I honestly think Rapture still holds water, but this new setting will really be a breath of fresh air. And it makes you think where else they may take it. The sky's the limit.

Ten Things You Should Know About BioShock Infinite: http://irrationalgames.com/insider/ten-things-you-should-know-about-bioshock-infinite-the-recap/
* Columbia is a living, breathing society whose citizens will respond to you in diverse–and unpredictable–ways.
* In BioShock Infinite, you play a defined, fleshed-out character: former Pinkerton agent Booker DeWitt.
* Your companion character Elizabeth aids you in combat–but only if and when you want her to.
* BioShock Infinite is set during a formative time in American history, as the country was exploding onto the world stage.
* Sky-Lines can be used for both movement and combat, significantly expanding your tactical opportunities.
* Combat can involve many enemies at one time, with a much broader range of encounters than the original BioShock.
* BioShock Infinite is built on a new engine, with none of Irrational’s code or assets from previous BioShock games remaining.
* Irrational sees “BioShock” as more than just one setting–and the implications of that will become more and more clear over time.
* Columbia is composed of semi-autonomous floating buildings which have a wealth of unique gameplay properties.
* Two factions battle for control over Columbia, the status quo-enforcing powers that be, and the internationalist Vox Populi.

Loved the pace of the combat. Loved the dynamic of the world. Loved the relationship with Elizabeth; dialogue as well as function.
This could be epic.
I personally love scripted events in games. That part where the Flying Daddy lands. Then just as it turns to look at you, it's eyes go red and the lightning strikes. Just great! :)
I honestly don't know whether to re-install Bioshock now instead of what I had planned to play.

2 Things I have to say about this:
1. This was awesome and I really think I get what they try to achieve.
2. This is as much a gameplay trailer as the presentation of Halo 2 at E3 2003 was.
If they really want to have that natural gameplay they will need till early 2012 like they are planning to do anyway.
I think they are on the right track and I guess I will enjoy Bioshock Infinite more than my trip to Rapture.

...I will enjoy Bioshock Infinite more than my trip to Rapture.
I won't. I'm not saying one will be better than the other. I just think that Rapture (and essentially Bioshock) is far too unique to make that comment personally.
Could Bioshock Infinite exist without the first game? Possibly, but would it have as much depth and character? To me, that gameplay trailer alone suggests not. Similarly, none of them would exist were it not for System Shock 2. I haven't had the pleasure of playing the original game but I've no doubt that's the cornerstone in terms of gameplay and sense of place in the games I've mentioned. Each step forward has meant better visuas, better writing. And rightly so - I'd expect anybody to take what they've done, ingest and learn from it, then go forward with that knowledge to build upon the starting point. Bioshock had the best locations, whereas the sequels were not as memorable for me - but I was more emotionally invested in Bioshock 2's story. I think Infinite has - at least going by that 10min preview - combined the best of both games to take the next step forward.
Having another character on your side changes the way you perceive any given situation. I'm more ready to take bigger risks if an NPC ally is in danger - especially if they're a fully-fleshed out character with a personality and there's a real relationship with my character. With Bioshock, I could avoid bad situations and take another route - but if I have to make the difficult choice to help Elizabeth - I'm going to. As Jack in Bioshock, I had no emotional involvement. He was a voiceless, faceless vessel for me to explore and kill throughout Rapture's dilapidated, leaking hallways. The Vita-chambers meant I could be careless and run into the fray with complete disregard and just go nuts with plasmids and a wrench. But if someone else is with me, I'm not as willing to do that. I may have complete confidence in my own abilities - but what of my companion. Is she as strong, or as quick? And if the unthinkable happens, will there be Vita-chambers in Columbia? Is the death of either character a game-over situation and return to the last saved game? Even if thats's not the case, and there are resurrection points - I wouldn't feel right. To me, that's not the same person anymore. It sounds like them, looks like them, acts like them. But I know. I guess I'll be my usual anal self with this game and reload in the event that Elizabeth 're-spawns' after death. If it is game over then I'll have to reload anyway, which is fine. It's more hardcore - like trying to complete Metal Gear Solid without being seen once or killing any enemies aside from bosses.
I think I'll enjoy Infinite incredibly. But I already enjoyed the first two game sincredibly - so this will be completely different. Not better, not worse - just different.

A small, spoiler-free excerpt from that IGN review Droo linked...
"Having played BioShock Infinite on all three platforms, I've found that some of the combat system’s inherent versatility and wealth of options are restricted by the gamepad control scheme on the console versions. Oddly, only two weapons and two vigors can be hotkeyed at any given time (via a quick tap of the Xbox’s shoulder buttons or the PS3’s triggers). The rest of your arsenal is accessible, of course, but you must pause and go into a menu in order to get to them. That can break up the fun flow of an otherwise high-octane encounter, and picking the right tool for the job during the fight was something I found myself avoiding. As you might expect, though, this is a non-issue on the PC, where the number keys offer instant access to vigors."
Most other developers would have had identical control options regardless of the platform. This is why I love Irrational's love for us PC gamers. They started on PC and they haven't forgotten that.
Oooooh, and I just remembered about their inclusion of this "1999 mode" - bring it on! :)

Just do as I do: smile, and pretend that your brain isn't going into meltdown. :)
I know the plot deserves all kinds of discussion, but first:
8Wr-PhGC7fw
This was probably my favourite moment in the game.
In the basement of the Graveyard Shift in Shanty Town, the first time you go down there you notice a boy reaching out for an orange and then, when he hears you coming, he scurries under the stairs to hide. There's a guitar leaning against a chair, and you have the option to play it, so Booker sits down and strums a few notes, Elizabeth starts to sing and approaches the boy with an orange. He takes it and the song ends. It was simple and lovely and just made me fall even more in love with these characters.

It was just a little thing but wandering around the city, it felt like there was always something pulling at my attention. Another one I read was how Booker was able to use the Bathysphere, and how that implied there was a genetic link between him and Andrew Ryan. I think people with that theory are confusing their Bathyspheres for their Vita-Chambers, since it was the latter which was limited to Ryan's genetic code. Bathyspheres were only limited to the use of Ryan and his inner circle when rapture was put into lockdown. But with the alternate universes stuff to consider, the possibilities are... infinite!
I'm wondering if anyone had a favourite location. Fort Frolic was the most popular one from Rapture, it seems, and Columbia had no shortage of memorable places, each with their own stand-out moments. And while Columbia was not as darkly ominous as Rapture, it did have its scary bits, and a few moments that gave me a good fright. Comstock House is the chief culprit here for me. When you arrive at Columbia, the first guy you meet tells you you're in "Heaven, friend, or as close as we'll see till Judgement Day." If Columbia is heaven, then Comstock House must be hell. It had a real Silent Hill vibe and the Boys of Silence were downright unnerving. Two moments stick with me here: the first is that bloody head rolling slowly towards you on a wheelchair. That freaked me out so much! And secondly, after you open the gate and turn round to find one of the Boys of Silence standing right behind you. I'm not proud of the sounds that came out of my mouth at that moment.

Omg, that moment. That whole freaking section. The Boys of Silence were sooo creepy. After spending most of the game in fairly well-lit areas, to go into what felt like a section of Rapture put me completely on edge. There was one moment when a wheelchair with a George Washington head rolled, seemingly of its own accord, out into the middle of a room and was so startled by it I almost shot at it.

I did shoot at it. I played that bit at... 2 AM last night. wanted to sleep with the lights on.
In other news: just finished the game. ... Wow.

I really want to go back and play it again, now that I know where I can wander into without risking getting jump-scared (one of my constant fears in any BioShock game :uhoh) but I can't bring myself to load the game up again. Need some time to let it all sink in.

This (http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=533205) is awesome. Not a stone left unturned!
Also, check out the Easter Eggs section in the second post, there is a video from Bioshock, in which poor Kyle Fitzpatrick is playing his piano and there's this eerie sound effect in the background, it sounds alarmingly like Songbird dying. Mind... blown!

Started a new game today and I have to admit that, in knowing what I now know, there are some delightful things I've been noticing:
Anything with the Luteces is just pure gold anyway, but now everything they say has greater depth. I love their dialogue in the beginning ("He doesn't row."), and I loved spotting them through the telescope for the second time, when Robert is juggling and Rosalind is just watching him, and then when you stop looking through the telescope, they're gone. I remember seeing that for the first time and completely dismissing the fact that they'd disappeared, assuming they were just normal residents of Columbia and they'd just gone elsewhere. Then, on your way to the raffle, you pass by the Lutece statue, which is at first a statue of Robert, then as you approach it changes into Rosalind. The first time I played, I noticed the weird tear animation and the sound effect, but I had no idea what had happened, let alone noticed the change in the statue.
And one other thing that I completely failed to notice on my first playthrough was the way in which, when you first step out of the rocket, there's water everywhere - it's all over the floor and flowing down the stairs - surely a cheeky wink to Bioshock fans. What I mean is I didn't fail to notice the water itself, but the significance of it. Also, after noticing this, I then went to my baptism only to have the Preacher greet me with the words: "Is it someone new?"
How did I miss that!? My immediate response: :eee

I finally finished Bioshock 2 and decided to jump straight into Infinite and I have to say I haven't been impressed yet. I haven't gotten very far. I'm just about to get the Shock Jockey, but the ride so far has not been what I expected. The story is solid, but the gameplay has felt lackluster in comparison to what I just transitioned from in Bioshock 2. The pacing is also absolutely terrible. I feel the game would be more enjoyable if I didn't search every corner of every zone for goodies and unique interactions with the NPCs, because otherwise the formula is combat scene, story scene, and extensive amounts of looting. Rinse and repeat. Combat has hardly been anything I could call challenging either. I rarely break my shield and typically just pick off enemies with headshots with the carbine.
I assume everything gets better as it goes. The highlight of the game is the Booker and Liz interactions. The little comments and back and forths between them. I'm finding i can only play the game about one zone at a time before I have to get off and go do something else. The lack of a save anywhere feature is extremely frustrating. I quite often have to jump off in the middle of a play session and lose a lot of progress. Relooting a chunk of the city is not fun.
So at this point I'm really only playing the game for Booker and Liz, because they are both really interesting characters.

Almost done with my 1999 playthrough.
I think the hardest part of this for me has been, again, the Handymen. I discovered that a better use of Vigors made the 'Siren' fights a walk in the park, but still always found the Handyman a challenge. A guess maybe because you always tend to fight him in quite an open battle ground and with a bunch of other enemies around him as well.
Amazingly, I seem to have more money this time around then I did the first time. I haven't bought anything from a vending machine yet aside from one or two Vigor upgrades.
Here's hoping that I can beat the finale :ohno

I also found the Handymen to be the only real bottleneck in the game.

Just finished my 1999 play through! Much less challenging overall than I thought, though perhaps that's because I knew what to expect so could often prepare rooms with Vigor traps for maximum effect before the enemies had even arrived.
One thing I noticed at the very end when you're looking out of Rapture, you can see a little sister crying over a dead Big Daddy in one of the tunnels opposite the room you're standing in :(

Fantastic! I always felt Pre-Fall Rapture would make the perfect setting for that type of story. This first DLC doesn't interest me in the same way that the Dunwall City Trials DLC didn't interest me for Dishonored, but I'll snatch up that second one when it's released.
Also, it seems I can't read the words "under the sea" without hearing Sebastian the crab in my head.

I picked up Burial at Sea, and both me and my Brother played it one after the other and had the same conclusion: It's super special awesome, but really short. It's so short the end takes you by surprise. Just when you feel like your getting your bearings and building momentum it ends quite suddenly. When I say short, I mean 1-2 hours of play depending on how hard you push it. I made it last maybe three hours by stopping to listen to the NPCs, each of which have quite a lot of dialogue when you get close to them. It creates an image of Rapture on the cusp of it's fall into depravity that alone is amazing. You get to see sights and names that will take you back into the watery horrors of Bioshock 1 and 2. It was without a doubt one of the greatest Bioshock moments in my opinion.
Other than the shockingly short length of the DLC, there were a few other bumps. A few of the mechanics have been changed away from the original games to fit the Bioshock: Infinite system; like the guns are a bit wonky (burst fire carbine that wastes two bullets after the first headshot kills an enemy), but they also introduced "new" drinkable plasmids to watch the ingested Vigors of Infinite (Which feel out of place considering the very cool arm injection style of the original plasmids). They also bring over a few other Infinite mechanics that won't surprise anyone but will feel out of place in Rapture.
Strangely, the best part of the game is probably the first hour or so, where you have very limited ammo and resources, and forces you to think your fights ahead of time and usually employ stealth kills to avoid taking ludicrous damage. Burial At Sea employs the Infinite combat style of large enemy groups rather than the slow and terrifying trickle of the original Bioshock, so being outgunned is a big deal.
In short, the game is only like two hours long, but I'll be damned if it wasn't the greatest two hours I've ever played. Is it worth purchasing? I'm not sure. I don't even know much it is. I have the season pass, which so far has been a bit of a disappointment as Clash in the Clouds was fun for a day and Burial at Sea was short.

Bioshock Infinite and its DLCs are on sale this weekend on Steam.
I ended up getting Burial at Sea and.. damn but that is a short DLC. It was.. interesting story-wise, and I'm looking forward to seeing what the second episode brings, but so far it's not bringing anything massively new/essential to the Infinite experience for me.

I started it. It's even more stealth based than the last expansion. Lockpicking the doors is it's own minigame now and weapons and ammo seem ever more scarce. You are also extremely weak health wise, at least at the start, so you have to either sneak up and knock out your enemies or kill them quickly. I'm enjoying it, but it is quite difficult and I have to take it in doses.

I started playing Bioshock Infinite last week but I am moving forward really slow these days. One thing that really amazes me is how many times the gameplay is basicly just walking around and scavenging the area. What amazes me even more is the fact that I do not complain about it. Once the action finally starts, I start complaining since the AI is disturbingly last gen. I never really feel suppressed or flanked by the enemy. I am not even sure if the foes are actively looking for cover.
So whenever combat starts I do see it as an inconvenience that is delaying my exploration of Columbia. Bioshock's Columbia does everything right that Rapture made wrong in my eyes as if the developers read my rant about their original game. The city's citizens are colorfull and diverse unlike in Rapture where everyone runs around with a bunny mask and tries to kill you. In Columbia height or the sky so to speak feels like a constant threat since the game tosses you through the air on a regular basis and jumping over gaps or dropping on enemies or making them fall off structures are important gameplay structures. In Rapture water was mostly just a visual gimmick or an amplifier for lightnings every now and then. Nobody ever tried to drown you in Rapture and there was never a sequence where you got carried away by water or where you had to solve a puzzle by diving or flooding areas.
I already started to come up with my own theories about Booker and the Prophet. One of them is that the Prophet is an older version of Booker that tries to stop himself from destroying his racist Disneyland. The Prophet knows way too much about Booker and according to the Voxophones he already knows how this story will end.

Agreed on the combat. Even on 1999 mode, I only ever felt threatened by one enemy (the Handy-man) - the rest of the enemy types were really easy to deal with, once you know which vigors are best used against which enemy.
Columbia is a joy to explore though and some of my favourite time in that game is still your initial arrival into Columbia.. just wandering around and seeing everything.

I am pretty late to this party but the prophet is about to get his ass kicked and I had it with this motherfucking Lady Comstock and her motherfucking zombies. Oh and children that look like George Washington and/or Ben Franklin can kiss my ass. I probably should not have started this game on 1999 with no Dollar Bill machine.
Combat has gotten a lot better in the end and I agree Handymen are a pain in the ass.

OK I am done with it now and it was a really great experience. I also finished the game with all 50 achievements since I did not want to miss a single tape. I used a walkthrough for that.
The sea of doors sequence is a really beautyfull segment at the end. Now I am really tempted to figure out if the DLC adds some more closure to the story.
