The way this is flying all over Twitter, I'd be surprised if most people here haven't seen it already - but if you haven't: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9_MqZn7E-mk

Um, is this real? It looks like more or less a really well funded fanfic

I posted (http://www.sw-fans.net/forum/showpost.php?p=338711&postcount=54)earlier in the Gaming news section a link to Kotaku (http://ca.kotaku.com/5558339/if-this-is-the-next-mortal-kombat-movie-sign-us-up)which mentions it. It looks like no one is sure exactly what this is yet. It might be a reboot as the article mentions Warner bros was looking to do just that. If that is the case it'll probably be a straight to DVD from the look of it.
The other theory was that its a trailer/teaser for a new Mortal Kombat game. Which is aiming at a M+ rating which the last previous incarnations lacked.

Update: Actress Jeri Ryan, the actress portraying Sonya Blade in the video, has confirmed (http://kotaku.com/5558850/that-mortal-kombat-trailer-jeri-ryan-explains) via Twitter that this is a short film created by a director to sell Warner Bros. on his Mortal Kombat pitch. "It's not a game trailer. Actually was made for the director to sell WB on his vision for a reimagined MK film," Ryan says on her Twitter page (http://twitter.com/JeriLRyan), adding " I did it as a favor to a friend. No idea yet what WB's reaction to it was." Thanks to Zimnick for pointing us towards Jeri's updates!

The most shocking thing about this news certainly is that if Jeri Ryan owes you a favour you shouldn't use it for something like this ;)
OK J/K I think this is some nice viral marketing for this project because it shows a lot of potential when it comes to mood and atmosphere. Turning Scorpion into one of the main protagonists sounds like an intresting idea since characters like Johny Cage belong into the late 80s or early 90s.

After seeing that footage, how could they not wish to reboot the film franchise? I think the buzz this generates will generate a buzz amongst the WB executives, and their fat pockets.

I'd actually like to see this made into a new movie.
The concept that they are obviously portraying is way more interesting to me then the whole dimensional war thing from the first two movies.
But maybe it's just me wondering how they would re-imagine some of the other characters as more humans with special weapons or deformities vs. mystical powers.

I hope they do have powers and special abilities. Otherwise, why use the name? Just call it Freaks Fight!

Oh I'm not saying don't give them powers and abilities, but I more mean in a science/tech manner vs. magic.
For example.
Raiden rather then being a god and being able to shoot lightning, is a guy that's an egomaniac and thinks he's a god, and has some tech that shoots out bursts of electricity.

The main nerdy appeal for me, about the trailer, was trying to guess who was who - so I hope that they do put a 'Dark Knight' twist on a lot of the characters, even if they are only playing minor roles.

Yup you can see Sub Zero for a few frames if you pause the video when Scorpion is looking at the Sub Zero file. Well at least he looks like he has got a freezing super power :)

Check it out (http://kotaku.com/5560010/the-new-mortal-kombat-trailer-is-pure-brutality). Funny how this came out just around the same time the demo trailer did. New MK game more to how the fans remembered. Gory, No silly 3d Swivel camera, and messy fatalities. yay

Looks like this will be webisodes, not a movie.

Mortal Kombat Legacy - Episode 1 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6s6UiEuCYXA)
Three episodes are out at the moment. I have to thank Droo for linking me to them in the first place.
Raiden rather then being a god and being able to shoot lightning, is a guy that's an egomaniac and thinks he's a god, and has some tech that shoots out bursts of electricity.
I hope he is a God and controls lightning since that's who Raiden is. I don't see the point in making a Mortal Kombat movie and changing what the characters are. Sub-Zero didn't have a freeze-gun, he shot ice from his palm. If Sub-Zero can't do that in this, then it fails. It's not Sub-Zero unless it's ice from the palm. If he has an ice-gun then he's Ninjitsu-Mr-Freeze and that would be wank.
PoV aside, I think the webisodes look superb so far! Nice hint of Sektor/Cyrax in the first episode :)

I hope he is a God...
He's Ryan Robbins. That's better than a god. :ohno
In all seriousness though, I wouldn't judge too harshly. This isn't that different from the kind of trepedation people had about Starbuck and Boomer being women in the new Battlestar (or Boomer secretly being a robot), and that kinda worked out okay... :uhoh
As long as he's still Raiden at his core, does it really matter if he's godly or tech based?
Edit:
Seven of Nine! Helo! :eee

New Mortal Kombat movie in the pipeline, slated for a 2013 release, and apparently they've asked Kevin Tancharoen, the man behind the Mortal Kombat: Legacy webisodes and the viral Mortal Kombat: Rebirth video, to direct it. Happy days!
