Hey I'm either looking to join an existing squadron or start a new one.

I'm leaning either towards a Defender or a Scimitar Assault Bomber.

At first I was going to go with something cool like Lazer, or Blazer or Tazer, but I think I will go with something funny and self deprecating like

Oh, I'd definitely advise against going with something generically "cool." Those sorts of callsigns don't have as much personality unless there's something that solidly connects it to your character.

You said in your bio he swears a blue streak whenever he's in the cockpit... Shitstorm? Or to use a less offensive sci-fi expletive, Drenstorm?

Could always go with one that's currently being used by an NPC: Frack.

We can go with Decoy (Bette here, btw) and say you got it because once you lost your engines during a simulation when you were a cadet and sat there like a sitting duck whilst your squadmates saved yer butt.

I like that idea. How about this...

In a training exercise, the other cadets turned off his weapons so all he could do during the battle exercise was fly around annoy the other fliers. He ended up with a score of 0 for the mission and they called him Decoy from then on.
