There is so much I could say on this subject matter, and that I couldn't say. But suffice to say none-the-less, there is a growing trend of people vocally going against the American military. Whether these people are giving aid and comfort to the enemy in doing so, or just expressing their opinions as outlined under the Freedom of Speech, it is still an issue worth discussion. So, let's start it here, with a Poll.

I don't have much of an opinion of them either way to be honest.

Growing up in a family where members have always served in the military, I will comment.
*puts away his soapbox*
If someone is going out there, every day and putting their live on the line to preserve freedom and equality in the world, and knowingly could die any day and they still decide to do it. They should be respected, admired, congratulated and thanked EVEN IF YOU DO NOT AGREE WITH THE WAR THEY ARE IN!

Our military hasn't fought an existential conflict in two generations, and is now used as an instrument of American coercion in far-flung foreign wars. I think they would certainly fight to keep Americans safe if the necessity arose, but we're deluding ourselves to think that's what they've been doing of late

It's something of an unwieldly topic because are we talking about the American military as in the men and women who serve your country in the armed forces or are we talking about the wars in which they are engaged? I wouldn't say the latter as that is simply a by-product of the political engine behind the machine.

Good point.
When it comes to WW1, WW2 and the cold war my opinion is that they did a great job securing world peace especially since they kicked Hitler's ass.
On other conflicts I am undecided!

No they should not. Not when they are used to murder millions.
Get the stupid blinders off your eyes to the absolute death and carnage your fucking country has caused over the last 200 years all over the globe. Being good guys in WWII doesnt give a moments excuse for Iraq, Vietnam, Africa, any number of wars in Sth America etc etc etc.
Afghanistan might have begun as vaguely justified but it sure as fuck aint now. Right now they are nothing more than a bunch of civilian killing thugs.

The best way to respect the men and women whom chose to serve their country in the armed forces is not send them off to die in unjustifiable wars, and to fight like hell to bring them home when they are.
There are good people who serve in the US military who are doing horrible things because of the corrupt bureaucracy handing down the orders. I respect that they have chosen to serve their country, but I don't respect what they are being made to do in that role. And that love/hate dichotomy that many US citizens feel regarding our armed forces is enough to make one sick.

Probably no Americans will say that they are "What Hitler aspired to create in the 3rd Reich!" or that thing about the Galactic Empire, an organization which conquers planets and then blows them up if they get uppity. The US military is one government-funded thing that has a 94% approval rating.
And yeah, we need to respect our fighting men and women by bringing the vast majority of them home, doubling their benefits, and helping them to find jobs. We spend 58% of our tax revenues on this bloated military, and it needs to stop, because we're broke and the money could be put to better use elsewhere. The US Navy, for instance, is so vast and mighty that were all the other navies of the world to amass in a fleet against it, the US Navy would outgun them by 4 or 5 to 1. Bring the troops home, release them into the reserves or something, keep several thousand crack special forces dudes in Afghanistan, along with tens of thousands of new, smaller gun-toting drones that cost $1 million to produce, and give them a clear mission: hunt al qaeda. Back in the US, focus on territorial defense with our new, much reduced in size army.
Spend the money on any of the other dozen things that urgently need cash. We could use a national fiber infrastructure, or a high-speed rail system, or we could tear down all those coal power plants and replace them with nuclear plants, or a universal college education program. Something that creates jobs.

You know dude, years ago I would never have said you post the best political points - you pretty much pissed me off and got me angry but you have changed. A lot.
I actually admire the stances you take now and you post a lot of damn good sensible stuff. That gives me a lot of hope more can be like you and you sir are a credit to the USA.
Compliments are a rare thing from me mate so well done :)
