View Full Version : Your most emotional Moment in a Video Game

Well I had this discussion lately about if we do really care for video game npcs like we do care for characters in movies and books. The truth is in most video games your side kicks do more annoy you (run into walls, get stuck, can't hit anything) than add extra exposition but some developers are able to make us care about what is going on in the worlds which they create.
So if people talk about emotional moments in video games. Normally the first scene that comes to mind is this one:
<object width="480" height="385"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/RJU5MuMH6Tw&hl=de_DE&fs=1&"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/RJU5MuMH6Tw&hl=de_DE&fs=1&" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="480" height="385"></embed></object>
But I bet a lot of you have their own personal moments in video games that gave them the extra kick to go on. So what was your most emotional moment. Feel free to post some you tube videos.

I have always been a Final Fantasy fangirl. Aeris dying didn't really get to me, since I knew about that long before I played the game, but Final Fantasy 8 - which is possibly the most sappy of the FF games - made me a little :(
For the whole spectrum of emotions, I think I probably got the most angry at World of Warcraft :mneh when someone would lead us to wiping in an instance, or perhaps even more infuriating this one moment in Prince of Persia: Sands of Time where I think there was a glitch in my save game, because I could not get past these moving saw blades for the life of me :headache

I made a Dead Save in Deus Ex after being through 80% of the campaign on my first playthrough. I got attacked by a flamethrower from behind just as I pushed the quick save button. This game can call itself lucky that it is so damn good otherwise I wouldn't have started it all over again.
The good thing about this is that every time you play Deus Ex again you will notice something else you might have missed. Like the fact that you can save your brother in the hotel.

Without a doubt, the ending of Half Life 2: Episode 2 is probably one of the most memorable moments in gaming for me. If you intend to play the game, and don't know what happens, I advise against watching it as it's a big spoiler.

The only game that's elicited an emotional response from me is System Shock 2, and it's not sadness, but rather paranoia and primal fear.

Silent Hill 2. I love it, but it terrifies me at the same time. I generally hesitate to play it unless it's daytime, and I definitely refuse to play it while I'm alone. BUT. I can't play with Charley watching because he makes creepy breathing noises and tries to scare-grab me from behind :mad

I had to play BioShock and parts of Thief: Dealy Shadows with my housemate at the time watching. The fact that she was absolutely terrified by it made the experience less scary for me ^_^;

The original Aliens vs Predator was one of the few games that could really scare the shit out of me. Once the constant beep of the motion tracker changed its rythm I always paniced until I had finally found the source.
Side note never sneak up on your brother while he is playing AVP. I scared my big bro so hard that he made a one-eighty with his chair and punched me in the face. Sometimes games are way too tense for some people...and other people get a bloody nose...

I mostly play RTS, which really doesn't have much in the way of storyline content, for the most part. So the most emotional moment for me would probably be the death of Arthas in WotLK.

I wouldn't say I got emotional when I watched that - more a feeling of kick-ass joy because the a-hole has been defeated. But for emotion, you only have to look at Warcraft 3 and the death of Grom Hellscream:

Quite awesome when you consider the mighty Doomhammer did bugger all to the Pit Lord.

Feel kinda lame for it... but seriously the opening of Bioshock 2 got to me, big time. XD
And... that's about it. Haven't ever really been scared by a game...
Though I guess you could classify any of those "FUCK! FINALLY! :D AHAHAHA IN YOUR FACE, GAME!" moments as emotional. There really is nothing quite like the rush of finally getting through an area/level/challenge that was just looming on the realm of impossible.

I was just listening to the BioShock 2 soundtrack recently and you're right that was a sad opening :( Mr Bubbles...

The death of Sniper Wolf is one of those scenes where Hideo Kojima really delivers a movie like experience. The camera angles, the music and the cheesy dialog made this a true cinematic experience.

Another MGS moment that really caught me was this one since for a second I thought Snake would lose EVA in this scene and I wanted him to get his happy ending.

The ending to Streets of Rage 2 got me. What with the music (one of the best end credits ever!) the empty, cold music of the final level, the showdown with Shiva and Mr. X, and finally saving your friend/brother/ex-patner (depending on what character you were) - the whole thing was just awesome.

I think my most recent emotional tie to a game would have to be the new Red Dead Redemption by Rockstar. There is this small moment were you cross the boarder into Mexico and they drown out all the sound and lead in with this song (http://ca.kotaku.com/5556788/my-highlight-of-red-dead-redemption-isthis-song)( If you're playing the game read the article but don't click on the song. Like the article points out it won't do the moment justice.)
Its a haunting sort of experience. You basically slow down whatever it was you were doing and get pulled into the game. It's a small moment, with no significance, nothing particular happens, you just cross the boarder and this music queues. Probably the most unique experiences I have with a game in a long time.
Edit: Oh and I agree with Crusader Metal Gear Solid, was great. Those moments of emotion between characters were so heavy for the time on the original playstation.

^^Hehe I checked the dashboard at this moment to make sure that I did not accidently load a song from my mp3 selection upstairs.
This was indeed a very unique moment.

I get quite attached to my troops in Command and Conquer: Generals. I only ever play as the USA and - as with msot games - I save very very VERY often. So if I accidentally lose a unit, I'll re-load and ensure nothing happens to any of them in the upcoming attack. I have plenty of ambulances on hand and always choose to deploy the combat drones which repair units on the fly. I'm a very protective general.

That's actually the way I play Halo games and that is why I have a big problem with the COD franchise. In Halo I will always trade my heavy weapons with the average joe in order to increase his chance of survival. I willl even put myself into harms way in order to make sure that I will save as many marines and ODSTs as possible.
While in Halo you only get a set amount of reinforcements while in COD you will always get an army of Corporal Smiths and Seargent Johnsons that will happily walk into the line of enemy fire until I finally take out this sniper. I really don't have to give a damn about them.
I think Incubation and Operation Flashpoint solved this dilema very well. You can always let your men die but the replacements will never be as good as the original ones... This is why the replacement soldiers always end up sacrificing themselves for their country everytime I need a distraction for my real troops.
