View Full Version : We want more pilots!

Jul 11th, 2010, 01:04:40 PM
In response to this (http://www.sw-fans.net/forum/showthread.php?t=20526) thread, The Wheel is getting a couple more Rebel ships, and a couple more Squadrons to help protect the Jedi, alongside Rogue Squadron. We're looking for people who want to come hang with the cool kids, and bring some of those other units to life.

In the words of Starship Troopers: "Would you like to know more?"

If so, have a quick skim of the FAQ style info in the next post, or throw up a post below. This really is a the more the merrier situation, so get your sexy flight-suited asses over here and volunteer. :mneh

Of particular note is a potential vacancy in Rogue Squadron (Rogue Six), as well as numerous spaces in Thunderbolt Squadron: an equally elite but A-Wing based unit. Ask away below, grab me on IM, or fire a PM in my direction if you want more info, et al. :)

How is this going to work?

The Wheel is gaining extra escorts in the form of the Challenger (http://www.sw-fans.net/wiki/index.php?title=Challenger), which is one of those cool-looking Star Destroyers from the Clone Wars. All (well, most) of the fighters will be based aboard that ship.

Depending on what type of ship you want to fly, what kind of pilot you want to be, and so forth, you'll end up in an appropriate squadron. However, because all of those squadrons are on the same ship, and are doing the same job, we will all be fighting and flying alongside each other; and of course, living and drinking alongside each other, too. ;)

At the end of the day, regardless of the name of the squadron you're in, we're all part of the same Air Group; which unit is just a minor detail.

What squadrons are getting added?

As it stands, the Challenger has four new squadrons: however, the inside is absolutely cavernous, so if what you're looking for isn't here, comment below and we can easily add something in. :)

Viper Squadron and Prowler Squadron
These are our A-Wing units. A-Wings are fast and agile, and are designed as interceptors for fighter-to-fighter combat. You might be flying the CAP (Combat Air Patrol); or you might be an alert fighter waiting to launch at a moment's notice. If you are a former TIE Fighter pilot, you're probably used to speed and agility, so one of these units might be a perfect fit for you.

Thunderbolt Squadron
You know how when Rogue Squadron was called "Red Squadron" when it fought the Death Stars? The Thunderbolts were called "Green Squadron", and at Endor they flew A-Wings; like Rogue Squadron, they're an "elite" unit. They now fly the A-Wing II (http://www.sw-fans.net/wiki/index.php?title=RZ-2_A-Wing_Interceptor), which is the A-Wing's slightly less nimble but slightly more beefy cousin.

Raptor Squadron
Another X-Wing squadron, to partner with the Rogues. In addition to twelve standard X-Wings, the squadron also boasts a number of Recon-X (http://starwars.wikia.com/wiki/T-65BR_X-wing_reconnaissance_starfighter) fighters, which are used as scouts, and to rendezvous with and escort any new ships that want to join the Wheel.

What about Valkyrie Squadron?

Those of you currently familiar with the Wheel may know that we also have a Valkyrie Squadron of A-Wing IIs. Unlike Rogue Squadron, they will not get transferred to the Challenger. Instead, they will remain aboard the Valiant (http://www.sw-fans.net/wiki/index.php?title=Valiant); we'll be using the Valiant as a scout, or to transfer pilots from the Wheel to elsewhere (rather than launching straight from the Wheel; to help hide it's location).

Can I have a wingman?

Some people like to have another player as their wingman who they can bounce off and interact with. Others prefer to have an NPC, so they can post the activites of both planes within the same post. Provided there is enough space, either is fine. :)

Who is in charge?

That is a question with multiple answers. The Challenger itself is commanded by Commodore Vansen Tyree, and his XO, Colonel Conrad Pressly. They're in overall command. However, the fighters - as an Air Group - will be commanded by Kelly Perris.

If you've seen Battlestar Galactica, Kelly will be our Apollo. He will fly, particularly in big battles when we need to scramble every fighter we can. However, because he will have oversight over four/five other squadrons as well, Jaden Luka will be looking after the day-to-day leading of Rogue Squadron. Kelly Perris will retain the Rogue Leader callsign, while Jaden Luka will fly as Rogue One.

Can I be a Squadron Leader or Flight Leader?

The emphasis here is on the characters, so if your pilot is a natural leader, then it makes sense for them to have a leadership role. There is obviously a finite number of each, but we'll try and accomodate you as best we can.

Don't forget though, there's more to leadership than bossing people around; you may well be expected to take part in meeting and briefing threads, and act in a (reasonably) responsible way; and you'll need to make sure you earn and maintain the respect of your fellow pilots.

What is a Flight Leader?

In the Rebel Alliance, each Squadron is generally broken down into flights, which are (usually) made of four fighters, who have sequential callsigns - Rogue One, Two, Three, and Four; Rogue Five, Six, Seven, and Eight; and so on.

One of those pilots will be in charge, and will relay instructions (if necessary). Usually, it's the first one (One, Five, Nine, Thirteen, etc), but that isn't necessarily always the case.

Why does what Flight I'm in matter?

Most of the time, it won't. Most of the time, it'll just be you and your wingman, mixed up in a swirling mass of fighters.

Sometimes however, the people in charge will need to give specific instructions to multiple fighters quickly. The easiest way to do that - rather than name every fighter individually - is to just instruct an entire flight to go. For example, if there is a formation of fighters closing in on the Whaledon, it is much easier for someone to order Two Flight and Three Flight from Rogue Squadron to intercept, as opposed to naming eight separate fighters / pilots individually.

In addition, Flights will usually be on standby together, flying the CAPs together, and so forth: so you'll get to know your Flight-mates quite well.

These sophomoric displays of machismo serve only to weaken individual focus and discipline, to say nothing of your carnal extracurricular activities. Such boorish behavior would never be tolerated in an Imperial unit.

Except Shadow Squadron, apparently. :grumble

Kelly Perris
Jul 11th, 2010, 02:34:19 PM
Mr. V'larr.... if you do recall, the Shadows are such a revered squadron within the Empire because such 'boorish behaviour' is good for morale - which contributes to overall performance. A happy squadron is a deadly squadron.

What I'm saying here is that it would do you a favour to keep your prudish, stuck up, brown-nosing opinions to yourself.

We're going to frag you, anyway. ;)

And to think; Command thinks that a disgraceful bunch of frakwit wasters like you Rogues actually deserve to serve on my ship.

Much as I am loathe to admit it, I must agree with my cousin's assessment. Some level of frivolity is to be expected from emotional beings during their hours of recreation, but surely the finest pilots in the Rebel Alliance must be held to a higher standard. I only hope my influence on my comrades will prove to be for the better.

I personally hope that these pilots will be going OUT on missions, and that we won't fall into the pitfall of having the Wheel get attacked on a regular basis. The whole point of it is that it's supposed to be extremely hard to find.

The current Rogue Squadron mission establishes a precedent for exactly that, and we'll be expanding on that idea further - exactly how depends on how many pilots we get, in how many different squadrons.

Don't forget though, the Wheel is gradually increasing in size, and certain furry Jedi in particular keep talking about going on missions, obtaining ships, and so forth. ;) It's an unfortunate truth, but we will get stumbled upon from time to time, be it by pirates, accident, or by people actively looking for us.

The advantage of an increased Rebel presence is that when it happens, the Jedi can just jump away, while we hold them at bay: if it does happen, it won't cause as much Wheel-wide panic, because we'll be prepared for it.

Jul 11th, 2010, 09:16:25 PM
While Kylie is in Rogue Squadron, she doesn't mind being a Flight Leader or commanding another squadron... whatever is needed.

Also, are there any noted Bomber Squadrons?

Aris V'larr
Jul 11th, 2010, 09:20:26 PM
Aris will likely be arriving with Thunderbolt squadron as a flight leader. The position of squad leader is still open, but just be aware that you'll have to contend with a stat-quoting odds-calculating stick-up-the-arse know-it-all. :)

EDIT: I was wondering about bomber squadrons as well. I suppose since the Wheel isn't a battle group, it doesn't really need that kind of striking power. Superiority fighters and interceptors have clear defensive roles; bombers would only be any good if we have an ISD barreling down on us, and we're probably running from that anyway.

Otherwise I expect the Rogues and Thunderbolts to be attacking targets of opportunity as deemed suitable by the skipper of the Valiant?

Kelly Perris
Jul 11th, 2010, 09:33:37 PM
Nein. The Challenger, Miss V'larr, as is where we are stationed. Commodore Tyree runs the whole show from the Challenger, whereas the Valiant is commanded by Major Leela Vorega and only has one squadron, the Valkyries, attached.

All this is quite clearly stated in the FAQ post. :)

Aris V'larr
Jul 11th, 2010, 09:40:00 PM
Yes, but I had the idea that the Valiant was the Wheel flagship and, hence, the command ship for the group. So now I know the flag is transferring along with the Rogues. :)

In fairness, the Valiant is commanded by Colonel Leela Vorega. And also, the FAQ mentions that we might have the Rogues and others ship out on the Valiant in order to run missions away from the rest of the Wheel, so the statement isn't entirely incorrect. ;)

I was wondering about bomber squadrons as well. I suppose since the Wheel isn't a battle group, it doesn't really need that kind of striking power. Superiority fighters and interceptors have clear defensive roles; bombers would only be any good if we have an ISD barreling down on us, and we're probably running from that anyway.

That was my thinking as well. In addition, the principle bomber - the Y-Wing - is somewhat outdated now. If we were looking to add an additional anti-starship element, I'd think that the B-Wing is probably a more logical route to follow, since they're designed for that sort of role.

As an aside, a suggestion was made that I add another "normal" X-Wing Squadron. Why, I hear you ask? Well, three Squadrons make a Wing; thus, we already have an A-Wing Wing. Adding an extra X-Wing Squadron would give us an X-Wing Wing as well, which would be all pretty and symmetrical and so forth.

Any protests, or does that sound reasonable enough?

Kelly Perris
Jul 11th, 2010, 10:58:42 PM
Sounds good to me. I tend not to protest against things that make sense. :lol

Jaden Luka
Jul 12th, 2010, 04:57:38 PM
Right. Updates ahoy!

We've now filled the Flight Leader spot in the Rogues, and one of our pilot vacancies, so I'll go back and edit the first post accordingly. I'll also put up a full list of all the pilots we have so far, just for reference. :)

We've got a pilot in an elite A-Wing Squadron now, so if anyone wants to go down that route, they are more than welcome to hop on board with that.

The plan at the moment is that, once the "A Reputation to Maintain" thread is finished, we'll do a big making everything come to pass thread. In the mean time, as before, the more the merrier - and keep the suggestions, thoughts, questions, and all that jazz coming! :)

Greetings, Miss Valar. At the risk of confusing the CAG with our last names, I hope you will consider Thunderbolt Squadron as an alternative to the boorish reception you are sure to receive with the Rogues. The A-Wing is, of course, the first choice of the technical expert, whereas X-Wings appear to attract a different caliber of pilot. Specifically, the kind that requires quad lasers and a phallic fuselage to compensate for their own perceived inadequacies.

Jaden and I agree that it would be cool for the Rogues and Thunderbolts to have distinctly different personalities as befits their different hardware. The X-Wing is a flashy, powerful bruiser, while the A-Wing 2 is a precision instrument and the peak of available technology.

We all know what the Rogues' attitude is: boisterous, fun-loving, high on ego, quick on the draw, all too eager to jump into a pissing contest. By contrast, the Bolts are hot stuff and know it. They pride themselves on technical skill, clean flying, and perfectly-tuned hardware. They're more apt to keep personal lives distinct from their professional lives, and their military discipline is exemplary. They're not above some illicit R&R, but they'd be more apt to hit the club than the row of seedy bars in the red light district. They're also not above a little thoroughbred snobbery.

In short, the Rogues are the jocks, the Bolts are the preps. I expect plenty of sniping between the two. :)

Well I can't deny that but had they put me on your case I assure you, you would be six feet under and be pissing on your head stone. As for partner well I would do about the same maybe have a little fun with her first. Yet like you my department is shoddy they only gave your files to those who couldn't hack it when they should have given it to me.

As grieved as I am to interrupt such witty repartee... :rolleyes

Given how much time we spend interacting out of missions, I think this is a grand idea: it'll help spice things up by throwing in some personality divides, clashes, and all sorts. By association, there may be a "bleed off" effect into the other squadrons: since the X-Wing units would aspire to be Rogue Squadron, they might try to mimic the Rogues, and so forth.

That's not to say that you have to conform to your Squadron stereotype, of course. Just citing a couple of examples: Oisin Ocasta is a bit of a nerd, and Iota Valar is quite timid and shy; not classic "jock" personas, which of course adds extra diversity for interactions within the squadrons, as well as between the squadrons.

I often forget that my very existance so sickens you and the rest of our family so much that you left my mother and I to be raped and tortured by Imperial troops. No one so much as lifted a finger to help...not even when they slit my mother's throat when they tired of her.

You honor them by serving the bastards that got them killed? I mean if it wasn't for the rebels the Alderaan incident wouldn't have had to happen. Blame the insurrectionist for the extreme measures not the authority who was forced to use it. Insurrectionist stole military secrets and forced the Imperials hand. Quit your crying allot of good loyal men died because of the insurrectionist and what they stole. There terrorist and now you are one of them, way to preserve what you say your family stood for.
