Mash this thar right here button (http://www.sw-fans.net/wiki/index.php?title=Main_Page)

I'm not the best person to lead by example, but I've been trying hard lately. Y'all, update at least something on a wiki article every day if you can. If you look at it as a big picture sort of thing, it's daunting, but if you, say, have a big character update in a RP or something, or remember a tidbit, why not jump into the wiki after that and tweak it accordingly? If we all do little things here and there and get into that habit, we'll actually make a nice compendium of Roleplay stuff.

If fellow wiki wizards can also post here and give easy tips/tricks, that might also be awesome. Let's get in the habit!

Oh a question for the admins - http://www.sw-fans.net/wiki/index.php?title=SWFans.Net_Policies_and_Frequently _Asked_Questions - this was changed by Ogre to a redirect to itself like three years ago and I never noticed (gasp I put SO MUCH WORK into that page!). Was this on purpose? Should we revert it back to the version just before all the content was deleted?

EDIT: I figured it out - it was 'moved' to SW-Fans.Net Policies and Frequently Asked Questions. So the one I linked to should be a redirect to the one with the hyphen. ;)

I 'fixed' it, but not sure if it really needed 'fixing' as such - I think you may have simply not had enough text in there to make it scroll as per normal.

I just copied your other text box and then put filler into it and it works. :)

Re-did most of the bio-sheet 'templates' for the wiki, making things bettah! Changed the colors of the Imp and the Rebel ones too, the colors were bothering me. So instead of the pink/red for Imp, its now a proper gray, and instead of the blue that links disappeared into, the Rebels are orange.

I did some work on the WoD biosheets as well, but the infobox for the Immortal characters needs code work, I'll probably work on that today, as well as updating the wiki pages for all my characters.

The orange hurts my eyes. :(

I can appreciate why you wanted to tweak the colour to make the links show up more, but it's a bit of a radical shift. And I dunno. I can understand the mentality behind grey for the Imperials, but it seems a bit... boring, and undistinctive. At least the red was colourful. :(

Lilaena De'Ville
Aug 27th, 2010, 12:09:11 AM

Like I said, the orange is so garish, it hurts my eyes. :rolleyes

Orange matches the Rebel's flight suits. v:)v And Imperials ARE boring and it matches their itchy wool uniforms. ;)

Not every Rebel character is a pilot, and not every Imperial officer is in the Navy. In fact, I think there are more pilot and stormtrooper-type characters in the Empire at the moment; so by your logic, why didn't you do the Imperials black? ;)

I don't use the Rebel and Imperial character templates myself - I stick to the independent one, so all my bios are the same - so frankly I don't really care. But personally, I would've mentioned it beforehand, rather than making a change that effects a load of other people's bios... but not yours, I notice. :mneh

*shrug*

Whatever. Like I say, I don't much care, since I don't use it myself. Someone else just asked me if I knew why it had changed, is all... and I echo their sentiments that "the blue looked nicer".

Edit:

Constructive thought! Rather than grouping templates by faction, why not group them by colour? Instead of Template_Imperial_Members, we could go with Template_Character_Red, Template_Character_Blue, etc... have a varied spectrum of uniformly named templates, to give people the opportunity to pick and choose.

That way, we don't have to worry about what colour matches what faction?

Dasquian Belargic
Aug 27th, 2010, 01:22:25 AM
I would be happier if they were all grey tbh. Easier on the eyes. The orange is... blegh.

Lilaena De'Ville
Aug 27th, 2010, 01:45:38 AM
Its easy enough to change back. And they can all be the same color too, that isn't a problem.

The reason why there are different ones all over the place is that you can't add or take away lines that don't apply to all factions (like padawan or master, or whatever).

If you (the universal you, not someone in particular) want to make a list of one or two 'infoboxes' - one for Force users and one for not? - and their lines of info, then I can work on consolidating everything from the four or so we have now for SW characters to two. The brown and the light blue - Force user and non-Force user?

Apologies for changing the color to one everyone hates. I'm glad someone said something though, instead of just hating it quietly. The color coordination is because makes it easier to see what character is in what faction just by looking at their wiki page, by the way.

As far as me taking it upon myself to change something that affected everyone's bio's... *sigh* I'll never do it again. Really.

Don't be like that, Holly. :(

There's actually if criteria for templates on MediaWiki, so that it will only include a particular variable (ie. a row in a table) if someone includes data for it. I've seen it done a bunch of times... give me the weekend to suss out how to do it, and I shall construct a "one infobox to rule them all" in an assortment of colours, so people can pick and choose what they want.

Lilaena De'Ville
Aug 27th, 2010, 01:58:45 AM
That would be awesome if you could, I haven't been able to get anything like that to work on our wiki, and I have tried (this doesn't mean its impossible, its just beyond me because I am a bear with a very small brain). :(

I think if you manage it, then we should delete all the other extraneous SW infobox templates to avoid confusion. And maybe we can do a WoD super one for those...

As far as me being 'like that'... I have done a lot of work on the wiki and I'd hate for orange to be the reason people start resenting me. :cry

Captain Untouchable
Aug 27th, 2010, 02:03:04 AM
...no one is resenting you, Holly. We just... don't really like the shade of orange? :huh

It's just a wiki. No need to get all upsed about it. :\

Edit:

I don't have delete privilages on the wiki, so I can't delete dud pages, templates, etc. Can you?

Edit 2:

Does anyone know how to give delete privilages? Are they intentionally disabled... or is it disabled because they haven't been turned "on" yet?

Lilaena De'Ville
Aug 27th, 2010, 02:21:29 AM
I think the admins can delete pages. I know I used to be able to and now I can't.

Captain Untouchable
Aug 27th, 2010, 02:40:54 AM
In that case, a Delete category might be a good idea. If a page needs deleting, you clear it down and link it to that category... an Admin can then see what's on the list, and work their way through.

I'm making some headway with this infobox doodad - I can get it to do all of the things that I want it to do so far, which is groovy.

However, because I'm never satisfied with just doing what needs to be done, I did think of a way of making it so that we only need one template page, for all colours... I can basically put in two fields for "color1" and "color2": you whack in the hexcode for the two colours you want, and it fills in the blanks everywhere else.

Would that be too complicated? Would you prefer separate pages with standard colours (an "orange" template, a "red" template, etc)? Do you want me to try and code it so that you can type "red", "orange", "blue" etc into a single colour field, and have it allocate hex codes from a preset list?

Am I still using proper words? I've been staring at code so long that I've forgotten how to read. >_<

Individual pages about parts of the fleet should be in a category, that doesn't mean they can't also be linked to on a page like you started, Kraken.

Every page should be in a category.

And Jace, I like this:

I can basically put in two fields for "color1" and "color2": you whack in the hexcode for the two colours you want, and it fills in the blanks everywhere else.

Not too complicated and then people can make them whatever color they please.

That's easy enough to do, then. I'll make sure the template page lists some common colours.

Right!

There are still a few kinks that needs working out (it's kinky :smokin), but for the most part, Template:Infobox (http://www.sw-fans.net/wiki/index.php?title=Template:Infobox) should be working.

The process to use it is pretty simple: it's a delete as appropriate format. In order to make the formatting work, you have to fill in the Name, Spouse, and Affiliation/Faction fields... and everyone has a Mother and Father (and if you don't, it's significant), so those fields will always show up. Everything else you can use or not use as the mood takes you.

Just to give you some examples: the bios for Vansen Tyree (http://www.sw-fans.net/wiki/index.php?title=Vansen_Tyree), Alexander Tur'enne (http://www.sw-fans.net/wiki/index.php?title=Alexander_Tur'enne), Chir'daki (http://www.sw-fans.net/wiki/index.php?title=Chir'daki), Nen Lev'i (http://www.sw-fans.net/wiki/index.php?title=Nen Lev'i), and J'onn Scarlet (http://www.sw-fans.net/wiki/index.php?title=J'onn Scarlet) are all using the new infobox, and as you can see they're all making use of different styles, lengths, fields, and what-not, as is suitable for their characters. For demo purposes, I've flipped Jaden Luka (http://www.sw-fans.net/wiki/index.php?title=Jaden_Luka) over to a similar format, just to show some of the other fields being used.

Some notes: if you do not designate a color1 and color2, it will default to the tan/beige colour that you can see on my bios. If you would like to tweak the colours, this (http://www.2createawebsite.com/build/hex-colors.html) website is a pretty useful tool: not only can you find the exact hex code for the shade that you want, but you can also get it to suggest (with the spinny wheel at the bottom) a good complimentry colour; the second (slightly darker) colour is a good call for Color2.

I'm sure there will be hiccups: let me know as and when they crop up, and I'll try and sort them. :)

I would ask / suggest that people don't directly jiggle around with the Infobox itself, though: don't forget, any changes you make to it are going to affect every page using the infobox, so what seems like a "fix" for your bio might mess up someone else's, etc. :uhoh

OKAY so I may or may not have clogged up the wiki with unneeded and unwanted pages (I tried to move them to the delete category so there's that at least) but I have created a California Registry 'card' that you can put on your mutant's profile page if they are registered.

This is something you will have to copy/paste over and then change the information inside of it to fit, it is NOT a template in the true wiki sense of the word. If that sentence makes no sense, don't worry about it.

See http://www.sw-fans.net/wiki/index.php?title=Creep for inclusion. You will have to click EDIT to view the code, then copy it, then go BACK (don't save any changes on this page that will screw up Aimee's page) and then go to your page and edit and paste. Hope that makes sense.

edit: and add [[Category:Registered Mutants]] to the bottom of the page, too.

I'm stuck in one place with my foot all bandaged up at the moment, so I've been working on some Star Wars pages last night and today.

My intention is to make sure that the pages connected with our more active roleplay groups are as up to date as I can possibly make them, and I'm trying to ensure they're in the same style / format for the sake of neatness / consistancy / ease of navigation.

The Wheel (http://www.sw-fans.net/wiki/index.php?title=The_Wheel) and the Novgorod (http://www.sw-fans.net/wiki/index.php?title=The_Wheel) have pages. In there I've included a list of characters that are a) permenant fixtures of the setting, and b) either active in threads, or owned by players who are active in threads. The Novgorod will be getting a history section once I've re-familiarised myself enough with that triumphant thread of Christin and Charley's to write a summary.

There are also up-to-date pages for the Challenger (http://www.sw-fans.net/wiki/index.php?title=The_Wheel) and Rogue Group (http://www.sw-fans.net/wiki/index.php?title=The_Wheel), as well as information on the Challenger Air Group (http://www.sw-fans.net/wiki/index.php?title=The_Wheel) (Wheel pilots who are not Rogues).

I'll be adding more over the coming days - information about Cirr's boss and his flotilla, and about the Imperials the planets from The Vanguards... that sort of stuff - and also quotes (!) on some of those pages, so please let me know if you can think of any good / appropriate ones! :uhoh

This way it's easier for someone to read through the entries and not be bogged down my rabbit holes and unnecessary details. Also, I'm retconning a lot of little details because I was apparently not thinking very hard when I originally made a lot of these entries.

My brain is goo.

*looks at account* Yep, this is the appropriate account to be signed in as :lol

Clicking "random page" until you find something to fix/do is kind of fun. Also I've been adding more planets and trying to add a SW-Fans section to existing planet wiki pages with relevant RPs and characters.

I have been adding in planetary information, trying to start with planets that are involved in current RPs.

So Vanguards people should check out the Gordian Reach wiki page to see where it is that the ssi'ruuk are invading. Charley, I am really really glad that even though you tried to make up "Gordian" as a section of space that you failed and it's a real place. We should use real places. :D

So, hooray!

Yeah, let's pick canon planets and cause the mass genoside of their entire population so no one can ever use the planet again!

Cho could definitely use a planet that's been recently depopulated.

Oh, why?

No reason. :mischief

Conversely, we should never do anything that hurts a canon planet even if its one no one ever heard of before?

So no razing or glassing planets?

May 25th, 2012, 05:04:41 PM
I say go for it, just ask first. :p

The ones everyone's heard of like Coruscant and Corellia and others like that would be off limits I'd think but other, obscure planets? ... I mean it shouldn't be an event we're just doing willy-nilly. A planet ending event is a major RP thing and would be treated as such I would think.

Ummm, too late for a couple of dozen minor planets at least, for my Imp character.

lol no sun crushers at all!

Park Kraken
May 25th, 2012, 09:42:37 PM
Don't know if you meant Sun Crusher or the Centerpoint Station, but even if it was allowed, you'd need the planetary repulsors, and at this point in time no one even had an inkling of their existance.

We have a 'no super weapons' rule so I meant no sun crushers. No death stars.

I'm just explaining one of the many reasons you might choose to make up a new planet.

EU authors create new planets all the time. Sometimes you want a one-shot disposable planet. Sometimes you want one with a particular appearence or environment. Sometimes there just isn't a good fit.

There's no harm in creating new planets if you need to; or hell, even if you want to. If you don't want to do that, no one is making you: but please don't whinge and criticise at those of us who don't share your particular opinion on this issue.

I was not whining or criticising, so I think I'm good then. :)

edit: Also I re-read this

Conversely, we should never do anything that hurts a canon planet even if its one no one ever heard of before?
And I'm pretty sure it makes no sense/doesn't make any sort of point because I think I was just restating what you said originally but put 'conversely' at the front which is ridiculous. :lol So, sorry about that, :lol, I am nonsensical.
