unsettling feel of the first game. The sky textures are simply brilliant and dynamic. When a blowout occurs you have to get to a protective safe area but if you manage to find one that allows you to see the sky while inside, it's just awesome! The clouds part and it looks like a huge explosion in the sky with this horrible orange/red searing mass of energy above you, like the devil reaching out to grab you. That coupled with the explosions and flashes make it really quite intimidating. Human NPC's such as other stalkers or bandits caught in the open are doomed - and some are not killed but get their brains fried and they turn into zombies. I was on my way back to the derelict ship I use as a base when I passed some bandits sitting off taking a breather on the side of a hill. Just as I reached Skadovsk the blowout started so I just made it really! After it passed I went back the way I came and the three of them were still sitting their, zombified. As I approached they got up and started to shoot at me awkwardly. That was an awesome moment!

The mod also increases the draw distance so that wen it's a clear day to can see ridiculously far. If I could get high enough I'm sure I could see from one side of the area to the other. And the weather is beefed up to an incredible degree. Fog for example: You start on a hill above a dried-up river basin. In that basin is a derelict ship. beyond it is a road that leads up a hill and around to a warehouse/yard. If I stand at the edge of that starting hill, I can see just beyond the ship in the unmodified version, the ship itself being crystal clear, the road beyond fading into the distance fog and the warehouse might as well not be there. With this mod, I can see a bridge around and beyond the warehouse from that same spot more or less. And when the fog and rain kick in, again from that same spot I had to walk to the bottom of that starting hill for the derelict to be a murky silhouette. Just incredible. I have no intentions of leaving this area any time soon and it's the first of three major regions in the game. With a number of missions to carry out, dozens of locations to visit with bandits, stalkers and mutants lurking along the way, there's just so much to do.

If you guys haven't played any of the Stalker games I can't recommend them enough. With mods, the original still looks great even by todays standards. It can prove a challenge to get running on some systems given it's bugs, but they are definitely worth putting up with/working round with fixes if you can. Some say the original is the crown jewel of the series and the second game (prequel) being the weakest but I honestly think they are all classics worthy of attention. The first for being just that and more, from it's original take on the FPS genre by combining survival horror and RPG elements into the often brainless run-and-gun champion-of-the-consoles genre in one of the most realistic yet at the same time imaginative and original settings ever in a game. The second improved on the graphics but lost some of the originals creepy atmosphere, but again is resolved by 3rd party modifications. Plus the addition of being able to modify and repair your gear added some nice depth, and the fun yet at-times broken factions warfare adds a dynamic element to the areas in that territory can change hands during play. Again, mods fix this and there's even mods that add it to the original.

The 3rd outing and true sequel - Call of Pripyat - is the most well-made and bugless (but not bug-free) version, with an improved UI and inventory system, DX11 graphical support and very well-realised locations including a larger version of Pripyat than the originals that make it, so far, my favourite. Though the games do have their jumpy moments, they are genuinely scary experiences in terms of tension. I was at a location north-west of the derelict ship I call home, in a place called the Sawmill. Literally, a disused sawmill with a warehouse, ouside covered storage area, what looks like a water tower, and a one-storey derelict building with attic. I'd foolishly ran back there to loot the corpses of some zombified stalkers I'd dispatched previously, but it was late and by the time I got there it was almost midnight and getting very dark. I had a building I could hide out in the attic in, or I could brave the long walk back to the ship - I say walk since I couldn't run due to the scavenged equipment I was carrying, that's why I was out there in the first place. So I decided to stay put. I was already shaken as on my return there were a handful of Fleshes (mutant pigs with many eyes and shard pincer-like stalks for legs) and two mutant boars that decided I looked tasty.

So I'm up in the attic, the roof is in bad shape with holes and gaps in it. One end of the attic, the boards are damaged and I can see below into the room which itself has half the wall missing. It's pretty quiet and very dark. So I turn on my flashlight which just seems to make is even creepier as the shadows in the game are very cool. The flashlight's small cone of illumination just seems to accentuate the surrounding blackness. So I crouch behind some boxes to roleplay the fact that I'm hiding out until morning whil i actually get comfortable in my computer chair. I even at that point got undressed and into my pyjamas as if I really was settling down for the night. So I'm in the chair, in my PJ's, with the lights off and me headset on. All of a sudden his horrid screetch! More Fleshes. Now I know I'm safe in the attic and they can't get me but bloody hell was I scared! Just the feeling that I couldn't leave without having to deal with them had me on edge. So I sat up and leaned towards the monitor, on alert. I uncrouch and move to the gap in the boards for a peak. It's hard to see even with the flashlight but I turn it on anyway. They see me and let out another awful high-pitched scream before running off in frustration at their out-of-reach supper. So for the next I'm not sure how long I'm watching them and listening to them. I'm not sure how fast the in-game minutes go by but it feels so slow when you're in this situation!

Eventually I decide to squeeze through the gap in the roof and head up on top. Soon the Fleshes are joined by two even more frightening and vicious miscreations - Pseudodogs. They look sorta like wolves but they have no snout, and a really big bloodied maw filled with a wicked grin of razor-sharp teeth. Not easily scared by gunfire, they leap at you when they've closed the distance and the more mature ones have the ability to attack you with psychic projections of itself. If you shoot them, they disappear but you have to kill the real one to end the onslaught so usually it results in a lot of ammo wasted. Again, I was safe, but anything but relaxed. The pseudodogs quickly killed the two Fleshes, adding to the corpses of my previous battle. Thats when one of the most fascinating elements of the game kicks in. The A-Life. Whether you're present or not, the world of Stalker is a living, breathing, dynamic one. I watched in darkness, my flashlight now off so as not to disturb the creatures, as the pseudodogs dragged the Fleshes corpses along the ground to a spot they deemed suitable to stop and eat. It was so cool! They'd take a few steps back with all four legs before jerking their heads back, dragging the corpse a few inches before taking a few more steps back and repeating the process. Just brilliant.

During my stint as David Attenborough on that roof, I braved a thunderstorm amid rain and lightning. And the lightning is truly something to behold in this game! The changes in light and shadows when the lightning strikes is breath-taking! Seriously, check it out on Youtube! Trees that are invisible in the distance are illuminated as silhouettes whenever the lightning strikes, highlighting hills, rocks, bushes, buildings, telegraph/electricity poles, even mutants/NPC's on the move and other snippets of detail across the murky landscape between you and the source of the light. Eventually late night turned into early morning and around 4am the red glow appeared on the cloudy horizon. At first I thought it was another blowout and I was still trapped on the roof and somehow doubted this shabby building would provide adequate shelter. There was the warehouse on the other side of the yard/road but with so many enemies around I didn't fancy hiding out in a shelter that was limited to ground level with huge open entrances large enough for trucks to pass through. But it was just the birth of the sunrise. And what a sight it was as that dim red turned to pink and then to salmon-orange as it rolled closer across the sky. The clouds behind me took on a golden glow as daybreak approached, with the stars above slowly fading away and the darkness pulled back to breath new light across the Zone. At that point a mutant boar strolle dinto the Sawmill's grounds and the pseudodogs decided it was time for breakfast. The scrap occured on the far side, opposite to the way I was to make my escape. As much as I wanted to watch, I leapt down from the roof quickly rather than climbing into the attic and using the ladder and started making my way back to the Skadovsk. Along the way a few blind dogs tried to take me on but once I killed the first one on it's first run, the others scattered and were easy pickings as they ran around me scared. Eventually, easily over an hour of realtime later, I was back at the Skadovsk, unloaded all my loot into my stash box and started deciding what I was keeping (ammo, new guns, supplies) and what I was selling (extra guns I already had a version of). I made enough cash to order a sniper rifle off the fence, Nimble, but instead repaired my armour and upgraded some gear.

Just one tale of many that, collectively, are quickly making up my favourite gaming experience ever.

Whenever there's a stint of sales on Steam, there's often a special pack of Shadow of Chernobyl and Call of Pripyat together. I think the reason the 2nd game (Clear Sky, prequel to Shadow of Chernobyl) is never included is because it was self-published by the developers whereas the other two weren't. Just a guess!?

How the shit am I the only person here playing Fallout: New Vegas

Here's reasons why you should be too:
My sidekick is an irradiated Mexican ghoul named Raul who is a gunslinger and has a fancy, well-coiffed moustache
You can set the game to require you to sleep and drink water. I've been drinking out of dirty irradiated toilets to live. You haven't survived shit until you've had to do this.
I had to hire whores for a casino catering to johns with ridiculous tastes. One wanted to have sex with a robot. I programmed a robot to be a whore. And no, it's not an ergonomic kind of robot you'd want to have sex with. When I turned it on, it asked me to assume the position
The main bad guys are a group of maniacal fascists trying to reinvent the Roman Empire

Sweet holy shit this game is everything that I loved best about Fallout 2 and 3 rolled into one.

I installed this on Steam. Graphics are just incredible compared to the PS3 version I've already completed. Mark hamill as The Joker is awesome. I love the crap he spews over the communication system throughout the game. The first time you get to prowl around stalking the thugs before you actually get outside he says something like "I don't even think he's real!" - fuckin' love it!

Amnesia: The Dark Descent.

Charlie, my fellow System Shockee - you should play this mate! The storytelling style as well as the plot is very Lovecraftian and the tension and gameplay remind me of System Shock. But there's no weapons for you to kill the monsters with so it's a choice of running, hiding or dying. You can close doors and then barricade them with boxes or slide a table across it to slow them down but eventually they'll break through so you need to be gone ASAP! A list of things you'll need.

More Fallout New Vegas. Highlights recently:
I've been banned from every casino in Vegas. The three families don't like it when you bleed them for over 10,000 chips on blackjack. Still, they comped me the high roller suite at every casino and I got free meals, free booze, free drugs, and all sorts of other high roller perks.
Deathclaws (Christin calls them atomic rancors) are nastier than in previous games and no fun to fight.
Traded Veronica (my lesbian armored punching machine sidekick) for Boone (my terse, psychotic, baby-murdering PTSD sniper sidekick)
Hoover Dam is fucking massive
I upgraded my PipBoy 3000 to a PimpBoy 3,000,000,000. It is now gold plated, diamond encrusted, with rubies for buttons, and swanky 70's funk music plays when I use it. Also if I look at it in the daylight all the bling makes it almost unreadable!

CS:S mostly while at home. More Rebellion while at work. My brain died on me at work after I spent an hour naming each ship of a production run of 1,000 DP20 Corellian Gunships to act as anti-starfighter escorts for my fleet of Mon Calamari Cruisers, Dauntless Cruisers, and Bulwark Battlecruisers. I was going to send a fleet of about 15 ships to blockade each of the one hundred Imperial planets left over.

But at least it was worth something. I built 10 Super Star Destroyers as the Empire one game to invade the Corellian Sector with, and the game was over in 5 seconds because the first planet I invaded, Commenor, ended up with me capturing Luke Skywalker, which was the final goal that ended the game. :lol

BGO is free, and browser-based. When it comes to MMOs, "free" is obviously a relative term: you can spend real-world money in order to buy Cubits, which allow you to buy certain ships, to level up your systems beyond a particular point, etc. However, the game allows you to loot Cubits from killing NPCs as well, which is a refreshing change. Playing without paying is actually a viable option.

The story was something we were worried about before hand... and to be honest, it's not that bad. They've set it during the back half of Season 2: after the Pegasus shows up, but before Lee becomes a Major. The basic premise is that a weird alien gizmo overloaded your FTL and shot you into a mysterious, unknown sector: and there's evidence that the Colonials and Cylons have been there before. As with most games based on shows, they've added new ships and things to make it more viable for players, but it "feels" like Battlestar, even if it doesn't necessarily fit perfectly with the canon.

We were also a bit worried about the graphics while you're wandering around. The good news is that, at the moment, that accounts for a tiny part of the game. You can land on Galactica or elsewhere to repair your ship, buy upgrades, and to activate your "dailies" (get x amount of tylium, destroy y enemies, scan z asteroids, etc) which give you XP and resources. You get your daily assignments from Apollo, but if you blow anything up, you go and brag about it to Starbuck. There are a few basic missions from the Old Man, but it looks like they're intending to add more.

The actual bulk of the game is flying around and blowing stuff up. The controls and GUI took some getting used to, as did the equipment upgrades. Depending on what ship you pick, you get a different balance of Hull, Computer, Weapons, and Engine slots. You can install enhanced sensor grids, afterburners, decoy drones to evade missiles, and there are a selection of ECM gizmos that fill the role of buffs and de-buffs: you can scramble someone's weapons or nerf their acceleration and turn speed; or you can boost your own. Or both.

It isn't the best MMO in the world. It's still in Open Beta so it may improve, but at the moment there aren't that many quests or missions. It is however a lot of fun; even if it's purely for the novelty value of cruising around in a Viper, Raptor, or Raider and blowing stuff up.

I dabbled into the Free MMO Spiral Knights. Visuals are nice, so far I've been able to play without paying for anything. The game appears to be limited by an "energy" limit that your toon has. This energy is used to enter the dungeons and is used each time you take an elevator down to a lower floor. Seems really simple so far, but I've only played a few hours. The game has an emphasis on crafting and leveling items and feels a little like Phantasy Star in that regard.

Re-created Warlord Teradoc's Crimson Fleet at work. Sadly I had only comissioned 18 Mark 1 Victory Star Destroyers by the time I found and crushed the Rebel Headquarters. I hate the new Rebel MC30a Cruiser, but I loves me TIE Defender hordes (ala Lord Shadowspawn) led by Boba Fett. I won, but I lost 2 ISDs and about 70 squadrons of starfighters, vs the Rebels losing something along the lines of 25 Mon Calamari Star Cruisers, 60 Support Capital ships, and some 60 Squadrons of starfighters. |I

I think Bouncers are much harder than Rosie's. You can strafe in and out of cover and whittle down their health whereas the Bouncers can charge you, snare you by drilling into the ground and blur your vision with that roar of theirs. To have to face a Bouncer on the first go is bad enough but at that point in the game you have very little in the way of stopping power. I think I had maybe 4 armour-piercing pistol rounds. Plus on my first playthrough when you get the telekinesus plasmid I'd replaced my Electro Bolt with it to keep Incinerate, so I was buggered and barely handled the bastard first time round. It was a combination of setting him on fire then running around to get the most out of the flames until they died before doing it again. Thank God for the health stations becuse I ran out of fiurst aid kits pretty quickly.

Electric Buck for the shotgun works wonders against Bouncers.

Well after playing pretty much every single spare minute I can, I will definitely say this game is fuckin' awesome!

I haven't totally sided with one faction, I'm kinda just winging it and playing along with what's convenient at the time.

Getting to Nellis AFB was a major pain in the ass...those bloody bombers were brutal and killed me numerous times, until I pretty much did opposite of what the note said and went NE just following the cliff line and then running along the fence, took me a whole frickin minute that way.

It was also a pain in the ass to find Cerulean Robotics, but hey who wouldn't want a robot whore?

Had I known Neil was a temporary companion. I wouldn't have gone through all the trouble of recruiting him. Although had I not done that I wouldn't have been able to come across Raul, who would've thunk? He was born where I was! :lol

More to come on where I'm at with this at a later time...I've yet to figure out a tactic to kill those damn deathclaws.

Regarding the Boomers yes I got stuck there for a day and it pissed me off. It's more dependent on dumb luck and not stopping. It does not hurt to wear a shitload of armor and take a lot of drugs though!

Cerulean also got me stuck because everything in Freeside tends to look the same because everybody is poor and broke and shit. But yes I pressed onward because Fisto is hilarious

I never bothered with Neil. I raided Black Mountain on accident really, and after killing Tabitha and everybody else I found him on the way out and was like "Uhhhh...well they're all dead now so did I win anything?"

As far as deathclaws, this probably depends on the build your character is on. My first character is gun intensive, so I found that at minimum, you want a gun in .308 with armor piercing ammo, and you probably want to fire from elevated safety when possible. Clearing Quarry Junction and the Deathclaw Promontory are fucking hard if you're low level, period. I highly recommend the .50 caliber anti-material rifle with AP ammunition, and a chemical cocktail of psycho, steady, jet, and if you think those fuckers might even breathe on you, med-x.

If you haven't guessed it, my character is high pretty much all the time.

Also holy fucking shit you have to play it on hardcore mode. You haven't survived shit until you've had to drink out of a dirty and irradiated toilet to live.

I generally lay down a few mines before I engage those guys. Then I try my best to hobble them, aiming for the legs, once their speed is crippled it's just a matter of kiting them to death.

Mines are good because if your shots don't cripple the legs before they reach you the mines will either kill or hobble it for you.

Finished Bioshock. Very fun :)

For some reason, whether they are Rosies or Bouncers, I don't really have trouble with either one of them. I managed to get the combat tonic or whatever that shocks anything that physically hits you. Made dealing with enemies very very easy. Frankly it was a godsend since my aim isn't really all that stellar to begin with ^_^;

Also, I couldn't find it in myself to harvest the little sisters, so I saved every one I came across. Next go-round I'll harvest them I suppose.

The fight with Fontaine I gotta admit was crazy easy. I was expecting something a bit more challenging. Course, it might've been the types of plasmids I was using and the conventional weapons I had. Arctic blast 3 + shotgun (customized with rapid fire) makes him pretty much a cakewalk.

So after running into what threatened to be a game-crippling save game bug in New Vegas, I worked my way around it just fine. My Legionary is level eight, hated by the NCR, and I've just killed the entire officer corps of Camp Forlorn Hope. I may loop around and kill all the other soldiers there and loot it.

Funny enough, my general karma is still rated "Very Good". There's something to being a hero from a certain point of view :D

Also I got my very first confirmed bachelor line of dialogue, and got to hit on an uncomfortable NCR Major in the Mojave Outpost. He didn't seem to be offended by my advances, but it sounds like the NCR has something akin to a Don't Ask, Don't Tell policy in place and he's worried about appearing to be "more than friends" :lol He did mention that the Legion were more tolerant about "that sort of thing" So hooray for being progressive!

So far I have played through the first two episodes of season 1. It's pretty simple fun, but I'm enjoying it. If you've played any of the other Lego games, you'll know whaty ou're in for :)

Also been playing a few hours of Fallout New Vegas today. I seem to have fallen in with the NCR by accident :uhoh

It's easy to have a cozy relationship with the NCR as they're more or less the gatekeepers for a lot of the real estate in the Mojave Desert, and you want to stay neutral with them at the very least.

Of course I say this, and then I use the ARCHIMEDES II weapon at Helios One to vaporize their entire platoon garrison at the plant and now I have Rangers actively tracking me down to assassinate me.

Think I might have just shot myself in the foot where the Brotherhood of Steel is concerned.

I was just done with chasing off the NCR ranger from that super secret Brotherhood bunker, went back to deliver the good news - and forgot to take off my NCR fatigues! Before I could change outfits, Boone had taken out the Brotherhood Elder with a headshot.

So I did the decent thing, stole his robes, went down into the bunker, hacked the turret control terminal and reprogrammed the turrets to kill Brotherhood personnel on sight.

Did you have a save prior, or if you did, did you just say "screw it" and keep on trucking? I ask because if you end up wiping out The Brotherhood it's going to make recruiting Veronica just about impossible and that's a shame because she's one of my favorite companion NPC's.

I need to get me New Vegas! It sounds so much better than Fallout 3!

It keeps Fallout 3's great design and gameplay mechanics but the spirit of the game is much more in keeping with Fallout 1 and 2.

The problem with Fallout 3 is that the Capitol Wasteland is almost too bleak. Civilization doesn't feel like it's gonna take root there, and with a few exceptions you just don't have the same sort of communities and interactions. Mind you, this isn't a critique of the game so much as to say that Washington DC after World War III is simply crushed. It's completely understandable that it would be much more primal and more devastated than other areas.

The one true critique I have of Fallout 3 that New Vegas most assuredly fixes is that you just cannot become a God King sort of character the same way you did in Fallout 3. Further, the outcomes of the plot in Fallout 3 were very black and white, and the storyline relied upon a lot of father/child tropes and a healthy dollop of deux ex machina at hte end. The Fallout universe has always thrived on morally gray themes, and it felt a little lacking before.

New Vegas probably has thousands of possible endings, and is much more dependent on your choices along the way in shaping your epilogue. To this end, you sacrifice the ability to play the game after you've beaten it. Honestly, that's a good thing. You should be forced to play through multiple times in order to do everything, because choices in a game do more than just open doors, they also close some others.

To give you some basic sense of how the game can flow, you can align yourself with four main factions:

Caesar's Legion
The New California Republic
Mr. House
You can also become your own faction, with the aid of Yes Man

Now having four considerably different story arcs would be cool, but if that isn't enough, you can also align yourself with a big number of minor factions too, including:

The Brotherhood of Steel
The Powder Gangers
The Followers of the Apocalypse
The Boomers
The Great Khans
The Omertas
The White Glove Society
The Enclave Remnant
The Chairmen
The Kings

And these are just the factions with enough pull for you to either join them or use them to influence the main plot. Some of the main factions have minor sub-factions within them (Caesar's Frumentarii or NCR's Rangers) and there's also the dozens of gangs, cults, and other assorted organizations you don't join or control but have their own extensive stories that form the background noise of the Mojave wastes.

The Mojave Wasteland isn't just geographically big. It's culturally vast. It feels much more like there's been 200 years for civilization to crawl out from under hiding in vaults to try to scratch together a society again. There's politics, there's intrigue, there's double dealing, ethical quandries, and black and white don't really exist in and of themselves.

The NCR is the consensus "good guy" faction but there's a lot of crap they pull that is objectionable and considerably so, depending on your character's entirely-rational point of view. It's widely discussed that they probably don't have the people of the Mojave's best interests at heart, and are much more inclined to barely keep the peace and milk the electricity from the Hoover Dam and whatever resources they can while holding the line and send it back to California. Add a potential war crimes subplot in the mix and you can't blame somebody for being pushed over the edge by the men and women under the bear's flag.

The Legion, while easily the villains of the lot and hated by almost all, have their strong suites. It's the classic "Mussolini at least made the trains run on time" argument, in the sense that while the Legion is a violent and autocratic dictatorship propped up on slavery, they do not tolerate the sort of depredation and massive criminal acts like highway banditry, murder, theft, etc that the NCR does little to anything about. In fact, Caesar is an extremely articulate and thoughtful social engineer, it could be said. While it might be difficult to agree with the methods, some do and it doesn't all come down to moustache twirling villainy for it's own sake.

Either the Legion is giving me the cold shoulder, or I've hit some kind of glitch. Whenever I try to talk to Caesar, or Vulpes.. whatshisface, the game zooms in on them for a few seconds as if it's about to begin a conversation and then zooms out :( I know my reputation with them is Vilified but I'm dressed in Legion armour and I've got the Mark of Caesar in my inventory. Won't they even speak to me?

Taataani Meorrrei
Apr 26th, 2011, 08:07:27 PM
Are you villified after getting the Mark of Caesar? If so, I'm surprised that you even got close enough to Caesar to talk to him, even in Legion armor, because the Praetorians and mongrels would've aggro'd you.

Have you reverted to a save and tried again? That's odd.

Went to the Gamorrah for a hot little number; can't remember her name, but that doesn't really matter now, does it. Then I left. I pretty much only went there for tail, then it was off to find Benny. I let him escape so I could specifically crucify him, and that's exactly what I did :eee

I've basically thrown in my lot with Caesar and his Legion, mostly since Charley told me it was pretty much exclusively a boy's club and I don't care if I'm a girl I want in. It's interesting seeing how the character dialogue changes when confronted with a female lead.

I've got Boone waiting for me back at the Lucky 38 since I want him as far away from my current activities as possible.

Started a single-player game of Alpha Centauri as The Hive. I thought I was expanding rather quickly but am somehow backed up against the coastline. That will have to be remedied with a contingent of Synthemetal Sentinels armed with Impact Hammers! Vendetta upon you, CEO Nwabudike Morgan of Morgan Industries! You and your bloated followers shall not stand in the way of my social experiments!

Gotta say, I love the story and characters of Alpha Centauri. The ideologies of each faction leader make for an interesting read. I remember reading the online novella when the game was still in development.

Also re-subscribed to WoW. Made a Goblin Hunter and really enjoying it so far. This will be my very first horde character I've properly done. Got a Troll Mage to level 8 in the past, but I plan to see this bad boy through to Level 85. Currently Level 11, got my pet panther called Bob. I really like the changes so far - no need for ammo, managing my focus quite well, and starting at level 1 with a pet was awesome.

And I also have an urge to play KOTOR so that will very likely get installed tonight when I get home from work.

My Human Hive is unsurpassed! I've wiped out the Morganites and claimed their bases as my own, and the bookworms at The University have but one single stronghold left - and the knowledge within shall soon be mine! But I have to say, I'm ashamed of my slow expansion, I'm usually much quicker off the mark with Yang's minions. I should have spread across the continent much earlier.

Once I've conquered the planet I may start again, perhaps on a random map rather than the "Map of Planet" which always looks the same with the same landmarks. Lack of fertile land near my starting region nerfed The Planetary Transit System (a secret project - wonder in Civilisation terms) which allows new bases to start at size 3 - the lack of nutrients straight away causes starvation so my population drops to two instantly.

There's got to be a way to take advantage of that project early in the game when nutrient production is low. I'll have to check the tech tree since no matter how good the land is, you're limited to how much you can extract at the start, but that project comes quite early. Grr!

Still not started KOTOR yet. I am off tomorrow though so it shall be a Day of Games. A good multi-hour sesh on New Vegas which will result in a few episodes uploaded over the course of the weekend (since I never did a mid-week one).

There are two DLCs. One is free (Bring Down the Sky), set on a "hijacked mobile asteroid", and introduces a new race of aliens (Batarians - don't know if they're in the later games). The other (Pinnacle Station) costs $5, but has a ton of stuff - you can unlock "Shepard's Apartment", and also a holographic training room where you can run around and shoot things: which is apparently quite useful for unlocking all of those "kill 150 targets with a shotgun" type achievements (if you didn't already know, that lets you add "Shotgun"/etc specialism to a class that wouldn't normally get it when you replay).

Basically, they just add a couple of planets with a couple of bonus assignments, a couple of new achievements, and a couple of hours of extra gameplay; and makes it possible to go from Level 1 to Level 60 in a single play-through, rather than having to replay the first few stages with a completed character.

I'm playing BDTS this evening - I'll let you know if it's worth the effort of replaying the game to the point where you can access them. :)

I finally beat Duke Nukem Forever

I must admit I have mixed feelings about this game. On the one hand some boss fights are insane in the difficulty department but this normally makes it just more rewarding for me in the end but on the other hand a lot of early levels are just ugly and don't get me started on texture quality...since you can basicly tell which textures where done first and which one last.
The levels later in the game are pretty good.

Duke makes one thing better than Bioshock and therefore has the most nonphysics based flooded level since No One lives Forever (The only game that does this better is Hydrophobia btw but they have physics engine for that!). The feeling of rising water levels really gives you the urge to act quicker.

Another thing I really liked are the minigames and ego items. I am a huge sucker for minigames that is why I spend hours in Rockstar Games. I love bowling in GTA and Liars Dice in Red Dead Redemption.

So my finally thoughts on this game are:
Would I recommend this game? Probably not. Why? Did I not have fun with this game? Well I did and I now have a Gamerscore of 900/1000G. Well the truth is Duke Nukem Forever is a relict of the past and I consider it as such. Nothing in this game is brilliant and new like it was back in 2001 when they released the infamous 10 years of Duke Trailer that featured a lot of stuff people had never seen before in a FPS.

Duke Nukem the Relict
So what is Duke Nukem Forever it is a relict that shows us how far gaming has come in 15 years. Duke Nukem Forever tried to do what other games did in 2 or 3 iterations in just one step just to be released at a time where all of its ambitious goals have been already achieved by other products.

The future of FPS
Cliffy B (Creative Director and Producer of "Gears of War" at Epic Games) said 2 years ago that the future of FPS games are RPGs and I must admit when I look at this forum I guess I have to agree. We could call our forum Mass-Effect- & Fallout-Fans lately. Randy Pitchford will have to show us that Duke Nukem will still have a place in this future.

I was whistling that in work the other day, and started driving people mad. And yes, it goes without saying that the Gerudo Valley theme is freakin' awesome!

I started playing Mass Effect 2. :ohno

The intro bit is evil. Not only do you have the shock of the Normandy getting exploded... but all the bloody controls and interfaces changed. I may have had a teensy bit of a panic that I wouldn't get to the bridge fast enough to save Seth Green. ^_^;

Grats on conquering the evil Water Temple!

Since KOTOR has been an absolute bitch (multiple crashes, characters freezing to the spot, saves disappearing) I've decided to start playing Fallout 3. I have to admit, I'm seriously excited about sinking my teeth into this one, and with six days off work coming up as of Thursday, well, I know what I'll be doing with my free time. :D

I completed Homefront by Kaos studios(Khendon Sevon worked on this game) yesterday. I must admit I had a great time while it lasted and this is where the real problem is: It did not last long enough.

Homefront is a first-person shooter (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/First-person_shooter) video game developed by now defunct Kaos Studios (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kaos_Studios) and published by THQ (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/THQ), in which players play as members of a resistance movement (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Resistance_movement) fighting against a near-future Korean (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Korea) military occupation of the United States (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States).

This game is actually Call of Duty for adults. The characters are not cardboard heros. Warcrimes happen but they are there to support the narrative and not for the thrill of teenagers.

It is about war and it's consequences for the civilians. All your actions lead to reactions. Already the Half-Life 1 like bus/railway intro shows you that this time duty does not call this time you really fight for freedom and survival.

The rest feels a lot like COD. The controls and the weapons have the same flair and the AI is just as smart/dumb as in COD. The game has got nice establishing shots but they are never as frequent and overused as in COD.

Your teammates do really help and they feel like real characters and not like Staff Sgt. John the fifth that was killed by generic sniper Nr2 like the other Johns before.

If this game is reduced on Steam pick it up. It is cool just not worth the full price.

Not playing overly much, however for the last month I've been playing on Mastermoves.eu (http://www.mastermoves.eu) - specifically Powerboats (http://www.boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/38531/powerboats) (a board game). The free registration option is a bit limited (max of 3 tournaments) but I'm enjoying it a lot, playing against others on the ladder as well as a couple of personal threads. Fun way to burn 5 mins a couple of times through the day. :)

It's terrible, really. I stopped playing at 22:30 with every intention of making good on a promise to post today, and in the last two hours all I've done is scribbled a few notes and procrastinated over browsing everything and anything Fallout related in a desperate bid to sate my wasteland hunger. It is all I can do to actually not resume playing.

Finished Rise of the Argonauts last night. It was fun, and although it didn't get good marks from critics I enjoyed it for all of the choices it allows you to make while talking with people. Choosing which gods to dedicated your deeds to was probably my favorite part about it.

Unfortunately the ending is a bit lackluster, and considering that there's so much exposition throughout the entire game, the ending is too short and feels like the writers gave in and tacked it on.

I always play as an Orc - mainly because all the human-looking characters look awful, and I don't like the other non-human-looking races.

Been playing a lot of Call of Pripyat over the last week (hence still no New Vegas Episode 3) and I finally reached the city of Pripyat and decided to share this:

I agree with you there Peter. The models in Oblivion are all uuuugly. I don't think they hired a lot of voice actors either because so many of the male NPCs sound the same.

Was that lightning storm a random occurence? If so, that is cool as hell. Even if it was a plot-triggered element, its still pretty neat... but if the game is randomly generating storms, that's badass.

Just Cause 2. It dawned upon me how huge this game is when I tried flying an aircraft across the island..

Peter McCoy

Yup - it's completely random. I honestly don't know if there are scripted ones, but it definitely does random ones too. The mod pack I'm using has a mod called Atmosfear with it - completely enhances the weather effects to make if more immersive and - when it's bad weather - oppressive. The difference in weather with it are incredible. A normal sunny day can be very pleasant and I'd honestly go for a picnic if not for the mutants skulking in the undergrowth. An overcast day can be foreboding while the lightning and rain etc makes me downright terrified!

And here's me trying to find cover from a blowout. I was very picky about where I was going to seek sanctuary from the imminent nuclear blastwave - I could have stayed put but wanted to be amongst friends, lol!

Absolutely loving it. I adore the alternate areas. By that I mean the maintenence areas etc that are not part of the test chambers. The aesthetics are fantastic. It was the same with the first game - all those places you weren't supposed to be in were brilliant.
