View Full Version : One Small Step...

Piro

Upon first meeting the creature known only as Piro, 99% of the galactic population have this to say: “Hello? Ah… is, ah, anyone there?”

Usually a matter of moments will pass, in which the individual will appear confused. This lasts for no more than a minute, after which they will give up and turn their attention elsewhere. The remaining 1% of the population, however, frowns and hesitates as they wonder what exactly is making that odd squeaking noise. On further inspection they realize that – ah ha! –Piro is standing right there in front of them!

You would be forgiven for failing to notice him at first. After all, he’s small enough to fit in the palm of your hand. Only a foot high and weighing little more than a bag of sugar, Piro often goes unnoticed. This can have unfortunate consequences, such as the time he was mistaken for a common household pet and subsequently caged for a number of months by a small Rodian girl, only escaping after masterminding a plan involving a shoelace, a frying pan, and an over-ripe namana fruit. If you were, however, to pay close attention to Piro, you would see a tiny, sleek mouse with bright eyes and a huge ears. Suffice to say, he is a peculiar thing.

Piro comes from a rather large family. He has 37 siblings – 16 brothers, 20 sisters, and 1 sibling of unidentified gender. Members of Piro’s species leave their parents at a very young age, in search of treasure to hoard (and more importantly, eat) and often travel to live on worlds far and wide. There are in fact so many of Piro’s relatives, that you are likely to find one on most every inhabitable world, if you look closely at your local garbage heap. For that is what Piro is – one of the so-calle garbage rats of Tatooine. Piro does not know exactly who all of his family are, or where all of them can be found – though since he has never known what it feels like to be part of a family, he doesn’t mind this at all.

In recent times, Piro has learned of the Jedi Order. After spending many years moving from planet to planet, usually hidden away in an unsuspecting traveler’s bag, he has finally made it to Mon Calamari. This is only first step on his long journey, however. Piro does not know how to find the Jedi, or if they will help him – perhaps he is simply too small? Whatever the case, he has far to go. Only time will tell what will become of young Piro.

Being only little more than a foot tall, Piro often found traveling difficult. Many people did not notice Piro, or thought him nothing more than a friendly critter. It certainly made interstellar travel difficult. All his strength was needed just to carry the credit chit needed to pay for his flights!

Eventually, Piro had decided that drastic action was needed. If he was ever going to find the Jedi Order, then he would have to employ stealth and cunning! Piro soon found that there were many ways for a being as small as he to travel, whether it was hidden within the shaggy fur of a beast, or stowed away in the luggage of an unsuspecting traveler. Unfortunately, things were not always that easy. Life for Piro was akin to rolling a chance cube. Sometimes he got to where he wanted to go, and others… well, suffice to say it had taken a good many years for him to arrive on Mon Calamari.

At last, though, he was here! Yet, Piro could not help feel somewhat disheartened. Ahead, a set of stairs loomed ominously. He scrambled helplessly at the first step, though upon reaching the second, found himself exhausted. Rain drops bounced against his cap and weighed down his whiskers. With a sigh, he sat down. Hopefully, no one would step on him before he managed to catch the attention of a passing, friendly stranger.

"Damn rrajin, agajin?"

Rather than fool with an umbrella again (and have it blown out of his grasp by a guster), Cirr endured for a bit as he tended to sorting out his rucksack on the skids of his shuttle, the Black Cat. Why couldn't he have taken Layla all the way to Dac? This wasn't just a trip to the other sector. It had taken him half a day at light speed to get here. In the end, it was worth it to get the components necessary to boost Layla's sensor clarity. Sanis wouldn't be hapy trying to fuss out the differences between Mon Cal engineering, Verpine engineering, Corellian engineering, and everything else that they had wired up hodge-podge in their systems, but Cirr had a hot tip from Master Chief Kochanski that this was a "while supplies last" sort of gig.

So here he was, tired, wet, and more or less just ready to be done and back on the ship. Dac was just too much ocean for a guy like him, and he had a feeling that every time he met a Mon Calimari, the pescatoids were mean-mugging him. To their defense, it did get a little distracting working alongside comrades that smell like a big batch of delicious home cooking at all times.

Headed inside to go find the contact that Kochanski had pointed him to, he sat his rucksack down at the stairs beneath an awning near the doorway, it's zipper only about halfway closed. In relative dryness, he decided to light up a stim. Normally it wasn't his thing, but he'd been cooped up for too long, and he'd make an exception.

Just in the nick of time, Piro scrabbles out of the way of the huge rucksack. Huffing and puffing, he flops down on the edge of a step and waits for the fluttering of his tiny heart to slow. When it has, he peeks around the satchel at a pair of equally huge feet, which are tapping a lazy beat on the damp duracrete. He shuffles closer to the rucksack, until he can see the legs attached to the feet and in a very small voice, he speaks.

"Greetings, friend!"

Cirr's ears immediately flipped forward to triangulate the voice, but he didn't see anyone. Was he hearing things?

He moved to lean against the hand-guard at the stairs, figuring that he'd just heard the wind blowing against something.

With quick steps, Piro skirts by the rucksack. He has traveled the Galaxy and fears no rain or wind, though the storm is most certainly strong enough to lift him from his feet. He wrinkles his nose and twitches his whiskers, shaking away a particularly large rain drop as he waves at the shape which is over-shadowing him.

“Hello, up there!”

"Huh?"

Cirr looked down, his ears cocking at uneven angles to reflect his shock at finding the source of the voice at last. Normally when confronted with creatures about this size, the Cizerack has a more or less one-sided epicurean interaction with them, ie, chows down on them in the span of a minute. Of course, if little bite sized creatures talk to you, then, it's a little more complicated. Sharing his mama's conventions on forrda, it's probably bad jaa-jaa to eat a sentient.

Still, not wanting to look like a complete moron stooping down to talk at a, ahem, talking mouse, Cirr opted to bring the little guy up to his level, hoisting the creature up by a big hand to his height.

Remembering to ash his stim, he exhaled away from the little guy, still as confused as ever.

"Uh, yeah?"
